I think you are the one overthinking things here. This scenario can happen 100%, it happened so many times in the past, it has happened to her and it will still happen in the future. So many times, cars have crushed people using front wheels and the car's front generally, where the driver even has clearer views, than when reversing. What will you say goes wrong in those situations? The thousands of reason you will give apply to reversing, even worse.
If you are reversing and hit something, how long does it take you to stop? half a second, a second, two or three? Before you stop on alert, you must have crush the person, depending of how they fall. A car doe not stop the way you are making me to believe.
For me, this is an accident and it should be treated as such, just like they are treating it. Any conspiracy theories are the ones not adding up.
