The Northern States Governors Forum has said it is the responsiblity of Northern leaders to find opportunities for the people of the North. This statement was made by Borno Governor, Kashim Shettima, the Chairman of the Forum whilst speaking on the issue of poverty during the 50th anniversary of the death of the late Premier of the north, Sir Ahmadu Bello. Shettima said, “Unemployment in the north is extremely high. Nigeria is a country of two nations, the South is much more stable and prosperous, the north on the other hand is in a poverty trap. In Nigeria, poverty wears a northern cap, if you are looking for a poor man, get somebody wearing a northern cap.” “Sardauna was a leader of his own generation and every generation come up with its own style of leader. Sardauna did remarkably well for the North and for the nation, our duty, especially for those of us in the North is in our interest to invest in the people. “Nigeria’s population will double in the next 23 years. By 2020, Nigeria’s population will be around 210 million. By 2030, there will be about 270million Nigerians and by 2050, when old men like me might not be around, the population will be around 440million. “By then, we will be the third most populous nation on earth and most importantly, 70% of the population will be living in Northern Nigeria. Deforestation, desertification, joblessness, hopelessness, illetracy, unemployment, low access to health facilities are all recepies for disaster. “It is in our enlightened self interest as northern leaders to invest in the people, to invest in agriculture, to create jobs because, there is a direct correlation with endemic poverty and most of the crisis threatening the north,” he added. http://www.theheraldng.com/the-north-is-a-poverty-trap-northern-governors-forum-seek-solutions/?utm_source=dlvr.it_nnd&utm_medium=twitter |

Berlin (CNN)A spate of alleged sexual assaults and robberies at New Year's Eve festivities in the German city of Cologne has fueled a political firestorm over immigration in Germany. Ninety criminal incidents, a quarter of which were sexual assaults, were reported following New Year's Eve celebrations in the city, Cologne police told CNN. Police said victims described the perpetrators as gangs of Arab or North African men. Many of the assaults were likely intended to distract, allowing attackers to steal mobile phones and other devices, police said. Authorities said the crimes, including a rape, occurred around the train station, next to the western German city's landmark cathedral. Video footage of the celebrations in the area show riotous scenes, with revelers shooting fireworks into crowds. In a phone call with Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker Tuesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed outrage over the attacks, labeling them "disgusting" and calling for the culprits to be identified and punished as soon as possible, CNN affiliate ARD reported. Cologne police Chief Wolfgang Albers said at a press conference Monday that the incidents were "intolerable," describing them as "crimes of a totally new dimension." The episode raised questions about the viability of Cologne's famous Carnival next month when hundreds of thousands are expected to join celebrations on city streets, he said. A smaller number of similar assaults also were reported in the German city of Hamburg on New Year's Eve, Hamburg police told CNN. 'We as women suffered' One of the Cologne victims said she was too scared to go out alone following the ordeal. "The men surrounded us and started to grab our behinds and touch our crotches," she said. "They touched us everywhere. I wanted to take my friend and leave. I turned around and in that moment someone grabbed my bag." She said she feared she could be killed or raped by the attackers. "Nobody noticed and nobody helped us. I just wanted to get out." Another victim said she had unsuccessfully tried to fight off her assailant. "But there were so many people around me that there was no control. There was no way out. There was no way to protect yourself," she said. "We ran to the police. But we saw the police were so understaffed. They couldn't take care of us and we as women suffered the price." Protests, crisis meeting The New Year's Eve reports have sparked a fierce outcry in Germany, with protesters gathering at the site of the alleged attacks. On social media, some accused the news media of failing to report on the assaults in a timely fashion due to sensitivities around the alleged ethnic identities of the assailants. Germany has taken the largest numbers of migrants from the influx that has created a crisis on Europe's borders, but many Germans have expressed opposition to the sudden arrival of so many, predominantly Muslim, migrants, questioning their ability to adapt to a European way of life. Inside march against Islam in Germany Inside march against Islam in Germany 02:24 Read more: Germany's anti-migrant protest -- 'We don't want to be strangers in our own country' Following a crisis meeting with the city's police Tuesday, Reker, Cologne's mayor, said at a press conference that the perpetrators would be pursued and measures taken to prevent any repeats of such incidents. In cooperation with police, her office will produce a book of rules on how to behave during Carnival. "We have to explain to people from other cultures that the jolly and frisky attitude during our Carnival is not a sign of sexual openness," Reker said. Albers, the police chief, said at the conference Tuesday that the description from the victims was the only thing known about the perpetrators. Police have received a lot of cell phone footage from the evening that will take time to work through, he said. A migration issue? German Justice Minister Heiko Maas said at a press conference Tuesday that assaults were "not acceptable" and "must not be allowed to be repeated." "We must clarify if what happened is a new form of organized crime against which the state must take measures," he said. German Justice Minister Heiko Maas addresses the assaults in Cologne. German Justice Minister Heiko Maas addresses the assaults in Cologne. Maas also warned against linking the assaults to the immigration issue, which has become a subject of heated debate in Germany. "During these investigations it will become clear which circle of perpetrators is involved," he said. "Making this an issue through over-simplifications, and connecting it to the issue of refugees is nothing more than misuse of the debate. Now it is about determining the facts and drawing the necessary conclusions," he said. Europe's migrant crisis by the numbers Europe's migrant crisis by the numbers 01:17 But other politicians were forthright in linking the reported assaults to Germany's welcoming approach to migrants. Steffen Bilger, a member of parliament for Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, tweeted that the reportsdemonstrated the urgent need for Germany to reduce its migrant intake, secure its borders, intensify deportations and uphold "consistent justice." http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/05/europe/germany-cologne-new-year-assaults/index.html?sr=fbcnni010616germany-cologne-new-year-assaults0210AMVODtopLink&linkId=20124050 |

