I said it three days ago, that the national conference is an after thought by President Jonathan to gain political advantage. It has no law backing it, no procedure, no budget, nothing. it will just be a cacophony of opinions. Have you people forgotten that the supreme law is the constitution? any law contrary to the constitution is null and void. The president has not even said the whole truth, any recommendation from the national conference would go to the national assembly and it has to be approved by 2/3 majority, it also has to go through the state assemlies and has to be approved by 2/3 majority of 2/3 of the states, before going back to jonathan for final accent. Now tell me how that is different from the current constituional amendment. And all these must be achieved before the next elections. |
As much as I desire a constitutional or national conference, I am in agreement with Tinubu on this one. GEJ had never been a supporter or advocate of a national conference, it is obvious he is using it as a political bait to achieve his personal aims and objectives. many other African leaders had used such conferences to enlongate their stay and become a dictator. If the conference is subjected to tinkerings and approvals by the national assembly and the president, then the whole purpose of the conference has been defeated. If there is no legal backing for the national conference, then the proposed conference would just be a talkshop, just like nairaland. How will the provisions of the conference relate to the constitution? can the conference go contrary to the constitution? There is not enough time for the conference, unless GEJ wants to shift the 2014 elections. If elections are to be held February 2014, it means we have less than 16 months before elections. By this time next year most politicians would be preoccupied with electioneering. There is simply not enough time to assemble delegates, make appropriate laws - including budget and then the actual conference itself. This socalled national conference is not well thought out at all. |
hopilo: Private sector anywhere in the world create 80% of jobs, govt.20% the advise is good, they should go and be among the 80% job creators. However I blame govt. in one area, and that is inability to make funds available as loan facilities with single digit intrest. The corp members might have brilliant ideas to be job creators but facility not found. That is what the bank of industry should be doing. It pains me to have to lecture nigerian graduates ( or undergraduates on basic macro economics). In any economy Government is the prime driver of the economy and is in fact the biggest spender. Govenment activities and policies leads to Job creation and Job growth. When we say it is the responsibility of governments to create jobs, we do not mean that govenment should hire all its citizens. What it means is that govenment should ensure policies that will result in job growth. Be it interest rates, import and export policies, tax incentives, govenment patronage, cheap capital , infrastructural incentives, like power, roads, rail, water and most important of all good legal system. A prime destroyer of businesses in Nigeria is our corrupt and inefficient legal system where it is difficult settling simple business disagreements such a debts. I know many companies that had closd down as a result of bad debts. In the US and Europe, the government gives figures of job growth and unemployment figures every month and here a governors is abdicating his responsibility to create jobs. |
Aromas: Why did you think negative, u take head nack ground during your day's in primary school? Most of the outstanding countries we are all shouting their names today are mostly on creativity. Someone like you we graduate and still be expecting your parent to give you pocket moneyWhat are you talking about? I hope you are not one of those who obtained a master's or doctorate degree from our university without getting educated. What are you talking about? creativity can never be gotten in isolation. pre-requisites for creativity includes good education, good health, good nutrition stable and conducive environment and security. It is impossible to be creative when so much energy is being expended on basic survival activities. Then creativity on it own does not lead to success, the creative ideas has to be Commercialized to make any money. Believe me there are so many creative people who are commercal failures. Now back to the topic. It is an abomination for an elected government official to tell the people that elected himm into office to create job themselves. If such advice was coming from Dangote or Adenuga, I would appreciate the advice, but not from someone whose prime responsibily is to ensure the welfare of the people that elected him. why did the Governors not create job for himself instead of begging the people to elected him into a government office. Or he should have told the electorate that he had no business creating jobs for them during his campaign for office. |
