MORAL OF THE STORY:
As more and more, of the 10 NIPP Power plants and hundreds of the Transmission and Distribution Lines been built by the Govt across the length and breath of the nation are Completed and Energized (and most are now been completed), many areas in Nigeria would start experiencing even better Power than they do presently, just like the people in Akwa now do. NO DOUBTS. This is Esp so as the new Private Owners take over a large chuck of the Power Infrastructure by latest end of September, and bring the Private sector's penchant for EFFICIENCY and EFFECTIVENESS to the Electricity market. God's Speed to those people working towards this.
Now, I could care less bout the debate on who or what party is responsible for this (Obi Vs Ngige in this case). Dont give a rat's azzz, as long as the Power sector in Nigeria continues to improve |
Politics › Ngige, Obi Bicker Over Improved Power Supply by taharqa2(op): 1:44am On Aug 02, 2013 |
Senator Chris Ngige and Governor Peter Obi have differed over who should take the credit for the improved power supply to some parts of Awka, the Anambra State capital.
While Ngige, the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power and Steel, gave the credit to the Senate, which he said had been working hard to salvage power supply in Nigeria, Obi said the state government, working with the federal and local governments, made the feat possible.
For the past fortnight, some parts of Awka, especially High Tension, Ifite, Government House, GRA and places around the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have been enjoying steady power supply.
Before now, the affected areas were supplied electricity once every other days. But with the activation of the Agu-Awka power sub-station, normal electricity had been restored to these areas for the first time in many years.
Ngige said the work of the Senate Committee had already started yielding great dividends.
Speaking with reporters in Awka, the Senator, who represents Anambra Central, said the improvement was part of his constituency development programmes. But he said the new facility at Agu-Awka was still undergoing test-running.
He said, “This is part of the IPP programme of the government on the power sector. What we have in Agu-Awka power station is a new transmission line that is under a test-run and that explains why in the past three weeks, major parts of Awka capital territory have been enjoying uninterrupted power supply.”
But Special Assistant to the Anambra State Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Valentine Obienyen, said it was wrong for people to place the credit for the improved power supply in the wrong quarters.
He said, “People keep commending those that absolutely have nothing to do with the project that led to the improvement. The project is jointly sponsored by the federal, state and local government.
“The improvement was as a result of the completion of National Integrated Power Project at Agu Awka.
“The projects are going on very well. In places where there were problem of securing land, Governor Peter Obi intervened, example being at Fegge, Onitsha.” http://www.punchng.com/news/ngige-obi-bicker-over-improved-power-supply/ |
Politics › Zamfara Lead Poisoning: FG Fulfills Promise, Completes Remediation by taharqa2(op): 1:34am On Aug 02, 2013 |
The Federal Government has announced the completion of environmental remediation of lead poisoned sites in Zamfara State.
It said a total of N837m was spent for the environmental remediation, safer mining activities and sustainable health to alleviate the effect of lead poisoning in the state.
Media reports had indicated that over 460 children died as a result of lead poisoning from gold mining in the state since 2009, with many others suffering different forms of long-term and serious medical conditions.
But speaking on development in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of the Environment, Mrs. Hadiza Mailafia, said the government had successfully completed the clean up and environmental remediation of lead contaminated sites in Bagega village and other affected communities in the state.
She said, “This is to clarify the seeming complacency of the Federal Government towards the welfare of the children in Zamfara State affected by lead poisoning. The exercise spanned over a number of years, but today, we have kept our promise.
“We are glad that we have been able to successfully carryout environmental remediation of lead contaminated sites and this has brought succour to residents in the affected communities.”
On the N837m provided for the exercise, Mailafia said the fund was shared among three ministries.
“The amount spent in Zamfara was over N800m for three ministries. The ministries are the Health, which is to take care of the medical aspect; the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, which is in charge of safer mining techniques; and the Ministry of the Environment, for environmental remediation,” she said.
