PoliticsRe: Why Have Nigerians Abandoned Marina District In Lagos? by agabusta: 2:28pm On Dec 08, 2020
onegig:
1. It is simple security or lives and businesses.

I dare anyone of you to walk around Marina past 7pm. I can't even drive on Broad street in the evening for fear of been attacked. A colleague's car windows was smashed with stones on that street and there are numerous tales of robbery on the Apongbon axis during rush hour traffic or early mornings. Regular gang fights happen on a steady basis.

It's proximity to Isale Eko and the littany of touts, thugs, shanties, slums and rowdy markets around the area makes it very hard to justify investment by blue chip companies. If UBA, First Bank or even Sterling would have their ways they would gladly relocate to VI or Ikoyi in an instant.

I walk and drive around VI at 12am or 1am . I dare not do that in Marina.

Investment thrives in areas of relative peace.

2. Accessibility of the roads.

Road networks are literally blocked around with all manner of wears by petty traders and rickety buses.

Try getting round Marina and come tell your story. Parking in Marina is one of the hardest things you can attempt. From touts extorting you in unauthorized parking spots to inefficient and unavailable car parks.

I wouldn't want to setup a meeting and select Marina ever for a client. So why would you as a developer want to build new structures there?
This is the main reason! I am surprised it took so long to come across such a comment.

Yea, I've been eagerly awaiting when Dangote builds his headquarters (he has the cash to build something truly spectacular). Total ENP is also planning a building called "La Definition" in Eko Atlantic to house its employees. Facebook is planning its HQ in Ikoyi I think, but it hasn't been announced yet. Folorunsho's Famfa oil is also building in Ikoyi.

Some of the indigenous oil companies such as Amni Oil have decided to go to Eko Atlantic instead of Marina. Here is the prototype of their tower. It is right next to Alpha 1. Construction expected to start in 2021.
Dangote is already building a structure in Ikoyi, close to that marriage registry.

God bless Sanwo-Olu, this are some of the many Fashola project that fat cow Ambode totally abandoned during his tenor. The fat fool Ambode completely abandoned all project initiated by Fashola including the Lagos Badagry expressway, because of the issue they both had when Fash was Governor and the fat idiot was Accountant-General for Lagos State. Ambode is the reason why a lot of Lagosians are suffering today due to bad roads and poor public amenities...
Very true. When I tell people this, they always disagree because of their hatred for Tinubu. They'll be heaping all the blame for Ambode's failure on Tinubu.

Perfectly understand your point.. But the fact is even with this system adopted in Nigeria, it wouldnt change much as the Northern electoral college will still collectively vote whoever they've made up their mind to vote with one mind becos they are more united in purpose than the southerners which we all know will have lots of splits (as we be oversabi people).. Its only if they (the north) dont have the numbers in electoral colleges that things might be different which leads me to this question.. What determines the number of electoral colleges a states has? Its population?? Or what exactly...?
Yes, population and ultimately, representation at the legislature.

The state electors is gotten by adding: the number of their representatives at House of Representatives and the Senate.

An exception to this is the capital, which is arbitrarily assigned the number of electors of the smallest state.

To use this system in Nigeria, the battle will start with getting accurate census figures.

thats true but Lagos is the same as Kano so the millions million hits wouldn't have effect.
The current system of popular votes is of more advantage to Lagos because Lagos will be delivering all its big numbers directly to the election.

In that case, either/all the participants in the election will get a piece of all the votes in Lagos. Only one participant will get all Lagos electoral votes in the option of electoral college.

Also, If we are going the electoral college way based on current realities (nos of Representatives at NASS), the impact of Lagos on elections will be seriously eroded as Lagos has less representation at NASS than Kano.

I personally believe our current system is better suited for our political environment than the electoral college option.

You're exaggerating righthuh 50 what?? no state in America even have up to 50 electoral college votes including the big states like New York, California, Texas etc. Yes most northern states will have a higher electoral voters but it won't be that much and it can be countered if a candidate is able to win a greater number of states
California has 55 electors.

Trump will win. All that is happening now is just to expose the fraud and those behind it in the electoral system... Mind you, the Homeland Security put watermarks on valid ballots!!! So they can identify the valid ballots from the fake ones!! Trump is a genius for coming up with such an idea!!! Somewhere in Virginia, 100,000 votes belonging to Trump were discovered not to be counted. A lot would be revealed in the coming days but I'm sure Trump will win!!!
Homeland security how?

Did you think the ballots used in this election are centrally produced and distributed?

Electoral College is too alien and complex for Nigerians to understand so I will break it down in local context for them to understand in simple terms using Nigeria regions as an example.

Instead of the present system of presidential elections where the Kardashians of the North will just release astronomical figures to negate electoral lead to miraculously swing victory the way of their preferred candidate, they will have a fixed number of Electoral College votes determined by their number of federal representatives.

So if Kano like, let them let cows and infants votes and churn out 10 million votes, all their preferred candidate will get is the Electoral College votes of the state.

If I am being honest, this system would have been perfect for a multi-ethnic large population country like Nigeria.
Kano with its large population will still have more electors than other states.

my brother this is not true. It's like you don't know how College system of voting work.
I know sir. But you obviously don't know. Read this my previous comment on the matter for more enlightenment.

agabusta:
The US Presidential election is by what 'they' call an Electoral College and not solely through the popular votes.

Each state has electors which is arrived at by adding the number of their Representatives in the Senate and the House of Rep. An exception is their capital DC, which has 3 electors. The total number of electors is 538.

Now ideally, the popular winner of a state takes all the electors for that state except for two states which has a separate rule. A number of posts on this thread already mentioned that.

The formal process where the 538 electors cast their votes takes place next month.

But irrespective of that, if the popular winner of the different states are known/declared, it is easy to deduce the overall winner of the electoral college, even though they are yet to formally cast their vote since electors in 48 states (out of 50) are to vote for the winner of their states

Nigeria needs to copy this system.

With electoral college if u like have a population of 10m your state voting power is almost same with a state with a population of 3million
No sir. Read again to understand.

States with high population will still have higher electoral college. Though their influence will reduce a bit.

For example, if we are to use this system in Nigeria, Kano will have 27 electors while Ebonyi will have 9 electors.

It would make the elections too tensed at the states. As the person who wins a state will take all the electors for that state.
Foreign AffairsRe: United States Electoral College Explained by agabusta:

This is a case of minority deciding for majority....I wonder what led to such system.
The majority will still decide. Since the places with high population usually have higher electoral college votes.

What it does is just to reduce to a small extent the weight of the places with higher population and seeks to give a spread.

There is also an attempt to give a spread in Nigeria's presidential electoral system with the 1/4 votes in 2/3rd states.
Foreign AffairsRe: United States Electoral College Explained by agabusta:

Useless explanation from a Nigerian local champion- Maria Ude.

Electoral college is a form of allocation of numbers backed by the constitution to each state in America usually determined by the resident state population. Some states have 3, 4, 10, 20, 30, etc. depending on the residency population.

Like California has the highest electoral votes, followed by Texas. Politically, some states are more important to political parties than others.

For instance, Wyoming, DC, Delaware, North & South Carolina have the least electoral votes, so politically speaking an American politician gives more attention to California, Texas and other states with high electoral votes, than states with least electoral votes.

See the way the electoral votes are classified.
Why are you calling the OP, a local champion. Where's the difference in the info you shared??

Una too like oversabi

You obviously did not read the article. It is not the governors that tell the electors who to vote for. It is whoever wins the majority vote for that state they'll vote for. Except in the case of two states.
