The speed at which BOC and UNIC dey move is too dangerous!!! Na autopilot we dey? Na no brake no jam OOO. If no be say na me be co pilot and that na from Economy I move go cockpit I go dey fear!!!. Any way make we balance well well as we move to higher altitude to avoid the storm.

Cabin crew, take your seat and get ready for landing (well that is still a long time away so enjoy the trip while it last)

For those just joining, have a smooth ride.

For FBN, no shaking. PO, Rights and co just credited. There will be sellers. Opportunity for people to go onboard. Please note that this na LONG HAUL flight. No stop overs.

This problem with this arrangement is that Inter will be one of those that will be 'disavantaged' by this uniform reporting business. After Feb 08 which is  Intercontinental FY and they are now forced to report FY again in Dec'08 they will only be reporting 10 months in effect for full-year which will not look good in comparison with other banks that have their  FY  before the end of '07 which means they will be reporting for >12 months by Dec'08

Not sure how this requirement changes anything though. Why change a winning formula? We just like to flex muscle for naija Na wa o!
There use to be uniform year end before. It was when budget were being unduely presented late that everything changed.

Well, some will present 9months, others 12 months, some 15months and some others 18months. But at the end of the day, na sentimental effect. Not sure that it will even be implemented. The auditors will find it difficult to handle.

I asked my bank and this is strange to them. they only send confirmation of transmital of funds
what bank is that?
stop asking the cashiers, just move to the foreign exchange section.they will do the trick once the money came in through them.
for me, money wey reach home don reach home be that,no going back. CIC or see i see na tori
You need a CIC if you intend to repatriate the money. If not you will have hassles explaining the source of the money. Yes  a bank transfer it but what is the source. The CIC basically showed that you brought money in, invest it and now repatriating it 'home'. If you don't have the mind of repatriating don't worry. However if you do, get CIC or you may have a money laundering charge upon your head especially if you have an Osama Bin Laden type of name or look.

Surprises:
OFFER ALLOTMENT

I hear that with SPECIAL arrangement, one can get all its allotment in some public offers.  A friend did it, and he got all 5,000,000 units.  Is this practice ok by SEC?  With all these returned money, should one be surprised?  Have you heard something similar?  Japaul and Int. Breweries are a case in point.
Forget it!!! Even those that went under preferentiall allotment did not get all they wanted. Just check out Access Bank for example. While it is advantageous, it is not full proof.
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by wanaj0: 5:15pm On Jan 30, 2008
Crazy T, you will need Capital Importation certificate for ease of repatriation or else you may be accused of money laundering. In effect it shows that you brought in money (through the banks) and so you can repatriate it also through the banking system.

That shows that the PP is genuine. The thing ended 2005 so if you entered in 2007, na late comer you be. Well, the PP is still open for those that want to enter in 2008 as I am hearing. That shows that allotment/allocation is not yet done so you will need to wait for those buying now so that you can get your certificates together. Remember IGI?

Livestock is one of the wonder stocks on NSE. Nigerian Wire Cable is another one. Factory under lock and key but with rumours of turn around etc for the past two years also. Not that much info is available.

I understand when the portfolio grows to a particular level, it will not be possible to concentrate on such stocks again but for the growing period, these are still valid candidates.
You got it now.

Aside, while penny stocks seems to offer the highest return, note also that they can be very STAGNANT!!!!!! Sometimes no trade on them at all for a week!!!!! So, the strategy is not foolproof especially for short term. Nothing as bad as carrying your good to the market with no buyer. It's like a beautiful lady dancing naked just to attract suitors and still no one dey look her side.

Liquidity is key in developing a strategy for stock market investing.

pumping777:
I still believe that you can make the billionaire's list faster today with other stocks apart from banking and there are very good candidates and I'm not talking about penny stocks without good fundamentals.

A friend traded around N55M on the following stocks between November last year and this January. AGLeventis, Beta Glass, CILeasing, Lawunion, Japaul, Unic and Crusader. To be fair he also carried a lot of Japaul over from TS. No banking stock. I never agreed with his portfolio but he insisted he was not touching any high cap company. Net profit to the bank was about N26M. These are the little drops that make the ocean.

Agreed, maybe his luck will not always hold but the point is this. Nothing in banking could have given such returns in those same 2 months as it were, CICO or otherwise. I also traded on all the stocks above but together with banking and some other stocks that drove down my average.

He has his eyes on N500M and the plan is definitely not to hit the target in a year but in a few years it is still possible to make all the money he wants looking at other sectors. On the NSE, nominal price matters so much.
Pumping, If I have 10m units of Chellarams how long do you think it will take for me to sell them? same for Beta Glass, C & I Leasing etc. Look at Nigerian German and the total number of oustanding shares. So while in terms of %age gain you make money, when it comes to volume, you are disadvantaged. What I tell people is that when you are young and agressive with small portfolio, go for this high risk, illiquid but potentially growth stock. As your portfolio size increases, you will find out that you will need to move towards the large cap stocks.

With N1bn war chest, you will likely buy 25m units of first bank. That order can be filled in like a month. For C & I, Trans Express, Chellarams, it will take till thy kingdom come. Some did not have that quantity traded over the whole year!!!!! That is the difference.

The insurance sector is liquid now because of the just concluded consolidation programme which led to a rash of offers. Prior to that, check the volume traded.

