Nicely put! Ondo is famous for the marugbo soup, which isn't commonly eaten elsewhere. I like okro, especially when diced. If you like okro, then you might enjoy obe onla, the sister to okro soup. I don't know if you've had it before.

Some vegetables like ugwu and uziza are commonly used in cooking in the West. Ugwu with egusi is the best combo for me.

Actually, I'm not arguing with you. We don't always have to argue. This thread is about food, so let's dialogue.

The ewedu and gbegiri thing is really an optional thing among Yoruba people. I, like many others think it's a very putrid combo, others don't seem to mind it. While I like ewedu and gbegiri seperately, I don't like it combined.

Honestly, efo riro is quite universal, the Ekitis are just known for their efo riro and pounded yam combo. Efo riro is not just one dish. The most common type is efo tete and efo shoko, but there are others like efo amunutu, efo yanrin, efo patako, efo ewuro (bitterleaf), and efo efirin. Efo efirin is very aromatic and it's juice or leaves can be used in a type of regional pepper soup in the west.

I haven't seen okro and isapa combo, but interestingly enough, despite the differences, they both belong to the mallow family.
Very insightful. Yoruba folks indeed have a lot of nutricious soups from what you've listed here. 7 types of efo riro soups alone! And there are others soups as well. It's unkind that some simpletons and ethnic bigots taunt Yorubas as lacking soups, when in reality this is FALSE.

This could also be replicated in the NL food section by posting a long list of all the available Yoruba soups, then getting the Mods to push it to the NL frontpage for educational purposes.

A nice counterattack... Nice thread.

Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, Houston... Those top places easily fit into the areas discerning folks have to beware of in terms of homicides.

But in reality, the cumulative number of folks of Nigerian descent that have passed on from vicious shootings or knife attacks (since over 20 years ago either in the U.S. or UK) has been on the upswing.

Planting in sacks is organic farming right?
Organic farming (also known as ecological farming or biological farming), is an agricultural system that uses fertilizers of organic origin such as compost manure, green manure, and bone meal and places emphasis on techniques such as crop rotation and companion planting.
So, sacks, clay pots, old tyres, green houses, leased lands, and more can be used for planting.

Regarding 500K as monthly income, it depends on the industry and role one is employed at. The reality is: the industries that can afford such a salary is few compared to developed countries, especially in Anglo-Saxon countries. That is what we tend to forget. Also, such a salary is only available in Lagos, Abuja, Port-harcourt and maybe, just maybe, Kano. Outside those places, salaries are very low and depressing for the residents. Yes, the living costs are also low, but most times, there are very few "good paying" jobs by Nigerian standards available in those places. Statistics say most Nigerians work in the agricultural sector, which is largely subsistent. What I want to know is how that is between southern Nigerian and northern Nigeria.

To be on the fair side, I don't like converting naira earnings to dollars as living costs differ. In Japan, a salary of Y10 million/$100K per annum is classified as very good, but entry level in the US. However, there are diverse industries which pay such in Japan compared to Nigeria.

One of the issues I have regarding discourse about Nigeria is the lack of accurate and well-researched data to support certain claims we see around. The Lagos state government, National Bureau of Statistics and McKinsey do well enough to compile these data. Still, I would love to see more publicised and the methodologies used.

As for running water, I think we would have to define these amenities using Nigerian standards, most of which might not align with global standards. But for relatable sake, the standards should be Nigerianised. If you ask whether running water is available, the next question will be: is it clean? Is it privately financed or from a public authority? With that, one has erased half of homes with running water in Nigeria.

It is an appropriate question considering Nigeria is a big country by landmass compared to Japan, Singapore, Taiwan or Hong Kong. As outlined above, we would have to define "new" using Nigerian standards. If a new car is, say 2010>, one can say very few Nigerians above that age own such, let alone a new one. The age also has to be increased because most people in that age range are still with their parents, and because of cultural reasons, many might not buy a car. So, make it 30> or better still 35>.

While using dollars makes it understandable for a global audience, we have to consider the living costs in Nigeria and standards. Anyone earn those figures is in the upper middle class. I agree that the numbers are so tiny compared to the general population. I think this report do a good justice: https://businessday.ng/business-economy/article/nigerias-dollar-millionaire-club-shrinks-30-in-a-decade/

Blockbuster: Movie Centered On Fake News "When Wolves Cry" To Hit Cinema

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozwC4O1dF9s?si=Gu0wpTKxzP0d-MVs

A home movie with the title, "When Wolves Cry" which centres on the dangers of fake news is about to hit the cinema as producers are at the tail end of the post production process.

Produced and Directed by Emmanuel Eyaba, an Abuja based filmmaker and Media consultant, the movie talks about a certain actor who rose to fame on the crest of fake news as a blogger friend of his published how the actor was a gay, in order just to have him trend despite not being a gay.

