The show and the book have two different Night kings.

The Night king on the show was created by the children of the forest while the Night's king in the books was a Stark who was a Lord Commander and fell for an "other"

The show's night king is loosely based on the books' night king.

If you recall the scene in the Dragonglass cave, Jon Snow saying to Daenerys Targaryen that the Children of the Forest & the First Men fought together to defeat a common enemy, the White Walkers. I think S7 E04

But there’s the part in S6 E05, where Bran saw the Children of the Forest creating the first White Walker, the Night King.
From their convo, Leaf said they were at war with Men who were destroying their sacred trees. And so they created the White Walker.

This is where I get confused. If Leaf said they created the White Walker to fight Men, how come the Children of the Forest fought together with the First Men against a common enemy, Night King?

But this was before the Children made a pact with the First men to coexist so maybe something they created to defend themselves from their former enemies had to be destroyed cause it was of no use to them anymore. And they sought the help of the First men as they had more advanced tech and weapons to destroy the Night king.

Or perharps the Night king grew too powerful and began raising an army of the dead against all of the living including the children of the forest. So their obvious choice was to unite against him

The show hasn't been too clear on what exactly led to the unity of the children and the First men.
From the books, the children didn't create the Night King.

I'm not sure the Children teamed up with the First men to fight the Wights.
If they did, it was probably because they blamed themselves for creating something so sinister that the cons outweighed the pros. They proably did it out of guilt.
