The more patronage INNOSON gets the more forex we will lose to the importation of the engine blocks, axles and chassis that he will need to import to drive the vehicles not to talk of the OEM so he can meet the envisaged demand. Innoson used to buy engines from Japanese company Nissan.. But now they make the engines specifically for innoson.. They are in the process of setting up engine manufacturing plant in Nigeria... Second picture is Innoson head of media announcing..

You appear to miss the point here. The point is that engines, chassis and axles are not made in Nigeria because she lacks a virile steel and machine tools sector.Until engines and chassis are made in NIGERIA is when you can say vehicles are MADE in NIGERIA. Presently INNOSON is a motor Assembly plant and not manufacturing them. Those companies and vehicle brands you talk about have their engines made in the environment where their vehicles are manufactured largely to save costs and make their products competitive in a TATA environment. It is manufacturing and not assembling that reflects in GDP. It is about balance of trade. That is the point.

Using scarce forex to import CKD, OEM et al which does not guarantee competitive export won’t take Nigeria far in terms of the competitiveness of the cost price of the vehicle units when you attempt to export! All motion and no movement is what it translates to.

Oga, almost all the popular car brands in the world source various parts from third-parties. Those third-party parts manufacturers are called Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM).

Macoupolo of Brazil for instance makes body parts for Mercedes Benz of Germany. Toyota, Honda etc have different parts manufacturers scattered around the world which they assemble.

To you I may sound ignorant. However, it remains true that competitive vehicle manufacturing is made possible ONLY where the industry is located where the steel and machine tools sector are virile. In real vehicle manufacturing OEM are in the nature of peripherals such as electrical parts, entertainment items et al. You must manufacture the engine block and the body yourself to qualify as a vehicle manufacturer. Anything short of that is CKD and OEM based.
