Nigerian Senate uncovers cargoes loaded with cars, electronics abandoned for decade The Senate says it has discovered overtime cargoes worth billions of naira stacked at the Ikorodu Lighter Terminal, Lagos State, by the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) for not less than 10 years. The Chairman Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff, Hope Uzodinma, made the disclosure when briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday. He said that the containers were moved there by the NPA to decongest the Apapa Port. Mr. Uzodinma said the committee discovered the cargoes during its oversight visit to the terminal in Lagos. The senator said the containers contained valuables such as transformers, cars and electronics. The chairman expressed his disappointment over the non-implementation of the Act establishing the Nigeria Customs Service with regards to disposal of overtime cargoes. “To see these number of containers with very valuable items in our various sea ports and airports, not claimed for a period of over 10 years, is to say the least very disappointing. “This shows to some extent a sign of irresponsibility on the side of the authority. We are going to discuss with the hierarchy of the service. “We will ensure that the Act that established the Nigeria Customs Service, which has also prescribed a procedure for disposal of overtime goods and seized cargoes, is respected and complied with. “The only way to dispose these items or overtime cargoes is copiously captured in the Act and it is not going to be subjected to any further negotiation. “Whatever that is defined in the Act is what should be done. Our responsibility as lawmakers who made the law is to ensure that it is followed forthwith,’’ said Mr. Uzodinma. The senator said that with the global price of crude oil fluctuating on a daily basis, it was high time the Federal Government focused more on other sources of revenue. “We are talking of economic recession in the country but you can see how many hundreds of billions of items of value that are lying at the Ikorodu Terminal for the past 10 years. “What we saw at Volkswagen of Nigeria, Idiroko and Seme are not pleasant at all and now we are making another shocking discovery. “Government must begin to do things differently if we must get out of this recession,’’ he said. The lawmaker expressed the willingness of the 8th Senate to ensure that measures were put in place to take Nigeria out of recession. “Senate has woken up and this discovery is a product of our oversight activities. “When we show commitment, when we show patriotism, when we understand the meaning and relevance of national interest, our country will be better for it. “We cannot continue to rely on oil revenue. God has endowed this country with enormous national resources and it is left for us to manage it well and we don’t have a choice. “I think with the emergence of the President Buhari-led administration and with the change agenda, things must be done differently,’’ he said. However, Mr. Uzodinma decried the lack of routine promotion for personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service. He also decried the poor welfare package for the personnel in spite of their contribution to the development of the country. The senator said that some of the officers were subjected to hardship having to make do with make-shift- tent in the premises. “We are aware that for a long time, there has not been promotion in customs. “We are aware that the motivation is not seriously there. We are working with the Comptroller-General to ensure that the routine promotion commences immediately and the welfare package is strengthened. “We have been to the Customs barracks to see what is happening there. “We will sit and plan on how best to provide sufficient welfare package for men and women of the Nigerian Customs Service,’’ he said. Their wahala continues |
Chai, wetin Ali Modu Sheriff dey do PDP no good oh. It has become obvious that they cant just wish Sheriff away. They have to look for a way to pacify him and then elect a neutral person as the party chairman. |
Why was the full petition not uploaded? The OP is up to some mischief. A significant portion of the petition has been cut off. The OP did not allow us to properly digest the content of the petition of the Ali Modu Sherrif faction. The reasons cited for the petition started from Number 4. Patiot where is Numbers 1-3?? |
Chai, see money. They were just sharing money anyhow during that last election. It is good the way the current administration is putting them under the radar. Let the current INEC also collect money from this administration, when a new govt comes in, they will also deal with them. Simple |
Pidggin:You need to properly assess and consider the past before you can properly manage the future. I hope you saw that Buhari did not sack the service chiefs immediately. He properly got an history of boko haram from them before letting them go. The mistakes of the past will continue to be documented in books and speeches to guide the coming generation. All the mistakes and ills of past governments of Nigeria are well documented. In fact, they have all been used as research materials at one time or the other. GEJ will not be an exception. All his mistakes, ill-decisions and miscalculations will also be assessed for years to come. When PMB concludes his term in office, his own records will also be there for discussion and scrutiny for years to come. |
