Apart from the general improvements in d indicators of the budget since he came(reductn of Recurrent from 78% in 2010 to 68.7% dis time, reductn of Overhead from about about 500b in 2010 to about 200b dis time, reductn of deficit from about 2.9% in 2010 to 2.18% dis time, etc ) as a practical person am more impressd by d practical incentives in terms of taxes and excise duties the govt is putting in place to attract serious investors, increasd industralisatn and create jobs- the 0% duty for Sugar relatd equipment( including a 5yr tax holiday), 0% duty for aircraft parts(smthing the d aviatn guys hv bn pleading for for yrs), 0% duty for all equipments related to solid mineral exploration, and bus spare parts etc. Add all these to those already announced for cassava, rice, cocoa, oil palm etc( which are already hving sm impart) and of course d recent 30% infrastructure tax rebate for industries as well as 10% tax rebate for employing more than 10 workers- this is not only practical LEADERSHIP but also putting actions to one's plans. Very commendable..

I was also impressd by d fact dat sm real practical emphasis was placed on women, which is important if one is serious in reducing poverty.....this was not just a mere budget Speech but containd practical outlines to achieving sm of its aim; hopefully d implementatn wud improve just as d Speaker insistd it shld

Oya enuf of responding to others( too much silly peeps on this thread Or just too emotional maybe), let me now comment @topic:

The students are VERY WRONG taking this course even if it i understandable that they are naturally outraged. Much as one shares that outrage( and it has been almost universal in Nigeria), Violence is never the answer. There wouldn't be any difference between the what the Aluu did and what the students are doing now?

At this point, the Security agencies should take complete charge of that whole area, and if any one( student or villager) just as much as raise even a stone they should be very decisively dealt with...but wait oh, where the hell were the security agents and School Authorities when the students could even start these protests( or is it reprisals). smh

Hey, I've got a different mentality - and I look at things critically before I critique people...

Maybe, it's the Nigerian mentality - I guess that's why the country is so fvcked up!!
You mean Utopia,eh? Do you know how many persons have been slaughtered in the US this year alone by gun-trotting madmen?
Do I need to get started about the UK and her city-side gun violence?

These events have been extremely appalling to us as Nigerians, but stop behaving as though we are that hopeless or that we dont watch the news(international that is)

honeycandy: What this country needs is a revolution. But we need to channel our anger to the authority. I believe that the root cause of jungle justice is the loss of confidence in our security agents. Nigerians are of the notion that sending criminals to the police is a waste of time because at the end of the day, these criminals will be granted bail, with a good lawyer, walk away free men. Burning down the houses at Aluu isn't the solution. I'm so angry right now, I just want to get to the highest mountain and screeeeeeeeaaaaaammmmmmmm!! Until something is done to our security agencies, and confidence on our security and judicial system, jungle justice will continue to be the case.
Is it by the screeeeeeeeaaaaaammmmmmmming that you intend to do this 'revolution'?.

Take your time to mobilize blood thirsty men and ambush Aluu community like a thief in the night. Lock him and his family up and set the house ablaze, kill them all since they are barbarians.

How does this disprove Desola's Point?!!

Ankio Briggs didnt 'condemn' the speech. She only meant the measures were not enough to deal with the extent of the floods, especially the ones he had seen herself in the Niger Delta, hence her advice on the Govt to seek some International Aid( she questioned the need for the committee apparently not aware that the committee i only meant to raise additional money; she also questions the categorization of the affected States maybe cos she feels more help should come to the ND states which she perhaps considers more affected). In other words, she is criticizing some aspects of the intervention, asking for more(understandably) and suggesting what all the tiers of govts(FG, State, Local) should be doing ging forward. Some people apparently think you have to cant disagree with govt or give a different suggestion from govt's except you are 'condemning' GEJ. Pathetic.

Gbawe: Tunde Bakare should be careful alternating between Pastor and Politician when it suits him. He cannot, as someone who ran to be Vice President of Nigeria, be "predicting" who has won an election. This is a highly irresponsible action that may lead to chaos given how religious and emotional Nigerians are.

If another Party legitimately defeats Mimiko, some folks may riot to defend the "god-ordained" victory of Mimiko. Nigerian politics need maturity and fairness not religion, fanaticism or emotion. It is not only when ACN replies to Bakare's incendiary antics that people begin commenting negatively about the Party. There should simply be no tolerance for Bakare doing this. If any other Pastor had predicted Bakare would lose an election he will no doubt be the sort to say that is a "rigging plan" that will be resisted with "blood". It is fair to hold every individual/Party responsible for their conducts always. Bakare is totally out of order.

Politics › FG Unveils New Tax Incentives For Local And Foreign Investors , Employers by taharqa(op): 1:43am On Oct 06, 2012
The Federal Government Thursday disclosed a new regime of tax incentives targeted at supporting local investors in the Nigerian economy as well as to encourage more foreign investment flow into the country.

Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, dropped the hint in Lagos at the on-going second edition of the Nigerian International Investment Forum (NIIF) organised by the ministry in collaboration with the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC).
The incentives are coming just as the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, projected that by the end of this year, Nigerian banks would post a total profit to be equivalent to about 10 per cent of the aggregate profit of banks in the European Union.

