This is one of the reason for amalgamation. To ease and distribute the financial burden of running the northern protectorate to the rest of the country and to legitimize the remittance of the British to the Northern protectorate. £100,000 pre-amalgamation is equivalent to tens of billions of pounds(£) today. I'm surprised that the north are openly and shamelessly claiming to be the mainstay of the nation prior to the discovery of oil.