For over a year now,my meter at home has been faulty. All my pleas and entreaties to the phcn officials in my locality to get me a new meter has so far not been successful. To get a pre-paid meter is another wahala. peepz I know who have paid for it have not gotten it after about 4months of payment. I finally found out that even if I had gotten a new meter,it wouldn't have made any difference seeing that the meters are not read. All the houses in my locality gets estimated billing which falls in the region of #7000 a month for each flat. I have been paying that grudgingly. Fast forward to yesterday,I came back and met this Xmas card from Eko electric distribution company with my normal #7000 bill attached to it ooo. This is a classic case of the rat biting you and blowing u cool breeze to reduce the pain so you wouldn't notice

Finland is considering scrapping all welfare benefits and paying everyone $10,000 a year instead. The Finnish government, elected earlier this year, is planning to introduce a tax-free monthly payment of 800 euros ($865) to all adult Finns, regardless of income, wealth or employment status. The payment would replace most other state benefits. The government thinks that the move will actually save money. Finland's welfare system is very complex and expensive to run, and the government hopes that simplifying it could reduce costly bureaucracy. It also argues that the change may encourage more people to look for work. About 9.5% of Finns are currently out of work -- the highest rate in more than a decade -- and the government believes some people are deterred from working because they're better off on unemployment benefit than accepting a minimum wage job. The center-right coalition government, which was elected earlier this year, is planning to finalize the proposal in 2016 and run a pilot program in 2017. The agency in charge of welfare and national social security is currently designing the program. A trial period could see it make payments of 550 euros a month, while still offering some additional benefits such as housing support. The government commissioned an opinion poll in September, which found that 69% of Finns agree with the plan. It has not published estimates of the costs, and did not reply to CNNMoney's request for comment. Assuming every adult gets the payment, the program could cost between 40 billion and 50 billion euros ($54 billion) a year. The richest would pay most of their share back in taxes, the government said. According to Finnish media, labor unions are opposed to the plan. http://money.cnn.com/2015/12/07/news/economy/finland-basic-income-800-euros?sr=fbcnni120815finland-basic-income-800-euros0200PMStoryLink&linkId=19406291 |
