Rosskivvy: Good points. But Benin officialdom and bureaucracy had writing. This was an empire that exchanged ambassadors with Portugal as early as the 1500s.
The bureaucracy was divided into several departments, each handling this or that trading nation/region and other such segments of commerce and diplomacy. There would have been literate scribes and bureaucrats involved in such operations and keeping records of transactions and trade agreements in scrolls.
Oba Esigie for instance, ruled in the early 1500s, and spoke and wrote Portuguese. I read there was a Bini-Portuguese 'pidgin' language that developed during that time, and which was used and spoken fluently by many officials in the bureaucracy.
So there was some writing among the ruling classes, which, like in other parts of the world at the time, was not extended to the mass population.
The Hausa states also had writing, with their ancient Ajami script.
The Igbos and Efiks had Nsibidi writing.
It was the slave trade and colonialism that led to the destruction of the numerous records that would have been kept in various forms and formats.
I agree very much with your point. I guess its impossible for any relatively advanced civilization not to have a type of sign or writing at any level of development for keeping and transmitting information. But then again, the nature of the writting materials available must have made them not to last long. Obviously there were difficulties in passing on knowledge and the thick forest cut of many civilizations from others. So in Africa knowledge also didn't spread well. Civilization many times rose and fell in isolation
Rosskivvy: Family houses were divided into three sections: the central part was the husband’s quarters, looking towards the road; to the left the wives’ quarters (oderie), and to the right the young men’s quarters (yekogbe).
Daily street life in Benin City might have consisted of large crowds going though even larger streets, with people colourfully dressed – some in white, others in yellow, blue or green – and the city captains acting as judges to resolve lawsuits, moderating debates in the numerous galleries, and arbitrating petty conflicts in the markets.
The early foreign explorers’ descriptions of Benin City portrayed it as a place free of crime and hunger, with large streets and houses kept clean; a city filled with courteous, honest people, and run by a centralised and highly sophisticated bureaucracy.
The city was split into 11 divisions, each a smaller replication of the king’s court, comprising a sprawling series of compounds containing accommodation, workshops and public buildings – interconnected by innumerable doors and passageways, all richly decorated with the art that made Benin famous. The city was literally covered in it.
The exterior walls of the courts and compounds were decorated with horizontal ridge designs (agben) and clay carvings portraying animals, warriors and other symbols of power – the carvings would create contrasting patterns in the strong sunlight. Natural objects (pebbles or pieces of mica) were also pressed into the wet clay, while in the palaces, pillars were covered with bronze plaques illustrating the victories and deeds of former kings and nobles.
At the height of its greatness in the 12th century – well before the start of the European Renaissance – the kings and nobles of Benin City patronised craftsmen and lavished them with gifts and wealth, in return for their depiction of the kings’ and dignitaries’ great exploits in intricate bronze sculptures.
“These works from Benin are equal to the very finest examples of European casting technique,” wrote Professor Felix von Luschan, formerly of the Berlin Ethnological Museum. “Benvenuto Celini could not have cast them better, nor could anyone else before or after him. Technically, these bronzes represent the very highest possible achievement.”
What impressed the first visiting Europeans most was the wealth, artistic beauty and magnificence of the city. Immediately European nations saw the opportunity to develop trade with the wealthy kingdom, importing ivory, palm oil and pepper – and exporting guns. At the beginning of the 16th century, word quickly spread around Europe about the beautiful African city, and new visitors flocked in from all parts of Europe, with ever glowing testimonies, recorded in numerous voyage notes and illustrations.
Lost world
Now, however, the great Benin City is lost to history. Its decline began in the 15th century, sparked by internal conflicts linked to the increasing European intrusion and slavery trade at the borders of the Benin empire.
Then in 1897, the city was destroyed by British soldiers – looted, blown up and burnt to the ground.
Nowadays, while a modern Benin City has risen on the same plain, the ruins of its former, grander namesake are not mentioned in any tourist guidebook to the area. They have not been preserved, nor has a miniature city or touristic replica been made to keep alive the memory of this great ancient city.
A house composed of a courtyard in Obasagbon, known as Chief Enogie Aikoriogie’s house – probably built in the second half of the 19th century – is considered the only vestige that survives from Benin City. The house possesses features that match the horizontally fluted walls, pillars, central impluvium and carved decorations observed in the architecture of ancient Benin.
