Basher8583: Don't mind that girl jor. Lesson one. People that struggle to make legit money dont flaunt it publicly. Have you ever seen Dangote, mike adenuga or Otedola flaunt thier wealth online? Again if forex and bitcoin are her gold nuggets why tell everyone. Yoruba people used to say "when your food is done you silently eat it lest everyone will join you and you wont have enough"
The girl is based in PH and she is using a car with an Abuja license plate. Haba She was only trying to encourage others and her students to never give up by sharing her story online! As of 2016 she was jobless while also studying for her Ph.D... and she publicly held a "job wanted" cardboard in PH in 2016. Her story went viral and folks came to her aid and she went into online trading and she also started training others. As of January 2021, she had already become a millionaire and built a house worth N75m at just 31 years of age. I only got to know of this young lady two days ago from a Lagos-based millionaire acquaintance of mine of Yoruba descent who personally knows this PH-based lady. It was while I was doing some further due dilligence on her that this NL thread popped up in the search engine results. Hope this helps. |

Elkiko: LIST OF NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES THAT OFFERS B.SC AND/OR MSC PSYCHOLOGY Compiled By Christopher Soji Okadonye
Psychology as a discipline is still relatively young when compared with other disciplines. Psychology is a social science course. Social science is basically concerned with the study of human behavior.
Economics is concern with human behavior in relation to consumption, production and distribution of goods and services.
Political science is concern with the study of human behavior in relation to governance.
Sociology is basically concern with the study of human behavior in group.
Psychology is simply the study human behavior in relation to mental processes.
However, the discipline of Psychology in Nigeria is still at the primary stage. This is evident in the number of universities in Nigeria that offers psychology in undergraduate or postgraduate level. Based research, Nigeria has one hundred and fifty two (152) accredited universities as at June 2017. And out of these, only 37 offers Psychology (General). Although, some universities offer Educational Psychology. They include: Ibrahim badamasi university lapai, Ahmadu bello university Zaria, kwara state university Ilorin, University Port Harcourt and Tansian University. But they are under the faulty of Education in the respective universities. In a very unique case, University of Benin do not offer psychology but they offer only Clinical Psychology in MSC level but under medical science/college and under the department of Mental Health.
Here is the list: 1. Adekunle Ajasian University Akungha, Ondo State. 2. Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. 3. Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma, Edo State. 4. Baze University Kurchigoro-Abuja, FCT 5. Benue State University Makurdi, Benue State 6. Caritas University Enugu, Enugu State 7. Chrisland University Owode, Ogun State 8. Similarly, of the 44 State Universities, only 13 offers Psychology, representing only 30%. Private universities at as the compilation of the work is numbered 68. Pavore9: If one most get their bearing in the field of Psychology, he or she must go on for postgraduate studies and preferably outside Nigeria.
Based on experience of friends who are counselling psychologists if one goes on to specialize in the field of child and adolescent therapy and set up a private practice in a place like Lagos, I tell you clientele will not be an issue as high end private schools will sought the person out to psycho-educate their teachers on how to effectively relate with their students, Parents who are frustrated over their relationship with their young ones need the services of the Professional, young ones with maladaptive behaviours need the service also.
Psychotherapists charge per hour, at least here in Nairobi the minimum is about N10,000 for one-on-one therapy.

feldido: The Department of Defense announced on Friday that it is investing $100 million in a drone base located in Agadez, in central Niger. The base will serve as a central surveillance hub in the fight against both Boko Haram and roaming militant groups linked to al Qaeda.
"At the request of, and in close coordination with, the Government of Niger, United States Africa Command is establishing a temporary, expeditionary cooperative security location in Agadez, Niger," a US Africa Command spokesperson told Reuters via email. "Agadez is an ideal, central location to enable ISR collection (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) to face the security threat across the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin region."
The US already has a military presence in both Agadez and the national capital, Niamey. With the establishment of this new drone base, which is located adjacent to an existing US airfield, those capital forces will likely transition to Agadez, centralizing America's ISR (Intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) efforts in the region. Any intel gathered by these drones will be shared among America's regional partners including Nigeria, Chad and Mali.

