tensazangetsu20: Finance is 100 times harder to break into than tech. I disagree. In finance, meeting the requirements for entry level roles is easier. Once you meet the requirements, the rest is how you perform at the screening. Requirements like: Minimum of 2:1 in any field of study, less than age 27/28/29 etc. But for tech, entry level role requirements now was experienced hire requirements previously. Why will any company be requesting 3-5 YOE for a junior dev role? I swear I saw an internship position in tech requiring 1-2 YOE. WTF!! |

MT: Are you into tech and how long have you been?
For over 1k to apply for a tech job doesn't mean it's saturated. Lot of them are "wannabes".
Majority of those who apply for a job are not fit . Individuals that still focus on syntax of a language, individuals that uses "class" but doesn't know what it does, individuals that don't know why and when to use "abstract class" as against "interface", individuals that have academic knowledge of "abstraction" and "polymorphism" etc.
If you want to be a software engineer, you need to see programming language like a human language. Some humans speak and write English like a toddler while some do like Shakespeare.
There lies your difference.
The benchmark you used to support your case was very faulty. Out of the more than 1k applications, do you think the hiring managers have time to go through all? Note that they may want to hire just 5 devs. |

UyaiIncomparabl: LMAO.
Why did you drop though? That was your 50% sure bet of going up the zenith. It's a tough market that requires high level skills and years of experience. Gone are the days of entry level jobs. Even internships are so scarce. Also, no hope of being able to earn within 1 year of learning. If I don't earn, how can I learn? Tech bro gats to chop na. The abroad I want to go to, those there are complaining that they send 300+ applications and got less than 10 interviews. Nigeria here, you can't even see up to 50 openings to apply to. |

It will obviously be easier to understand concepts for people in related field, but you can do it.
I know of a Law graduate that had 2:1 at both his university and at law school. He wrote and passed each CFA levels in one sitting(he didn't fail any of the levels) while working as an investment banking analyst.
I know countless people from Sciences and Art backgrounds that wrote and passed ICAN and are now with the big 4 accounting firms.

MT: Hogwash article.
Companies are actively recruiting for experienced hire and newbie who has lot of potentials.
You wont see SKILLED tech guy leaving IT for traditional industries.
There are so many moving parts in IT and you need to be well grounded and see how they influence each other.
I do not know where this op sees this false article. Genuine IT dudes are selling like hot cakes. Gone are the days of newbies with potentials easily getting recruited. Which newbie can compete against people with > 5 years of work experience? Even in the US where a lot of opportunities abound, some computer science grads with experience send about 300+ applications and get less than 10 interviews. How many roles are open in Nigeria? |

Nairaland General › Re: Is It Too Late To Know How To Do This As A Young Man Like Me? by Albertone(m): 10:59am On Mar 11, 2024 |
pansophist: ''intent'' and ''proportionality'' are the measures that are used to determine if the value a person brings should be accepted.
For example, if you rescue a boy who fell inside a well, will you be angry at the boy if he brings a biscuit to you the next day as an appreciation? Of course not.
You will smile and be happy, because you know it's coming from a good place (intention), and a biscuit is what the boy can afford (proportionality).
But if the same boy brought a chicken bone that he ate, you will be angry and feel insulted. You won't accept it, and you will further question the boy's intention for such a gift that could pass as an insult.
A good example of this is the biblical story called ''the widow's offering'' (Marke 12-41-44). Jesus told his disciples that the widow gave more than the rich, even though she gave the smallest because it was all she had (exceeding proportionality), and came from a good place (intent).
Another one is the story of Cain and Abel. God appreciated Abel's sacrifice because it came from a good place (intent) and he gave the best of his farm harvest (exceeding proportionality). Unlike his brother Cain, who gave God a sacrifice that he would have disposed of anyway.
I hope I am clear enough. I can understand if you are not religious, but biblical stories are just easy for me to pass a point. I read the bible from Genesis to Revelation, and I love many of the stories inside.
So as I was saying, just because Dangote has more bilions than you doesn't mean you cannot give him a gift because people always judge by proportionality and intent. It is you, the giver, that is in the spotlight, and you can't give what you don't have.
Conversely, if Dangote gives you 20k naira, then reject the gift. Don't collect it and be angry that Dangote, a billionaire insulted you by giving you 5k.
Also, the receiver always retains the right of rejection. If after your assessment, you think someone's gift doesn't befits you, then politely reject it. You can't be angry at me because I insulted you by giving you dog food. Why you chop am?
God didn't accept the gift of Cain because God considers it unworthy. There was a post that made the frontpage a few days ago, where a man was angry that his long-term friend that lived in the US for over a decade gave him just 20k Naira.
But where I faulted him is the fact that he accepted the money, and then angry. That's wrong, and also a betrayal of one's word. Your words and actions should always match.
Don't accept gifts that you consider not good enough. And if you will accept it, then appreciate it. That is consistency. Words on Marble! You've actually changed how I view offering and receiving value. Will keep this in mind, thank you. |