Curious tourists visiting Edo state in Nigeria are often shown places that might once have been part of the ancient city – but its walls and moats are nowhere to be seen. Perhaps a section of the great city wall, one of the world’s largest man-made monuments, now lies bruised and battered, neglected and forgotten in the Nigerian bush.
A discontented Nigerian puts it this way: “Imagine if this monument was in England, USA, Germany, Canada or India? It would be the most visited place on earth, and a tourist mecca for millions of the world’s people. A money-spinner worth countless billions in annual tourist revenue.”
Instead, if you wish to get a glimpse into the glorious past of the ancient Benin kingdom – and a better understanding of this groundbreaking city – you are better off visiting the Benin Bronze Sculptures section of the British Museum in central London.
Civilization rise and fall. In Africa as in many other places great civilization arose. But I suspect three factors that made this civilizations disappeared almost without trace-or four; Our building materials that comprises of mud that degenerates quickly. -our climate and temperature makes things weather and desinintegrate quickly. -the prevalent Forrest and Savannah that quickly encroached on buildings and overwhelm them.these forest even discourage building any lasting edifice to start with. -and wars and invasions-internally and from external elements like the Arabs and eauropians. And importantly too, the knowledge of whatever past civilization perished because we didn't develop writing. I guess the lack of big mountains discouraged us from thinking about the future, like and permanency. In the present time too, the scant interest given to the study of archaeology has put the nail on the confine. This situation has fostered a sense of inferiority. A feeling that we are just incapable of doing great things. Flip the absence of many of the mentioned conditions around and see what Egypt, Sudan and even Mali with moderate climate have from their pasts
According to the ex runs girl, she fell in love with one of her clients who wanted to date her. Some time into their relationship, he told her he did not like the kind of work she does and promised to open up a business for her.
After 10 months of dating, he now claims he is tired of the relationships and wants to call it quits without fulfilling his promise of setting up a business for her.
She now claims that she knows what she will do to get back at him for what he has done to her.
But those are real and serious threat. The guy should be advised to find a way to manage this issue well. He should maybe open the shop. One interpretation I am getting from the girls talk is; murder then suicide. The guys present or future girl and even family may be at risk. Na olosho they get mind to follow through some bad plans pass. Remember, hell hath no fury than a woman scorned
The believe by many that associate one of Americas presidential candidate to God and believes God supports him, isn't biblical and it will only lead to delusion. If Jesus were to stand for president in the America of today, he most likely will not win, because Jesus won't prefer some race to the others, fight wars, misuse the resources in the Earth, hoard weapons that can destroy the Earth a thousand times over, ignore the health of the climate, support abortion and gay or allow people carry guns. God still allows these earthly government obviously, but he does not depend on them or even view them in a positive light. They will soon make way for the kingdom of his dear son. So please don't shame the God of the Bible by associating him with these people.

See, your blame should be on the inciting statements and orders to kill that KANU gave his boys at the height of the protest. The governor too should know that no two wrongs make a right
Amos1423: My question is, why is the coffin still fresh after 1 year being that termites don't take time in consuming wood not to talk of leaving it fresh for a year.
digressing if this incident is otherwise true, in saner climes scientist would be conducting examination on the body for a potential discovery since this has never occurred before but it seems what all our professors and expert know is extorting money from students wearing insane glasses.
I know this ones would say na God handwork.
The camera moved close and we didn't notice any obvious breathing. I the people there were more spellbound about the preserved state of the corpse, then some few out of that utter shock started noticing things that seemed like the clothe was moving. If its the original shock about the preserved state of the coffin and corpse? Its explainable; the soil composition must have kept it in that good state. It do happens. The soil composition and maybe general humidity isn't conducive to decay causing microbes
fmcjunior: Well, most times, I'm always on the same page with Reno but this one is an exemption. This tweet exumes childishness. Forget people saying that they can beat a soldier one on one. Though it's possible but to be honest, a soldier has an upper hand against you in man to man combat.
Do you also include Nigeria soldiers. Don't let me deceive, Nigeria in many things just have body but lack good engine. Nigeria don't do anything well, so one can rightly assume that this soldiers too aren't trained well. I many times pray that no issue should join us together with even countries like Kenya or Ethiopia, so we won't be rudely surprised
Ishilove: Some days back, the Nigerian social media users were dragging Desmond Elliot like Tiger generator because he tagged the youths as children. I was a bit indifferent about the whole brouhaha because wetin I dey think big pass all that noise and after watching the now infamous video, my indifference did not change.