Pic credit: https://www.selahafrik.com/2018/11/folorunsho-alakija-building-tower/ Wow! The 22-storey iconic highrise will further change the skyline of Ikoyi Island for good. That's a savvy Ijebu woman from the wealthy Ogbara family who are indigenes of Ikorodu, Lagos State. I first heard of Mrs. Folorunso Alakija in the 1980s after she left the banking sector (as a top staff of IMB, Victoria Island, Lagos) and established the hugely popular Supreme Stitches in Lagos that had a lot of the elite as clients. She then bidded for the very risky deep offshore oil blocks with her foreign partners in the early 1990s and won. The late High Chief Lulu Briggs, Arthur Eze, Indimi, Kase Lawal of CAMAC, Mike Adenuga, MKO Abiola, etc, all bidded at the same time with Alakija for deep offshore oil blocks. Some struck oil while others failed and lost millions of dollars spent in the prospecting stage. Despite dropping from the Forbes list of dollar billionaires a few years back due to devaluation and lower crude oil prices, her networth as a naira billionaire (or dollar millionaire) is still huge! It's commendable that she personally gave out N1billion as a donation to Nigerians towards Covid-19 palliatives, and much more. This here is the real savvy woman and silent achiever. P.S. Those young and highly ignorant Ibo ethnic bigots posting on this and other NL threads that Mrs. 'Folorunso Alakija slept with 2 former Heads of State to get the oil licence are involved in criminal defamation of character! She NEVER did such and this is the reason why I had to put up this NL post. Mr. Modupe Alakija (who is from the aristocrat Alakija family) is a top lawyer, and you dweebs spreading fake news here about his wife will get charge to court very soon. Arthur Eze also bidded for the risky deep offshore oil blocks alongside the sagacious Mrs. Alakija (a former senior banker) in 1993, yet non of these Ibo kids insult Arthur Eze, but choose to insult and defame Mrs. Alakija on online platforms such as NL because she is of Yoruba descent. Surely, this is a psychotic behavior and a display of delusion of grandeur! |

I mean not everyone who experienced a dopamine high acts out obsessively. @Kobojunkie We all have different body biochemistries and levels of tolerance... based on genetics. Self-awareness is also key in extricating ourselves when one partner ditches the other. However the subconscious fear of "emotional pain" could also be making him to live in denial of the fact that the gal doesn't love him despite the fact that he has money to spend on her. You do have a valid point about personal behavioral inducement being a factor in the annoying behavior of the dude despite loads of red flags! Eeeew! |

Supreme145: It's not in my nature to bother about people's relationships but this is happening to someone that's like a brother to me. He has been dating a girl for a year now and it's obvious this girl doesn't love him but he won't just give up. He keeps throwing money at her in a bid to win her love.
Things got messier when this girl met a particular guy some months back... This guy happens to live in the compound of my club mate so I know him well. The girl has begged my guy to free her that she's in love with someone else but this guy no gree instead he's planning to attack the innocent guy.
He confided in me that the girl has not let him touch her since she met this other guy, that's over five months now. I once overhead the guy boasting to his friends that he's a redpiller because someone else is taking care of his girlfriend while he does the knacking free of charge. He's even flexing everything that my guy buys for the girl. All pleas to my guy to free this girl has fallen on deaf ears.
My club mate told me that the girl has been with the guy for over one month now, my guy comes to town once a week to see the girl, gets her stuffs and this girl will just go back to the other boy that is even jobless.
My guy is finer and far richer than this new guy, he's planning to start a business for this girl and I've been trying to change his mind to no avail. It's no longer normal, I would've said he's charmed but the girl has begged him to free her but he refused. The guy is even the one flexing the sample of the products he sent her. Everything she has done to drive him has failed so she just relaxed and enjoying the money.
This simping is on another level, it hurts me to see my guy in this kinda situation. I've gotten him picture proofs that the girl is cheating but he won't change his mind. The girl even admitted that she's been having sex with the guy buy he's claiming its a lie and the girl is trying to drive away.
Is there anything I can do to help him abeg. You did well by looking out for the dude's interests. Time for you to step aside. |

Kobojunkie: It appears as though your friend has an obsessive personality as what you describe reads more like he is obsessed with a gal who no longer desires him. You can introduce him to a mental health counselor to help dig down to finding the trauma behind the obsession. Other than that, there is really not much else that can be done than to let your friend continue down this path until he decides to let go of the object of his obsession. Nice perspectives, but... It's as a result of the effect of "dopamine" on the human brain which causes people to do very stupid things in the presence of someone they are attracted to. Lol. The dopamine effect on the dude will eventually wear off and he'll learn some punishing lessons as well. |

