Hey pretty16 you made it congrats . Sorry to hear about your flight delay especially with kids but hey your long wait is finally over. Hope you're settling down well? pretty16: Hello my people. How are you all doing? We are in the States now. Spent 1 month in Naija before leaving. Plenty shopping and preparation things. Left naija 15th Got in on the 16th. Took B.A, from London Heathrow to Chicago. The layovers was extremely short. About 2hrs each. By the time we got out of the plane Tru checks, and catching buses and train, we are boarding again. It was a blessing not to wait at all, up until when I got to Chicago. We got into Chicago at 10a.m, passed through CBP, got to the officer said hello. I was so tired travelling with 3boys. Lord have mercy!. Just passed him our immigrant packet. The blue form I was given to declare food, he helped me fill out. I was expecting him to ask me questions, but not a single question. He just took the form and passports and just asked me to follow him for processing. I did. We sat in another area. Waited for another 15mins then another officer came out with our passports and said all done you are good to go. I said thank u sir, And he says you are quite welcome. Went to pick my baggage. 7 huge boxes. My 6yr old was so helpful I was shocked. After loading the 2 carts my son was pushing 1, I was pushing the 2nd. Passed through gate 4 where they checked my dry food through scanners. Thought they were going to open the boxes, but nothing like that. I stated rushing to catch a train to my next terminal. By this time it was 11.30. I didn't know we would go through another check in when we got to terminal 3. By the time I got to my flight it was 11.58. gate had closed. I was just looking at the plane. That was where the nightmare started. Went for them to rebook me on another flight to Columbus. All flights were fully booked until 7.45pm. . How was I suppose to spend another 7hrs with my kids at the airport. Lord! my 3yr old, you don't even want to know. "I tell am say him get luck we no dey naija. Cos for that Airport, I for give am him size." I had to start walking over to gate L to wait, no be small walk ooo. Jesus! Their airports are big abeg. By the time I got there, I realized my baby's boarding pass wasn't with me. We started working back to the lady. I think going back was a blessing for me, cos the lady checked again and found out the boarding pass wasn't even confirmed. She and her colleagues started working on getting me something earlier. They put me on standby for 4.20pm. my 3yr old started his drama. Good Lord. God just sent a white mother and grandmother. "Beautiful soul" she stepped in to help me. Carried my baby while I carried my 3yr old who was screaming his head off, that I should carry him. She bought snacks and water for the kids. Came to meet me and said her flight was delayed but she had to go now. I guess this was what God wanted her to do. Gave me a hug and left. By the time I got out to even get her name, she was gone. There are definitely some Good fearing genuinely nice white ppl in this country. I met 3. One gave me his phone to call my mom that I had missed my flight. I no see free WiFi ooo. One was willing to give up her seat for me to travel with the boys on the 4.20pm flight. We all eventually got in. As we were coming out when we got to Columbus, see my people already waiting. That was the big relieve part.
Went to social security office yesterday. My kids own they said will be ready in 2weeks. Mine they said 4weekz cos the immigration officers misspelt my name. They wrote my middle name 2wice before my surname. So they have to rectify it. |

Definitely he has achieved a lot and is a role model for us especially those who want to go into banking and beyond. He rose to head Credit Suisse's global investment bank which is a solid achievement. Jakumo: This correction is understood. Still and all, it is safe to say that Mr. Ogunlesi rose to his pole position in that outfit by virtue of his outstanding qualifications, and his cumulative experience, but NOT due to any "family connections" of the sort that are the norm in Nigeria, for example. In short, Ogunlesi remains the best man for his current job, despite the presence of highly competitive colleagues who would unseat Ogunlesi in a heartbeat, if they could. |

No he does not. He runs a private equity fund which invests people's money. If I run one of ARM's funds as a fund manager and invest the funds in an airport do I own the airport, no. I am the manager investing the funds on behalf of my investors big difference. I don't get what tax purposes you are talking about. The fund was started by Credit Suisse and General Electric as a joint venture and he was seconded as CEO of the fund from Credit Suisse where he was a banker. Jakumo: Indirectly, the man owns those airports, despite the semantics of how that ownership is expressed for tax purposes. |