This got him a mouth-watering contract in South Africa, a contract that was short lived when the bubble bust.

A diplomatic row erupted between Nigeria and Cameroon, as the actor was accused to have raped a camerounian.

He was however eventually arrested, tried and jailed for his series of controversial activities that almost set the country on fire.

In the cast list are, Syndy Emade, Francis Duru, MC Mbakara, Sydney Diala, Steve Eboh, Pauline Idemudia, Alex Nwankwo, Dwayne Eyaba, Tracy Gwazoo, Happy Jullian, Agility Onourah and more.

Fake news usually circulated through the social media has caused individuals and businesses serious character and brand damage.

There has equally been cases where people took their lives as a result of frustrations arising from fake news.

Regulating social media has been one of the difficult policies across the world and Nigeria inclusive.

When it was first mulled by National Assembly, it was seen as an effort to gag citizens from their right to information and free speech.

bbemmanuell:
HOW TO INITIATE A STORAGE BUSINESS IN NIGERIA
Engaging in farm produce storage business is an economical means of potentially earning substantial profits within a year. The process involves acquiring farm produce during periods of surplus and waiting for a scarcity to arise, subsequently selling the produce at a profit. Certain agricultural goods appreciate in value over time due to market shortages and increased consumer demand. While food is typically abundant during harvest, it quickly diminishes in availability. Some farmers lack the means to preserve their crops, while others are compelled to sell their produce immediately due to pressing financial needs. This situation presents an attractive opportunity for agricultural investors. Farm produce storage business can be exceptionally lucrative, with the potential for returns on investment exceeding 100%.
Over the past five years, farm produce prices have consistently risen, often appreciating between 50% and 100% from local farm gate prices to both local and international markets. This trend offers a promising opportunity for potential investors in the agricultural value chain, which includes seed companies, farmers, middlemen (market traders), processors, distributors, retailers, and consumers. While all segments of this chain can yield profits, market traders, distributors, and processors tend to make the highest margins, with market traders having significant influence over pricing.
Surprisingly, those involved in farm produce storage business often end up earning more profits than actual farmers. This venture proves to be a more attractive option than traditional bank investments, as banks rarely offer returns of 50% within six months.

BUYING AND SELLING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE IN NIGERIA
Agricultural storage business entails purchasing commodities at lower prices, either directly from farmers or wholesalers, storing them, and selling when the market experiences scarcity or a significant price increase. Most farm produce is abundant during harvest and becomes scarce within a few weeks.

TYPES OF FARM PRODUCE FOR STORAGE
There are numerous farm produce items suitable for storage, including melon, soybeans, sorghum, beans, maize, millet, ogbono, bambara nut (okpa), sesame seeds, groundnut, palm oil, cashew, ginger, dry pepper, and shear nut. These can be categorized as follows:
1. Mainly for Export: Sesame, ginger, cashew.
2. Feed Mill Sector: Soybeans, maize, sorghum, guinea corn, millet.
3. Commodity for Retailers/Consumers: Beans, melon, pepper.

BEST TIME FOR PURCHASING FARM PRODUCE (ENTRY POINT)
• November to December: Bambara nuts (okpa), beans, sesame, sorghum, soybeans.
• October to December: Pepper.
• September to November: Maize.
• August to September: Melon.

BEAN STORAGE BUSINESS
Cowpea, also known as beans, comes in various varieties with differing protein content and pricing. The type and quality of the seeds, as well as market demand, influence the price. Nigeria primarily produces white and brown beans, with white beans mostly grown in the northern regions. Effective preservation is essential in bean storage to prevent a drop in value. During the harvest season, a bag of beans can be purchased for N20,000 and sold for over N40,000 during off-season. Proper storage methods include sealing beans in drums kept in a garage or under a well-ventilated area. Some investors use chemicals with expiration dates, waiting for the chemicals to expire before selling the beans.

WHERE TO BUY BEANS
Brown beans are readily available in Adamawa (Mubi) and Taraba. Beans can also be purchased from Kaduna, Nasarawa, Niger, Yobe, Bauchi, and Kano States. However, the use of chemicals in preservation has raised concerns about potential health risks from residual chemicals in the produce.

MAIZE STORAGE BUSINESS
Maize is another profitable farm produce suitable for storage and later sale. Maize can be processed into various products such as pap, agidi, corn flour, and more. Proper drying is crucial to prevent mold growth and maintain quality. Maize that is not adequately dried can turn black due to the activity of Aspergillus fungus, which produces a harmful liver carcinogen.

