Sports / Who Rememebers This Debate? "This Team Can Be Better Than 94" - Keshi by Livermeka: 11:04am On Oct 14, 2013

This team can be better than 94 - Keshi
by Emeka Onwuka in Faro, Portugal 14 January 2013, 11:56

The last time Nigeria won the African Cup of Nations was back in 1994 and they also wowed the world at the World cup same year. The team's captain was Stephen Keshi and he is now in charge of the Super Eagles at South Africa 2013

In an exclusive chat with supersport.com at the team's Faro, Portugal camp Keshi believes that the potential in this team is good enough to match that of the country's last winners of the competition.

"Many Nigerians don't know how good this team is, I see great potentials in them and they can go places". He then added with a clear glint in his eyes that "In Emenike I see a player who can be like Rashidi Yekini and Godfrey Obaobona will grow in his position".

Stephen Keshi as a Player and captain of Nigeria played in 5 tournaments reaching the finals in 3 of them. These experiences should come in handy. "Maybe I might be able to help them handle the expectations. My playing will give me the insight in how to handle the younger players - those just starting out and making their way in the national team"

In the build-up to the camping and even during it Nigerians have been quite critical, as usual and in their views on the team and the squad make up. You wonder how Keshi handles the pressure of coaching a country where millions feel they can do a better job than the man employed for it. "I just make sure I concentrate on the players and make sure they understand and buy into what we want to do. Nigeria is a place that you can never satisfy every person so we just make sure we do our best".

However, it would appear that the team is better prepared unlike previous tournaments lately, and Keshi agrees "we have had no distractions. The NFF have been very supportive and we are just focused on the job at hand"

Since that famous 1994 victory, the team then lost on penalties to Cameroon in the 2000 finals at home, Nigeria has really not come close to winning the competition again. Is there pressure from within the group on the players to win this competition? "I would not put any pressure on my players; my duty is to make them relaxed but with high concentration levels so that they can carry out the tactical plans we have during matches."

As a player Keshi exhibited high levels of patriotism when it came to playing for Nigeria but he is aware that things have changed amongst the players who play for Nigeria. "I loved the attitude of the late Rashidi Yekini when it came to playing for Nigeria - he was always the first to arrive and was willing to do anything for the National team, I loved the man" "the current players are different and it is also the fault of the media who hype players to all levels because of what they do at their clubs when they have played probably 4 or 5 matches for Nigeria. You need to have played consistently for the national team for at least 5 years before you can be called a star".

The build-up to the camp was slightly over shadowed by the absences of the likes of Martins, Odemwegie in the original list. And then later, Shola Ameobi and Danny Shittu who were, pulled out for different reasons. It has not derailed his plans Keshi says. He however admits he dearly would have loved to have Shola Ameobi in there "He would have brought a lot of good things and experience because when he played with us in Miami for the friendly against Venezuela he was a brilliant influence on the pitch and in the dressing room; encouraging the players and saying a lot of the things I would have said and I was so impressed I let him continue. So this young side could have done with that".

Tactically, the Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi will play in his natural holding role for Nigeria but he would have license to move forward when he sees fit. The former Super Eagles captain and now coach of the team wants Nigerians "to be patient" with his team.

The players all seemed quite relaxed and a few of them were playing pool after dinner while club mates Moses and Mikel took turns to crack jokes with supersport.com on their way out.

Sports / Abuchi Obinwa Named In US U18 Squad by Livermeka: 7:59pm On Sep 19, 2013
Abuchi Obinwa named in US U18 squad

Teenage prodigy, Abuchi Obinwa has continued to make steady progress in his budding career as he was named in the U.S. U-18 Men’s National Team announced by Head Coach Javier Perez .

The US-born 16 years old Abuchi , born 1997 to Nigerian parents, is an imposing 6 footer who plays either in Central defence or as a holding midfielder for Chicago MagicPSG .

He has only just returned from a week’s training with the Real Madrid Academy in Spain last month and had previously turned out for the USMNT at U15, U16 and U17.

He will join the squad of 36 Players named as they will hold a week-long training camp at U.S. Soccer's National Training Center in Carson, Calif. U.S. U-18 MNT which will include an intrasquad scrimmage as well as games against local club teams.

What is interesting about this squad is how most of them have evolved together as all of the contingent of players Perez called up were born in 1996 and 1997, 33 of which have ties to U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy as current or former players.

It’s also noteworthy that, 25 of the players had already participated in the National Combine last month at Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.

It is the first training camp for the U-18 MNT since finishing in third place at the 2013 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. Perez will ultimately select an 18-player roster to travel from Oct. 6-14 to represent the U.S. at a four-team tournament in Limoges, France.

