Why not install redhat or any other popular linux distro. Secondly, you should read the documentation on the distro website. Learning unix/linux is actually a trivial process. Try the following distro

1. fedora - fedoraproject.org
2. centos - centos.org
3. debian - debian.org

The 'hosts' file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc acts like a local DNS, it basically maps the local loopback interface 127.0.0.1 to any name. This means that you can direct any hostname or domain prefix to your loopback interface.

This is useful in blocking sites i.e malware sites, unwanted ads etc. That been said, there are other efficient ways in tackling this same problem. In a client-server evironment, the best way is to employ some proxy server setup. Squid proxy server is excellent at doing this - You can block sites or IPs and even viruses and the good thing is that it is free. When used with linux iptables, you can create simple ingress rules that can make your network virus free.

Also, running a local DNS can also solve this problem, you can create views that can allow your local client see different sites based on were they are coming from. Check the BIND manual for more details.

As a lover of open-source, I will recommend http://www.clamwin.com/, it is an excellent project and of course - free.

There is no difference btw politics and religion in Islam. I think we should apply the very same rules to muslims that live in christian states. No muslim should read or touch the bible either, otherwise we will do the same thing they do to christians.