Explaining the new incentives packaged in the form of tax credits, Aganga said going forward, companies that had invested in the development of infrastructural facilities such as access roads, power plants and water plants in the course of setting up their businesses are now entitled to tax credit of up to 30 per cent of the cost of generating the infrastructure.
Aganga described the initiative as a temporary relief measure introduced by the federal government to help cushion the debilitating effects of the challenges posed by the lack of infrastructural amenities in the country, which he described as a major setback to the inflow of investments into the country.

Another phase of the tax incentives, according to the minister, which is targeted at employment generation, provides tax reliefs for any employer that hires above 10 staff members.

The minister noted that for any 10 people employed by any company on a particular year, the employer gets tax credit for additional employments with more credits guaranteed if the employees are kept in the organisation further than two years.
“The federal ministry of works is currently working hard on the development of trade related infrastructure with a target time of completion of 2014. But before then we have introduced measures to cushion the effect of infrastructure deficiency one of which provides that any company that has invested in infrastructure will have tax credit of up to 30 per cent of the cost of generating the infrastructure,” he said.

Aganga also noted that the federal government had concluded plans towards fast-tracking the process of company registration in the country to less than 24 hours as has been achieved in Abuja.
He said the first step was to achieve the 24 hours target in Lagos, Kano and Enugu and then ensure that it becomes the norm even when you are registering the company from any other part of the world. He noted that the target for the achievement of the milestone is 2013.

“Investors like MTN took advantage of the opening up of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria while other global players were indecisive. Today those who failed to invest in the sector blame themselves when they see what MTN is making from its Nigerian operation.”

Meanwhile, explaining the comparative trend in profit in Nigeria and Europe, Aig-Imoukhuede, argued that about five years ago when the total profit posted by all European banks was about $60 billion, all the Nigerian banks recorded a combined profit of $386 million.
He, however, noted that in 2011, the figure changed significantly with the combined profit of all Nigerian banks climbing to $1.6 billion compared to an aggregate profit of $52 billion recorded by the European banks.
He said it was safe to project that by the end of 2012 the aggregate profit of all Nigerian banks would easily be up to 10 per cent of the total profit that would be declared by all the European banks.

Aig- Imoukhuede urged investors not to underestimate Nigeria’s economic potential and the profitability of business in the country.
“Nigeria cannot be ignored in the global business and economic scene for four major reasons, which include an extensive market; a rapidly growing economy; a stable political environment and a vibrant media and civil society sector,” he said.

Politics › Re: Nigeria’s Oil Production Ends In 41 Years – World Bank by taharqa: 1:00am On Oct 06, 2012
The World Bank said Thursday that it expected about $31 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows to Africa this year, adding that there had been strong investor-interest in the continent.
The bank, also predicted that Nigeria, which is currently the largest regional oil producer, could keep supplying at the 2011 levels for another 41 years, saying that Angola, the second largest producer in the region, had about 21 years remaining at current production levels before its known reserves would be depleted.

The multilateral institution also predicted a 4.8 per cent growth rate for sub-Saharan Africa in 2012, but cautioned countries to be frugal in spending their resources.
The bank, which had forecast a 4.9 per cent growth rate in 2011, said the region remained on track despite setbacks in the global economy.

According to the World Bank’s new Africa’s Pulse, a bi- annual analysis of the issues shaping Africa’s economic prospects, released yesterday, growth in sub-Saharan Africa, apart from South Africa, was forecast to rise to six per cent.
The report noted that African exports had rebounded in the first quarter of 2012, at an annualised pace of 32 per cent, up from 11 per cent 2011.

It, however, noted that African countries were not immune to the recent cases of market volatility occasioned by crisis from the Euro area as well as growth slowdown that is occurring particularly in China, which had remained an important market for Africa’s mineral exporters.

World Bank Vice-President for Africa, Mukhtar Diop, said: "A third of African countries will grow at or above six per cent with some of the fastest growing ones buoyed by new mineral exports such as iron ore in Sierra Leone, uranium and oil in Niger, and by factors such as the return to peace in Cote d’Ivoire, as well as strong growth in countries such as Ethiopia."

The report, further noted that poverty rates in the continent had declined faster than one percentage point a year and for the first time, between 2005 and 2008, the absolute number of people living on $1.25 a day fell while Child mortality had also declined.
It further cautioned that recent spikes in food and grain prices had become worrisome given that Africa’s Sahel region was already suffering from higher food prices, high rates of malnutrition and recurring crisis and insecurity.

It stated further that unprecedented hot and dry summer in the United States, Russia and Eastern Europe had led to reduced yields on both maize and wheat production worldwide.

The report added that new discoveries of oil, gas, and other minerals in the continent would generate a wave of significant mineral wealth in the region.

World Bank’s Chief Economist for Africa, and lead author of Africa’s Pulse, Shantayanan Devarajan, said: “Resource-rich African countries have to make the conscious choice to invest in better health, education, and jobs, and less poverty for their people because it will not happen automatically when countries strike it rich.”