Sports / Bonfrere Jo Unimpressed With Eagles by Livermeka: 9:59pm On Sep 16, 2013
Bonfrere not impressed with Eagles
by Calvin Emeka Onwuka 16 September 2013, 14:29

Bonfere Jo, first arrived Nigeria as assistant to Clemens Westerhof and then later coached the team himself, getting the Gold medal with the Olympic team in Atlanta in 1996 and then four years later got to the Afcon 2000 final to Cameroon. He spoke exclusively to supersport.com's Calvin Emeka Onwuka at his village of Vise near the Dutch border town of Maastricht. He did not mince words nor pull punches on his views of the current team and the technical crew.

supersport.com: What do you make of the current team?

Bonfrere Jo: I think their play is too slow. I do not think the current coaching crew are honest and dedicated enough to improve the team to reach the level they should be at.

supersport.com: But they won the Afcon

Bonfrere Jo: You saw their first two matches, how badly they played. Something happened between that match and the Cote D'Ivoire match and all of a sudden they won. I have coached in China and even though one can not prove these things we know it happens..

supersport.com: You implying some underhand dealings?

Bonfrere Jo: look, it has happened many times and in football unfortunately it is very difficult to prove how but we know these things do happen. Even in their other matches after against Mali and the final against Burkina Faso they seemed to have improved suddenly. In any case, the team does not play in the way Nigerian players and teams have been known to play.

supersport.com: Do you not think that this group of players might not be on the same level as the ones you worked with?

Bonfrere Jo: Not like that. Nigerian footballers have natural technical ability, they have incredible athleticism and speed and they are brave. So what an honest coach just has to do is give them tactics and imbibe in them teamwork. That's it.

supersport.com: Stephen Keshi was your assistant in 2000, did you think he will get to become a successful coach?

Bonfrere Jo: He was a very good footballer. Really, really good. However, as an assistant at the time he was not clued up enough to know what to do exactly. So I had a few difficult times with him. However he seems to have improved on the job.

supersport.com: He is currently having a few issues with the NFF. Did they help or hinder you during your time?

Bonfrere Jo: for sure they never helped! They were a constant problem from the chairman to the sec-gen and even the sports minister at the times. Always making the job difficult and so they will be doing same for Keshi now thats for sure.

supersport.com: why do they do these things?

Bonfrere Jo: sometimes it is because they do not know what their duties are really. For instance, when I was there I ask them for friendly matches for the national team and they say to me "coach, you do it". So, I was the one sending faxes to countries in Europe for friendly matches which should not have been so when my job really is to coach the players.

supersport.com: what advice will you give to Keshi ?

Bonfrere Jo: He won't listen to me .

supersport.com: He might still get to read this anyway..

Bonfrere Jo: I will tell him to be honest with his players and himself in terms of who he selects. I have heard rumours and he should know that these things can affect the players and they will stop playing for him. Once the players do not trust the coach they will stop playing for him and the team suffers. Stephen Keshi must not only sit in Nigeria and make phone calls to invite players; he should get up and go to their clubs, see them in action and in training and so have a good feel of the players.

The truth is that if the team fails to qualify for the world cup he will be sacked and then all the years of work will be lost and the country starts again with a new coach. Therefore his focus must be on improving the team to qualify and then play at a higher level than what happened at the Confederations Cup.
supersport.com: You don't think they performed well enough in Brazil?

Bonfrere Jo: not at all. Very poor tactics and an over reliance on individual magic to save the team. That is the team's problems I had said from the beginning.

Sports / If Not For Ferguson... by Livermeka: 10:13pm On May 13, 2013
I have been waiting for this day for a long time because it was obvious that until Sir Alex retired Liverpool would struggle to win the Premier League. If not for Ferguson, Liverpool would have won the 2001 and 2009 titles.

I am sure many Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham fans will feel the way I do. When my colleague, Clyde, started tweeting about him, it didn’t take long for me to find my topic -“If not for Alex Ferguson”.

Don’t get me wrong there. I am a lifelong Liverpool fan and definitely not one to want to find anything good about Manchester United but you have to admit, Sir Alex Ferguson is the greatest football manager who ever lived.

He has been a colossus and an incredible one at that. If not for Ferguson, Liverpool would still have the most titles. In 2001, Liverpool won a unique treble, the Carling Cup, FA cup and Uefa Cup but Ferguson spoiled the party by leading United to another league title.

When you grow up like I did, supporting Liverpool, you learn to hate all things United. After all, they call themselves devils and annoyingly stole our red by being addressed as “Red Devils”. However, I admired Sir Alex for his work at Aberdeen where he led a team that included Willie Miller, Alex Mcleish and Gordon Strachan to win the European Cup Winners Cup. I loved Aberdeen because they wore red.

When he coached Scotland to the Mexico ‘86 World Cup, I hoped he would stay on. Then he joined United, so you can imagine my agony. Liverpool had 18 League titles when the Premier League started in ‘92. United had seven. We had four European Cup titles. United had one title they won in ‘68 and they never stopped talking about it.

