Forget the headline coz that's what the media does (blow informations out of proportion just to stay at the top or gain traffic) and stop reading village interpretation to everything please.

Please tell them that this is not a sentimental matter, but a money matter. They probably don't understand anything beyond the topic.

Very true about your observation. I naturally don't pick these things/errors except they affect me directly.

In the days of 2go as an undergraduate, I could abbreviate for Africa! I'll abbreviate some words and the person I'm chatting with will have to ask for the meaning in full, it was chronic. Before I knew where I was, in exams, while writing fast, I write the word 'the' as 'd'. Most times, I don't get the chance to correct it. After a long battle, I gradually began to correct it.

Right now, I'm so prejudiced against this fad that I'll not buy an exercise book that has written anywhere on it, 'skool' because I feel it's the same amount of time it will take to spell correctly this misspelled word. I can't afford to mess with my poor parents investments.

Only an anti-education book manufacturer would dare misspell words on their book. Horrible!

You're right about the abbreviations in exams. Especially that "d" one. It's not fair on the person who has to read it. So much effort on reducing a word like 'the' to "de", etc.

Sometimes one tries not to be a grammar Nazi, but really.

There is no reason nowadays not to spell words in full on electronic devices. I believe there should be some sort of rehab facilities made available because you need to see old people doing it.

This makes no sense to me. How do you know he was stressed? Why not avoid the teleconference entirely if he wasn't up for it, instead of showing up and being rude?
There is no excuse for how he replied to those questions. He was disrespectful and arrogant!

His problem isn't rudeness, but that he refused to give answers to pertinent questions raised.

He appears unsure and so is blustering in order to cover up.

On another note some of the people here proclaiming this use abbreviations left, right and centre. Eg. The last guy on the front page, I think, is using the word/letter "u" to condemn another guy who supports abbreviating. This "u" occurs in the middle of a sentence with regular English spellings.

The problem is too deep. Some don't even realize they do it.

I am a firm believer in calling people by whatever names they prefer, or addressing them in whatever way they would like to be addressed. The issue of identity is central to the soul of every human being. If that bothers you too much...too bad!

That was your message to anybody who read that. It sounds like your defense for people not being called by their names is that it has not stopped them from being "jerks", and that those who do not go by their names are great guys, approachable and kind like your dear friend "chief". Or what was the point of that submission? You basically said they are jerks for that

People will agree that's what you posted previously.

Point is, people should be called by their names. Apart from close family, there is no reason not to refer to a person by their name. Most reasons for not doing so don't make much sense.

You address people the way they want to be addressed. So what's the issue? If someone prefers to be addressed by his first name, it does NOT make him better or smarter, than someone else who does not like such a familiar form of address.

That is a generalization. I've not mentioned such myself, whether it makes people smarter or not.

Guy, every culture has its' own dynamics. There are rules of engagement for every form of interaction. And this applies in every society. I don't have a problem referring to anybody by any kind of title he likes. My only issue, is the kind of interaction we have and how much positive impact he or she is willing to release upon my life. One of my greatest mentors in college, was a man we all fondly called Chief, even though he never held any traditional title. We gave him the title, out of deference to his age. The chap was a walking mine of information, a study in humility and a tower of support to many of us. Always willing to go the extra mile, for others.

It was a sad day, when we lost him. I have had some lecturers and bosses, who were addressed by their first names and turned out to be bullies and jerks!

Your last paragraph doesn't mean you cannot call people by their names. They weren't "jerks" because of that. Releasing "impact" on people has nothing to do with names.

There is nothing wrong in calling people by their names. What else will you call them by? There are names and nicknames.