The minister, however, added that there was still the need for thorough public enlightenment on the dangers associated with lead poisoning.
She said, “In January this year when the President agreed to release the fund, I made a promise that we were going to be committed to see that the project succeeds. This is because lead poisoning is something most people are aware of, but unfortunately, there is a lacuna in terms of education.
“What we want people to know is that because of the negative effect of lead poisoning, there is a tendency that children will have cognitive impairment and are likely to exhibit behaviours that are not in tandem with societal norms and values.” http://www.punchng.com/business/homes-property/lead-poisoning-fg-completes-environmental-remediation-in-zamfara/ |

payless: What a delusional liar of a President.
You once promised electricity by end of 2012. You and your Minister also pledged to put problem of power behind us by end of 2013. Your Minsiter said in June that the date has now been rescheduled to 2014. When you give out contracts, I thought there should be dates when the terms of the contracts must be met. In you own case Mr. President, the date of contract delivery is unending. I know you don't give a damn! You did not promise us your so called "steady progress". People can't see your so called steady progress being made in the power sector. All we hear are numbers of contracts being given to newly registered companies owned by some Nigerian elements. In the last 18 months, there have been over 100 power contracts approved by you to these companies with nothing to show for it. These contracts are running into tens of billion dollars. The only thing to show for this so called progress is unending blackout. Going by your Minister for Power, power problem is as a result of witches and wizards. How clueless can you get, Jonathan? As recent as 10 days ago, your Minister said Nigerians can now boast of 16 hour per day of electricity. Do you truly believe that? Go to main cities in Nigeria and rejoice with them that they now enjoy 16 hour electricity. Let us see if you come out alive while doing it.
How dare you praise INEC when all you and your power drunk killer party called PDP did was to throw spanners into the registration of APC? You and your fellow party men went ahead to create problem by springing up the same acronym of APC. Do you think Nigerians are so stup.id and can't see through your dirty politics? The registration of APC should not have taken this long if not for your political gimmick. Mr. President, your plan was to have original APC to engage in an unending court battle with other APCs, but God was bigger than you after all. Registration process of APC should not have taken more than two months, but with God on their side APC was finally registered.
On MTN appointing a Nigerian as CEO, Nigerian government had no hand in the appointment. The only reason is nothing other than the guy is cheaper and qualified as any other executives who vied for the job. Appointing a Nigerian as CEO makes a lot of sense because MTN will be paying him the fraction of what a white man or Indian man would have accepted as salaries and benefits. Once again Mr. President, you had nothing to do with the appointment of MTN CEO. MTN makes its own decision as a South African company.
Mr. President, you claimed in your last paragraph of your plan to build strong democratic institution but your record shows otherwise. Have you forgotten what happened during NGF, where 16 votes were greater than 19? What about your arithmetic of 5 being bigger than 27 in Rivers State House of Assembly? What stopped you from taking a position during the NGF saga? What stopped your from calling your dogs out that 5 legislators cannot and should not impeach the Speaker who has the backing of 27 others? Why haven’t you call your wife to order? Your wife destabilized a whole state while you sit still.
Mr. President, you can run but you can't hide. Nigerians know you for your deceit and deceptive way of governance. Nigerians can see through your lies. 2015 is around the corner, you should prepare for rude awakening. NOISEMAKING. Opposition in Nigeria- raising NOISEMAKING to a fine art. Continue to make Noise. Lots of it in fact. That's aftall what you guys do. The ONLY thing you CAN do. It is easier and soothening, I undastand. But wait o, you chaps tried this b4, right? Cameron doesn't really care about limiting immigration (it's a senseless move, really) - he cares about winning the next elections.
I would suggest that Nigeria liaise with India, Kenya, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on the possiblility of adopting a coordinated, multilateral approach to this issue. I think that would better achieve the desired effect than taking a unilateral retaliatory measure. Meanwhile, what are we still doing in the Commonwealth? Great point.....