biafranqueen: I agree that is why I thing we should focus as you so eloquently put it " the devil we know" at least I saw new commerce developed with Obi ( not including his billion dollar mall) I also saw that he worked on the roads, the health sector, created new employment opportunities ( even though they were his private companies like the brewery) and tried to work with global organizations like Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Also the biggie for me is that he did not borrow a dime. That in itself is pretty remarkable. The devil we know? I never knew Obi was going for a third term. Dont you think presenting Willy Obiano as Obi's stooge will hurt him electorally? Does he not have other political CV outside being a stooge of Obi? |
If the citizens are to create jobs themselves, create power themselves, create water themselves, create hospitals themselves, create schools themselves, create security themselves, and so on, then why do we need government at all. |
who is Lamode again? please someone remind me. |
very good analysis, this is what is expected of patroits in a democracy - holding public officials accountable. BUT where are the figures for Odili? was Dokubo not alive when Odili was looting this same rivers state? Why does he not present the same beautiful statistics for Uduaghan, Akpabio, Dickson. Then most important of all he should give us a breakdown of revenue acrued jonathan when he took over early 2010 and corresponding expenditure. This will allow us to compare and constrast which Nigerian polititian is the mother of all thieves. |
In theory its a good move, but in practice it will be detrimental to genuine business men. Take for example i am into importation. If i go to a bank to obtain dollars to import goods, apart from exhaustive bureaucratic bottle necks, i am most probably going to be told no dollars now, come back next week. So i would be forced to patronize my favourite mallam at about N160 to the dollar. But if i am to be paid in dollars for the same goods, the banks would give me ridiculous exchange rate like N150 to the dollar. So would it not make better business sense to sell my dollars to alams at N157 and buy from him at N160? |
Jenams: Can u imagine d governor of a state cryin like a baby and callin d president to come and secure his state! Mr governor where is ur resignation letter? Where is it?you must be a learner. The commissioner of police is the defacto head of security of a state in Nigeria, as highlighted by the Amaechi-Mbu saga. The person you should be asking for his resignation is either the commissioner of police, the IG or even the commander in Chief, but definitely not the helpless governor. |
Mr Troll: @Billionaire, like i said you are very much entitled to your facts. Don't just expect us to indulge you. Lets wait for science to discover what you already knowIf life defined by us is presumptuous, then how would you define life? All the physical constants are the same throughout the universe. The mass of the electron, proton and neutron is constant, the charges of these particles are constant. the atomic weight of all the elements in the periodic table are constant. The speed light in a vacuum is constant, etc. in fact physics depends on constants. So why would the laws governing other parts of the universe be significantly different from ours. |
plaetton: Good question Mr. Troll.I have pointed out that it would be difficult for life to be based on silicon. it cannot form uncountable long chain organic compounds and definely it cannot form a long self duplicating molecule like carbon. I said if life could be silicon based then it would have been easier for life on earth to be based on silicon instead of carbon, since silicon is the second most abundant element on earth. Yes some bacteria are known to oxidize hydrogen in methane so yes oxygen is not essential to life. |
Mr Troll: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERNMr Troll, My answer to the above question is a NO. it is not possible for life to exist is too far a way we are used to. This is mainly because the laws of physics are constant throughout the universe. Yes living organisms can use other gases for oxidation of their metabolization processes, but it must be an oxidizing gas or reducable to an oxidizing gas. Nitrogen is out of the question. other gases like Co2. even on earth anearobic bacteria breath CO2 instead of O2. You have to have a concise definition of life to understand that it cannot deviate much from what we already know. Life is a self duplicating process capable of independent eistence. There is only one arramgement of molecules known that can achieve that feat. |
plaetton: My good friend, you surpris me greatly.I have never argued that mars does not have water, what I have maintain is that mars does not have liquid water. it had always been known that mars has a large reservoir of water, but all of it is in the form of solid water (ice), all locked beneath the surface and in the polar ice caps. As soon as the ice melts to liquid, it will evaporate and escape into space. The canals and so called river beds were as a result of liquid water brought to the surface by meteor imact or massive volcanic eruptions, the water would flow only for brief periods of time until it evapourates and escape the planet. There is no hydrological cycle on mars that allows liquid water to be retained on the surface for long periods of time. please show me where any mars rover has discovered