CultureRe: Nigeria's Disappearing Languages by Afam4eva(m): 4:10pm On Nov 14, 2013
ngozievergreen: u mean 90% of Igbo stay outside d east?
I said IF 90% live in Igboland which would be an overwhelming majority. It doesn't mean that 90% live outside of it. We may not know exactly how many Igbos live outisde the SE but one thing is certain 40% of Igbos still live in Igboland. It could be more but this figure is closer to the truth. Mind you, more people will keep moving out cos it seems that to a lot of Nigerians, if you don't live in Lagos, Abuja or Port-hacourt, you can't make it in life.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: DSTV Opens All Channels For Free For A Week by Afam4eva(m): 4:06pm On Nov 14, 2013
Does this apply to people whose subscription have expired? My has expired and if it applies to people like us then i may want to halt subcribing for a week while it lasts.
CultureRe: Nigeria's Disappearing Languages by Afam4eva(m): 4:01pm On Nov 14, 2013
Lilimax: It is true the children may find it difficult to see whom to converse with in Igbo but let them understand the language first. Presently my son is speaking the language which he could not speak until I forced him to be responding in Igbo whenever we're discussing.
Again I'm considering adopting my parents style of training when me and my sibblings were growing up. We all went to Primary School in Lagos but were all sent to the East for our secondary schools.
Today, all of us can write and speak Igbo fluently.
I think this is a very good model cos the reason Igbo language is dying is because a lot of Igbos migrate out of their ancestral home. If we had at leat 90% of Igbos living or having lived in Igboland then most Igbos will know how to speak the language. Most people who speak Igbo today are people who are either above 25 years and above or have lived measurably in Igboland.

sbeezy8: ^^^ I said before that tribes assimilate into hausa and yoruba majority of the time- I was right
It's true for Hausa but not Yoruba. Note than learning and assimilation are two different things.
CultureRe: Nigeria's Disappearing Languages by Afam4eva(m): 2:48pm On Nov 14, 2013
Lilimax: ssshhh sad!
I have a lot of yoruba friends and colleagues.
They are facing the same issue with their children simply because they did not teach them the language early in life.

We've determined to teach our little ones their mother tongues.
It is working as they are picking up the language very fast.
Picking up the language is one thing and sustaining it is another. Who will those children be speaking Igbo with? I grew up knowing how to speak passive Igbo in Lagos but the problem i had was whom to speak with. In all the schools i attended Igbo made up at least 20% of the population and when someone who's Igbo comes across you and says "Are you Igbo? I'm Igbo too". That's where it stops. It doesn't get to the extent where i start conversing in Igbo with the person because the person most likely cannot speak Igbo. How can someone be proud of being Igbo or highlight that fact everywhere but can't speak the language.
CultureRe: Nigeria's Disappearing Languages by Afam4eva(m): 2:47pm On Nov 14, 2013
Eze Promoe: Before either Igbo would be going into extinction, all the minority languages might have gone into extinction.
Most definitely but has it now come to the extent when we compare the Igbo langaue with other minority languages? The only reason why those minority languages will die off before Igbo is just due to the poopulation of Igbo speakers who mostly in the Igboland. I can tell you that those Minority languages are even more preserved than Igbo. It's a shame really.
CultureRe: Nigeria's Disappearing Languages by Afam4eva(m): 2:31pm On Nov 14, 2013
I don't think Igbo language will go into extinction in the next 50 years like posited though i think among the tripod(Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba), Igbo will probably be the first that will go into extinction if someone drastic is not done and the reasons are obvious. For a lot of Igbos in the 21st century, being formally educated goes hand in hand with not knowing how to speak Igbo. It seems the more educated we get, the more likely we throw away our cultural artifacts and become more English than the English themselves. A society that considers ones ability to speak fluent, unadulterated English as being Intelligent will have a lot of problems sustaining it's indigenous language and it's a shame that the Igbo language is mostyl at the receiving end.
CultureRe: Why Would A Human Being Classify Another As An Outcast "Osu" ? by Afam4eva(m): 2:17am On Nov 13, 2013
Dibiachukwu: I never heard of anything called Osu until I started watching movies.
No be only you oo...I have never seen an osu in my life or even heard where they've been discriminated against before. I know it exists but in very minute capacity. I think it's exaggerated.
SportsRe: Is Victor Oladipo Nigeria's Next NBA Superstar And The New Hakeem Olajuwon? by Afam4eva(m): 1:54am On Nov 13, 2013
How many times will Okafor be traded? Charlotte Bobcats => New Orleans Hornets => Washington Wizards and now he's going to Phoenix suns. To top it all up, he's got an injury and could be out all season.
TravelRe: Relocating To Abuja From Lagos by Afam4eva(m): 1:30am On Nov 13, 2013
honey86: Abuja in my opinion is too expensive for those who are just starting life. please stay back in lagos. Accommodation, transport and food stuffs is do expensive unless you want to be going to the outskirts to shop.
It's only accomodation that's expensive. Transportation and Food items are cheaper and better when compared to Lagos. Though i don't think Abuja is somewhere someone goes to be financially whatever.
SportsRe: Is Victor Oladipo Nigeria's Next NBA Superstar And The New Hakeem Olajuwon? by Afam4eva(m): 1:27am On Nov 13, 2013
Abeg, is there any Nigerian basketball player making waves in the NCAA that we should watch out for in the NBA in some years to come? Where's this Ekene Ibekwe guy from University of Maryland? Didn't he join the draft?
SportsRe: Is Victor Oladipo Nigeria's Next NBA Superstar And The New Hakeem Olajuwon? by Afam4eva(m): 1:26am On Nov 13, 2013
Warrior X: You all should take it easy with your "information"

Victor Oladipo's dad is a Yoruba from Sierra Leone, his mum is Nigerian (Ibo) and he was born and raised in America. (Funny thing is that Victor is very close with his mum and not at all close with his dad)

Jeff Green's mum is American but she married a Nigerian.