Newcastle would have won the Premier League in the 1995/96 season, if not for Ferguson. That has to be one of the most outrageous title races and Newcastle led for so long, just like Liverpool in 2009, but Sir Alex, being the master of mind games, wound up Kevin Keegan and they imploded.

Newcastle fans would never forget 1995/96 and 1996/97 because, if not for Ferguson, their all-star team of David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Philippe Albert and Faustino Asprilla, coached by Kevin Keegan, would have won the Premier League.

Who will forget his many battles with Arsene Wenger? Arsene Wenger gave the best response to Ferguson’s attitude towards other managers.

“Ferguson does what he wants and you (the press) are all down at his feet. He doesn't interest me and doesn't matter to me at all. I will never answer to any provocation from him anymore," he said.

"He has lost all sense of reality. He is going out looking for a confrontation, then asking the person he is confronting to apologise."

That is what I will miss about Ferguson. His ability to confront referees, assistant referees and fourth officials and wind up opposing managers really made my day anytime United played. He was the grand master of mind games.

When Arsene Wenger achieved his second double in 2002, Sir Alex had this to say about Wenger. "He never comes for a drink with the opposing manager after matches. He's the only manager in the Premiership not to do so. It is a tradition here. It would be good for him to accept the tradition."

Let’s look at the top four positions in the table since the start of the Premier League and you will see that, when United won the title, Arsenal were either runners-up or third place.

If only Ferguson had retired 12 years ago, maybe Arsenal fans would not be complaining of going so long without a title.

Season Champions Runners-Up
1992/1993 Manchester United Aston Villa
1993/1994 Manchester United Blackburn Rovers
1994/1995 Blackburn Rovers Manchester United
1995/1996 Manchester United Newcastle United
1996/1997 Manchester United Newcastle United
1997/1998 Arsenal Manchester United
1998/1999 Manchester United Arsenal
1999/2000 Manchester United Arsenal
2000/2001 Manchester United Arsenal
2001/2002 Arsenal Liverpool
2002/2003 Manchester United Arsenal
2003/2004 Arsenal Chelsea
2004/2005 Chelsea Arsenal
2005/2006 Chelsea Manchester United
2006/2007 Manchester United Chelsea
2007/2008 Manchester United Chelsea
2008/2009 Manchester United Liverpool
2009/2010 Chelsea Manchester United
2010/2011 Manchester United Chelsea
2011/2012 Manchester City Manchester United
2012/2013 Manchester United TBD
I take my hat off to Sir Alex - the man, the legend and the enigma. He leaves United and they have 20 League titles and three European Cup/Champions League titles. Liverpool still have 18 League titles and five Euro titles - two more than United. That's my consolation.

If not for Ferguson, the Premier League would not be so dramatic. Sir Alex defined it for 21 years and, despite new advances in coaching and technology, always found a way to defy logic and remained competitive till the end.

The big question now is if Manchester United will still be dominant after Alex Ferguson?

What do you think?

Art, Graphics & Video / The Yoruba Man And The Door by Livermeka: 9:59pm On May 13, 2013
I found this hilarious post in a blog by a talented Nigerian artist and I have been really amazed by her ingenuity but I'm thinking of what to do with my old door

The Yoruba Man (MIXED MEDIA ON WOOD) Oil and Acrylic Painting.
Cleaning up a place or a storage is always a daunting rewarding task, and that was exactly how my cleaning exercise at my Garage turned Art Studio felt. When I had finished the uphill task of cleaning, clearing, repainting the walls all by myself., it indeed opened my eyes to the potential and possibilities, of some of the items I had earmarked as waste.

One such item was my old work surface, a Simple wooden door placed on a wooden cupboard, used basically for everything art. The wear and tear, could be felt each time it was in use. I finally got myself a new work surface and as I was about to pack it with the waste materials for the garbage disposal truck, it Struck me, that this door could actually be transformed into something special and here I was about to discard what could be of more value than it had been.

Indeed, that was a light bulb moment! I decided to turn this old door into a mixed media painting, using acrylic and oil paints on the already disused textured surface.

My subject a Yoruba Man. I felt a huge personal reward, when I finished this painting, one of inspiration and satisfaction, that I had done the right thing!.
BEHOLD THE OLD USED DOOR

VOILA -YORUBA MAN BY MIABO

Think again, what can you do with some of that junk? There is nothing you cannot find another use for. This object was originally a door, and for years became my work table when I placed it on an old cupboard in the Garage. It is now one of my most sought after paintings.
I grew up in Lagos, South-west Nigeria and despite it's cosmopolitan nature, remains the bastion of the Yoruba and the peculiar nature of their dressing leaves an indelible cultural mark that is distinguishable anywhere you find someone adorned with the attire, you knew immediately, it was a Yoruba man.