The truth hurts, but VP Osinbajo seems to be right. The way boko haram spiraled out of control under GEJ is mind boggling. Given that Yar'dua did not waste time in cutting them to size. Another confirmation that GEJ purposely left them to fester was in the way the military was now able to record some victories against them 6 weeks to the election. When GEJ realised that the boko haram issue was going to affect him at the polls as against being an advantage, it was then he gave a marching order to the military to push them back. And to the surprise of many, the military that has been loosing countless battles against boko haram for the past 2 years was now able to record victories again boko haram in 6 weeks. Something they have been unable to do in 2 years! Anybody that does not agree that this is fishy needs to have his/her brain examined. And we have also heard and seen documents where the fighter jets and other weapons they claimed they bought was never bought, and in some cases grounded and cannibalised equipment was delivered while the Army and Air force chiefs smiled to the banks. In many cases, the National Security Adviser used money meant to pursue a war to finance PDP election. Does this show seriousness and a commitment to defeat boko haram?? GEJ does not know strategic planning. He got it all wrong. He thought boko haram will destabilise the major places PMB will gain votes from. When it became obvious that the exact opposite is what was going to happen, that was when they panicked, postponed the elections and then properly mobilised the military to degrade the boko haram to an extent. |
eezeribe:If you build on road setback, be ready to face the consequences. If unscrupulous land sellers sold the land to you, the responsibility to ascertain the proper road setback from the ministry of works and lands is on you. No need of sentiments. |
kcnwaigbo:It seems you are ignorant about a lot of things. GEJ left more than a 100 bills already passed by the National Assembly behind without assenting them. Some have been passed as long as 2012. None of them have become law. None of them have become an Act, even though some have been passed by the National Assembly for the past 4yrs. GEJ did not even bother to inform them if he was assenting or withholding assent. He just left the bills unattended to. People are already lobbying PMB to assenting some of those bills and he doesn't have the time. I think he assented some few ones last year. |
Keballl:So appeal court is siting and you guys are wailing up and down. Oga sit your ass down and await the ruling of the appeal court. Stop littering the cyberspace with wailings. |
Keballl:You are the one who seems pained. Why bringing sentiments into a purely legal issue. It's not today that Appeal court has been overturning the judgement of a High court. It's not a big deal. Supreme court also regularly overturns the judgements of the Appeal court. It's not new. Instead of whining and making noise online, you guys should go and appeal that judgement. It's as simple as that. Eyitayo Jegede is a SAN, he should know this. I just don't understand why they always go to another high court to counter Okon Abang's judgement instead of going to the appeal court. Everybody, every layman knows a high court cannot counter the judgement of another high court. |
eyeview:I already posted this on the other thread. Is INEC not bound to obey a consequential order of a competent court of law??It as simple as I expressed above. INEC is simply obeying a court order. If Appeal court rules tomorrow affirming Jegede, INEC will replace Jimoh Ibrahim's name. It is only a court that can decide if Ibrahim was not validly selected as a candidate. In the absence of any other superior court judgment, INEC will obey the subsisting judgement. The implication of Justice Okon Abang's judgement is simply that INEC was wrong not to witness the primary where Ibrahim emerged. That in itself may not nullify the process except if a competent court judgment rules thereof. Let them appeal the Judgment of Okon Abang speedily and also ask the appeal court for accelerated hearing. You can ask for accelerated hearing on high profile cases. |
eyeview:Which legal department? You guys formed a press release from your rooms and you are calling it INEC legal department memo. Why not post the memo itself if indeed the person that wrote that trash had access to it. Post the memo itself for validity. Otherwise, all these are speculations and fictional conjectures. |
IsThisChange:Is INEC now different from INEC legal department? Are you a member of INEC legal department to know their deliberation?? INEC is not INEC without its legal department and other departments. The legal department and other departments is what makes up INEC. Stop misinforming the public. Is INEC not bound to obey a consequential order of a competent court of law?? There is actually no big deal here, all they have to do is to go to a higher court to prove their case. If a higher court rules in their favour, INEC will also follow that ruling. If the case proceeds to Supreme court and they also give their ruling, INEC will also simply obey that ruling. INEC is a 'zombie' to a competent court judgment. Justice Okon Abang has always been ruling in favour of Sherrif faction since the beginning of these their wahala. What I don't understand is why they have not gone to a higher court to vacate any of those his rulings all these while. Justice Okon Abang cannot rule against himself. Any case brought to him as regards PDP faction wahala, he will always rule in favour of Sheriff to maintain consistency in his judgements as he has earlier done. It's only a higher court that can rule against him and as such compel him to rule in like manner in similar cases. |
Keballl:Alright, you that is not confused, I don hear. GEJ is already history now, no point going back and forth, no time sef. |
