Travel / Re: On Nigerians And The 'must Travel Mentality' by saska1122: 10:30pm On Sep 27, 2014
injuredman: What we fail to know as Nigerian youths is that people build those countries we are running to. Simple good will and cooperation built those country, not 'dog chop dog' we are practicing here.
a) How many of us can do anything that benefits the next door neighbor without asking for a favor in return?
b) How many of us are ready to obey simple rules (e.g. Traffic laws) or report any erring person? Disobeying laid down rules is a sign of smartness or 'big-manism' in Nigeria.
c) Most of the things we see 'abroad' are built by individuals, families or cooperate bodies as a way of giving back to the society. How many can we boast of?
d) When we say 'society', who do we refer to? Ourselves, friends and families. So, who caused the decay we have today?

The major problem we have today in Nigeria is self-centeredness. Running abroad may not take that from lots of us. Go to communities with large Nigerian populations in the western world (UK and US) you will still find: cutting of corners, hatred, envy, gossips, 'pull him down', 'my own better pass his own', poor maintenance to personal items, and all vices we have here.
People talk of constant electricity, internet etc. Are these things free? Do you know most of the state generate their power in US and Canada? Even private individuals install solar power, use part and feed some into the supply line for profit? How many of us ranting have friends and families who worked in the defunct PHCN? These our friends and families killed PHCN with the cooperation of the leaders.
I use to make an equivalent of =N=500K every month, but hardly saved for 2 yrs.

Making Nigeria a better place is a collective effort, running away is not a solution. Are there no poor men in 'abroad'? They all make collective effort to help the poor. We make sure we widen the gap, so we could be worshiped as a 'richman'.

IT IS ALL VANITY!!!!

@bros, e be like we don meet before on this matter!! lol.

You nailed it!!

Which of these is not practiced in Nigeria in great proportion and by all tribes and ethnic groups?

Why are we not sincere to ourselves? OK, I know why. The OP didn't mention 'the man with fisherman's hat'.

Women trying to defend one of their own.

@OP, U can never win a case in a court where a woman is the judge here.
Avoid the said woman, she is a desperado n a cheat as some Nigerian women are.
I agree some women are good, but the bad ones keep painting womanhood in a bad color,
but unfortunately, some won't answer the question U posed.

Yea, Final year is always the time to realize these mistakes. All hope is not lost except she accepts to be defeated.
Even if she has to graduate with a pass(1.4 is a pass), but let her loose her head.
Like @leki2 said, there is more to education than grades(or class of degree). Let her tell her family and face
whatever comes out of it. The challenges we face in life makes us stronger.

But on a serious note, BB(or phone internet) has done more harm to our younger generation than good. Like someone said,
all most of them do with their internet is "Pinging", facebooking etc. Imagine me trying to assist a student to solve
some problem and she is busy with her phone. All she was doing was replying to facebook messages. I stopped helping since
that day. I think our society should start to preach "Freedom with responsibility" which is lacking otherwise the future
will be horrible when the crop of students today are in leadership position.

This woman did do this in order to gain anybody's praise or sympathy here. She had her reasons and mostly may not have had an alternative.
I'm sure she did not put that picture here nor did she ask the OP to do so. Yet, most of us are claiming safety personnel here and abusing her.
With conviction I say this:if U reside in Nigeria, there is 75% chance that your grand parents, uncles, aunties or even some extended family
members took(or are taking) similar risks. If U are in diaspora, there is 65% chance some persons in ur lineage took some kind of risk to put ur parents/grandparents to school or trade.
All they cared for was your survival or that of ur parents.

All of those shouting risk and for some that even show some level of inhumane nature to abuse the poor woman, how many of you will make a 1 month trip
to ur village and undertake a FREE enlightenment to the villagers on these risky 'survival skills'. PLEASE WHEN U DO, DO IT QUIETLY AND DON'T ASK ANYONE FOR MONEY. I know must person will claim they are not from rural areas, but we know the truth.

With the coming of internet comes FAKE lives of some people. If U are in diaspora, please visit home and see life in reality.
If U have made it, I don't think it was all ur efforts, so stop adding abuse to the already suffering masses in Nigeria.
That we live in denial is what is keeping us as a country where we are!!