Sports / I Am Really A Good Guy - Odemwingie by Livermeka: 1:06pm On Feb 20, 2013

I am really a good guy - Odemwingie
20 Feb 2013 11:59:22
Sammy Wejinya

Controversial Nigerian attacker, Peter Odemwingie has taken the time to make a case for himself in the face of growing criticism directed at him.

The 31-year-old was overlooked by Nigeria coach, Stephen Keshi for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa for reasons many believed to be unrelated to his abilities on the pitch.

He was subsequently frozen out of the West Bromwich Albion squad after he tried to force a move to Premier League’s bottom club, Queens Park Rangers.

The attacker reckons his many problems are not down to a "bad attitude" but his "transparency."

“When I give all my heart and effort to a team and get overlooked after, how could I possibly be happy ? Same in eagles. Same in WBA,” he explained via his verified Twitter account, @OdemwingieP on Monday.

The former Lokomotiv Moscow forward, then took the time to highlight the reasons he has come under the spotlight for the wrong reasons in recent days.

“Well praised and most criticised at the same time. Something is wrong somewhere. And I bet it's not in my attitude. I believe in transparency.

He then gave his thoughts on corruption in modern day sports.

“Too much corruption in sports these days. Because of few sportsmen who cheat now doping control went from urine to blood test.

Odemwingie who has 55 caps for Nigeria’s Super Eagles then discussed "indiscipline" in the national team.

“When eagles where moved from a decent hotel to a very average one. Coach said to me : few of the boys are indiscipline.

“In africa we want to be more organised and we use Europe as an example. Yet we listen to our grandfathers who r not exposed to latest.

“Stats in sports speak louder than beliefs,” he posted on Twitter.

Odemwingie famously fell out with former Nigeria coach, Samson Siasia and the WBA attacker tried to reveal the reasons for the impasse.

He revealed that his "commitment" to club duties was responsible for the misunderstanding.

“VERY little thing made me fall out with ex eagles coach Siasia, and that's club commitment. And that commitment was questioned after,” he noted

Odemwingie then took the time to hand some pieces of advice to members of the Nigerian team that won the 2013 Afcon in South Africa.

“What did that teach me ? You only a good guy and professional when you score and give your teams what they want. They throw us out after.

“Coaches, players etc. a coach the country is praising now will one day be sacked and to his achievements they'll say: only one cup? I beg.

He then took a swipe at Nigerian football administrators for "failing to treat former internationals right."

“It's time to change consciousness a bit in naija. Yekini (may his soul RIP) our legend died in poverty. The way our big men spraying now.

“Wish they looked after our heroes when old and in need the way they giving out now. Femi Okpabunmi lost his sight and struggling to feed now.

“The boy got medals and many caps for naija. T. West I heard not so comfortable and few other. Glo and Mtn please compete who give them more.

The striker who began his professional football education in Nigeria with Bendel Insurance in 2000 then accused Nigerian coaches of failure to select players on merit to the national teams.

“I now don't blame our coaches much when they accept gifts from players. Time is short. Our system has to be sorted. We moving too slow.

“One Russian man said : when you hear patriotism talks too much ? Somebody is eating a lot somewhere.

“Every state in naija that produced ex internationals should engage them to community services in form of teaching kids and youths. #pension,” he tweeted.

On how Nigerian sports could improve and achieve its full potentials, Odemwingie also voiced his sentiments.

“Every 20 km in our cities should have a basket ball court like in US. That's why they so good at it," he wrote.

Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu and a few other Nigerian philanthropists splashed financial rewards on the victorious Nigerian 2013 Afcon squad but Odemwingie was not impressed.

“Only if we win a tournament we realise football is soo important and our billionaires come out. They did well. We want more ! Haha,” he said.

He then revealed that he would be "doing something" to give back to the game that brought him so much fame and fortune when he eventually calls time on his career.

“I will come out with something after my carrier (career) is over and set up something. Few of my boys are learning now and preparing. This is no sweet talking. Never been my style and never will be. Me and Freddy Kanu already working on something for few months now,” he revealed.

Supersport targets Nigerian Pidgin English football fans
Published on 24 January 2013
By Gareth van Zyl .
.
Phrases such as ‘How Bodi’, meaning how are you, and ‘I Wan Chop’, meaning I want to eat, are common Pidgin English phrases heard on the streets of Lagos.

But this lingua franca - spoken by over 70 million Nigerians- has moved from the streets to a football website run by South African headquartered broadcaster Supersport.

Pidgin English on a Supersport football website ng.supersport.mobi has grabbed Twitter users’ attention this week, especially following the kickoff of the African Cup of Nations football tournament.

And the sports broadcaster, which has television channels available on DStv packages throughout Africa, has told ITWeb Africa that it has been experimenting with Pidgin English on its websites for about 6 months, culminating in the launch of the ng.supersport.mobi site last December.

The website has both standard English and Pidgin English editorial content focusing on all of the major football leagues, as well as Nigerian football, says Supersport.