liquid water on the surface of mars. I remember that mars has an angle of inclination similar to earths - abour 23 degrees ( I might have to confirm this), but I am certain mars is not resting on its side. the only planet resting on its side is uranus. There is the same argument that the earth must have been knocked into its present 23.5 degrees by an asteroid impact. The earth had been impacted by many massive asteriods in the past. The Mars Program was designed in the 70's and then most scientists were convinced on the possibility of life on mars, and so the program was biased towards looking for signs of life. but now the most important issue is to study the conditions to make a man landing possible. people like carl sagan and other planetary biologist have foreclosed the possibility of finding life on mars and are searching outside the solar system. |
Even though this wikipedia articles reflect the biases of the authors, it still shows the difficulty in proving even microbial life ever existed on mars.- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_on_Mars |
Ranchhoddas: @wirinet:if life on mars is a fantasy, could u please tell us what the curiousity rover is currently doing on mars? Abi u never hear of that one?what curiosity is doing on mars is readily available on the internet. Goals and objectives As established by the Mars Exploration Program, the main scientific goals of the MSL mission are to help determine whether Mars could ever have supported life, as well as determining the role of water, and to study the climate and geology of Mars.[11][12][12] The mission will also help prepare for human exploration.[12] To contribute to these goals, MSL has eight main scientific objectives:[16] Biological Determine the nature and inventory of organic carbon compounds Investigate the chemical building blocks of life (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur) Identify features that may represent the effects of biological processes (biosignatures) Geological and geochemical Investigate the chemical, isotopic, and mineralogical composition of the Martian surface and near-surface geological materials Interpret the processes that have formed and modified rocks and soils Planetary process Assess long-timescale (i.e., 4-billion-year) Martian atmospheric evolution processes Determine present state, distribution, and cycling of water and carbon dioxide Surface radiation Characterize the broad spectrum of surface radiation, including galactic and cosmic radiation, solar proton events and secondary neutrons As part of its exploration, it also measured the radiation exposure in the interior of the spacecraft as it traveled to Mars, and it is continuing radiation measurements as it explores the surface of Mars. This data would be important for a future manned mission. Source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curiosity_(rover) |
We await the day Suntai can. talk for himself and not through one adviser or another. It seems Suntai want to rule through special advisers. I hope Mrs Suntai is not being taken care of by special advisers also |
No wonder Nigeria is a dumping ground for foreign religions, people rather believe fantasies, myths and legends that basic scientific facts and realities. The fantasies of life on mars had been in existence since Galileo invented the telescope and people began viewing the red planet. All kinds of myths had been built around that fantasy. But actual scientific data suggests life could possibly not have evolved on mass. Never mind what some science journalist write to try and sell their magazines to uninformed population. Mars's gravity is too weak to retain liquid water on its surface and adequate gaseous water in atmosphere. Its atmosphere is too thin to retain essential gases. Without an atmosphere harmful radiation from the sun would destroy any organic compound formed on its surface. Then i am still talking of mars being too small to sustain life and someone is talking about photos, which is much smaller than mars and even smaller than our own moon. Photos virtually has zero atmosphere and extremely low gravity. Even our moon is a far more favourable candidate for life than photos. If you like you can show sky scrappers on phobos, it cannot change the laws of physics and biology, life cannot survive on phobos. Nigerian government needs to declare a state of emergency on science education, we are being left behind by the rest of the world. Let me just provide a brief explanation how size of a planet and its surface temperature relates to its ability to support life. As we have generally agreed, the presence of liquid water and an atmosphere among other factors are essential for life. Now water has a narrow range of temperature for remaining liquid (0 - 100'C on earth). Now about atmosphere, the type and amount of gases an atmosphere can retain depends on its gravity which in turn depends on its size. Hydrogen is the lightest gas and it is only massive planets like jupiter, saturn and uranus that can retain Hydrogen in its atmosphere, but the hydrogen usually combine with nitrogen to form Ammonia. That is why these giant planets have a thick atmosphere containing massive ammounts of ammonia. On earth the gravity is not enough to retain