A few months ago I was begging for information and opinions about Thomas Wyatt and was completely ignored.
I have just sold a sizeable chunk of my holding and did not even take up all of my rights!!
Any particular reason why it is hot play now?

Samstone4 cool cool cool
Thomas Wyatt always on the radar but it was scarce!!! Why you no pick up your rights. As a matter of principle, any offer which is purely RIGHTS is a must buy. If the major shareholders are putting in money (not converting debt to equity) then they believe in the future of teh company nad they are putting their money there. So always go for it. If it is a mixed, Rights and Po, check the ratio well.

Thomas Wyatt is passing through a turn around. It may take some time but will do well. Not a LONG TERM holding though.

RoughCut:
What you have just said corroborates the point i was trying to make they have only issued bonus twice in 4 years! i wouldnt mind that at all.

If you realise that 5% of N200 gives you N40 is a lot more tangible than 5% of 10N which is 50k. If i bought a stock for N200 and for every N1.00 i spent buying that stock i'm getting 20k appreciation i think it makes a lot more sense than 5k i will be getting for every N1.00 i have spent buying the N10 stock. Until we still divest ourselves of the mentality on the NSE that the more you cut a cake into pieces the bigger is what comes to you i think all these issues with share construction/reconstruction will not go away!

If your analogy with FBN and Unity bank by some fluke happens to hold true then i suppose Unity bank would probably not exist as we know it today that comparison na helele
Most people no dey read grammar. In Nigeria, very few people have Nestle because it is too "expensive". thats what is affecting ETI. Who will buy a bank for over N200.00 when FBN is N40.00. That is the sentiment and you need to understand that. Even teh lazy brokers and analyst that we have do such kind of comparison. After FBN declared 1 for 1, brokers where still telling you that if UBN was 40.00 then First Bank will move closer because 'the prices alwsys mirrors each other@

Flour Mills, Ashaka, Wapco etc even the petroleum marketing sectors have the same dividend policy. Really, na only FirstBank and GTB dey be free donor when it come to Bonus. Even UBN na like one very three years. However with poor performnace UBN started using bonus to cover up.

Well, well, thanks to everyone that responded to my earlier shout-out. I guess I might really consider contributing to the discussions here. I believe I might have some part to play here.

Anyways, I have been investing in the stock market for quite a while now. I must confess I have made a lot of money from it in different ways. I still learn everyday.

Hey, I have 2 questions here;
1. What do you think of UBN in the short term?
2. Is Sterling Bank a good deal right now?

I'm thinking of letting go my holding in UBN (I made a big hit there) and getting into Sterling/EcoBank. Any market info on these?

Thanks all.
Foor me UBN na SELL for short, medium and LONG. I mean the mangement is totally BEREFT of ideas. Out of all the old generation banks, it is only UBN that is still stuck in the OLD ways of oing things. Old bank being run by old men with old ideas and old systems. When FBN was doing the V-mobile deal, why can't UBN do MTN or even Glo? They were just there doing like a cash office.

Ecobank/Sterling merger will be a difficult one . Just stay clear.

Get someone wey go dey hustle for floor ringing bell for the stock. Some PP's were done like that. Guinea insurance was one. universe Re was another. Even the issuing houses no go get name.

Ha. You just touched on my point. I am not "complaining" that the banking stocks are losing value. I am just looking at it that it may not be the right time to dive deeper into the sector pending when the sentiments change. So if the price of the banking stocks will be this way until the next batch of results I want to put my money to work elsewhere.

My trading portfolio has very limited banking stocks. Despite the volumes and capitalization, I have realized that I don't get significant gains from banking stocks short term.

In my little experiece so far, my non-banking stocks have consistently outperformed banking stocks in the short term. Yes, my long term portfolio has about 40% banking stocks but that is a different kettle of fish.
that's the problem with timing the market. You cannot!!!

Now when you talk of short term, it also depend on your starting point. That's what people miss when they do analysis. They all don't have the same cycle (that will change with uniform end year and it will make the market dull because peaks and troughs will occur at the same time and no more CICO).

Apart from banking stocks, many few sectors have the amount of units to amke you a 'billionaire'. That's why people get stuck with the banking stocks. If you are trading with small funds, you can be doing the otehr sectors but for the big tickets, na banking. just stay in and cool temper. you go enjoy later.

That would be fine if they are not going to be issuing  bonuses left right and center. Look at Nestle it has a high nominal price but i can't remember the last time they issued a bonus and it is a good quality stock any day steady growth with no unnecessary stock dilution which adds value to the stock and shareholding.

The penchant for issuing  'bonus' with a view to artificially inflating  the share price is the problem i have with all these coys
Nestle issued bonus for year end Dec 2002 and Dec 2006. 1 for 4 in both instances.

They normally do it partly to correct the price. Due to sentiments and emotions, it is easier for a 1.00 stock to gain 5% than for a N200.00 stock. You know peoples perception is that a N200.00 stock is more expensive than a N10.00stock especially when we are in the same sector. Imagine First Bank @ N40.00 and Unity Bank @ N100.00 due to share reconstruction. What do you think will happen to Unity bank shares. That's why I love Soludo's plan to knock of some zeros from the naira. That way, things 'look' cheap all over again.