“We know that Nigerians are hungry for football content, and we know that local content is often difficult to source,” Graeme Cumming, general manager portals at Supersport, tells ITWeb Africa.

“We have also had some experience with running Africa's biggest reality show in the form of Big Brother Africa. One only has to look at the number of Pidgin English comments on our Big Brother website and Facebook page to understand the need for experimenting with original Pidgin content,” Cumming adds.

Cumming says Supersport does not have figures on how many Pidgin readers it has exactly. But he explains that the broadcasters mobile website audience is one of the biggest on the continent, attracting upwards of one million unique users each month.

Nigerian Pidgin English football fans have taken notice of the Supersport website by offering their feedback.

“Shoo,e gud ooo,for people like me wey no hear english wella, at least they came to my level,” reads a comment from Yomieluv on an online discussion forum on Nairaland.com.

Another commentator, who goes by the name of donroxy, said in a post on Nairaland.com, “Kudos 2 supersport.....Abegi leave am, no toush am!!!!”

However, Supersport’s Pidgin English site has also drawn criticism.

“If this was done to attract readers who can not read english, then it is unnecessary. Reading pidgin requires a skill inaccessible to people who cannot read english,” says Orgasticdance on Nairaland.com.

Another commentator, who goes by the name ‘dmcdad’ on Nairaland.com, says, “I don't really appreciate using pidgin to write articles cuz it's quite difficult comprehending with it.”

With feedback being both positive and negative, Supersport is nevertheless pushing ahead with the initiative, saying it has employed Nigerians as part of its content team. The company says it has also hired out freelancers to produce stories for the website.

And those running the football site may be hoping that their readers continue to ‘listen well well” (pay attention) to what they’re doing.

Sports / This Team Can Be Better Than 94 - Keshi by Livermeka: 6:31pm On Jan 14, 2013

Q&A with Stephen Keshi
by Sammy Wejinya 25 December 2012, 20:50

Head coach of the Nigeria national team, Stephen Keshi has been under intense scrutiny in recent days.

Keshi stroked the fire of controversy on Friday, December 21 when he released a provisional list of 32 players for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Football faithful across the nation raised eyebrows as stellar performers like Kalu Uche, Ozase Odemwingie and Obafemi Martins failed to make the cut.

Odemwingie predictably did not take his exclusion lying down and went on an astonishing tirade via the social networking site, twitter to launch a scathing attack on Keshi, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo.

Millwall Manager, Kenny Jackett, and his Newcastle counterpart, Alan Pardew have made known their intentions of preventing the duo of Danny Shittu and Shola Ameobi from playing for Nigeria at the 2013 Afcon.

Keshi took out the time to discuss the issues with supersport.com and several startling revelations were made.

Odemwingie takes swipe at Keshi

West Bromwich Albion striker, Peter Osaze Odemwingie has hit out at Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi for excluding him in the Afcon provisional squad.

The 32-year-old posted his outburst via his social media account on Twitter, @OdemwingieP, on Sunday.

Odemwingie did not only hit out at Keshi but also at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), former Super Eagles' coaches, Samson Siasia and Lars Lagerback as well as the media and recent captains of the national team describing them as "selfish."

The forward in his social media rant, which began from about noon local time (1pm CAT), claimed that his exclusion from the Africa Cup of Nations provisional squad are "all comedy" based on "lies."

The ex-Bendel Insurance man also took out his anger on a number of Twitter account holders who questioned his rant on the social media network.

"On my not inclusion to the Eagles list I am not surprised. Not surprised Keshi and NFF couldn't tell me themselves. No personality!

"We talk through press hahaha how come I am the only stubborn one but no ex-Eagles player was sent off from the team with respect?

"Keshi has no footballing reasons not to invite me but is not saying the truth. He is still in my plans he said haha coach u no dey my plans.

"To some who wanna put mouth here please act like men. When two men talk 3rd has nothing to do. So Ikpeba and the rest talk to me face to face.

"This is all a comedy and our poor fans are being fed with lies while they cutting the cake for themselves.

"(The) NFF spokesman told MTN he is arrogant? I am arrogant? Why did (the) country's president threaten to close down our federation for two years?

"Why didn't Lagerback continue with (the) Super Eagles after (the 2010) World Cup? Chop and run was his plan and they knew it.

"Nigerian fans voted me Nigerian Player of the Year during (the) World Cup qualifiers and I was a spectator in the World Cup and I should be quiet?

"Because after we got Olympic silver I didn't say Siasia is ready for Eagles he waited till he gets the job to axe me?"

"Okay that childish thing about shirt aside. WBA needed me back for (an) important game and Siasia refused to let me miss a midweek friendly game?

"Where is commonsense there? The game was played in an 80,000 capacity stadium with 2,000 spectators. That's how important the game was!

"They can't spoil my name! That's when I ask my self - do we not have a team captain and federation who can tell it's commonsense? And settle the matter ? Na wow oh.

