I am at a loss at some of the comments I've read about Yekinni since he died. I do not see anything spectacularly heroic in playing for Nigeria. Consider that these players do not play for Nigeria for free. In their playing days, they travel at government expense, are fed at government expense and are paid match bonuses in foreign currency. They enjoy the spotlight and mingle with the high and mighty within and outside our shores. This is aside from the huge money they make from playing for their respective clubs. So where is the patriotism - for doing a job for which they get paid? What about Teachers, doctors, road sweepers etc? Are they less patriotic? Are they not national heroes? I think we need to realize that every Nigerian contributes to the development of the country and so no group should be treated as if they contribute more to the nation. While Yekini was playing for Nigeria, some guys were taking care of the National Stadium. Some others were driving the team to and from training. Some saw to the welfare of the players in other ways. Some were busy as supporters. All these are patriots. So how come we do not celebrate these ones when they die. I do not understand why donations should be made in government name to the family of a deceased footballer while retired teachers have not been paid their pensions for months! Footballers and other stars should learn to manage their finances and lives properly so they can leave worthy legacies for their children and family instead of waiting for government to do it for them. Some times ago, it was in the news that Mikel Obi was earning 40000 pounds (10 million Naira) weekly. How can he come back in 10 years tome after earning billions of Naira to expect government to spend taxes paid by poor pepper sellers and drivers to cater for him? Remember there are some graduate workers who will never handle Mikel Obi's weekly wage in 10 years! I for one do not pray that my family appeal to government to care for my children and family after my death! Let's leave the government out of our personal lives. Let government concentrate on public affairs of building roads, hospitals, schools and providing security. I rest my case. |
Very safe. I've been using internet banking with three banks since 2006 and I've had no issues. Go for it and follow all the advice in previous posts. |
A clear evidence that our government does not value the lives of her citizens. Can this happen to an American or British Team? I'm sure Obama or Cameron would have ordered their immediate evacuation by all means. Let's just pray that the players return home in peace. And some people will admonish that we be ready to die for this nation! A nation that offers its citizens no protection within and outside its borders! |

Order what you want directly from amazon.com. There are Nigerian companies who will help you. Try OandOgadgets.com or circuitatlantic.com. I've used both companies in the past and I can say they are good. Just that OandO are a little cheaper. |
Yeah. The soldiers grouse is that the Government is not showing enough commitment to fighting terrorists in the North of that country. I hope Nigeria's case will not get to this point. |
Mutinying soldiers in African country of Mali take over state television, announce that they have seized control of government President Amadou Toumani Toure is in hiding BAMAKO, Mali - Soldiers stormed state television and announced early Thursday that they had seized control of the country, dissolving all of its institutions due to the nation's mishandling of an insurgency in the north. On national television, a group of about 20 soldiers were shown in fatigues crowding around a desk facing the camera. They introduced themselves as the National Committee for the Reestablishment of Democracy and the Restoration of the State, or CNRDR. "The CNRDR representing all the elements of the armed forces, defensive forces and security forces has decided to assume its responsibilities and end the incompetent and disavowed regime of (President) Amadou Toumani Toure," said their spokesman reading from a statement. "All the institutions of the republic are dissolved until further notice. ... The objective of the CNRDR does not in any way aim to confiscate power, and we solemnly swear to return power to a democratically elected president as soon as national unity and territorial integrity are established." The sound of gunfire could be heard from the direction of the presidential palace. A soldier at the palace who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press said that the president's bodyguards had failed to defend the seat of government against the renegade soldiers, who burst in. They searched the grounds but could not find Toure, the country's democratically elected leader who was due to step down at the end of his term next month. The series of events that culminated in the coup began on Wednesday morning at a military camp in the capital, during a visit by Defense Minister Gen. Sadio Gassama. In his speech to the troops, the minister failed to address the grievances of the rank-and-file soldiers, who are angry over what they say is the government's mismanagement of a rebellion in the north by Tuareg separatists. The rebellion has claimed the lives of numerous soldiers, and those sent to fight are not given sufficient supplies, including arms or food. Their widows have not received compensation. Recruits started firing into the air Wednesday, and they stoned the general's car as it raced away. By afternoon, soldiers had surrounded the state television station in central Bamako, yanking both the television and radio signals off the air for more than 7 hours. By Wednesday evening, troops had started rioting at a military garrison located in the northern town of Gao, some 2,000 miles away. A freelance journalist from Sweden who was driving to her hotel near the TV station at around 4 p.m. local time on Wednesday, said that trucks full of soldiers had surrounded the state broadcaster. "We saw a couple of trucks, with military on them. They came and started setting up checkpoints. There were military in the streets, stopping people," said Katarina Hoije. "When we reached our hotel which is just in front of the TV station, there were lots of military outside, and more cars kept arriving - pickup trucks with soldiers on them." She said that they set up two machine guns facing the building. In Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said: "The situation is currently unclear and unfolding quickly," she said. "There are reports of military forces surrounding the presidential palace and movement of vehicles between the palace and the military barracks." The Tuareg uprising that began in mid-January is being fueled by arms leftover from the civil war in neighboring Libya. Tens of thousands of people have fled the north, and refugees have spilled over into four of the countries neighboring Mali due to the uprising. The government has not disclosed how many soldiers have been killed, but the toll has been significant. In February, military widows led a protest. In an attempt to diffuse tension, the Malian president allowed himself to be filmed meeting the widows, who publicly grilled him on his handling of the rebellion. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/mutinying-soldiers-african-country-mali-state-television-announce-seized-control-government-article-1.1048758#ixzz1pqoMis4K |
Lagos State government should mind their own business. When a parent takes his child to a private school, a contract is entered into between the parent and the owners of the private school. Since no parent is forced into such contract or forced to reamin in the contract, I do not see how it becomes the concern of Government. The issue of 3rd term fees for students in examination classes is not as simple as government is making it. Most parents do not want to pay 3rd term fees for JSS 3 and SS3 students because most of the term is spent on writing the final examinations. On the other hand, examination bodies say the schools must not prevent debtor students from writing their examinations. In all these, no one considers that Government does not give running grants to these schools. Teachers are employed and paid based on the number of students in a school and when two whole classes fail to pay a term's fees how are the schools expected to pay their workers? Or are the schools not to pay their workers during 3rd term? Perhaps they should pay their workers half salary? It is for this reason that most schools have devised a means of collecting the contentious 3rd term fees: Most schools charge 50% of 1st term fees along with first term fees and the balance is charged with 2nd term fees. So it is not a question of private schools sourcing for funds. Government as regulators of private schools should not be biased when parents complain to them about any thing they consider unethical in the private schools. Government should tell the whole world how they will assist private schools to recover unpaid fees in the event that the students refuse to pay. And before anyone says the schools should simply wait for results to be released and they should not release such to affected students, we must realize that candidates no longer have to depend on schools for their results. The results are often displayed on the internet for all to see. |

