A sweeter way of saying ''Iron sharpen iron''. Good advice

Even if the poster knows it or not, he too avoids liabilities like a plague. It's a natural human response that is done subconsciously. Humans by nature are merchants behaviorally, that is, ''trade-by-barter'' is the fundamental coding that underpins human relationships.

If people start asking themselves basic questions like ''What do I bring to the table/into his life'', then connecting and rolling with other great people becomes easy.

As wretched as an Almajiri or touts are, they can at least give one vote. Politicians will beg them, dash them bags of rice, promise, and lie to them just to secure their vote. That's trade by barter. A noodle for your vote lol.

Also, it makes it easier not to fear being dumped, or rejected, because you also know that they will miss something when they decide to leave. When you are valuable, you respect yourself more. A greedy selfish mindset makes you disposable.

It is more blessed to give than to receive.' Acts 20.35.
I'm always happy to read your posts. Thank you.

What I can deduce is:
1. Develop yourself to have value.
2. Be willing to offer value to people in exchange for value from them.

But Sir, what do you have to say in a situation where the people you need value from are all better than you and whatever value you're bringing, they already have easy access to it without needing you?

Last Christmas, during the hols my kid sis who is 21 said I should mind the way I talk to her if not I won't like the way she would respond. I asked her what did you say?she said "I heard her right".
If not for my Dad I for show her how I bathed and wore her diapers before dropping her off at school. It was serious and I was really pissed.
You too want to be trash talking your sister just because you're older, forgetting she's an adult like you.

Her manner of speaking to you was rude but it is excusable if she has respectfully spoken to you about it countless times without you budging.

Na so. one barged into my office and started looking for what was not lost, I sent him away like a dog and before you say "jack" he sent a mail to the MD that I didn't allow him access to what he needed to work with. Unfortunately, MD redirected the mail to me for "attention" grin. He was promptly given a 2-week working suspension for insubordination meaning that he would be coming to work wasting his transport fare and still will get half pay for that month. I initially thought he'll resign ni but alaye begged his life out.
If this is true then you and your MD need to learn industrial relations.
I'm sure the "barge in" you said was probably because he didn't greet you.

And why will you chase him out like a dog because he was trying to look for what he needed to work with?
He lodged a formal complaint which was a very ethical move and was given a working suspension.
What exactly was the insubordination?

ProgrammingRe: Transition To Tech, It's Worth It! by Albertone(m): 2:41pm On Feb 20, 2024
Ayinke93:
I created this thread to encourage someone going through the pain of transitioning to tech at the moment and to remind them that they are making a decision their future self will thank you for. Sometimes in June last year, I resigned from my job at a Nigerian bank to take up a 30K internship as a software developer. To be honest, that's easily the best decision I've made in my entire life. This month I got offers worth more than 5 times what I was earning at the bank after applying for jobs for just about 2 weeks. and I have not even spent up to a year in the industry. I'm going to outline some of the steps I took below:

1. If possible, get an internship: I know this can be difficult, but trust me, the experience accelerated my learning. One thing that helped with the two internships I got within the period I started was networking. Tell everybody you know about your plans, you don't know who might be willing to help.

2. Intense focus: I stayed off social media for over 6 months during the period I was learning. Trust me, this is not the time for distractions and frivolous activities.

3. Practice and build projects: I can’t emphasize this enough. Build projects and put them on your GitHub because some recruiters check your git. In one job I got, the interviewer was very excited about one web scraping project I did in my very early days. Sincerely, I had no idea that the project could help me in any way. So please, build and push to GitHub every time.

4. Redo your resume and LinkedIn: You want your resume to reflect that you've been working in tech. Nobody cares about the customer service job you did in 2015. Also, LinkedIn is the best place to get jobs, and I feel so many people underutilize it.

5. Get a mentor: to be honest, I couldn't have gotten anywhere without the solid mentorship around me. You need to have someone you look up to in this industry because they have more experience than you and the guide will take you far. Just show interest, be teachable, be hardworking and let your mentor see that you are motivated. You'll be surprised at how kind people are.

6. Network! Network! Network!: see I can't overemphasize this. you need people to grow. I surrounded myself with tech people, and I can't count the number of times random things I picked from conversations came up in my interviews.

