To be a woman in Africa must be depressing. A hard-working woman who paid her dues in Nollywood and later moved to qualify as a nurse in the US decided to celebrate her birthday by taking and sharing pics, and the best reaction above is hardly qualified to be termed positive. The default state of most people on this platform is to attack anything feminine that is not thier mothers. You guys need to understand that people put on whatever makes them feel confident/good about themselves. A lady's outfit isn't necessarily meant for the men. You can decide not to dress that way but that does not make you a better human being. |
WhizdomXX:The entire continent asking one man for apology is tantamount to acknowledging his importance and how much weight his words carry. I mean, if you said something like about Europe, would anyone ask you to apologize? I think it's better the man is ignored. |
stayclearofme:That's exactly how people on this platform generalize when it suits them. When a lady commits a crime, they'll all start calling out women. And yet the front page is full of threads about men committing crimes. Pathetic. |
TheRealOwner:We had many front page threads today about men killing or raping their own family members. And then you see one about girls stealing, and you feel the ideal reaction is to call out feminists? Laughable. |
Lord... The things we read on here! When we read this kind of news, everyone forgets about gender (except the OP who has taken it upon herself to be like the people I'm criticizing, lol). But if it was about a lady breaking up with a guy, the front page would be full of "fear women", "fear that gender", "Nigerian women are useless", etc. Instead of acknowledging the societal decay, men are allowing sexism to push them into condoning it. Please, let's launch a campaign against rape and sexual assaults in general. It is not a woman's thing. It affects all of us. #StopRapingYourWomen |
ThinkSmarter:Wow... why not just go ahead and say she deserved to die? Even in a thread where a man is the culprit and a woman the victim, you still found a way to call out the female gender? There's no limit to y'all's sexism on this platform. First, you don't know for sure if she's older. Second, even if she is, how is it a bad thing and how is an adult male like this not able to take his own decisions? Third, even if it's a bad thing, you didn't call out the entire male gender for the action of this single murderer but you found it convenient to call out women for the action of this single lady? Nigeria is where it is today cause you guys are more interested in dichotomies than progress. Shame. |
Why is no one saying "fear that gender"? ![]() |
igbesachick:You have something against the US and you have succeeded in making this US vs China discussion. While I'd like to have that chat, it is very important not to engage in a strawman argument. I am not arguing about the US/China relationship and who's right or wrong. I am saying that China does not have the socio-cultural structure to be the world leader. It is a closed system and the world will never look to them for leadership. Neither democratic systems nor other authoritarian systems will bend for that. China will be become richer and other countries will do business with them for that. But that's all about it. Military might will not work cause people need to willing follow thier lead and people won't do that cause they can't relate with them. |
igbesachick:Please, take a look at what you typed. You did not type "naturalized". It was probably a typo but you had in quotes giving the impression it was deliberate. One would think you'd look at your own text before attempting to insult the second party for not understanding. You might as well ask me who says the US is the world power. I don't need anyone to tell me China wants to lead the world. The reason we go to school to have enough knowledge to make these inferences. Even that's not the case, I simply posit that they are far away from becoming one. This is regardless of whatever their goal is. All your comparisons have been about Finance. China is rich and will continue to get richer from all indications. China is now considered richer than the US as a nation. My point to you is that alone doesn't make a nation the world power. I can't keep repeating myself. Read the other reply. I have nothing say about bots, foods, etc. cause don't see how any of these addresses any point I've raised so far. |
igbesachick:I am Canadian by birth. I live in Canada. I have lived in the US and I have been to the Middle East multiple times for work. I don't know much about Nigeria other than the fact that my parents are originally from Nigeria and I visit the country once in a decade. So I was not even making reference to Nigeria when I talked about freedom. If you live in the US for just a year and spend a week in China, you will not come back here to ask me what freedom I am referring to. Freedom of religion, freedom of speech/journalism, freedom of association, etc., are almost none existent. Heavy media censorship and news filtering is common. Heck, as a visitor, even the people of China see you as a stranger and have no issues making that obvious. Nevertheless, how thier leadership and lifestyle work today for them is not the point as it's not really my issue. The point is how this authoritarian system does not work in favour of thier end goal cause the world is not very likely to look up to a country they cannot relate with. Yes, being a world leader doesn't mean other countries will have to drop their system for yours, but you must have a model they can emulate to some extent. A model that gives you the moral authority to weigh in on other people's issues. The reason the US is so influential is because many countries strive to be like them. Adopting thier models in almost every sphere implies a change in the US ripples down. And this, in turn, puts the country in a position to decide the way forward. Now, how many citizens of most world countries would like to adopt the Chinese model? Even the Nigerians praising the country will be the first to protest if the catholics are formed to cut off from the Pope. I am not disputing China's economic success. I acknowledged it in the first comment you quoted. I'm saying that is not a system can make them a world power. |