SESAME SEEDS STORAGE
Sesame seeds, known as Beni seeds, are globally used for pastries, bread, and hamburger toppings. Sesame oil, rich in antioxidants, is used in cooking and massage therapy and is highly valued in the pharmaceutical industry. While less common in local markets due to its status as a major export commodity, sesame seeds can be purchased for as low as N18,000 and sold for as high as N70,000. Purchasing prices are often set by sesame seed agro commodity agents, with availability in the North Central states.

MELON STORAGE BUSINESS
Melon storage is another lucrative venture, with commercial production in Nassarawa and Niger States. Properly dried melon can last until the next planting season while maintaining its shelf life. A bag of melon purchased for N30,000 during abundance can be sold for as much as N60,000 or more during scarcity.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS
It's crucial to understand when to store specific farm produce, typically during the surplus when supply exceeds demand. Equally important is knowing when to sell your stored goods, ideally within four to six months from the harvest date to maximize profits. Waiting too long to sell can result in missed opportunities, as demand may decrease. Avoid being overly greedy, as market dynamics can change unexpectedly.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER FARM PRODUCE STORAGE BUSINESS
Anyone with an interest in farm produce storage business can successfully engage in it, provided they have the necessary capital. This business does not require constant attention; instead, you buy in bulk during surplus periods and sell during scarcity. Individuals living abroad seeking profitable investments can also benefit from this business, as they can determine when to sell their stored goods. Retirees looking to remain active and financially stable can consider this venture as an alternative to idle retirement.

PROFIT POTENTIAL IN FARM PRODUCE STORAGE BUSINESS
Farm produce storage business is highly profitable. For example, purchasing a bag of farm produce for N30,000 and selling it for N60,000 could result in a profit of N30,000 per bag. Even after accounting for expenses such as transportation, warehousing, security, and miscellaneous costs, substantial profits can be realized. Profits increase with the quantity of produce purchased. Retailing these goods can yield even higher returns.

HOW TO PROPERLY STORE FARM PRODUCES
Store farm produces in airtight containers like drums and jerricans with secure lids, ensuring they are kept in well-ventilated areas or rooms. Preventing oxygen exposure is crucial for safe storage.
CONCLUSION
Farm produce storage business is an encouraged practice, as it prevents food waste and ensures consistent food availability throughout the year. Given Nigeria's growing population, storing produce for the future is essential, making farm produce storage a valuable and encouraged business opportunity. Buyers do not necessarily need to travel to the states for purchases; reliable agricultural commodity agents can facilitate the process."

Indeed Sukkot... You captured everything from a bird's eye view. That name "south side" that's in nearly every major city in the U.S. can be an irritant just thinking about the fact that the U.S. establishment had a hand in it and some Blacks in the 'hoods are not helping matters by not fully embracing what the New Economy has to offer to change the narrative. There are towns or suburbs whose populations have dropped over the decades because of the gang wars, sexual assaults, murders, drugs, etc. Families have had to further move to some towns or cities they perceive are safer, thereby leading to the decay in the infrastructure of the suburbs they left behind.

Even Nigerian-Americans and Nigerian immigrants have lost their lives in crossfires or robberies in the U.S. while driving cabs or just stepping out of their cars like a brilliant Nigerian lady of Yoruba descent who was studying for her PhD and she got shot a few years ago by an AA guy who just simply walked up to her car and pulled the trigger at close range.

I was into vegetable oil production and power was the major headache for shutting down.
Presently,I have the cash but my absence in the business is taking a toll on it.

I am into farming and agro storage presently and so far, the agro storage looks promising with a better yield than the farming.

I just want to divest into something else pending when I have the time for my biz because I am not always around 8 months in a year.
Right, I'm back to reply you here. (I was reading and replying to some other posts). Doing business worldwide has not been very smooth for a lot of folks because of the rise in hyperinflation majorly triggered by COVID-19 and the Russian-Ukraine War. I've fully read your post 3 times and instantly recognized some useful ideas and solutions I can share with you!

First off, for the OMO, since it's only banks and discount houses that can purchase OMO bills from the CBN, it's better to visit the NL treasury bills thread to learn more about how to invest in government bills. It just has to do with walking into a bank and letting them know you want to purchase treasury bills.

=>https://www.nairaland.com/878880/treasury-bills-nigeria

Since you are gonna be away for months, it's indeed important to have non-bricks and mortar investments that will NOT take too much of your time or incure overhead costs or production costs. So, investments in the right kind of financial markets instruments is key.

Indeed, most Millionaires and Billionaires have up to "7" streams of income. So, it is good to diversity ones income from one source to many sources. It's like having a table with 4 legs. When you lose 1 of the 4 table legs, it becomes unstable. That's the way the loss of an income source can be minimized by having up to 7 OR more sources of income at the same time. The billionaires have many divisions within there group of companies that keep generating profit margins while solving problems for a large number of people.