Nairaland / General / Re: What Was The Worst April Fool Played On/by You? by saska1122: 10:02pm On Apr 01, 2012
This morning I called my fiancee and after exchanging some few pleasantries, I started like this:
'Nkechi, I have a confession to make. I know U love me, but I hope U can handle this. I have been
wanting to say this for a very long time, but I couldn't know the best time. I don't know how to
start, but I need to start somewhere. The more I hold this to myself, the more harm it can cause.
I don't know the effect of this on our relationship, but like a priest at the confessional, I want this
to end between two of us. Are U ready to hear my confession?'

She answer with a fainting voice, "what is please go straight to the point." At that point, I knew I've
gotten her. So, I continued:
'Before I came home for your introduction last September, I got involve with a lady which I so much love.
We got married in July last yr. Your introduction was just to please my parents and friends'

She swallowed a thick saliva. 'Did U hear me?' she said YES.
What is today's date? She said '1st'
'Do have a pen and paper to record this conversation?' I asked again.
She responded, 'No need to write it down'.
I said, 'Okay, but U note today's date well?'

She said 'YES' with her voice becoming fainter. I knew something will happen if I end the call without telling her.
I continued, 'Today is the 1st of which month?', to which She said '1st of April'. I quickly added, APRIL FOOL!!!

Politics / Re: Akwa Ibom Bridge The Longest In Africa? by saska1122: 4:15am On Mar 28, 2012
pssword: The post above was not in support of Attah, if you that is what you think. Attah also started the science and technology centre but never finished amongst other white elephant projects. Akpabio did not initiate the airport and the infrastructure was developed upto a significant state before he took over. Don't forget that Akpabio was also Attah's commissioner and best friend who benefited from the farce before they fell out. These infrastructures are white elephants projects designed to siphon money out without any real benefits to the indigenes of the state. Just like his predecessor, there is no forward thinking, or an thought of the people in the state. How many have got jobs and I'm not talking about his contract lackeys. With all that resource the state is still choking in under-development and poverty while he sprays money from one whimsical ceremony to another.. waste of space.

I think U are 80% correct with your assertion. Attah had what people may call 'vision', but he was beclouded by PDP patronage and using contracts as political compensations. Hence, all the urban roads he awarded contracts in his 1st tenure were all failure. The ones done in his 2nd tenure were mostly inferior. But, at least he had the ideas or maybe vision?
Akpabio on the other hand has tried to be more pragmatic in his execution of projects though he's too loquacious(at least for me). Not many governors or political office holders would continue/complete projects started by the previous administration, especially given how they fell-out with each other. Those dis-crediting Akpabio are just being self-centered, most of them want their godfathers to have d contracts and leave them undone as they did in Attah's tenure. I still believe more can be done and with transparency.
Those shouting about human development, get your facts correct!! During Attah's regime, more than 50 indigenes of the state were sent to Canada to study ICT, but the man that headed that program made a mess of it and used it to amass money meant for that program for himself n his cohorts. Those guys struggled to survive in Canada. They will never come back. On the other hand, the new teaching staff of the new university in the state that were sent for MSc/PhD in UK n US are still catered for by present administration till date. Some are already back to the new university.Though d program started during Attah's regime, but this administration has borne the greater part of that responsibility as Attah's administration paid for only the 1st yr. Most people wouldn't continue on that sponsorship. So, I think it is good not to talk out of sentiments.
A lot still need to be done in AKS, but we need people to work together and stop over-dependence on the government. Any economy that will survive is private sector driven.
If AKS now has good roads, investor should go in a build industries, farmers can bring their products to the city easily n cheap.

Culture / Re: Is Taking Care Of Your Parents Your Responsibility? by saska1122: 3:54am On Mar 27, 2012
I hope this doesn't become another diaspora Vs Naija argument since we don't have nursing home in Naija.

Culturally, Africans like(or atleast used to) communal life, hence the concept of taking care of aged parent
is inherent in different part of Africa, the same way most of us lived with our parents till we can build our
own house. But, 'open eye', class distinction, evolution/gene mutation have turned many parents 'control freaks'
such that many children can't wait to break off from the parents. For such children, the idea of parents living
with them at old age is a 'daylight nightmare'.