Bayo Ogunlesi is definitely a successful man who we should be proud of, but please let's give accurate information.
He does not own 5 airports, he runs an infrastructure fund that invested in the airports on behalf of investors. The fund is a private equity venture started by Credit Suisse and GE and he was seconded from Credit Suisse where he was a senior investment banker. |

If Trump is racist for causing illegal immigrants to move to Canada, then I guess that makes Trudeau racist as well for now saying people should stop coming across the border illegally, specifically calling out Nigerians. I think the bigger discussion is what is being done in these south American countries and the likes of Nigeria to stop people fleeing all trying to move illegally to US, Canada, Germany etc. Abbeybailey: Trump is fowl yanshed indeed. The issue isn't the fee, it's the manner in which it is being implemented with people caught unawares after arriving. Such a policy should be properly communicated (if only we can maintain up to date government websites) so people know ahead and can decide if they still want to travel to Nigeria or not. Some people will even think it's just immigration officials truing to shake them up and not believe it's a true government policy. LaudableXX: The charges are for foreigners trying to enter Nigeria, with foreign passports and does not apply to Nigerians with Nigerian passports. So what is the problem? A number of other countries charge similar fees for similar purposes, and many Nigerians gladly pay such fees at the entry point of those countries, without any murmuring or complaints. So why is everyone now complaining about NIS doing the same thing, a number of other nations have been doing for the past few years?
I have paid $45 USD for visa on arrival at the entry point of another African country before, and I witnessed many other travellers doing so freely, without any issue. But why is it that when it comes to our own shores, everyone complains without thinking? It is NOT by force to come to Naija, o! |

Totally agree and this is due to bipartisan politics which has prevented an updated immigration policy despite many presidents campaigning to fix the broken immigration system. While I agree Trump may act crast at time and say inappropriate things I agree with him on the need to secure the borders and tighten the immigration laws. The issue American has has is not entlecinf laws which while may seem nice leads to more issues down the line. It's pretty much been a policy of do as little as possible to avoid offending potential voters and pass the problem to the next administration. There is no solution that will be without controversy and pain but it has to be done if not in 10-20 years time it will be way worse. grandstar: You're correct.
Only problem is America has no well developed policy for immigration.
It would be nice for instance if they had a plan to bring in 10,000 Nicaraguan workers yearly to America or 5,000 Moldovans. These could be targeted at skilled or semi skilled or even unskilled workers.
Let there be something progressive on ground |

Yes immigrants contribute but there will always be an optimum number and no country can survive with unlimited open borders. Look at Canada despite the fact they need lots of immigrants they have control over the process, who they let in and more importantly the numbers. I don't buy the argument that because immigrants bring benefits means a country should have open borders with uncontrolled and unlimited immigration. grandstar: Immigrants give more than they take out They are net contributors to the American economy and not parasites. This is based on facts but only mere assumptions.
Illegal immigrants especially are huge contributors as they have no access to government resources such as free health care for themselves as they are illegal |

You are correct even if there is a major issue it will probably have to go to an immigration or criminal court which means you will have to enter the country. Fortissimo502: Correct...but read it to its conclusion. Satisfied regarding what? Your PR status.
In actual fact the main reason for inadmissibility (or is it revocation of PR status) is serious criminality e.g. murder. You can check case law on canlii.
From what I've read and been told, in most cases the PR will still be allowed entry while the the government begins proceedings to formally revoke the PR status.
Again I have seen no case law where a PR with valid status was denied entry. I believe there was a case where a naturalized citizen was denied entry (or something like that) due to some issue in verifying their status. Though I'm not sure of the details regarding that case.
This tells me that the key thing with entry is status. Although yes it is true that you can be denied entry based on serious criminality. To me that doesn't justify saying PRs don't have right of entry.

