All over the world we see different ethnicities sharing few things in common but still maintain their identities. There are even instances where ethnicities are formed purely based on religious affiliations. Even in Nigeria, we have Isoko and Urhobos as different ethnic groups even though they have a lot in common. They respect each other. Up North, you dont see the Hausa forcing 'hausaness' or whatever you call it on smaller ethnic groups like Chamba, Gwandara, Numan, Jokuns etc though they even share more things in common than the Ikwerre and Igbo.
The earlier you guys begin to respect others and realise that you can not force identity on any people, the better.

Southern governors are now in Unison for a president from Southern Nigeria, and they also in unison of restructuring and devolution of power from the centre. Right to State Police, etc.