Did you people bother to read the body of the first post? The government ordered for all students (100,000). In fact it ordered for 5000 extra. Of course it is impossible for the governor to hand over all the laptops physically so a select group of students will attend the presentation ceremonies while others will be presented with theirs by their school authorities. I however share the view of others that provision of laptops may not be the immediate needs of these students. Government should have invested in well equipped computer labs with adequate powers supply. |

There will be no crisis. University education is not a must. University education can not be free. Those who want it must be willing to pay for it. There is nothing wrong with EKSU as a name. It's just an acronym. We Ekiti indigenes love the name. I support realistic governors like Fayemi. No point deceiving the people with substandard education. Free education should be limited to pre-primary, primary and Junior Secondary Schools. |
I was in Form Four when this great and pragmatic leader was assassinated. To us in Kwara, it was double tragedy because our very efficient State Governor, Col. Taiwo was abducted and killed too. I remember that day, no classes were held and our teachers had a hectic time getting us to go for lunch. Many of us wept profusely for this men because we saw them as real patriots. Murtala took over the reins of government at a time when the previous government was power drunk and careless about the governance of the nation. His government literally hit the ground running. From day one, he was out to positively affect the lives of Nigerians. He did away with all the paraphernalia of office such as outriders. He visited the markets and spoke to ordinary market women. He wanted to feel what the ordinary Nigerians felt. He shunned flamboyancy in all its forms. He took decisions promptly and did not care whose ox was gored. He declared his assets and returned blocks of flats to the Federal Government because according to him, he could not account for them within his military pay. He was a true leader. Am I saying he was perfect? No, but he tried to be. Unfortunately, these policies pitted him against enemies not only within but from outside Nigeria. He single-handedly ensured Angola was granted independence by recognizing the MPLA as the sole representative of the Angolan people at the independence talks and when Britain was trying to block the resolution, he nationalized British Petroleum and pronto, Britain backed down. But from then he was a marked man by the M16 and CIA. Adieu Gen. Murtala Mohammed. |

What will you do if you were this teacher? |
Read the story below and honestly say what you would have done if this had happened to you: Indian teacher stunned by $10bln bank balance An Indian high school teacher, with a monthly salary of around $700, was astounded when a routine online check of his bank account showed a balance of almost $10 billion. Parijat Saha, from the town of Balurghat in West Bengal state, said he had checked his State Bank of India account online last Sunday to confirm reception of a 10,000 rupee ($200) interest payment. "Instead I saw this astronomical amount," he told AFP by telephone. The account showed a balance of 496 billion rupees. Source: http://news.yahoo.com/indian-teacher-stunned-10bln-bank-balance-070324557.html After recovering from the initial shock at becoming an overnight billionaire -- at least on paper -- Saha, 42, said he immediately called a friend he knew at the bank to point out what was obviously a major accounting error. The State Bank of India said it was not immediately clear how the amount came to be registered in Saha's account. "We are trying to ascertain what went wrong," said local branch manager Subhashish Karmakar. "We have informed our regional headquarters in Kolkata and national headquarters in Mumbai," he |

irohadis:Unfortunately you are wrong. I do not work for OandO. Check my other posts on nairaland. That should give you a clue to what I do for a living. If you do not believe me, source for an item on either ebay or Amazon. Ask for quote from both companies. Make the result known here. I've bought three items from circuitatlantic and I've ordered 3 items from OandO. The following are advantages that I saw that OandO has over circuitatlantic a. OandO will advise you of another site where you can source your item at a cheaper price than you saw it on a website. For instance if you see a laptop on ebay and wish to buy it at $100, OandO will notify you if they find the same item at $85 on amazon.com. Circuit does not do this. b. OandO asks you to pay just 50% of total cost (cost of purchase +shipping) You pay the balance when your item is delivered to you. Circuit collects total money upfront c. OandO does not charge you separately for home delivery. Circuit does and the minimum charge within Lagos is N4000. d. Circuit adds so many other charges to the cost of the item. This invariably pushes up the total amount you pay for your item. OandO does not do this, hence you have the item at a fairly cheap price. If you doubt any of these things, place an order with both companies. |
Of course Nigerian will cry over the death of a good leader. I remembered Feb 13, 1976 when Late Gen. Murtala Mohammed was assassinated. I was in Form four in secondary school then. All the over 1000 students in my school and teachers cried. Our teachers had to plead with us to eat our dinner after we stayed away from lunch. And it was not just in Oro, Kwara State where I schooled, it happened all over Nigeria. He was tru;y loved and mourned by Nigerians. |