igbesachick:When I say Asia is not like the EU with a common goal, I was trying to tell you not to count the rest of the continent when expressing Chinese influence in terms of numbers cause the desire to be the word leader is strictly a Chinese affair not a common goal shared by the continent. It was not disputing the unity of Asia's unity even though we both know it is not comparable to that of Europe. Countries in Europe are created according to culturally heritage (the same cultural heritage that makes China a huge country). It doesn't in any way signify lack of unity. You did not address the core of my argument. You went off comparing unity as if that's the bone of contention. The point here is that China as a country is a very closed system and that makes the rest of the world wary of them including those from the same continent. This has a negative impact on thier influence and will forever stand between them and their dream of becoming the world leader. It is not just a game of numbers. |
igbesachick:Lack of freedom has nothing to do nourishment or travelling restrictions. Freedom is about choices. Choosing your preferred religion, watching your preferred kind of movie, using your preferred websites, choosing your preferred leaders, freedom of speech/civil liberties, independent journalism, etc. The word leader is a model, a point of reference for others (see Kemi Olunoyo's response to Falana). And the absence of this freedom is not something the world is ready to adopt as a model at this phase of human civilization. So I wasn't particularly talking about the citizens of China today but China as a world leader tomorrow. |
igbesachick:Unfortunately, it's not that simple. I'm a Confucius student in North America. My Mandarin is not bad, but it doesn't make me any less a misfit in China. And let's not lump Asians and Chinese cause they're not like the EU with a common goal. Even the rest of Asia you pointed out still don't fit in to the homogeneous China. I don't know if you've been to the Middle East but one probably needs to be there to understand this. China doesn’t want to lead Asians, they want to lead the world and they know better than to adopt this "who cares" mindset. They can say "who cares" when striving to be the best economy cause economy is a game of numbers. But you simply cannot be the world leader by saying "who cares". It's a position that involves a psychological shift in addition to military might. You must get actively involved in other people's affairs. And people are rebellious creatures, difference is immediately perceived as something to be treated with keen caution. America is America because even though it's oceans away from some of us, we all can see a bit of ourselves there. We're not wary of them because the culture there is just a mixture of other people's cultures. People didn't just adapt to be "natrilzed" into America (I'm actually not sure what that means). The truth, the US also "natralized" into becoming a mini world. It's like natural world capital cause everyone has a stake there. The world just can't ignore what happens in the US. The US made a lot of sacrifices and took steps in all fronts to be here, China can't just get there with finance alone. |
Lol... China needs this grandstanding at this phase of their development. They need to show the world how far they've gone. America needed it at a point too. But now, the US has long gone beyond this phase. Ask any of your friends in Chinese higher institutions, they'd confirm most of the senior professors are from the UK/US. They pay these guys ridiculous salaries to 'syphon' knowledge from the West to the Middle East. The truth is, it's really working for them. China has the financial resources and they sure know how to convert those to virtually anything they need including knowledge, power, etc. But to be honest, I don't think China is ready for the world power position just yet. Asides the fact that thier leadership style might not sit well with that position, China has a very closed culture. Unlike the US, Canada, UK, etc, you immediately standout the moment you land in China. I'm not just talking about looks. I'm talking about your inability to fit in as a person. You're likely going to have a hard time seeing your country's restaurant or your church or some tv series you were previously enjoying or some websites you initially had access to, etc. You can't become a citizen if you're not related to a citizen. The West welcomes you, encourages you to come with thier culture and then they assimilate it and make it thier own. There's fragment of everyone's culture in the US and that puts them in an "omniscient position". It has its disadvantages, but that's the sacrifice standing between China and thier goal. Again, thier leadership style might be working against them. Everyone likes freedom. Even Nigerians that frown against equality when it doesn't favour them still run these countries that protect people's rights/freedom. |