Jahlil Okafor's dad is Nigerian and Jahlil actually visited Nigeria some years ago. His mum is American but she passed away when he was young.

Rasheed Sulaimon's dad is Nigerian, Mum is from Jamaica.
His father has never supported his Basketball career. Is his dad from Sierra Leone or probably nationalized there cos an article in yahoo says both of his parents are Nigerians. While his mother is Igbo, his Father is Yoruba, . I've never heard of a Yoruba Sierra-leonian before.

Italiano1: Afam trust me I know how difficult your job as a mod, I am one of the unruly ones in the ethnic section. However on a number of times, I have noticed that Igbo posters contact you when Yorubas are raining it down and going hard, you come there and hide all our posts and ban us but leave a lot of the Ibo posters.

That is bias - pure and simple!
How do you guyz even know that i ban you and leave others. It's only the banned that can know that they were banned. let me also ask you, how many times have you reported offensive posts by other users. Sometimes when i enter a thread, i do so cos of a specific report i got about a particular post and there might be other offensive posts on that thread but i handle that one before deciding whether or nor to ransack the entire thread. That's the reason why some people will accuse me of hiding one posts and leaving the other. At times it's also due to oversight. We can't always see everything.

Obiagelli: Afam is too pro gej and pdp, it is wrong if we don't get an Apc mod.
I'm not Pro anybody. I'm pro-issues. Though i've been on the neck of APC lately, i have also supported some of their assertions before. I support Fashola and Rochas and they're in APC. I hate Theoodore Orji and most PDP governors, so you're not right in your assessment of my political stand.
PoliticsRe: Let's Have Your Complaints, Suggestions & Enquiries Here by Afam4eva(m): 4:36pm On Nov 12, 2013
donphilopus: You've been accused of banning yoruba posters and leaving the Igbos whenever a thread is hot, can you defend yourself??
Yes, i have banned some Yoruba posters and left some Igbo posters and vice versa but i didn't do soo because of the tribe they came from. I seldom even look at people's ID before banning them especially if it's one of those threads were WW3 happens. I can go to a thread and see people throwing jibes at each other but i mustn't ban everyone. I ban people based on the severity of their crime and also based on their reputation. For instance, people like Chino always gets banned by me for the slightest crime and it's because people like that are legends in causing trouble and fanning it. If i were to hide and ban posters just because they were somehow involved in making some snide comments then i can assure you that almost every post on this section will be hidden save for a few. Why trying to keep the fprum clean, we have to endeavor not to stifle freedom of speech and we have to do that by hiding extreme or pseudo extreme posts and ban the loser and the reason was posited by Seun earlier on.

Italiano1: See a good mod taking his sensitivity training seriously grin grin

You are decent one but sometimes you allow your tribalistic tendency to overtake your emotions.
It depends on what you mean by tribalistic. I'm a Passionate Igbo person but that does not affect my job as a mod. Atleast i try to remain as objective as possible but no matter how much i try, it can never be enough. Mind you, as you're accusing me of being tribalistic towards people who aren't from my tribe, some Igbo guys on here have accused me of eating being another Joe Igbokwe.

HealthRe: Curing Leukaemia With HIV: Breakthough On Treatment For Cancer? by Afam4eva(m): 4:09pm On Nov 12, 2013
This is a breakthrough. I will rather have HIV than have cancer. Cancer kills very fast but HIV can be curtailed. Magic Johnson has been living with the HIV virus for 23 years and still going strong. By the time HIV eventually gets a cure then cancer and HIV will be dead for good.

MacLovington: .

As against what many haters like to believe, most Nigerians in UK are gainfully employed. I know of a Naija guy keen to see the match but has a along theatre list that afternoon and an outpatient clinic next morning. I guess there are thousands more like that.

If they would engage in all manner of things except hard work and then gallivant about any Naija game and what not, you will be the first to crucify them and call them jobless.

I will go because I happen to have that afternoon off.
so, do these companies they work for close down during the Nothinghill carnival cos i see loads of Nigerians there.

Ok! So who do you think is the finest? Omotola? Genny? Who? grin
I watched the Maltina dance all and i thought she was beautiful but not WOW beautiful. If i thought she was beautiful to the extent of her being the most beautiful female celebrity then i would have opened a thread for her. Being the most beautiful celebrity in any country is a tall order let alone a nation as behemoth as Nigeria.

homesteady: So in other words you are trying to say that She is not fine shocked shocked
Do you know that this girl won Miss Black USA?
She is like 20times more pretty than kim!
I'm not saying she's not fine. I'm just saying that she's not sooo fine to consider her the prettiest. I think that's like an insult not just to Celebrities in Nigeria but also Nigerians at large cos celebrities represent some of the most beautiful Nigerians.

Tiwa is not beautiful but just a little pretty and has a nice body. She shouldn't even be talked about when Beauty or Prettiness is being discussed.

I don't think you understood what I was trying to say, if you did you'll find out that we are on the same page.
You should have presented your case in such a way that it will endear more fans to your opinion. You post made it seem like you were only interesting in protecting the president alone from insults.
PoliticsRe: Nairaland Bans People For Insulting A Member But Not The President by Afam4eva(m): 4:11pm On Nov 11, 2013
@OP
You started off on a wrong footing. What's soo special about the president that he should not be insulted but other public figures should? I think you should be clamouring against the use of insulting words on anybody ranging from Nairaland members, people's Parents, public figures. it can be achieved in the guise of "using fowl language". It used to be a rule on Nairaland but not anymore.