"Then they don't invite (Vincent) Enyeama our number one for a crucial qualifying game because he complained about a flight or something little? Ridiculous.

"This might sound disrespectful but (the) Eagles had no good captain for many years. Everyone looking only after himself.

"Then SWAN sends a letter to NFF to warn me. (Sorry about that tweet didn't mean it that way). But tell your colleagues not to make up stories.

"A wise man advised me after 1st tweet that there r other ways to make someone look stupid. I am not interested in that. Just cleared maself.

"The only reason I write this is for the fans to know my reasons and position on few things and don't think I don't care or too proud.

"After Afcon in Ghana, (the) Eagles fans were satisfied with our performance and Siasia after the tournament said I will take you to the Olympics.

"They sacked Berti Vogts after it though and just a month after that coach Amodu took over! In his first game in charge I didn't even warm up," wrote the angry striker.

Odemwingie also claimed that while declaring his outburst on Twitter, an unnamed NFF official called him to insult him.

He ended his rant saying he could shut down his Twitter account, which is verified.

"NFF member just called me. Of course got insulted. I told him I sang national anthem for ten years to be treated like this.

"That's it on this. Story ended. No more talks about national team again. I've said all I wanted. If will be tempted will go off twitter," he rounded off.

Sports / Will Danny Shittu Turn Down Nigeria's Afcon 2013 Invitation? by Livermeka: 9:22am On Dec 23, 2012
Shittu unsure about Eagles

Millwall centre-half, Danny Shittu, could turn down the call from Nigeria to play in the 2013 Afcon in South Africa.

According to Millwall manager, Kenny Jackett, the big defender looks set to reject the chance to play for Nigeria after he got a recall on Friday.

Jackett is so sure that the 32-year-old centre-back will not honour the Nigerian call.

"I don't think he's going to go and I don't think he's been in touch with them. At the moment that's the decision."

Arteta penalty seals win for Arsenal
22 Dec 2012 05:24:58

A second-half penalty by Mikel Arteta earned Arsenal a 1-0 victory at Wigan Athletic on Saturday to move the Gunners up to third place in the Premier League.

The Spaniard dispatched his spot kick past Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi after 60 minutes following Theo Walcott's tumble in the penalty area under a clumsy challenge from Jean Beausejour.

Arsenal's third consecutive Premier League victory moved them above Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea onto 30 points from 18 games although Tottenham can move back above their north London rivals if they beat Stoke City later.

Chelsea face Aston Villa on Sunday.

Wigan, third from bottom, had the best chance of a poor first half when Arouna Kone sprinted through on goal but dragged a left-footed shot wide.

Arsenal were more lively after the break and Walcott, who is still to sign a new contract for the club, was denied by Al-Habsi after he was picked out by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Wigan's response was impressive and they forced Arsenal into some desperate defending on a rain-sodden pitch.

Kone had another chance but was denied by Arsenal's Polish keeper Wojciech Szczesny and Dave Jones thumped a shot narrowly wide of the upright with Szczesny rooted to the spot.

Arsenal held out, however, to put some pressure on their rivals for a top-four place.

Later on Saturday, Manchester City can close the gap with leaders Manchester United to three points when they host bottom club Reading.

http://www.supersport.com/football/super-eagles/news/121221/Nigeria_drops_Martins_Odemwingie

Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi has left Obafemi Martins and Peter Osaze Odemwingie from his provisional squad for the 2013 Afcon.

Martins and Odemwingie are among a long list of high-profile names excluded from a 32-man provisional Africa Cup of Nation team.

Other big names missing are Kalu Uche, Taye Taiwo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Joel Obi, who recently recovered from an injury.

But the biggest surprising in the squad is Celtic playmaker, Rabiu Ibrahim who gets his first call under the Nigerian manager.

Defenders Danny Shittu and Kenneth Omeruo are named in the provisional list as Keshi looks keen to solve his team's defensive frailties ahead of the Afcon in South Africa.

Keshi surprisingly announced the provisional list of 14 players from the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) and 18 overseas players on Friday instead of Christmas Day as earlier reported.

The 32-man list was made available after Keshi met with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Committee in Abuja on Friday.

THE FULL LIST OF PLAYERS:

Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel); Austin Ejide (Hapoel Be’er Sheba, Israel); Chigozie Agbim (Enugu Rangers, Nigeria); Daniel Akpeyi (Heartland FC, Nigeria)

Defenders: Elderson Echiejile (FC Braga, Portugal); Juwon Oshaniwa (Ashdod FC, Israel); Benjamin Francis (Heartland FC, Nigeria); Joseph Yobo (Fenerbahce, Turkey); Efe Ambrose (Celtic FC, Scotland); Solomon Kwambe (Sunshine Stars, Nigeria); Azubuike Egwuekwe (Warri Wolves, Nigeria); Danny Shittu (Millwall FC, England); Kenneth Omeruo (ADO Den Haag, Netherlands); Godfrey Oboabona (Sunshine Stars, Nigeria)

Sports / Westerhof Still A Hard Act To Follow by Livermeka: 3:16pm On Dec 21, 2012
Westerhof still a hard act to follow

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Legheri Onyamom
There are a number of reasons why it is important for Nigeria to at least get past the group stage at next year’s Afcon, one of which is to preserve the life span of the present coaching crew of the Super Eagles to ensure continuity.