Desmond later came out to apologise in tears for calling us yoots 'shidren', and while I was wondering aloud on this forum what the whole fuss about, my friend told me offline told me this-
"The problem is that the Nigerian social media space is now a lynch mob. Nobody is ready to listen to common sense, people are incapable of comprehending simple ideas and people are very intolerant of any view that does not agree with theirs
People are reacting to Desmond Elliot's video based on what they think he said, not based on what he actually said"
This friend shared the full YouTube clip with me and after watching it again, I realised how very toxic social media has become.
I stumbled on an article by Ivan-Whyte Eagle Lawson who has articulated my thoughts on this whole distracting nonsense featuring Desmond as the lead character.
Long post alert!! Stop here if your attention span is one tweet long.
My dear I feel tired I would have taken more time to give my take on this issue. To summarize everything, Desmond like many of our representative is not very smart at measuring the mood of the public. He started well by condemning the lekki shooting, but everything else u analysed from I think number two to six shows his insensitivity. Example, he could have been wiser if he didn't castigate the youth on attacking the palace and whatever culture. This monarchs have been seen to be really for themselves and they have been taking us for a ride. And its really bad for him to have used children to describe the youth or their alleged acts. Yes, we say more terrible things to ourselves online, but that coming from a leader we elected there was too much. Wisdom is prime. There are time to say something's and there are time to just be silent. There is what they call the right words at the wrong time; this like + x - will always be = -
To people that are really knowledgeable, have discernment and see beyond the surface this may proof Ayade is good and serious. This monarchs are mostly selfish people always seeking aggrandizement and interference. They should be put in there place. I suspect he is taking the opportunity of what affected many states especially in the south of the country to settle score with Ayade. The people shouldn't support any monarchs or small elitist gangs, rather the people should support the people and in essence anybody that support the people
pozehnani: Oga, at what age do you want to be teaching them that? Were you taught that kind of lesson at that age? Did it shape your Outlook in life? Did you not eventually get to know and understand that a woman's place goes beyond the kitchen?
There are age-appropriate lessons that should be taught at every stage. That stage has not come because the child is not advanced enough to even understand the idea and moral of such lessons yet. so it'd be a waste of time and energy at this level. For now, you can only teach them what they can relate with and that is what the teacher has done but too bad she couldn't defend herself.
The fact is our style of education needs serious review. Our society now is the result of what they taught us at schools and homes. It took extra readings for me to form the liberal person I am today. Many people never escapes the superstitions and awkward morals taught at homes and schools all their livea
Sanchez01: 1. Soldiers truly shot at protesters and people were killed. 2. Soldiers carted away bodies that night (There are video evidences of soldiers freely walking into the midst of protesters to take away bodies). 3. We all watched how someone died during the live session of DJ Switch after being hit by a bullet. 4. Bullet shell casings were also found the next day. 5. Several were wounded and rushed to the hospital. 6. Sanwo-Olu initially said no one died but later came around to say only two persons were confirmed dead. (What killed them?). 7. The military denied ever been at the Lekki toll gate that night. As a matter of fact, they planted badges and ranks on the scene after they left. 8. If families aren't coming out, it is because they are either scared or not living close to the dead victims to even suspect they went to protest. 9. Several missing person cases took over Twitter 3 days after the Lekki onslaught and families were directed to several hospitals which took in these victims.
There is no denying that the Nigerian Army, through the soldiers, took away bodies that night, possible to reduce the outrage of the military killing unarmed protesters in modern age.
What's worse is that the event of that was premeditated and carefully executed. First, they took out cameras, then cut off power around the area to prevent people from recording their atrocities. We all saw videos of on and off the scene of that night.
Anyone with a straight head knows there is a massive cover-up attempt by the government. People were shot at; people were killed and soldiers took bodies away that night.
Please can you provide the video to your no. 2 claim? I haven't seen one. What happened is evil, but we should not over exaggerate truth for effect, the result won't be what we hoped for.
pozehnani: ITK. Like the boy will not get to know by the time he gets to the tertiary levels. Is it everything he'll learn at this stage?
What u put in them from young forms their outlook in life unconsciously. This is the mentality that make ladies always have a sense of entitlement. You will see a girl earning more than a guy, still wanting the guy to carry everything for head.
thinkmoney: In many cases in Africa our traditions and orientation is our drawbacks. Shame on any Igbo that still believes in the Osu and Ohu societal class divisions. Such person is the real and worst slave - a mental slave. God created everybody free. Dark societies create slaves. And important too; Leave your brothers properties for his children. If he doesn't even have children, leave it for his wife, even if the marriage was a day old. Work for your own property.