Career › Re: My Internship Experience: A Journey To Self Realization by AlphaTaikun: 11:37am On May 21, 2022*. Modified: 11:55am On May 21, 2022 |
missoreo: The value of an undergraduate internship cannot be over emphasized. It broadens your horizon, deepens your connections and keys you into a state of mind that most graduates struggle to transition into after their studies. Getting a good grade is just the first step; the corporate world is another ball game entirely.
I was fortunate to have the unique experience of interning at 2 of the big 4 accounting firms over my summer internship period. Once I commenced my 3rd year at the university in September, I started applying aggressively for an internship position. I did some permutations and figured that if I applied for 20 internships, at least 5 would come through.
I wrote my first online assessment test for a reputable bank, however before I finished the second section, I received a notification that I had failed. I was distraught and my confidence shaken, but not for long. I sat down to strategize and asked myself a few questions: What was I doing wrong? How could I improve? Etc. I persevered and kept on applying but the rejection letters kept rolling in. My permutations seemed not so accurate anymore, but then something changed.
Early March, I got a mail from KPMG Nigeria to write an assessment test and that marked the beginning of a new chapter. I eventually passed the assessment and the subsequent interview. As I awaited the offer letter from KPMG, another offer letter rolled in. My aggression was eventually paying off and I began the countdown to my resumption date.
The 1st of June was a special day. I woke up bright and early to beat Lagos traffic and arrived for my first day of work in good spirits. First impressions right? Well, KPMG did a great job with first impressions, from its magnificent tower to its cultured people; it was a beauty to behold. The internship proved to be everything I imagined and more. I stepped into the induction room with over 100 bright eyed interns like myself and interactions with them was definitely inspiring. During my internship, I learnt the importance of teamwork and collaboration and served as a team lead on two separate projects. At the end of the internship, we were treated to a pleasurable outing at a lovely resort.
Soon after, I started another internship programme at PwC Nigeria, an experience that stretched me to new limits. I can liken the experience to being thrown into the deep end of a sea along with a life raft and tools to make a sail. The challenge would be to successfully build a boat and sail to the shore within a definite time frame. The internship was a 10 week intensive programme that intimated us with the practice of consulting and enabled us develop key competencies along the way. Our technical and leadership skills, business acumen, global awareness as well as ability to leverage on relationships were put to test. The experience presented a unique opportunity to learn, make mistakes and re-learn in a high pressure environment. The pressure allowed us to test our limits, discover our strengths, develop them and curb our weaknesses. Being in an environment with the best and brightest across the country, knowing your strengths and projecting them is key to being a star, however, it takes a lot more to be a superstar.
I was a part of a team of 6 interns from different universities comprising both undergraduates and graduates. Initially, the learning curve was painfully steep; we were racing against tight deadlines with deliverables due every week. However, with ample support and immediate feedback from team leads and senior management, our hard work began to pay off. We all began to demonstrate core competencies and imbibe the values of our organization. We even began to update our nomenclature with firm catch phrases like ‘this bit’ and ‘I can tell you this for free’. We developed a strong bond and the true meaning of team spirit became more evident.
At the end we made a final presentation to some of the firm’s partners and had a lover dinner outing with our line of service partner on the final day. It was a great experience to be able to get up close and personal with a great role model.
I now fully appreciate what teamwork, leadership, excellence and relationships mean and represent beyond mere words typed on my resume. Teamwork is recognizing that you are just as strong as your weakest link, and so you should build up your team so that there are no weak links. It is about situational leadership, allowing the person with the relevant core competency for a situation lead. Leadership is not just doing for others, but teaching them how to do, being responsible for how well they grow so that with or without you being there, they soar. Excellence is being a superstar, shining in the midst of brilliant minds. Having great interpersonal relationships is being able to manage the peculiarities of different personalities effectively by learning how each person likes being related with and giving them that exactly.
Beyond these values, applying yourself, thinking through and having a clear thought process is crucial. My values have been strengthened, I am more aware of myself, my purpose and my strengths. I am energized and ready to push myself even further, develop myself beyond my academics, add value in everything I do and have an amazing year.

