CareerRe: Why Do Lawyers Always Wear Wig Caps by Venerable612(m): 7:57am On Oct 21, 2019
Olayishade:
Lawyers wearing wig to court depends on the jurisdiction of the court they are going to
There is no need for a lawyer to wear a wig if he is having a case in high court, appeal court and other lower courts
But if he has a case in Supreme Court then it’s a must for him to put his wig
Another reason why lawyers put on wig is to dinstinguish between a senior advocate that is a SAN from a junior lawyer(ordinary Barristers)
SAN are to put on a wig in a court to show that they are senior advocate of Nigeria
This is not correct.

I will understand if you are not a lawyer. But if you are, then this is disappointing.

Nigerian Lawyers have to put on their regulation wear (Black suit, usually with Baristers jacket and trousers, with white collarless shirts etc.) and a wig and gown - in all the SUPERIOUR COURTS OF RECORD (High Courts and above e.g.Court of Appeal, National Industrial Courts, Supreme Courts etc.)

But in the Lower Courts (e.g. Magistrate Courts, Customary Courts, Area Courts, Sharia Courts)... a lawyer may not necessarily put on the regulation wear and wig and gown.

In fact, if you visit the Magistrate Courts, where 80% of Nigeria cases starts from - you would hardly see a Lawyer in wig and gown. They are all in Suits (doesn’t even have to be black... but can be dark blue suit and Dark grey suit).

Most people on this thread are not lawyers - but they have been displaying their ignorance to the world. Even in tribunals... the wig and gown may not be adorned.

Bottom line is that if Is a regulation wear. The same way Doctors put on White robes in the Hospital instead of Black robes. Same way engineers and military men have their regulation wears.

Is there a problem with that?

its not about the cloth, it's about class, same applies for all ostentatious goods.
ArticleBeast:
It is brand identity. The same with Rolls Royce, Apple and other luxury product.
I totally agree with you that the brand is being sold. But You can’t compare both classes of goods.

You probably get the best apple product right now for Nigerian #700k.

Thats 3 times less than the piece of clothing identified above.

1. the cost of producing the Apple #700k product and the technology involved should be valued roughtly 350k (if not more than, I am not a technologist.). Same goes with the Rolls-Royce. The raw materials, cost of production and value of the product is still commensurate with the Price. The cost of producing this clothing is in no way commensurate with #2.3m

2. As an entertainer. You probably won’t like to be seen putting on a piece of clothing for more than one or two events - no matter how much you bought it. But your average Rolls-Royce or Apple product is your every day showbiz. In other words, you will probably derive more value from both brands than clothings.

3. Nd lastly, the Rolls-Royce and Apple products are conduits to making more money. E.g. I have made so much money through my iPhone... way way above the value I bought it. So Yh, the investment paid off. Same way loads of rich people take their Rolls-Royce to close multi-million naira deals.

Bottom line is that - a piece of clothing does actually worth less compared its price Nd the other luxurious goods you alluded to.

Again- I understand it’s showbiz.
CelebritiesRe: Wizkid Wore N2.3M Jacket To His Starboy Fest In London (Photos) by Venerable612(m): 7:47am On Oct 20, 2019
How a cloth maker can justify selling a piece of clothing for #2.3m beats me.

The materials plus the knitting probably does not cost more than #300k.

It’s mostly just the name or Brand that these folks pay for.

The irony of it is the notorious economic doctrine of diminishing returns. I hope these guys do sure have a heap of investments for the benefit of their kids and future generations.

Otherwise, they’d be surprised this piece of clothing will sell for less than #1000 in the next two decades - perhaps in the same value their career would inevitably depreciate with time.

It’s called Kinesics....

It speaks a lot about a person.

The manner in which Sanwo Olu points and carries his body - you can deduce that he has an overbearing personality.

He doesn’t just point at objects, he points at people too. And in Yoruba land, it is disrespectful to Point at other people, unless of course an elder to a younger relationship.

It doesn’t mean he is proud - it just means he bossy.

The irony is that I find him to be an incompetent governor by Lagos’s standard.

When will we stop accusing the Government for everything?

What I see mostly are ill-baked graduates. It’s one of unemployability and not of unemployment.

There is more to employment than degrees. I have had the privilege of working with graduates in Nigeria and;
- quite a number don’t even know how to use basic Microsoft office products.

-You will be surprised by the number that can’t string two complete sentences together.

- No commercial awareness at all. They don’t even know what’s happening in the business world, nor do they follow policies of the government (e.g. CBN policies) that may impact the industries they are working in.