The authorities have not hesitated to fire erring coaches and this has led to a constant rebuilding of the side.

It’s been 18 years since the departure of the legendary Clemens Westerhof and in that period Nigeria have had 11 different coaches. Shaibu Amodu had four spells as coach.

Nobody knew Westerhof when he came to Nigeria in 1989 and he has achieved little since quitting the Super Eagles but he was able to succeed here because of the talent he met and nurtured to stardom.

Had he not taken over from Paul Hamilton, the likes of Uche Okechukwu, Ben Iroha, Thompson Oliha, Daniel Amokachi and a couple of others may not have made their international breakthrough at the 1990 Afcon. The team had a strong mix of the old and new generations, as well as continuous infusion of new talent that made the Eagles so strong from that point.

Westerhof also had the strong character needed to keep a team, with a lot of bloated egos, going. Besides being a good coach (technically and tactically), he was an excellent manager of his players.

The Dutchman is truly a legend. He lasted five years, the longest ever in the history of Nigerian football, and won silver, bronze and gold in the Afcon as well as leading the Eagles to their first ever World Cup. The Eagles reached the second round before bowing out to eventual runner up, Italy, and were ranked fifth in the world and second most entertaining team.

Westerhof quit immediately after USA ‘94 but he left behind what, at the time, could be considered the most feared side in Africa. Many believe they could have won the 1996 and 1998 Afcons, had they taken part.

Since then there has been this argument that the main reason Westerhof was able to achieve what he did was because he was given enough time and that subsequent coaches have not had the same opportunity. This reasoning is gaining more ground and needs to be checked.

Apart from Amodu, Phillipe Troussier and Bora Multinovic, no other coach sacked since the exit of Westerhof deserved to stay a day longer.

Jo Bonfrere was sacked after he virtually put Nigeria's World Cup qualifying campaign in jeopardy in 2001. He had earlier taken the team to the final of the 2000 Afcon and the Under-23s to the quarterfinal of the Olympic soccer tournament but, had he not been sacked, Nigeria would probably not have qualified for Korea/Japan.

Adegboye Onigbinde took the Eagles to Japan/Korea after Amodu had qualified the team. He dropped key players from the side for reasons best known to him and in their place came a bunch of rookies - most of whom went into oblivion thereafter - and a spent Mutiu Adepoju.

Nigeria failed to reach the second round for the first time after losing their opening two games and the Fifa instructor tried to justify staying on so as to continue his rebuilding. The days of his pranks were over and the NFA did the right thing to part ways with him.

Christian Chukwu won bronze at the 2004 Afcon but failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup from a group comprising Angola, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Gabon, with the Palancas Negras getting the draw they desired right there at the Sani Abacha Stadium. Allowing him to continue would have spelt disaster.

Augustine Eguavoen got to the semifinal of the 2006 Afcon, where they lost to Ivory Coast. Perhaps he was unlucky to be relieved but it was the third straight bronze and the authorities were expecting much more.

Berti Vogts, a European Championship winner with Germany in 1996, led the team to a quarterfinal defeat to hosts Ghana in 2008, a bar below the usual semifinal elimination, and had to pay the price. If Eguavoen could be sacrificed after winning bronze, then Vogts had no case. Besides, the team laboured through the group stages against the likes of Mali and Benin.

Lars Lagerback found himself in charge at the 2010 World Cup after Amodu had qualified the team and failed to qualify from a relatively easy group that also had South Korea and Greece. He could have stayed on if he wanted but opted to leave.

Samson Siasia was the favourite to replace Lagerback following his success at age grade level but he failed to even qualify for the 2012 Afcon. He was duly sacked but fought back initially, threatening to sue his employers for wrongful dismissal. Unfortunate as it seemed, what could Siasia have expected when those who won bronze at the Afcon fell short of the requirement? There was a clause in his contract to take the team to the semifinals and he could not even qualify for the tournament.

Added to his immediate past records of failure with the 2009 class of Flying Eagles and Heartland FC in the 2010 Champions League, it would have been a very huge gamble to entrust the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Siasia's hands and the NFF cannot be faulted for showing him the door. There were bizarre calls in some quarters that he should be allowed to stay on.

Stephen Keshi rose to fame as an international coach after qualifying little Togo for the World Cup ahead of continental powerhouses like Morocco and Senegal in 2006. However, he was sacked a few months later after failing to take The Hawks beyond the first round of the Afcon. Of course there was the much publicised row with national idol Emmanuel Adebayor, who claimed the big boss wanted to manage him.