As far back as 1991, I had read that the gallant Ibadan General, Balogun Oderinlo who took part in defeating the Fulani jihadists at Osogbo and at Otun-Ekiti was a practicing Muslim! Islam came into Yorubaland 500 years ago via Mali. Seun Kuti's rant was filled with historical fallacies and he ended up sounding like he was a bit drunk or tipsy. Seun Kuti has to offer open apologies on his official social media platforms for misleading people and inadvertently allowing online propagandists of non-Yoruba origin to manipulate his FB post to spread hate speech! As a non-Muslim, I do know what point the younger Seun Kuti was trying to make, which is a call for UNITY among Yorubas, but he went about it the wrong way by giving false historical information. |

Christistruth00: The Emir of Ilorin fled !!!!!!!!!!
It was while the Yorubas were busy beating themselves up at the Kiriji War that he quietly sneaked back into Ilorin
Later on in Ilorin Balogun Yoruba ( Alanamu) and his followers finished him
Kwara was already taken back before the British arrived
Till today Ilorin is a Yoruba Town More than 90% of the indigenes are Yoruba
My Mother was born and raised in Ilorin my Cousin's are still there
All Civilians Governors of Kwara have been Yoruba
Ilorin was founded by Afonja's Great Grandfather and the Yorubas there are of Oyo Ethnic Stock
The ruler of Ilorin when the British arrived was a Yoruba man Called balogun alanamu .
The last Emir Momoh had been defeated by the Yoruba Chiefs and had burnt himself alive inside his Palace
Ilorin has Fulani Presence only because the British reimposed the defeated Emir on Ilorin around 1900
Before that balogun Yoruba (Inakoju alanamu) was the actual ruler of Ilorin.
The Emir had been deposed by the Ilorin Yoruba Chiefs before the British arrived.
balogun alanamu fought the British and was exiled to Jebba after the British defeated him.
It was the British that reinstaled an Emir in Ilorin after the defeat of balogun Yoruba Inakoju alanamu due to Political Pressure from Northern Emirs .
The Emir of Ilorin had been defeated and deposed by the Ilorin Yoruba Chiefs before the British arrived.
The British left at Independence after an agreement was made to have a referendum Kwara State.
The Post independence Government of Balewa and Azikiwe frustrated that referendum by not carrying out the Kwara referendum which should have happened at the same time as the Midwest referendum in order to cripple Awolowo and his Party Politically after Awolowo had been jailed in 1962
Balewa and Azikiwe also didn't Carry out the other referendums agreed with the British before independence meant for the Eastern and Northern Minority Ethnic groups.
Ilorin still has an Emir because of Colonial and Tribal Politics
There are at least 30 Towns with Crowned Obas that Completely encircle Ilorin
Ilorin is Practically a Yoruba Town
The Emir is not Fulani but Hausa
And they were Yorubanised at least a Century ago
Ilorin and Kwara are Yorubaland
https://www.iosrjournals.org/iosr-jhss/papers/Vol7-issue2/D0721518.pdf?id=5971 Very well said! The Yorubas were in full control of Ilorin under Balogun Alanamu when the British under George Goldie attacked Ilorin in the late 1890s. Gambaris are of Yorubanised Hausa stock who the British led by Goldie mistakenly imposed on Yoruba Ilorin who are over 90% of Ilorin. |

Carlosdd: Seun Kuti releases that statement out of ignorant Yoruba inter related well within themselves as far as religion is concern the Ibadan army with support of other Yoruba leaders stop Fulani invasion so when and where was the war he referred to took place most Yoruba families some are Muslims while others are Christian living together exchanges gifts during festive period . Don’t just open your mouth and talk until you do your fact findings Well said! I'm shocked over Seun Kuti's poor knowledge of history! First off, Afonja only used the Hausa and Kanuri slaves in the Oyo Empire who he granted freedom so as to help him in war as mercenaries. Afonja's war was NOT an Islamic jihad! Second, Balogun (i.e., General) Oderinlo who was one of the top Ibadan army commanders that fought and defeated the jihadist was a Muslim. Ibadan army defeated the jihadist invaders at Oshogbo in the 1840s. The Kanuris who were already Muslims for centuries also defeated the Fulani jihadist invaders in battle. Seun Kuti must learn to read credible books such as "The History of the Yorubas" by Rev. Samuel Johnson, and more. |