That's some interesting reading for anyone interested in the topic. Make sure to read in full. |

Based on the bolded it is safe to conclude that if the officer is NOT satisfied he can refuse entry therefore you don't have a right to entry. Of course for an officer to refuse entry for a PR it must be something very serious and significant. Right of entry of permanent residents (2) An officer shall allow a permanent resident to enter Canada if satisfied following an examination on their entry that they have that status. Fortissimo502: Not really trying to stir up old stuff but what do you say about 19 (2) of division 3 of the immigration and refugee protection act. For ease of reference it reads thus:
Right of entry of permanent residents
(2) An officer shall allow a permanent resident to enter Canada if satisfied following an examination on their entry that they have that status.
---------------------
It is my interpretation that if you have PR status, you have right of entry.
In addition,
IRCC here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/new-immigrants/pr-card/understand-pr-status.html
explicitly states that PRs have the right to live in Canada. I don't think it makes sense for someone to have the right to live somewhere but not enter that place.
Again I believe once your status is valid you have right to enter. Only way you can be denied is if there's some issue with your PR status. I do not believe it's a privilege.
Can someone find any case law on canlii that shows someone with valid PR status being denied? |

Let's even put Trump aside, the numbers are just not sustainable and another solution needs to be found closer to home. I don't claim to have all the answers but I strongly believe maybe working with the South American countries in one form or the other is key maybe to improve the economic situation and security even though that creates it's own set of challenges. I agree there are many issues in many of these countries but the solution is not for everyone to move to the US or Canada or Germany. It's also interesting that in these conversations the governments of Mexico, El Salvador etc are not called to account in any way and the focus is all on US Canada etc. skarlett: These ones won't learn, Trump and majority of the Americans don't want you, argue with US 2015 election results |

The funny thing is Trump has done all he said he will do so I'm not sure why the surprise. Re Trudeau while I don't necessarily agree with Trump's approach I can't stand Trudeau and his statement was contrary to what was discussed that they had resolved the tarrif issue when they hadn't. I disagree it's all China. Trump made it clear when he came in China is the key to North Korea and put pressure on China. It's a myriad of many reasons and one of which is also North Korea economic situation. As a dictator it's easier to keep people in check when they are fed. Hunger will at some point result in people pushing back since there is nothing to lose. That's why I said it's a good opportunity to give security guarantees and also economic benefits in exchange for peace. I am with you in hoping things work out because as I said therr is more at stake than Trump is great or stupid yet the press in the US are so divided and reporting it from the angle of either proving Trump is the greatest thing since slice bread or the worse ignoring the fact that there are millions and millions of people who will be impacted if it succeeds or fails. Mindfulness: Agreed but how can anyone trust the US (Gadaffi/Hussein) or even Trump, who feels hurt (Trudeau) easily and acts on his feelings (cancels an agreement punishing bystanders), says one thing today and another tomorrow? Abeg! China/Xi is pulling the strings here and Trump is enjoying the attention as the narcissist that he is. I am not overly optimistic. I predict that North Korea will make promises, give a little, take more in return and in 10 years, after some economic recovery, have more leverage to continue as usual. I hope history will prove me wrong. |

You talk about Japan and Hiroshima. Don't you think having talks is a better way to avoid such? Sanctions, mismanagement and famine have decimated North Korea econony and this may be a good opportunity to offer security guarantees and economic benefits in exchange for peace. Far away from Nigeria you may may not feel the urgency of the situation but for those living in the region eg Japan, South Korea etc this will be very welcome. Families may be able to reunite after decades. Look at history, when Reagan started speaking to Gorbachev people were against it but it helped bring down the Berlin wall in Germany and played a part in the end of the cold war. When Obama shook hands with Castro at Mandela's burial people said how could he but guess what, we are now seeing the beginning of peace and opening up the country. Seeing the need it seems people due to their hatred of Trump will rather the summit fail so they can say I told you so rather than hope it suceeds for the benefit of the people in the region and peace. There is a lot more at stake here than I told you he's stupid. EzendiEgo1:
Why trump and Kim Jong-un the behave like small kids.
Why can't they do their summit in peace without the world hearing about it.
As Old as Trump is, there's no atom of shame in him. You are 71yrs old while this idiot is 38yrs but still yet he place himself so low to have a summit with this fool.
I have so much respect in America president ( Franklin D. Roosevelt ) he can't take this rubbish act by Childish president trying to compare U.S strength.
North Korea shouldn't allow this fool to destabilize them. They should learn from what happened to Japan in 1941Hiroshima:20,000 soldiers killed70,000–126,000 civilians killed Nagasaki:39,000–80,000 killedTotal: 129,000–226,000+ killed