A friends wedding is tomorrow, we are short of ten thousand to rent just any clean car. Please help in whichever way.

I don't trust any plan that is more than a year in Nigeria. Nigeria isn't that focused and purposeful. Who even knows what the value of naira will be in 5years time?
madnesscom: The undisputed fact is that OHAMADIKE MAZI NNAMDI KANU, the slayer of this evil contraption called nigger-area is/has never been wrong. He is whiter than white and purer than the purest.
Gradually everything OHAMADIKE MAZI NNAMDI KANU has said is coming to pass. He said it that he will destroy nigeria with the truth. That’s what is happening now.
FYI I’m yoruba from odogbolu LGA ogun state.
You and those that liked your post are human worshipers. Deceived set of people. 'Pure of the purest' giving orders to kill people and cut their heads
SUFFERInSMILIIN: ]Nigeria is a nation of illiterate and stupidity. What did she do for Nigeria in terms of development nothing what did she do for Africa in terms of development nothing. How can you have somebody for one of the most backward countries in the world trying to lead the wto please let her come and build our country before taking her illiteracy to other countries. You cannot destroy your country and you want to go and destroy another person's country. Nigerians are suffering from mass illiteracy[/color][/b]
Have u given her the position or platform to do whatever for the country? When she was in charge of our finance, she managed the place as she could. Other than that, she asnt been in a position to directly affect the masses. I am sure she has done her bit for her family though
pasol4real: I spit n curse the day you became an Igbo man That is if you are indeed Igbo
I am first a human then I an Igbo. I know the name of my ancestors back to 7generations. I am an embodiment of everything an Igbo man is . I am industrious, smart and hansome. I respect others. I don't encourage death, hate and racism like you and your leader KANU. That your spit due to your illiteracy and drunkenness was spewed straight up above you and its falling back down on your face. You curse? But who are you? Do you matter?
SeriouslySense: They have been doing this for so long, I remember I watch a documentary on the Nigeria soldiers in Liberia, there was a deaf and dumb child, Nigerian soldiers mistook this child for a child soldier, the child could not explain for himself, since he was deaf and dumb, and if you watch the brutality they applied on that innocent deaf and dumb Liberian Child you will be shocked, about how they conducted themselves in Liberia, just because they have a gun, they have lost good Judgement.
To summarize the Story, they killed the Child, it was too brutal
My God!!! They are keg of gun powder waiting to set the nation on fire. We will get fed up of them too soon. We know they are also brutal but we aren't talking much now because understandably we still fear them like 'die_
vanbonattel: From your logic, I can see you love and adiore Shekau more than Nnamdi kanu?
I have made myself clear to you. Any knowledgeable person will see my post from the beginning and see that I abhor racism and violence. Kanu as been behaving like a deranged person. His style is so dark and evil. If you are in your right mind and listened to the latest audio from him you will most probably come to my conclusion. Somebody shouting that ipob should not only kill police, even female police anywhere they are even if they hadn't proved to be a threat but that they should behead them so they won't be able to enter paradise. See such hate and anger!!! He comes across as a coward that can only give orders from his bedroom seeing how quickly and shamelessly he came out to deny the tape like a day after.
Let's just pray war doesn't happen. I was just imagining what this our unprofessional soldiers would have done to this civilians in war time after this round of beating? It's to spray the 'coackroaches' with bullets right there in that mud. Looks like scenes we have seen many times over at troubled spots in Africa.
vanbonattel: Can you guess how many people Shekau has slaughtered in the last 5 years, 20 000 or 30 ooo ?
To be frank with you, it's because Shekau is more brave and tactically sound than Nnamdi. If Nnamdi had is way, everybody that doesn't subscribe to his ideology would be beheaded-EVERYBODY. Shekau isn't hiding in Syria and giving orders. He is right there in the thick and thin with is followers
gidgiddy: Oh I see. Shekau is better than Kanu because Shekau is actually killing people while Kanu is only running his mouth?
Nigerians and their incredible mentality will not kill with laughter
Running mouth and giving (even describing the type of death) instructions to kill that has actually led to killings. Did you listened to his boys giving report to him on their activities? Evil doesn't depart evil doers.