Keballl:The circumstances is different now. Eventhough majority of people did not know Barth before he was appointed, GEJ will definitely know that he has vested interest in that industry, yet he went ahead and appointed him. Nobody complained when he was appointed, or let me say majority did not complain. Now after the man was appointed and everybody started seeing visible changes in the industry chiefly due to his management acumen; it was that time GEJ deemed it fit to fire him, claiming he has vested interest. Why change the winning team in the middle of a crucial competition?? That move by Jona was a wrong move, and majority was right in criticising the sack as later events even vindicated the people that questioned the sack as Barth Nnaji's visible achievements nose-dived after his exit. Assuming GEJ left that man in the saddle, the power situation would have been better today. |
kahal29:Although Barth Nnaji is sound and up to the task but appointing him to that position will be a mistake. Barth is an operator in that industry, an active one sef. You cannot make an operator the Head of the regulatory Agency. There is bound to be conflict of interest. He will definitely dance more to the tunes of the. Industry players and not the consumers. That is part of the problem we are always having with our CBN governors. We should not start making the same mistake in our ailing power industry. |
bbbabes:It seems it's you that is stupid and not the govt. Who told u Nigeria does not import rice? Why do some of you guys run your mouth without having your facts? 60-65% of rice we are consuming is being imported. The govt only banned rice importation through the borders. Rice is still being imported through the ports for your information. |
Is the spokesman nameless? All these fake news sef. APC does not have a spokesman presently. |
Happy birthday tonyebarcanista. God bless u. |
Smithkafors:The man is doing quite well. He has been attracting funding and travelling up and down making himself physically available for agricultural programs. |

Yes na, carry your negative thinking outta here. |
Sensie:Pessimist enemy of the nation. If Anambra and Ebonyi rice can succeed in feeding only their states 100%, then that is a success! This success will spurn the CBN to release more money to them for investment and from there, the entire SE can achieve rice production sustainability which can even still spill to other parts of the country. Don't come and infect us here with your negative thinking abeg. |
This is good! Let the CBN loan the funds in the TSA to farmers. This will go a long way in supporting the economy than the erstwhile practice of commercial banks loaning it for importers to import things we can produce here and invariably killing off the local production. Commercial banks in Nigeria has over time refused to invest in the real sectors of the economy. Preferring to get bigger margins at low risk investments. Now that govt funds has been removed from them, a lot of them are totally confused and bereft of ideas to move their businesses into earlier profit margins. Let the CBN loan the cash in the TSA directly to Agricultural projects and to Manufacturers Association of Nigeria through the Bank of Industry. It will go a long way in reducing our import bills and as such reduce the pressure on the naira. This is to be followed up by strict enforcement of policies and border controls. Any corrupt customs officer seeking to sabotage govt policies due to personal greed should be shown the door! Citizens should be encouraged and even given incentives to carry out whistle blowing on corrupt customs and CBN officials. If we can successfully limit rice imports, and then reduce fuel imports by the time Dangote refinery and others come up, our naira will get out of this mess it has found itself. |
comshots:Oga keep quiet! Ethnic cleansing my foot. You agreed no names were published, yet you are still alleging ethnic cleansing. Failures always resort to excuses of religious/ethnic bigotry. This is one of the most corrupt agencies of govt committing economic crimes against the nation and its policies. Instead of you to be happy for this bold move, you are talking nonsense. Everybody knows customs are highly corrupt, and everybody also know they have been operating unhindered since God knows. This is a good move that should tell the other guys that we have a new sheriff in town. The corruption in customs is not isolatary, it is supported and encouraged by corrupt individuals seeking to circumvent the law and due process, so it won't be surprising to see some people looking for avenue to wail for their crooked friends in customs. |
sanfranka2:You guys better maintain a stance. Is it that there was no kidnap at all or there was kidnap but no rescued 21 girls? Today you'll say no kidnap. Tomorrow you'll say, one of the girls already escaped in 2014, showing us a blurred picture without a reference to where u got the picture from. |
Nonsense incomplete report, and some people are already taking it as the absolute truth. Something is definitely wrong with the thinking faculty of some people. Now it is Aisha Buhari's friend? Lol. Eventhough Buhari has told them where they belong, that they don't belong to dictating who he appoints to offices. Yet, some people believes Aisha Buhari's friend is capable of influencing the emergence of 2 FAAN directors. Abi, no be only 2 directors that has been announced? |
Some people are petty. They think it is when they repeat and repeat the same arguments that it will be regarded as the truth. |
Conspiracy theorists would soon bombard this thread with their incredulous assertions. I hope the killer driver is in detention? RIP to the dead. |
Sibrah:The project was enmeshed in a lot of legal issues; and he played a major role in the resolution of those issues. |
CSTR13:It seems you were deaf and dumb when the previous govt was frustrating this man's investment right? Fashola has come now to help sort out all the knotty issues and you have suddenly remembered to give Berth Nnaji alone the accolades. Where were you when Jona and his wife Patience frustrated the man's investment due to vested interest of another party (Emeka Offor)?? |
Good work Fashola. |