Second, I must commend your doggedness in starting registered businesses in Nigeria with all the policy sommersaults and inflationary trends caused by local and international factors. The value addition and processing of vegetable oil is awesome because of the huge demand in countries with large populations. I don't know if it is the processing of soya oil, sesame oil, castor oil, coconut oil or palm oil your factory was into for the domestic or international market?

But since you said it was electricity issues you encountered (or was a challenge), then have you thought of installing off-grid power like hybrid wind/solar generator within your facility? I know you must have tried the use of LPG generator as well with the frenzy with which people purchased the new carburetors for conversion to gas generators.

There is a generator which uses hydrogen that I came across years back. The hydrogen gen simply extracts hydrogen from the air and uses it for powering the home and other facilities. You can do some Googling on the most affordable hydrogen gens that are available in Nigeria or abroad.

Last but not least, you can also check up mini-hydro generator technologies as well which uses flowing water to power communities. So, I have stated 3 methods of generating power here from my years of data mining and business research.

Let me stop here for now and I hope this info here helps you in further navigating the investment and business space.

All the best.

Wow!!! Very interesting. Thank you for sharing sir.

The Esans used to be strong political allies of the Yoruba, from the Pa Enahoro's time to Dr. Ambrose Folorunsho Alli etc. It's no longer so any more in my opinion.

You're right about many marriages between both, few of the most prominent are of the Ighodalos, Late Stella Obasanjo and Pa Olusegun Obasanjo etc.

There marriage used to be far more common than marriages of Yoruba to others.
I've always enjoyed your verifiable submissions here on NL, being a widely read person myself.

Indeed... Especially Yoruba men getting married to Esan women. Itsekiris, Urhobos and indeed the entire Edo and Delta States were and still are the primary epicenters of Yoruba inter-ethnic marriages due to the Old Western Region associations before the creation of the Mid West in 1963.

It's great your mentioned Ambrose Folorunsho Ali of the UPN who was the Governor of Bendel State (Now Edo and Delta States). I was going to mention Ambrose Ali's name in my first reply to you on this thread being that he is someone with Edo and Yoruba ancestries just like Asue Ighodalo) but I decided to not get too wordy. His mother's home town Idoani is in Ondo State along the border with Edo State. One of Oranmiyan's cousins who followed him to Benin from Ife (Ufe) later settled in Idoani when Oranmiyan finally left Benin to return to Ife and fully establish Oyo Kingdom.

Indeed, Bendel State majorly went with the UPN that was led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, because the UPN programs were populist in nature and people could see the impact until the Military came and overthrew Shagari and others.

The Action Group also did a lot in the areas of free education and development right up till the Mid West Region was created to enable further dynamic developments in that area.

All the best.

The reality is that Edo is not monolingual so there may be no furore if a candidate turns out to be like LP's Chinedu in Lagos who can't speak Yoruba in a monolingual Lagos and had to get an interpreter during campaign too.

Asue and his siblings were born and raised in Ibadan where their parents lived, stayed and worked. They are Omo Ibadan.

Their late mum was Yoruba while their late Dad was Esan. If they were females married to Yoruba men, they could even aspire to be the Governor of Oyo state. It's the names of the boys that affiliated and restricted them as Edo, aside that, they could pass for a Yoruba family and seen as such by their Yoruba kith and kin.

Their late mum, a Yoruba woman, was particularly phenomenal and popular as well as a role model to many people in Ibadan so much that her name was a household name in Ibadan those days. Their late Dad was a Senior Staffer at the University of Ibadan.Check my signature for free stuffs!

Indeed their father was Esan and the Esans migrated from Benin. Esan when translated means "those who fled or ran" as a result of some upheavals in Benin. Esans and Binis are ancestrally kinsmen.

I read a biography book over 10 years ago on the life and times of the Ighodalo patriarch and it was truly illuminating. ituah's mothers was a Princess from a royal family.

Many Esan-Edos are married to Yorubas as well.

am fine bro, thanks.
You raised a point about investing in OMO last week. Open money market.
Do you have deep knowledge about this sector? I am thinking of divesting into
Great!

Hello once again @emmaodet, I had to move the convo to this NL business thread away from the NL sports thread.

Yes to your questions, I'm not an investor in the OMO (Open Money Market) but I did ask someone last week about (he posted on a travel section thread months back about the fact that you had closed down one of your factories) what niche or line of agribusiness your factory was into.

I too have been using NL and other resources to look at more areas of investments that have a high rate of sustainability.

This thread from 2019 that I'm typing on is one of them. You can go through it and see if you can get some legit business ideas.

On the other hand, if overhead costs in physical businesses are way too high with small profit margins (even after trying to reduce costs of production), then it is better to just be an investor in the financial markets and money markets.

I'll share some more info with you based on what your feedback to my post here is.

Cheers.