Lol... I wish this lady would just stop making this case more difficult. Meanwhile, Nigerians always make reference to the the US when arguing SOP's. ![]() |
It's good to acknowledge those who help you in life. |
Well penned down. I don't really know why he termed Osibanjo becoming the president "the law of natural progression" when the position of the vice president is neither a perquisite to nor an assurance of becoming the next president. I guess only time can answer his question. OP, it's a good practice to put the name of the writer at the beginning of the text. Thanks for sharing. ![]() |
itsme01:The lady has more attention than she'd need in a lifetime. You seem so sure about the communications between her and the organization. Why not share the theme that this picture violates, let's see? Except they were hoping to see an African lady with braided hair and broken lips, I believe this is a decent picture of a black woman. If it were about themes, they'd have pointed that out and not term it too glamorous. |
They wanted a certain version of her they had in their minds, the booky Ngozi Adiche. Lol. |
NGArmyTerrorist:Ok. Sir. I don't think he was trolling though. He was probably trying to hail the guy. |
Odidigboigbo:Yes. But unfortunately, the bride price alone is hardly admissible in court in the absence legal papers, right? If you want to travel with your wife, you can't bring bride price receipt to the embassy as POM (proof of marriage). You may not even be able to use the word "spouse" in your legal documents (e.g. will) without explicitly mentioning her name. Otherwise, it might be contestable. |
NGArmyTerrorist:Lol... don't be mean to those learning your language. |
I love this woman! ![]() |

Lol... So thousands of people can wake up one morning in Nigeria to realize they're all single again after years of marriage? It's like everyone's is just playing in that country. |
Power5000:She never claimed to be an investigator neither did sha take any matter into her hands. She only advised her followers to concentrate on clamoring for justice instead of focusing on Kemi which I think is the sensible thing to do. It's surprising how you left the Kemi lady who's actually the one claiming to be an investigator and who's been dishing out unverifiable claims to attack Tonto who did nothing other than drop her opinion just as you and I are currently doing. Please, don't let your dislike for an individual becloud your sense of judgment. |
Rhado:No, I am not wrong, dear brother. You went on to tell me how Trump assisted Isreal as an individual. In as much as I'd like to point out that he did all he did using the office of the president which is now occupied by a different person, the truth is, I'm not even disputing Trump's involvement as an individual. I'm saying the move made by Benjamin was in the best interest of Isreal. In fact, he made the move specifically because he was obviously close to Trump. Quickly congratulating the new president was Benjamin's way of reassuring the US that his relationship with Trump had no bearing on the US/Isreal relationship. That is what any sensible leader would do. Any delay would have been interpreted as reluctance and would have cast a shadow of doubt on Isreal's loyalty. It was a well thought out diplomatic move which he specifically made cause he was close to the outgoing president and the new administration was watching for the slightest sign of rebellion from all world leaders known to be close to Trump in order to determine how to relate with them going forward. If he'd waited to be the last to congratulate Trump, that would have sent a loud message to Biden's administration regarding where his loyalty lies. And believe it or not, that wouldn't be good for Isreal. I'd expect an ex-president to know this but it's just typical of Trump to make everything about himself. Best wishes in your endeavours too! |
Awesome! This one went well! |
Hehe... Trump and his Nairaland team. ![]() Would it have been better if he had congratulated him later? The relationship between the US and Isreal goes beyond whatever Trump had with Netanyahu. The office of the Prime Minister of Israel congratulated the Joe Biden, and that a typical move expected of an ally. America stands by Isreal, not Trump. The ex President's tendency to make everything about himself was one of the issues that marred his tenure as it made it hard for him to keep working with some people who initially stood by him. |
bluecircle470:Wow... Why can't you submit your own argument instead of resorting to name calling without making any point? |
FuckDModz:Even in a thread like this where kids are being discussed, you still want to bring in sexism? You guys are just incorrigible. |
MaverickA3:I'm Québécois and that means I grew up speaking French. I am, therefore, not really in a position to give you any study guide. However, I know someone who can help. His name is etrange and he's the Nairaland resident French professor and TEF master. @etrange Is there anything you can do for this gentleman, please? I figured you've been very busy lately as you hardly make comments these days, but I just thought I should ask seeing how you guided others in your TEF thread. ![]() |