I don't really want to be in a serious relationship now but I think I am now attracted to boys younger than my age
Not little boys of under 18! And I am not a peodophile! The 19 year-old will get tired of the 39 year-old within 10 years of marriage and start craving for a younger sexy broad because of the 20 years age gap. Pure infatuation phase. 2 years to 5 years maximum age difference between 2 emotionally intelligent people works fine IMHO. Bruce Willis' ex-wife got married to a much younger toyboy who was over 10 years younger a few years back but the dude later ditched her. Before the handsome Richard 'Mofe Damijo got married to Jumobi Adegbesan, he used to be married to the media entrepreneur, May Ellen Ezekiel who was 5 years older than him for some years and they had a lovable marriage till she painfully passed on after a surgery back in the day. My honest opinion. |

abc115: https://twitter.com/Mr_JAGs/status/1527359596821565464 This road is strategic and will be one of the most important road, not only for Lagos, but for Nigeria... because it will serve as major evacuation route for Dangote Refinery to Epe then to Lagos-Benin Expressway bypassing Lagos Metropolis. That's commendable. Rail tracks for cargo movement should come next ASAP. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu MUST start the construction of the Coastal road in 2022 to decongest the enervating traffic Lekki-Epe expressway. He'll get a guaranteed second-term support for that if he works for the benefit of all. #Eko ko ni baje |

a8180421: I wish you Success exploring the Real Estate sector and I've been telling few Nigerians here about the business opportunities here in the US. Everybody must not be a doctor, nurse, engineer or employee.
There are many opportunities to make money that requires not much capital. I was once a Cloud Engineer earning 45-60$/hr. (8hrs daily) and with enough benefits which after taxes and Medicare, SSN, I was left with 3.2k$ to 3.5k$(2 weeks(M-F) but I saved up and went into logistics and transportation, set-up my own entity (LLC), Got my own Motor Carrier Authority, USDOT Number, I never regret doing such since 2020. I make more than doctors, nurses, engineers. I know there are risks working for yourself but to be honest, the United States provides enabling environment for you to grow your business and succeed starting from loans to taxes write-offs, there’s lot of assistances from the government to explore to enable you grow your business.
I started with 1 box truck, which I bought $10k from Auction and put in extra 5k$ to fix it up and was moving freights interstates making almost 7-10k$ weekly, which after expenses (insurance, Drivers Pay, Taxes, Fuel, Tolls and maintenance, I profit 4500$ every week, I did that for 6-7 months building business credits and contacts.
After 7 months I went to a credit union, applied for a business loan and was approved. I got (3) 18 wheelers (Semi Sleepers and Trailers), with only 10% down-payment and I was financed for 60 months at monthly payments of 1500$ each truck with 5 years warranty (covers Transmission, Engine and DEF with aftermarket treatment and zero deductibles).
My trucks are moving freights from East (NY) -Western Region, (CA) North- South Region and 48 states, I gross each truck $18.5K (Mid-west Region-Western region) and after IFTA, IRP, Tolls and Drivers Pay, Taxes, I profit 7.5k$ each truck every week x 3 = 22.5k$ x 4 weeks = $90K monthly for 3 trucks, which after gas, financing, insurance, I still make between 50-60k$ for the 3 trucks monthly
Each 53’’ full load from NY, NJ, Chicago and East/Mid-West – West Coast = $8k, sometimes 9K$, sometimes 10k$ -20K$ depending on your negotiation skills and this is a 2–3-day trip and if you do the 2 trips and do extra LTL loads in a week, you gross more than 18k in a week. I do reefer and dry loads also.
I always advise most immigrants, save up and start your own business, there's a lot of money to make in the US, I know, starting up is difficult but with consistency and patience you can make it.
I have a Nigerian friend with 12 trucks, another doing buying and selling of properties, I have another one that owns ambulance services, there is money here in US, if you know how to use the assistances provided by Government.
Now I have contracts with Amazon, Walmart, JB hunt, Swift, CH Robinson and others. That is why you don’t see most Asians and Russians working for people rather they come here and establish business,
Even the Hispanics, most own their business, not that working for someone is bad but to me personally, I love business and I don’t want to work for someone again here in US or anywhere else. I plan to add more trucks and owning a fleet in 2-3 years’ time., which after I will come back to Nigeria to via for a Political Position and Fix Nigeria. @a8180421, You're the big Kahuna... Lol Wow, your summations here are too legit! The logistics and transportation company has really expanded because you were (and still are) clearly intentional and business savvy. You should be on the cover or get featured in "Black Enterprise" magazine and/or "Ebony" magazine. Truly inspiring! America indeed has a lot of underutilised resources for genuine businesses. You don't even have to know anybody to gain access to them. Immigrants do better at business ownership in Canada, the UK and the U.S. because of a glass ceiling or formal workplace discrimination, except perhaps in the in-demand STEM fields like Cloud Engineering, etc. If you haven't done so, you may wish to grab and read the Yale law Professor Amy Chua's book entitled "The Triple Package" and she listed Nigerians among the 8 cultural groups that are more likely to succeed in America. She listed the Chinese, Indians, Jews, Nigerians, Iranians, Lebanese-Americans, Cuban exiles, and Mormons.I've read a lot of financial education and business management books that are in my home library, and without a shadow of doubt, private investors and business owners are the richest, and wealthiest folks on earth. As of 1995, I had read the hard copy of the bestseller "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill which I would recommend for anyone to get a grip on how the power of clear intentions and a creative mind leads to a millionaire mindset. Last but not least, I like the fact that you have an interest in taking part in Nigerian politics down the road. Nigeria needs a lot of Diasporan input in the political and tech space in order to leapfrog like Singapore, Taiwan, India, China, etc. I'll stay in touch... Thanks again for the deep insights. Cheers. |