For me, YES, taking care of my parents and parents-in-law is my responsibility. At least my parent even when they
are presently living on their income respect my opinion and decisions(my parent in-law? Don't know yet). So, giving
my parent a flat next to mine is what I'm planning.
As humans, our aged parents are our responsibilities. If U suspect they may still dictate what you do, they can live
in their house while U see them daily and cater for all their needs financially.

Romance / Re: Are You Faithful In Your Current Relationship? by saska1122: 8:47pm On Mar 26, 2012
Most girls are very faithful.
EXAMPLE
He came home 3 hrs before his official returning time and bumped in to the parlor only to find her wedded wife semi-unclad talking on phone.
As soon she sees her hubby, the phone went off. The guy pretended and got an irrelevant stuff and left the house again. Unknown
to the randy wife, the guy tiptoed and waited beside the bedroom window.
Few minutes later, madam entered the bedroom and the phone conversation resumed. Pure raw gist that ended with making it out on phone.
As she screamed the guy went in through the back door(since Madam had locked the main entrance). When confronted by the husband, she swore
by her late father's grave that she was not cheating. Yet, the hubby says she was cheating on him.

My question: Is this not 'faithfulness'? What defines cheating? Does it has to do with 'penetration' alone?

I wish Nigerian girls are realistic.
More than 50% will go back and say YES once there is a change in economic status.
Upto 30% of the ladies will even find a way of making the guy interested if the guy was no more interested even sometimes offer apologies for turning down the initial offer.

It is only in Nigeria that a NO does not mean a NO in relationship.

I may not have time to argue whether Solomon was a wise man or not since most of us only see things from our own point of view. We sometimes lack the patience to reason objectively and that is one of the problem we are where we are as a nation.

Those saying that Solomon is a 'metaphorical' character created by Christendom, did christians write the Quran? Solomon is called Suleiman in the Quran. Ever heard of 'The Queen of Sheba' visiting Solomon? She was from Ethopia, and secular history documents her genealogy in the Ethopian history. Even upto Emperor Haile Selassie I. Ogamgil: I pity u 4 what u hav said. Let me just say its ignorance that made u commit such heresy. Better bend down on ur knees and beg God 4 forgiveness before the rot of God befalls u.

@Ogamgil, I am a Catholic and very close to the church presbytery. The guy maybe wrong in making a generalization, but most persons going into the catholic priesthood these days leave many questions about their vocation. Paul admonished us to live a life worthy of our callings. Yes, a catholic priest is well educated in theology, philosophy, mission, church history etc, but they need to earn the confidence of the congregation by showing that they understood their VOW of Celibacy. Or at least hide some of their escapades.
We need to say the truth NO MATTER HOW BITTER.
Romance / Re: Must A Man Wear A New Suit On His Wedding Day? by saska1122: 6:09pm On Mar 15, 2012
This is what is keeping us backward. We over-do things we see others do.
White wedding is another person's culture(Western Culture). They sold the idea
to us when they brought Christianity and formal education. In the western world,
most grooms just use their old suite even when they have access to buy anything on credit.

Nearly everyone responding here is arguing how lovely/newly it is to to use new suite.
My question is: How does this contribute to the QUALITY of the marriage? Why must we do
things to please others or feel among without thing what value that thing adds to your life.

Most wives have sent their husbands to early graves because they won't 'rent' a gown. After
buying a 75-150K gown, and using it just within 4hours, after all 'it's my day', what happen
to the economy of your new home.

Have you ever thought of people who don't have 'okrika' to wear? Sorry, I forgot the world is

This what we know best how to do; Blame game!!
The poor blames the rich for their misfortune,
The igbos blame yorubas n vice versa.
Those living in Nigeria think it is the Diaspora even as they visit various embassies for visa
or depend on those outside in 1 way or the other.
In the present day and age, we are all corrupt. Go to offices closest to U, and ask for a file.
How many Nigerians are in Diaspora and how many are convicted yearly as opposed to those
at home who kill, steal and do all sort of evil yet we celebrate them either because we share the
loot or they are from our tribes.
Until we reason and argue objectively, we'll get there (Implosion) faster than predicted.