hydrogen, so all hydrogen released into its atmosphere escapes into space. Same thing with the next heavier gas Helium. but with water vapour with is only 18 times heavier than hydrogen (H2O), a significant amount is retained in the atmosphere which falls down as rain under favourable conditions. On mars water vapour would not fall down as rain but escape into space. Same thing with the next heavier gases like N2 ( 28 times heavier than hydrogen), O2 (32 times heavier than hydrogen), CO2 (44 tmes heavier than hydrogen) and others. On earth these gases are retained in the atmosphere. Without an atmosphere to provide protection and essential life giving gases, life would be impossible. I hope you people can understand why Mars cannot support life due to its size. if you cannot get it, then there is nothing more I can say, I have tried my best to educate you. |
plaetton: @wirineti have followed every mars exploration from viking1 (1976) to viking2 (1978), i know about the so-called) canals of mars. There are many speculations and myths of what caused them, some say it was dug to bring water from the poles to the equator by martian beings. The most probable explanation is that it was caused by the release of large reservoir of water trapped underground and was brought to the surface after an asteroid impact. Others attribute it to high velocity winds from its thin atmosphere. But one thing is certain, which is that the surface cannot hold liquid water, even its atmosphere cannot retain adequate water vapour. If you want a more concized explanation, you would need to get a book on planetary formation and evolution. Please can you prove the reference on martian bacteria and sea beds on mars. I would love to update my knowledge. |
It would have made more sense if it was Venus that is speculated in the story instead of mars. Venus is very similar to earth except it has a phenomenon call runaway green house effect, which has raised its surface temperature tremendously. It is often called earth's twin. We do not know what caused the runaway green house effect, but without green house, it can probably support all the conditions of life similar to what we have on earth. But as for mars, it is too small to support the conditions necessary for life. |
Ray McBlue: Excuse me Dr astronomer AKA wirinet, what do you think would happen to earth's oxygen rich atmosphere if hydrogen bombs were to go off on earth surface simultaneously or a moon-sized asteroid collided with earth?I honestly do not know how to respond to your question. What will happen to the earth's oxygen rich atmosphere if hydrogen bombs were to go off simultaneously? How many hydrogen bombs are you talking about? Besides hydrogen bombs had been set up in various tests in the past. What was the effect on the atmosphere. If a moon size object were to collide with the earth, it will probably shatter the earth to pieces. And various pieces of it would become asteroids floating within the solar system. And life would become extinct on earth. Even before the impact tidal forces between the earth and the moon would have killed off all living things. These are my honest opinion, can you make your point now. |
plaetton: Bros, can't argue much with you on this.It seems you are finding it a bit difficult letting go of long held preconceived ideas and notions, so much so that you are not even reading what i wrote. I said mars is too small to retain an atmosphere and water vapour. So its surface cannot hold liquid water. If you pour all the water on earth on the surface of mars it will all evaporate into space in a matter of time. The gravity cannot hold water vapour in its atmosphere. Its surface can only hold water in the form of ice (dry ice for that matter). About the ice age, the ice age did not cover the equator. The ice age had little effect on animals living at the equator. It was animals that lived near the poles that was affected. They either move towards the equator or go extinct. If the ice covered the whole planet for any sustain period of time, all of life would be wiped out. |
plaetton: I think it is unreasonable to assert that Mars cannot support life.My brother, i have read all the arguments about life on mars, i have read works by great science thinkers like Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov on the subject and i have read the fall from mars religious angle. So i know what i am talking about. I am not denying the possibility of life having evolved elsewhere in the universe, bit i can confidently say the possibility of life having evolved on mars is very slim. For there to be life on a planet, certain critical conditions must be met. 1. There must be liquid water as water is essential for life processes. And water can only remain liquid between 0 - 100C, this rules out mars. 2. There must be adequate atmosphere to allow living things obtain needed gases like O2, CO2, etc. Mars atmosphere is extremely thin. There is also the myth that another element can take the place of carbon as the superstructure of life. This is a fallacy. Carbon and silicon are the only elements with a covalency of 4, thereby allowing them combine with all elements in a wide variety of ways. But it seems carbon forms more stable compounds than silicon. If life can be silicon based, then life on earth should be based on silicon as earth has far more silicon than carbon. So why did life on earth not formed from silicon? |