Yemike: Clearing is the first thing to do after land had been acquired. The cost varies depending on the location but an Aboki/Agatu man shouldn't charge more than 4k/plot making it #24,000 an acre.
The next thing to do is to acquire the hybrid plantain sucker to be planted. I can provide you with highly yield plantain sucker at an affordable price of #130 per sucker that makes it #130,000 per 1000 sucker cuz you'll need 1,000 plantain sucker on an acre of land.
To plant the sucker you can contact those who did the clearing for you or get in touch with professionals to do that for you at the rate of #30-#50 per sucker. (I can help with that @ #30 per sucker) let's say you'll spend #30,000 here.
Clearing of weeds should be done twice first in 2-3 and 5-6 months respectively its the same amount as the clearing charge which is #24,000.
Fertilizer/maure needs to be added to enhance good yield. Poultry wastes is the best here and you can get this for free from poultry farmers or pay a token for it. Let's assume #5,000 for this.
Total money spent = #250,000.
Then, it's harvest time.
The price of plantain bunches are variable, it depends on the size of the bunch. The price varies from #800 from small bunch to #1,500. Average bunch should be around #1,150. Assuming after harvesting you have like 900 bunches available for sale and you sold it #1,000 each totalling 900k after harvest. Deducting your start-up capital which is #250,000 and #50,000 for miscellaneous (fuel, transport etc) you'll be left with #600,000. You can make double the amount. If you follow my calculations I restrict it to the barest minimum profit you can make.
The cost of production for the next planting season is very low as there is no need to buy suckers again. In fact you'll have enough suckers to start up another plantation or you may decide to sell the suckers to a fellow farmer.
I hope this helps a little. Feel free to ask questions in any area that you're still in doubt. Deep insights from 2017. |

