Oh wait- trust sefago to leave the last for best:

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, 49, of the powerful Yoruba tribe, dedicated, teetotaling Prime Minister of the Western Region of Nigeria who began as a barrister, has gradually emerged as a statesman of integrity in a land where charges of corruption are the political order of the day. His fellow Prime Minister to the more populous but primitive north, the Sardauna of Sokoto, is a haughty Moslem nobleman out of another century. Nigeria's other regional Prime Minister, the demagogic, U.S.-educated Nnamdi ["Zik"] Azikiwe of the Ibo tribe to the east, lives under a cloud as a result of a financial scandal in his administration. So rent by divisions (250 tribes speaking 400 languages), Nigeria has a compromise federal Prime Minister, Abubakar Balewa, a northerner. "To many of us," says Awolowo, "Britain is our second home. We have thrown no stones, fired no shot, and we have not shed a drop of British blood. We are attaining independence by peaceful, orderly and democratic methods."

He ran again for the presidency twice, in 1979 and 1983, during a brief interlude of democracy between military governments. But although he ran strongly in his native region each time, he ended up throwing his support to rivals from the north.

Early in his career, Dr. Azikiwe seemed to realize that his Ibo group, the smallest of Nigeria's three major ethnic sub-divisions, could never rule the country outright. This insight led him to form alliances with northern politicians from the Muslim Hausa-Fulani ethnic constellation that would give him a far greater say in the country's affairs than he could have hoped for alone.

Throughout his life, Dr. Azikiwe's alliance with northerners put him at odds with Obafemi Awolowo, a socialist-inclined leader of the Yoruba, the country's other important southern group. In the view of Mr. Awolowo's supporters and many other Nigerians, Dr. Azikiwe's compact with the north opened the country to domination by the north and by the military, whose senior officer corps is dominated by people of Hausa and Fulani background.

Our founding fathers left a sand castle as legacy,a sand castle that has long crumbled because it was built solely on pure sand without a single cement and concrete.

Visionless, selfish, shallow and tribal projections are the theme of our constitutions and creeds.

olafolarin:

But it is the rabble-rousing Zik who may wind up running the show. Last year he journeyed north to the Sardauna's palace with a proposal to work together to defeat Awolowo. The Sardauna was happy to cooperate, for he bitterly hates Awolowo, who for years has urged that the powers of the northern emirs be reduced and is trying to split off the large non-Moslem "Middle Belt" from the Northern Region and make it a separate state. None of the three regions is likely to get the absolute majority needed to rule all Nigeria by itself, but a Northern-Eastern coalition could make Zik the first federal Prime Minister; the North's Sardauna appears to have his own eyes on the dignified post of Governor General.

Helicopters & Trinkets. Awolowo's
Action Group is fighting all out to beat this powerful combine. By far the best organized and disciplined party in the country, its slick politicking is worthy of the U.S. pressagents Awolowo has hired to steer his campaign. He and his aides sail through the back country in helicopters, festoon the towns with modern banners and posters, and hand out books of matches and other election trinkets by the thousands. Two TV stations—the first in black Africa—will carry Awolowo's campaign cries when they start operating early next month.

Awolowo styles himself a "liberal democrat" and favors uncompromising allegiance with the West in foreign policy. Zik swears he is not anti-West (his son is at Harvard), but insists that independent Nigeria should follow a neutral foreign policy, much like that of Kwame Nkrumah in nearby Ghana

Such sophisticated distinctions have little part in the campaigning—Awolowo and Zik prefer to denounce each other as oppressors of the people. It goes over much better.

I guess this article identifies the real reason why NCNC aligned with NPC and not the passed down from generation to generation fairy tale about Awo sending two teams to negotiate with the NPC and NCNC.
Re: Awolowo Had No Equal by SEFAGO(m): 9:13pm On Jun 03, 2010
As Premier of the Western Region in 1954, Chief Awolowo brought joy to the hearts of his people and hope to their eyes. He demonstrated visionary leadership by re-engineering the polity. His administration laboured tirelessly to revolutionise and to transform the socio-political landscape of the Western Region. The result was that the Western Region under the leadership of Awo was miles ahead of the other regions in terms of infrastructural development and in the provision of basic services.

Among Awo's landmark achievements were:

   * The introduction of free Universal Primary Education.
   * The establishment of (WNTV) which was the first television station in the whole continent of Africa.
   * The erection of such structures like the Liberty Stadium., which was also the first in West Africa.

He also built the 25-storey Cocoa House for farmers and the prestigious University of Ife now named after him.

Chief Awolowo the "primus interpares" or the first among equals, later relinquished the premiership of the Western Region to become the leader of opposition in the Federal Parliament. He was also one of the delegates to the 1953, 1954, 1957 and 1959 constitutional conferences that ushered in Nigeria's independence.

black person, not yoruba  grin

Awo eventually lost his bids for the presidency to President Shehu Shagari in 1979 and 1983 under suspicious circumstances. On May 9, 1987 the old-man quietly passed into eternity. But besides Oduduwa the founder of the Yoruba race, no other person rises taller than Awo in the Yoruba nation.

If nigeria must move on progressively as one,we must learn to think and draw out platforms for progress, not grorifying the hopeless past because of our primitive and tribal sentiments.

If there is anything to write home about our founding fathers, apart from getting independence from already weakened and disillusioned british empire, who were very glad to leave, why are we like sheep without out shepherds today, with no single sense of direction and purpose as a people?

Our notions of nation  building are destruction,corruption,victimization,tribalism,as-s licking, inferiority complex and backwardness.

In a country where majority are officially deluded, reasoning is out of the question and that is why we remain stagnant because we are not thinking. We are like helpless children relying on the failed past for our future.

The age of reasoning and innovations have been a thing of concern and interest among civilizations for thousands of years and yet,in the 21st century we can't even reason that it is proper to clean our streets, maintain basic amenities, talkless of scientific endeavours and progress.Stone age men.

All these self serving idiots from the west claiming that Awolowo -by picking Umeadi as his vice- demonstrated his spirit of fairness and cosmopolitanism, you guys gotta be kidding me! undecided What else did you expect him to do?

Have you ever seen a hunter go hunting without a gun? Or a farmer going to his farm without a hoe or some other farm equipment? Awolowo picked Umeadi for purely selfish reasons, he wanted to split the Igbo votes and in doing so win the elections. He knew he couldn't split northern votes, so he went for the Igbo. Unfortunately for him, he failed in his bid because NPP under Zik swept the East, NPN came second, no chance at all for the treacherous devil.

The chief question for you revisionists is this: Have the Yoruba ever voted for a non-Yoruba candidate in presidential elections since the carpet crossing incidence of the early 1950s?

Since Awo took over the West, which non-Yoruba has ever won in Yorubaland over a Yoruba son? Even in 2003 AD (the Yoruba party) did not field a candidate in the presidential elections because of Obasanjo the PDP candidate.

So, I reiterate that Awolowo sowed an evil seed which destroyed southern Nigeria. He did so in the 50s, 60s and 70s. He was an unrepentant tribalist. Great tribal leader.