Fair enough which was why i said unless it's for their kids future. Still depending on where they are in Nigeria you can end up giving up a lot but you are right the kids will have better opportunities as they will grow up in the system. The important thing for me is people need to be upfront and clear of expectations eg I have seen people who say I am going for kids but then when reality hits they start getting disillusioned and discouraged that they are unable to secure jobs at similar levels they are used to. Leads to some degree of frustration once the honeymoon period is over. ednut1: most pple are not coming for economic reasons but good life for themselves nd kids. |

UK, US, Canada Australia etc are all different so I wouldn't use your UK experience for Canadian expectations. Also don't forget there has been a high number of migration to Canada over the past few years which means those opportunities are diluted given the number of people in competition. The Canadian economy is not currently growing as fast as the number of people coming in. Having said that it all depends on where you are coming from and what you do. IF not too senior or not a high earner then it may be worth it as it takes time to be established. If you are fairly senior and established in your career or a high earner, I will be wary unless you are doing it for your kids future. ednut1: i hv about uk. Which is similar |

Very true but this is because the legal ways are always over subscribed and let's be honest we can't expect the US to keep increasing the limits based on what people from other countries want. Mexicans want to be able to come freely, indians are flooding in, Chinese Nigerian etc all want easy entry. Haba Canada is taking in lots of people at the moment but it is not because people want to come but because they realize they need people to counter low birth rate and help sustain future pension obligations etc. Once they reach an optimum number they will cut down same Australia recently did. hiawathia1981: I once thought like you. I believe that many Americans are very accepting of immigration. Every time this topic comes up, you hear, "let them come the right way." Well so few of us even know what the right way entails. So what is left for people to do who are desperately trying to build a life for themselves and their families? I just dont know anymore. |

For a Canadian citizen there is no restriction so he/she can. For a permanent resident I will advice you become a citizen first to remove any risk of losing your residency. Nigeria and Canada allows dual citizenship so no harm compared to India who doesn't and adds extra complexity. Tbh after about 5 years as a resident you are eligible for citizenship anyway so by the time retirement age comes (depending on when the person migrated) you should have been a citizen. Alternatively if the person is old he/she many not really need the residency anymore and will be happy to retire permanently in Nigeria so no harm. Electroweb: So therefore its not easy for an old person (immigrant) with permanent residency or a canadian citizen to travel to his initial home country to retire. |

The only thing to be aware of is if a permanent resident you need to make sure you don't flout the requirements for maintaining your status i.e. you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in every 5-year period. If a citizen there is no such restriction and you can go and come as you please. The constitution says you can only rule for 2 consecutive 4 year terms so after his first 2 terms he ran as PM and put his crony in as president and guess what the so called crony Medevev or whatever his name also swaped from PM to president as Putin went from President to PM. After a term as agreed Putin ran again and back to President. And guess what Medevev went back to PM. Will be interesting to see what he will do after this term given its the second term. Will he change the constitution or do the PM switch again. At the end of this term he will have been in power for 20 years. As PM he was still in control as he changed the constotiokt to give the PM more power and Medevev is pretty much his crony. Johnzzy: Please let no one start comparing this to African leaders.
African leaders hold on to power disregarding ANY constitution authority and maing it by all means. The closest any African leader got to holding on to power legally was during Obasanjo's third term bid.