He later guided Mali to the 2010 Afcon but again failed to go beyond the group stage and got the boot. He was in the running for the Super Eagles job with Siasia but lost out and it was no surprise they turned to him immediately Siasia got the chop. His first assignment in charge of a Nigerian team was in 2001 when the Under-20s failed to progress past the group stage at the Africa Youth Championship.

So, having qualified Nigeria for the 2013 Afcon, what will it take for Keshi to avoid the chop and be given five years or more to build a strong side like Westerhof?

He would have to go a step further than his previous tournaments by getting past the group stage in South Africa and that is by no means a tall order. The draws have been kind to him so far in the Afcon qualifying, Afcon finals and World Cup qualifying and there should not be much of a problem between the Afcon finals and the next stage of the World Cup qualifying.

Drawn along with Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia, the Eagles should be able to make progress in the Afcon, while they are expected to see off the challenge of minnows (yes, there are still minnows) Malawi, Namibia and Kenya to reach the final stage of the World Cup qualifiers.

The side needs to improve technically too and only the best players, whether based at home or abroad, should be considered.

The key to Westerhof's longevity was that, rather than stutter, he made progress at each stage of his stay. Nigeria may have won bronze at Senegal 92 but they were unlucky and could have gone all the way. With minor changes, such as Friday Elaho making way for Emmanuel Amunike, Jay Jay for Friday Ekpo and Chidi Nwanu for Keshi, he was able to leave a sound legacy before departing.

One of the strongest characters in the Nigerian game, Keshi is on course to matching his ''masters'' achievements with the results posted so far but the ball remains firmly in his court to sustain it as the challenges will get harder as time goes on.

Sports / Counting On Mikel To Be A Messi- Segun Odegbami by Livermeka: 9:48am On Dec 21, 2012
Expert Opinions: Counting on Mikel to be a Messi-by Segun Odegbami

There is simply no getting away from the issue of Lionel Messi these days. In April I described Barcelona as the greatest team in history and Lionel Messi as the greatest player.

The reactions were fast and furious: my assertion was premature. Messi had not won the World Cup with his country's national team like Maradona and Pele. Messi had not played enough games or scored enough goals like Pele and Gerd Muller. The critics were obviously looking more at the statistics than what Messi was doing with the ball.

Now, it is obvious I was prophetic.

Eight months later, the world is looking beyond the statistics. At 25, with years still left in his feet and goals in his boots, Messi has already re-written football history. At the last count he has scored, arguably, more goals in one football season than anyone else in history. He achieved this feat in less matches than the man who is generally believed (in the absence of acceptable universal data) to hold the record, Gerd Muller.

When Messi is eventually crowned the world's best player again this year, he will be setting another record as the first person in history to be crowned the world's best four times. Hopefully he still has time on his side to add to that number before he quits the game.

Lionel Messi, week after week, is doing to football what Picasso did to art, what Albert Enstein did to science, and what Mandela is doing to humanity!

Thoughts of him bring up the second thing on my mind - Afcon 2013.

What has Lionel Messi got to do with Africa's greatest football show? The answer is Mikel Obi, the Nigerian defensive midfield player making his mark quietly in the colours of Chelsea and the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Seven years ago Messi and Mikel, both 18 years old at the time, competed on the same stage for who would be the best young player in the world. That epic 'battle' was fought at the 2005 World Youth Championship in Holland.

Messi and Mikel both captained their national under-20 teams to the championship. Argentina and Nigeria met at the finals in an encounter that provided a sneak preview of the future. On the night, Argentina won with two moments of magic provided by Lionel Messi.

He conjured the two penalty kicks that separated the two teams. They were moments of brilliance and sheer magic in the dying minutes of a hard-fought match that saw both players struggle to dominate the midfield.

Messi's goals provided the slim edge over Mikel, who had conducted Nigeria's midfield with the elegance, composure, confidence and efficiency of a maestro. So good were both players that, at the end of the championship, Messi was crowned king and Mikel was named second best player.

Since then both players have charted different paths, only meeting again this past season in the semifinal of the European Club Championships, where Mikel and Chelsea had the upper hand over Messi and Barcelona in terms of the final result.

Messi will not be at Afcon 2013. Mikel will be.

There is increasing expectation and mounting pressure by Nigerians for the Super Eagles to win Afcon 2013.

That’s where Mikel comes in. Nigerians are counting on him playing at his best again these days, to use his vast experience and leadership to lead Nigeria's onslaught.

The man is getting used to winning championships. There is something about Mikel that is special and confounding.

He brings all of that to the Super Eagles. With his quiet mien and conservative but consistent performances, Mikel Obi could just be the joker up the sleeve with which Nigeria can win the African championship. He is on my mind.
