Car TalkRe: Negotiating Bends At High Speed by 9icetoo(m): 1:56am On Mar 30, 2020
This kind thread self.
It's not a German or Asian thing. It's all about what a manufacturer wants to achieve.
Most BMW cars will out manoeuvre most Mercedes Cars at bends. BMW distribute their weight and tune their suspension to give their cars a sporty feel. Most of then achieve 50/50 weight distribution by having their engines way inside in the engine bay. Audi's are like that too.
That being said, there are Asian cars that will shame the fabled German cars at bends. Mitsubishi lancer evo, Honda prelude (already mentioned), Subaru imrezza (not Asian) to name a few.
It would be foolish to attempt to take bends with a g wagon because it's German. An mdx or fx35 or rx350 will take any bend faster than any g wagon.
It's not about German engineering.
Four wheel drive cars will handle bends better than rear wheel drive cars.
Driving thru a bend at speed requires skill too. Depending on the bend, you either brake into it and accelerate out or blaze through it. Your familiarity with the road will also help.
Even F1 cars humble themselves at bends not to talk of regular run of the mill cars.
My racing (reckless) days are behind me. I'm responding to this shit cos I'm bored. sad
This whole German herd mentality is becoming annoying really.
Car TalkRe: Could Something Be Wrong With This Mileage? by 9icetoo(m): 10:56pm On Mar 28, 2020
Low mileage driven in New York will be worse than high mileage driven 90% on the highway. There is no hard and fast rule although there are exceptions (300,000) cheesy Na better mileage oo.
That said, if the body of this car is neat, free of rust and no error codes, I'd buy the car.
Car TalkRe: Honda Crv 2012 Rattle Sound On Starting by 9icetoo(m): 11:23am On Mar 24, 2020

Car runs great. I have no reason to get rid of it.

Oil is being changed at Honda place. I haven't gone there to complain about this sound cos I want to seek people with the type of sound and what they did first
Your camshaft or crankshaft actuator is having a bit of a clearance. When you park the vehicle, the oil drains out. At startup, the clearance causes the rattle which quickly goes away as oil is forced into the cams.
I had a similar problem which I cared by changing cams though I caused it myself.

That being said, saying you service your vehicle at Honda place doesn't answer the question of what type of oil you are using.
I have come across dealers who use the wrong oil spec to service vehicles.

Next time you take your car there, use cunny man sense find out which oil they are using to service your vehicle.

I won't be surprised if it's not the recommended or a very low grade oil which started your problem.

You are right. It's just like 2sec. Wont there be any effect if used like that for a long time?
You would have got rid of the car long before the issue degenerates.
What type of oil are you using by the way?

1 Aunty said brand does not matter .....we can agree to disagree... the quality of oil matters ,which is associated with brand.. Gucci is brand, Rolex is brand , Toyota is brand etc .. Those brands are associated with quality ....some brands go way above and beyond than others... for example if am driving a million dollar car , I would look for the best engine oil possible.. Some brand of engine oil are better than Mobil 1 oil .....

Now in your case as long as you use quality oil switch from type to another type of brand is ok ... A customer called few days and requested for Valvoline oil . I said Mobil 1 or Castrol is good .. But he said the previous owner used Valvoline oil and he wants to continue using Valvoline.. I told him Mobil 1 is equally as good .. That is how I settle the matter.... Some brand of oil will do better than others....
That's a 10w-30 but not suited for modern engines. Now if someone pours this in their engine, they are on their own. Brand to me doesn't really matter as long as they have the API rating and are certified. One might be better than the other but it doesn't mean the other still won't do the job. After all, it has met the minimum requirements.

As in ehn. Knowledge is just unlimited. Thank you 9icetoo
That's why we have this forum. To share knowledge. Sometimes, the solution to some problems are just unorthodox. You will get to draw from the experience of a while lot of people.
I am not a mechanic but I have fixed more cars or helped fix more cars than a whOle lot of smart people here. Same goes for other members of this forum.
I always start with the inexpensive and least invasive fixes before going to the expensive and invasive ones depending on what I suspect is the problem.
Cheers.

Thank you dear friends. IT WAS BAD TIRES AFTER ALL. i took time and did more study on why the humming noise on the wheel and with what you guys counselled. One of the causes highlighted was bad tires. So today, i took it out and changed the tires from front to rare. I also discovered that all the 4 tires are expired (3813). After the change, i did alignment and balancing. I just drove about 20miles with all glass rolled up and radio off....THE SOUND IS GONE.

I am getting all new tires shortly. At least i am restful now. Thank you so much for your contribution, i am grateful.
Smartchoiice,
Read the above. Next time, don't be so malicious with your words. Eat your humble pie.
Thanks.