Billyonaire: Truely, what he wrote there is crap. I refuse to quote him so I dont promote the crap.A kid who just learnt to spell his name? Between you and i who is a kid in this religious section. I usually dont post anymore in this section but is forced to interject occasionally when i see people with zero scientific knowledge turn their fantasies into science. They just end up contributing to the already pathetic literacy situation in the country. Someone who has passed O/level science cannot argue with anything i wrote. Yes, living things have evolved to oxygen in small amounts in their metabolism processes, and is able to deal with the associated free radicals produced. A high concentration of oxygen is fatal to living things. The so called oxygen tank contains mainly nitrogen and other inert gases with less than 25% oxygen. A 50% oxygen concentration would kill the person. The concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere is just 21% and out of that we breath in a minute percentage at a time. Advanced electromagnetic pulse weaponry? You must have been watching too much matrix. Please Google up what electromagnetic waves are. You need to stop bamboozing gullible people. An electromagnetic pulse is mainly used to disable electronic machines. I knew far more astronomy by age 12 than what you know now. Mars is too small a planet and too far from the sun to sustain life components like liquid water, adequate atmosphere and temperature (gosh this is elementary geography). |
Billyonaire: Heavenly bodies, is what we call planets in our solar system, galaxy and beyond. If we term each of those planets, heaven, we will not be wrong. Folktale is a powerful means of passing down information when we cease to have access to documentary evidences. So, that's how the stories were told until the earliest documentary evidences of about 6yrs old in the good book, Bible. All you wrote above is scientific mumbo jumbo. Electromagnetic pulse is nothing more than a pulse of light - from cosmic radiattion down to gamma rays. Heaven is a term used to descibe any place beyond the clouds. all other objects in the sky above the clouds are said to be in heaven. Oxygen is actually harmful to life, and it was its absence at the early earth that permitted life to form. It is highly oxidative in nature and oxidizes most substances it comes in contact with. It reaction with living things creates free radicals which kills living cells. life had evolve to deal with free radicals. Increasing the oxygen content of the atmosphere would actually decrease the life span of living things. Mars cannot support life because of so many reasons, its size and hence gravity is too small to retain oxygen and gaseous water. It surface cannot hold liquid water which is essential for life. its atmosphere is too thin and its surface temperature is too low. |
wola44: Hello House,Are you saying all you need to impeach a speaker of a 34 man house of assembly is 2/3 of 1/3 of a quorum? which is 2/3 (1/3*34). This works out to approximately 8 persons. so in effect you are telling me that 3 seperate groups of 11 members can all form a quorum to impeach the speaker. |
Idoma Likita: Save your advice for yourself! Mr Nwa-Afor!God bless you my brother, may God continue to fill the fountain from which you receive devine wisdom from. What most ethno-tribal bigots are oblivious of is that the average Nigerian is not desirous of seperation, it is the powerful ruling class from all tribes that uses the treats of seperation as a bargining tool to grab power. Have you heard of an igbo governors or politician advocating for separation while in office. it is after losing power that they often realize that igbos are marginalized. If Ralph Nwazurike is given givernorship position today he would develop anmesia on Biafra until he loses power. The average Nigerian villager loves Nigerians from other trtibes irrespective of tribe and religion, when I was schooling in Sokoto I would never forget the love shown by my hausa friends. When I was leaving one of them offered to give me one of his goat as a parting present. I had to refuse because I could not carry the goat into the plane. All the ethnic and religious conflicts are political manupulations by politicians to set the people apart and gain political revelance. Even the ijaw -itskekiri conflict is political, we have lived together for centuries and the average itsekiri still marry the average ijaw, but to gain political relevance the polititians creates conflicts to set the people apart. You think the average hausa, tivi, idoma, yoruba or even itsekiri villager care about oil or who becomes president, governors or zoning? he is more concerned about day to day survival. it is those that depends on political power or patronate that sees political power as a do or die affair. |
St_Ichimaro.Gin:I am full blooded Itsekiri from koko. The way the igbos make decisions and assumptions for others is annoying. They will tell you SS will do this, Middle belt will vote this, Southern Kaduna will support that, but they will not quote one leader from that group to support their assertions. |
