Fuel scarcity: Banks to shut down ATMs ON MAY 25, 2015

Although the Petroleum products marketers and the Federal Government, Monday, reached an agreement over the lingering fuel crisis in the country, there are strong indications that commercial banks may close their business offices and even shut down Automated Teller Machines, ATMs, across the nation if petroleum products are not readily available.

Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, MOMAN, had agreed to call off their strike action over unpaid subsidy claims and commence lifting of petroleum products nationwide.

Meanwhile, some of the commercial banks in Lagos including Guarantee Trust Bank, First City Monument Bank, FCMB, among others on Monday sent text messages to their customers on the possibility of shutting down banking operations if the situation continues.

House will not water down N10billion Jet scam- Reps
ABUJA----Just as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, has directed the Public Accounts Committee to begin hearing on the alleged N10 billion air charter services scam involving Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, a member of the PAC Friday morning over the phone informed Per Second News that the House ‘will not try to water down the Jet Scandal’. The House of Representatives had on March 27, mandated the accounts committee to commence an investigative hearing into the scam, but the probe was shelved because the Minister of Petroleum Resources had gone to court on that same date.

“At our meeting on Thursday we have collated evidence from Excujet Hanger and Vistajet, two private companies connected to the jet charter deal. Nigerians in their numbers have submitted credible documents, it is also noteworthy that we have been receiving memos from whistle blowers, who have indicated interest to appear before the committee to testify”.

More austerity measures coming – Okonjo-Iweala
Following the continuous decline of the price of crude oil in the international market, the Federal Government on Thursday said it was preparing additional measures to mitigate the impact of the price drop on the Nigerian economy.
She had during a public presentation of the 2015 budget proposal listed the stoppage of the purchase of new furniture, and reduction in international travels and trainings by government officials by 50 per cent as some of the austerity measures to be taken this year to boost revenue.

Others are the implementation of the Stephen Orasanye committee’s report on the rationalisation of the civil service; and introduction of 10 per cent tax on private jets, three per cent surcharge on champagnes and one per cent property tax on mansions with value exceeding N300m.

Between December 17, 2014 when the budget proposal was submitted, with oil benchmark price pegged at $65 per barrel, and now, global oil prices have further crashed to around $46 per barrel.

The development has further heightened tension in the country because of the Federal Government’s almost total dependence on crude oil exports for its revenue

Specifically, Okonjo-Iweala told the children that 2015 would be a very difficult year for the economy, noting, however, that with appropriate fiscal and monetary policy instruments, the government would manage the economy in a manner that would be beneficial to all.