Car TalkRe: ......20w50 Oil Does More Harm To Your Engine if it is not needed ... by 9icetoo(m): 8:55am On Mar 16, 2020
sooperrescue:
You have been very busy trying to convince a lot of die hard 20w50 fans. Great job. The state of naija used cars points to one direction. Wrong use of engine oil. I have always believed that there is a grand conspiracy to destroy our cars by the oil companies. Recently, Sahara group and Nnpc just introduced their 20w50 oil into the market and with the way they are hyping the oil, that means that they will reduce the population of cars from our roads. Even though we talk about voided warranty, when we use 20w50, it is the company that provides the warranty that is voiding the warranty. A lot of new cars are being serviced with 20w50 by the authorized dealership and you will now ask, who will provide the warranty if that oil is being used. And when you use the oil that is not recommended for your car, the car is gradually being destroyed. Kia and Hyundai took over the market share from corolla because of elizade policy of using 20w50 to service their cars and these same dealers are now using the same 20w50. I have gone round several dealers offices and they are all using 20w50 oil for their new vehicles. Either it is deliberate or they are ignorant. But I think it is the money making factor that is driving them to destroy the cars and sell more cars. Cars 45 are carrying the burden of the poor maintenance culture in the country. I have never seen anyone who took their well maintained cars to sell to them. At their yard, you will always find disgusting cars there and it is these holy motorists who were once proud owners of these cars that dumped them there. Mechanics and parts sellers are smiling to the banks all the time because we want to tell people that we know more about the car than the manufacturer.
I've mentioned it on Nairaland before. The dealerships are killing cars.
The oil I saw them using to service engines and transmissions was just unbelievable.
Imagine pouring Dozzy transmission oil into a 2015 Kia Rio auto transmission. Incredible. I couldn't believe my eyes.

I saw several Kia Rio's with blown engines. I mean with connecting rods sticking out of the blocks and some with piston and cylinder scouring so bad that you'd think something threw a grinding stone into the engine.

Yet people still think new engines are fine with 20w50. For temporary use, it is. For long term use, you are killing your engine slowly.

Old engines may be fine with it, if the manufacturer recommends it.

No wonder engines are shipped on a daily basis in and out of Ladipo.

Before dishing out your advice, you should consider whether the Op knows an expert technical hand that can carry-out conversion with no issues afterwards. I have seen men who got frustrated after carrying out a conversion, post conversion issues no be here.

I feel that no matter how cheap the owner wishes to sell the car, the Op should be prepared to replace the gearbox. Or look for one with a factory fitted manual transmission to buy.
1. It is a 206 in disguise. Shouldn't be rocket science to convert to manual.
2. It is not in my place to consider the availability of technical know how to do the conversion, it is the op's cup of tea.
3. Did I offend you in any way? Cos me I am not understanding oo.

If the car is stunningly cheap, and you don't mind driving a manual, buy it and swap in a manual gear box.

Abeg I need strong comparison between acura mdx 06 and honda pilot 08
Which is advisable to buy?
Cc nurey
The 06 mdx is the first gen while the 08 pilot is a newer generation over the 06 mdx.
It would be better to compare the 08 mdx to 08 pilot. Both are nice cars but in this case, I suggest you take the 08 pilot over the 06 mdx.
Power - 08 pilot
Room - 08 pilot
Interior - same
Handling - I haven't driven the 06 pilot but it's got good reviews so I would say same.
Maintenance - I'd say same. They are both Honda's baiscally
Aesthetics - I prefer the look of the 08 pilot to the 06 mdx.

I'd pick the 08 pilot though if I was in your shoes.

Lets not forget that even the chemicals used in producing these liquid wash we use in washing vehicles right now are much harder than what was being used before.

I recall those days when i was much younger, my father wouldn't let his driver's wash his cars with any soap. He would insist that you use only water except for the tires. But this is different from what is obtainable today.

Have you also wondered why your car paints fade with time? If we could easily change our car paints when faded, why not our no plates as well when faded?
Then make one with that in mind. I do not wash my Cars with soap yet a plate number I acquired in late 2018 is already fading.
You could talk to your bosses about this. This is a general public complaint. The quality of the number plates is below par.

That's not what I am here for. It's good to banter and all that, but it should be done with some level of intelligence.
I was only trying to point out the wrong assumption that quality is luxury.

I don't care who is a better or bigger company between Toyoda and Mercedes. The shareholders don't give a rats arse what anyone here thinks.

Someone will walk into a Toyota dealership tomorrow and buy a brand new Toyota. Same thing goes with Mercedes.
People will buy what they want, need and can afford or can't afford. It's their problem.

However

Reliability and durability are sides of the same coin. They both use same parameters of measure just that emphasis is different.

Smartchoiice:
You're making a mistake.
Durability= Mercedes Benz (non debatable)
Reliability= Toyota (very debatable)
You are making a mistake. Read what I wrote again and try to understand. Quality does not mean luxury anywhere.

A sofa made of leather appears luxurious but if the cage and other supports inside the sofa are made of poor materials and workmanship, it will not last long. In this sense, it is not going to be relied on to last for 10-20 years. It is not reliable.

A sofa made of cloth appears to be plain and of course not luxurious but if the cloth, support cage, and workmanship is of high quality, it will last the owner for ages.

I hope this simple submission is clear enough.

Quality is not luxury.

However
Car TalkRe: Is Toyota A Better Company Than Mercedes? by 9icetoo(m): 6:03pm On Feb 29, 2020
AmuDimpka:
Bigger doesn't mean quality
.....okay to make you happy

Toyota is bigger than Benz
Bigger than BMW
Niger than Ferrari
Bigger than Lamborghinis
Bigger than Aston Martin
Bigger than Rolls Royce

Are you happy now ?
Quality begets reliability.
You can't separate them.
Low quality results to low reliability. High quality begets high reliability.
Do not mistake quality for luxury. They are two totally different things.

Don't get it twisted.

Having ruled out some likely causes, replace your thermostat with a new one. It is not expensive and can be done in a few minutes.
I suspect your thermostat is sticking in the closed position.
Don't allow that red light come on again. Though that engine is strong, it is aluminium and will warp with prolonged overheating. If this fails to cure the overheating, then you may have failing water pump.