7. Stay curious and stay motivated. The sky is the starting point.

Had to add in number 8. A lot of people talk about looking for jobs on LinkedIn and only sprinkle 1 or 2 applications here and there and get discouraged. Note that I applied to over 200 jobs in 2 weeks and got less than five call backs and 2 offers. Just calculate the success margin. In the end, it's a game of numbers. Keep grinding and grind hard.

Lastly, I’m not going to lie, transitioning to tech will test your sanity and I mean that with all seriousness. This is a link to a thread I created in December; https://www.nairaland.com/6887200/learning-code-hard,  but trust me, it’s worth it. Rooting for you all!
Hello. I just came across your post and it's awesomely put together.
Just a few newbie questions:

1. How do we deal with internship requirements that are usually like a full job requirement?
I saw an internship role that required at least 2 years of experience, working with technologies that I haven't even heard of.

2. Can you talk about the issue of sustenance while learning to code?
I feel like picking up another skill(maybe copywriting) to sustain me before I become job ready. But it seems that will take away the time I have to learn coding.

3. How can we network? I am an indoor guy with no social skills. Can online networking suffice? If yes, how?

Nairaland GeneralOAU Students Knock FG Over Rising Economic Hardship, Insecurity by Albertone(op): 4:55pm On Feb 18, 2024
The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Great Ife Students’ Union, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, have attacked the Federal Government over the rising economic challenges facing the country.

The students in a statement signed by the leadership of the SRC on Sunday, said the staggering inflation rate of 29.9%, the highest since May 1996, coupled with the daily devaluation of the Naira to an alarming exchange rate of #1590 per dollar in the parallel market, reflects the sheer negligence and incompetence of the government.

“This alarming economic downturn has led to an unbearable cost of living, making it increasingly difficult for the average Nigerian to afford basic necessities.

“Furthermore, the rampant cases of insecurity, including kidnapping and banditry, have reached unprecedented levels, instilling fear and apprehension in the hearts of citizens across the nation. The government’s failure to prioritize the safety and security of its people is utterly unacceptable and cannot be tolerated any longer,” part of the statement read.

Speaking on neglect of the education sector, the students argued that the insufficient budget allocations and underfunding of tertiary institutions is a challenge to education development in the country.

“It’s germane to re-emphasise how the high cost of governance, coupled with misplaced priorities and selfish policies, further complicates the suffering of the Nigerian populace. The Great Ife Students’ Union SRC vehemently condemns these actions and calls on the government to prioritise the welfare of its citizens.

“It is imperative that the government takes immediate and decisive action to address these pressing issues before they spiral out of control. We urge the authorities to implement practical solutions such as diversifying the economy to reduce dependency on crude oil, and reopening borders to facilitate the abundant supply of essential commodities like rice, wheat, and milk.

The closure of borders has only exacerbated our woes, resulting in a scarcity of goods and a surge in prices.

“Furthermore, the subsidy removed should be reinvested in empowering more Nigerians or increasing the minimum wage to ensure that all citizens can enjoy a decent standard of living. The Great Ife Students’ Union implores the Federal Government to heed our cry and take immediate action to address the economic crisis and insecurity plaguing our nation. Failure to do so will only lead to imminent nationwide revolution by the citizens.”

this life ehn, to get anything worthwhile u most likely will pay a price. Its now left for you on this journey to decide what price you want to pay, and sincerely that is a personal decision. Personally I would not want to have kids with someone I would divorce, especially in the US where child support is crazy(its beyond money).
If you are not married, why not hold on/out for someone you really like and can build a family/home with. ANd if you are married already, just maybe there are other PRICES u can pay to get what you desire.
The emboldened would have been the best if not that 1. The one you love might be reluctant to take things serious with you because you don't have your papers yet. 2. Time is running out and you may have to vacate the US before seeing the one willing to settle with you.

One has to pay a price truly.

But like others have adviced you, you are actually better off sharpening your interaction skills with women, learning to open up and be receptive to women of different culture because marriage is the surest. The earlier you get your green card the better, because it's after you get your green card you can start living your American dreams properly. You begin to use government and financial services support to conquer and expand.
Having kids with whom you're still going to divorce might be daunting.
Or is there a way the man can secretly prevent pregnancy for her?