These are soft skills that the government won’t teach, but are really valued by employers.

It is also for the same reasons we have poor performing businesses. I quite agree there are harsh social factors - such as bad roads, poor electricity and high cost of some raw materials; which might make productivity difficult.

My concern really is that we youths need to build ourselves. Get necessary skills - so many tech stuffs out there now. With these skills, a graduate will be an asset rather than just an employee. And when you are opportuned to travel out of the country - you will surprised at the avalanche of opportunities there to thrive better.

Let’s quit blaming the government for everything and build ourselves!

Unless you can explain what interest the State of Lagos has in this private event, you do well to not defend him.

What has Land mass got to do with acquisitions of private entities- unless Lagos state owns part of the land; which I very much doubt.

I've always been a fan of military most especially the Us and Royal Marines, now my question is this. The Israeli has an intelligence agency MOSSAD, the Americans CIA and the British MI6. Which Intelligence Agency does Nigeria have?
I think you made wrong comparisons.

The military and US Marines have their intelligence departments, separate from the CIA, although they may sometimes have an inter-agency operation.

Intelligence Agencies are executive in nature- plain cloths and more about combating internal Nd external terrorism threats.

And to your question, Yes, Nigeria does - National Intelligence Agency. If you ask me, it’s not as functional as the British MI6 or Israeli MOSSADS; for the same reasons that Nigeria is backward in a lot of things.

I know it’s wrong to sit behind doors talking about the Boko Haram insurgency while the real soldiers are on the battlefield - I think this war could have been won if our intelligence Agency was sophisticated.

E.g.
1. Undercover agents to infiltrate the ranks of the Boko guys. No better way to win a war than have your agents moving up the rank to find out their hidden schemes. It’s just like a Trojan horse, or a malware.

2. the info from the under covers, Aim for their leader (s). When you cut off the head, the body cannot think. They will become divided and a divided kingdom cannot stand. I am pretty sure their leaders don’t sit duck in the wilderness their entire lives.

Just saying.
EducationRe: Singapore Abolishes School Exam Rankings, Says Learning Is Not Competition by Venerable612(m): 3:14am On Oct 15, 2019
hustlelegit:
Whether a child finishes first or last will no longer be indicated in primary and secondary school report books from next year in Singapore, – a move which Education Minister Ong Ye Kung hopes will show students that “learning is not a competition”.

Report books will not just stop showing a student’s position in relation to class or cohort. The information to be dropped includes:

Class and level mean
Minimum and maximum marks
Underlining and/or colouring of failing marks
Pass/fail for end-of-year result
Mean subject grades
Overall total marks
L1R5 (English plus five relevant subjects), L1R4 , EMB3 (English, maths, best three subjects) and EMB1 for lower secondary levels
The Ministry of Education (MOE) said on Friday (Sept 28) that the change is to allow each student to focus on his or her learning progress and discourage them from being overly concerned about comparisons.
From next year all examinations for Primary 1 and 2 pupils will also be removed, and whatever forms of assessment they have will not count towards an overall grade.

The MOE said that teachers will continue to gather information about pupils’ learning through discussions, homework and quizzes. Schools will use other ways like “qualitative descriptors”, in place of marks and grades, to evaluate pupils’ progress at these two levels
For older students in primary schools and secondary schools, marks for each subject will be rounded off and presented as a whole number, without decimal points – to reduce the focus on academic scores. Parents will continue to receive information about their child’s progress in school during parent-teacher meetings.

In an address to some 1,700 school leaders earlier this week, Mr Ong said: “I know that ‘coming in first or second’, in class or level, has traditionally been a proud recognition of a student’s achievement. But removing these indicators is for a good reason, so that the child understands from young that learning is not a competition, but a self-discipline they need to master for life.
Notwithstanding, the report book should still contain some form of yardstick and information to allow students to judge their relative performance, and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.”

From Appointment of Justices of the Supreme Court to the funding of the whole Judiciary - it trickles down from the Executives.

No country in the world runs a totally independent Judiciary. E.g. Judiciary don’t make budgets... their budgetary allocations are determined by the Executives. Think along that line.

True.

There is an existing treaty between the NIWA and Lagos State on this already.

However, MoUs are not binding as such. That’s why I don’t really advise it as an instrument of agreement. Best thing to do is to go for a Terms of Settlement between the parties and proceed to the High Court to enter it as a consent judgment.

Truth be told - all Inter state water ways in Lagos are within the exclusive jurisdiction of the NA/FG. And I think the story reads that Amaechi was particular about the Ports. If lagos state constructs it - they will have a claim on the revenue.