IGBO-SON:My inlaw (igbos are my inlaw), What I want to see happen is a strong and united Nigeria where equity, justice and fairness prevail. This is because in todays world, size and strength is everything. Nigeria owes its influence today solely based on size, population and oil. Minorities like me can only be protected under a bigger political structure. If in the event Nigeria must split, then I would have to go with the sections that I feel can best protect my intetest. They will put their cards on the table and we will reach a mutual agreement on how my rights and priviledges would be protected. I know that minority rights are often infringed upon so much so that the UN has an organ for protecting their rights. Some of your people have started infringing that right already by forcing us into a SS/SE alliance without our consent. They make it seem as if we had already been conquered even before Nigeria splits. I have seen maps of biafra including my beloved warri, and I go "what the fvck" we will fight till the last blood defending warri against any forceful occupation. You need to be aware that minorities have a phobia for domination by majorities. The we honestly do not understand what your people mean by SS/SE alliance. is it a political alliance? is it a military alliance or even an economic alliance. maybe you people has an alliance with the Ijaws and GEJ and then extend it to cover the whole SS, but if you people want to ally with us, then let's discuss. |
Kingspin: Friend, read my lips SE/SS are more hungry to separate from the so called one Nigeria. Others may call for anything but the two want to be independent and ans a new country. It dnt start today thats what i mean by being at the front. Correct urself.Sorry to say, you need to spend money on more qualitative education. How you equate a national conference to seperation beats me. I honestly do not know when this SS/SE nonsense started. I am a core niger delta citizen from warri, and I am not aware of any SS/SE alliance. Then it smacks of mischief to say that SS are hungary to seperate from one nigeria. Please name the SS personalities or ethnic groups agitating for separation. it is your perogative to fight for seperation of your own people but it is criminal to drag others along with you without their consent. |
Kingspin: I'm from East, let every zone settle with what they found in their land period. What if the oil is there in the North. Maybe by now they would have departed from the rest. One Nigeria by foot. Allow us as a nation to discuss. Is just to agree in unionism. In theoy everybody should settle with what is found in their land, but in practice what is found in your land is only yours if you can defend it. The british came here to subdue us to take what was in our soil. The whites are in south africa, south and north america because of what was in their soil. The US are in kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq because of oil in their soil. If Nigeria should bulkanize today, the SS would be the battle ground for control of the oil resources involving first the other bigger tribes and sections including the igbos and international powers like the US, UK, France, China, Russia etc. |
Kingspin: It only the SS/SE that are in front in agitating for National conference or the sovereign the rest are still lazy due to oil. What is diffcult in discussing about the country in general to know outline the best way forward as a nation. Becos this foolish goats are enjoy the weath and power alone while others beg for power senseless and shameless mammals who can not offer ways to unity the country at peace. Up National confeb. Why are the North afraid of roundtable talk that would address the unbalance, injustice, etc in the face of claim Nigeria as a country. Peace to those who seek them and death to the ones that cant sincerely offer one.It is annoying when you lie, twist facts and upturn logic just to support GEJ. When GEJ says no to National Conferemce you are antagonistic of national conference now when GEJ calls for a National Conference others are now foolish for holding contrary views. You then come here and lie bare faced that it is only the SS/SE that are in the front in agitating for a National Conference. The people at the fore front of agitations for a National Conference are the SW, they have been agitating for since the time of IBB. infact they actually held one that involved all ethnic group in Nigeria and submitted the paper to the government. I can name 10 yorubas that are at the fore front of agitations for national conference, just name one SS or one igbo man that had agitated for a national conference. All the SS agitate for is resource control. I am from an oil producing community, but to call other non oil producing communities or states lazy is the height of delusion. I am sure you are not from an oil producing cvommunity but is enjoying the proceeds of oil. that also makes you lazy. I have always supported a national conference where the structute of the country and relationships between the constituent parts can be discussed and agreed upon, but it makes discussions impossible when you refer to others as lazy, shameless and senseless just because you have oil. |