PoliticsRe: Allegations Of Tribalism Against Me & Nairaland by Albertone(m): 1:27pm On Dec 30, 2023
Seun:
I would like to address the allegations on Twitter about tribalism on Nairaland or that I am some kind of tribalist, because I was told that not addressing them means that they are true.

The more extreme variants of that claim are being pushed primarily by south-eastern tribalists who feel that south-western tribalists have the upper hand on Nairaland in their battles with each other.

Whenever they are banned after breaking rule 2 of Nairaland, they will go back to Twitter to lament about how Nairaland is against their tribe and how I'm personally working against them.

I urge you to disregard any accusation against me or against Nairaland if the accusers cannot prevent hard evidence to support their claims. These people make things up, and people just believe them.

For avoidance of doubt, I have always been a supporter and admirer of south-eastern people. I will never have any tribalistic bone in my body. I am a human who views people as humans first.

The micro-kernel of truth in the mountain of lies is that Nairaland is under-staffed. The staff I have do not moderate as efficiently as I want them to. They also struggle with following my instructions.

So if you go to Nairaland looking for tribalism, you will find it in certain areas, just as you will if you search Twitter for tribalism, because of people whose main business online is tribal trolling.

However, I want Nairaland to be better than Twitter. I want to improve the consistency of moderation on Nairaland. For this reason, I am in the process of recruiting more people to help.
If you need more hands, you can recruit me.

I have experience in community moderation in a Web 3 space.
Having spent close to 9 years on this Forum(2015 till date), I certainly know my way around Nairaland to do the job.

I'm currently learning Frontend Web Development if you can put me in the tech side to gain knowledge and experience.

Extreme ignorance. They think the afro they see in black themed movies is what the natural hair of most Nigerian women look like? Hahaha!

Some go be like the woman dey mad!

I saw shege in the hands of my natural hair. I spent money. Was always visiting natural hair salons. They are more expensive than the average hairdresser too. I could never leave it without keeping it in a style. Even if it cornrows. I also had to change my cornrows more frequently.

I tried short hair. That one is another money pit. Unlike men that see their barbers at every corner for N1000. Female barbers are high end professionals that the average 100k earning woman cannot afford. My barber was so proud and rude.

Let me not talk about the headache from touching and combing my hair everyday. My face would be red. Even my arms were hurting from always being up to style the hair every morning.

Abeg, they should go look for it on their mother's head. I done buy wig this month after a long time before I die for PanAfrican movement. grin grin grin
Nigeria being a hot country, the kind of odour that oozes out when some ladies remove their wigs is poisonous.

Not everyone has access to AC so the heat brings discomfort. I've seen countless ladies holding their wigs in their hands while walking in hot sun.

Also, there are health risks associated with using wigs. Some got scalp issues from that.

Finally, the cost of purchasing and maintaining a wig is more expensive than the cost of making your hair. Unless you're using an "understanding girlfriend wig" or your salon na kingsway grin

I only agree on the discomfort your natural hair brings when styling. But then, to each his or her own.

Like I stated, you’ll need to pursue a certification in an audit related field. Mostly like CIA (certified internal audit or) if you are interested in financial audit. CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor) if you’re interested in IT Audits. The consulting part of it is something you learn an and engage in during reviews and external engagements. Alternatively look out for trainee programmes, which is usually a yearly recruitment drive. I don’t know how it works in Nigeria, but where I am abroad most audit companies use that to recruit fresh graduates.
Thank you.
CareerRe: Can I Still Work In PWC Or Any Of The BIG 4 by Albertone(m):
Muyiii:
Firstly, it is very possible. However, you do know the BiG 4s ie. PWC, KPMG, Deloitte & Ernst & Young are all into Auditing (IT & Financial). So if you’re background and current role isn’t related to that, then you’ll need to embark on becoming one. Either by getting certified in CISA or CIA. Depending whether you want to chose IT or financial audit.

Secondly, unless you will be taking an unrelated audit role like what you’re currently doing, then it’s possible.
Please what do I need for entry level management consulting?