maxipharo: Plantain farming in Nigeria is not a new thing, but over the years it has taken a dramatic turn in alleviating poverty and creating opportunities for agripreneurs. Million are currently been made every year from plantain farming in Nigeria, yet there is no end to it prospects because the demand for plantain and its by-product is higher than it used to be. Nigeria is one of the largest plantain producing countries in the world. Despite this, Nigeria has not been featuring among plantain exporting countries in the world because the demand from local consumers is relatively high. Today, the number of farms cultivating plantain in Nigeria is low and this makes the demand for plantain and it’s by-products high. Plantains are members of the banana family, but they contain more starch and is lower in sugar, on the average plantain has about 200 calories and is a good source of potassium and dietary fiber. Plantains can be used in many ways: - It can be eaten raw, steamed, roasted and fried - Plantains can be dried and grounded into flour commonly called Amala among yoruba’s - Plantain can be boiled, blended with water, spices and sugar to make chapo. - After removing the skin, the unripe fruit can be sliced thin and deep fried in hot oil to produce plantain chips. - Overripe plantain can be fried, to produced dodo(Dodo Ikire) Now, let us consider some basic steps to start a plantain farm: Land Selection When selecting land for a plantain farm, the land should be : - Well-drained - Fertile - Good topography - Adequate PH - Free from pest - Easily accessible. Plantain does best in loamy soil, the soil should contain enough organic matter with moderate moisture content. Land Preparation The purpose of land preparation is to provide the necessary soil conditions which will enhance the successful establishment of the young suckers. The land is to be prepared with minimum disturbance to the soil (no-tillage). Manual clearing should be preferred to mechanized clearing because the machinery used always remove the topsoil which contains the organic matters. Land Spacing The recommended spacing for plantain farming is 3m between the plantain rows and 2m within the row (3m by 2m). Alternatively, 2.5m×2.5m can also be used. A straight row in a flat land is recommended for the plantain suckers for maximum excess to sunshine and flow of air. Rows should follow a contour line in a sloppy land to decrease the effect of soil erosion. Selecting Plantain Sucker Plantain suckers are usually used in growing plantain, so it can also be referred to as the plant seed. Plantain suckers are usually acquired from plantain farmers at a price range of #150-#500 depending on the variety. When selecting plantain sucker the medium sized plantain suckers is usually preferred to the giant ones because the giant one's leaves can easily be damaged by strong wind. Selected plantain sucker should be strong and active, free from pest and diseases. Plantain suckers are usually separated from the matured plantain with the use of spade or machete, care must be taken so as not to peel off the sucker corm. NOTE: The yield of your plantain farm depends on the type of sucker selected and varieties. Planting Plantain suckers are usually planted during the rainy season. The acquire plantain sucker should be planted as soon as possible, planted 30 by 30 by 30cm each. The planting hole should be deep so as to accommodate the root ball of the sucker. Mulching, Fertilization, Weed control Mulching is important for the transplanted plantain sucker to retain soil water, regulate soil temperature, improve soil fertility and suppress weed growth around the planted suckers. Fertilization Plantain requires sufficient organic matter to thrive well. The organic matter provides a suitable environment necessary for the growth of the sucker and to ensure a good yield. It is therefore required to provide nutrient to the suckers through fertilizers either organic or inorganic fertilizer. Dead plantain leaves should be left on the ground to improve soil fertility. Organic fertilizer made up of livestock manure, household waste and wood ash improves plantain growth, yield and greatly reduce the effect of borer weevils and nematodes. Weed control It is necessary to eliminate weeds because they deprive plants of vital nutrients. Weeding can be done every six to eight weeks but the effect of the weed will get less when the canopy of the plantain leaves have grown thick. Weed can be done manually or by the use of herbicides. Harvesting Harvesting of plantain is done after eight to ten months of planting, or when one or two plantains out of the bunch is beginning to look yellowish. Cut the bunches from the stalk, this should be done carefully to avoid scratch on the bunch, little scratch or pressure on the bunch cause it to get rotten within a very short time. Cut down the plantain tree to the ground and shred the leaves to be used for another mulching. Remember once a plantain is harvested, you don’t need to plant again. Marketing There is always a readily available market for plantains, you can sell in the local market, or supply to companies or industries that process plantain.

ARMINigeria: It is a popular belief that after the Oil and the Telecommunication sector, Agriculture is the next most rewarding business. This cannot be disputed seeing the calibre of billionaires and millionaires residing in the agric-business.
The fact that agric-business is so broad makes the stage accommodate as many zealous prospects as possible. The opportunities in the business ranges from Production, Marketing, Processing, Mechanization (Value chains) and so on. In the agric-business, production has been the easiest to venture into. However, it possesses the highest of risks. There is where 70% if agric business men seek refuge. From our experience in production, the least riskiest investments are cassava farming, Piggery, Plantain farming Apiculture, among a few others.
Of the aforementioned, plantain farming seem to have the least risk because of its perennial cultivation practice. And remains among the most profitable agric business in the world with a broad value chain. Plantain farming is so lucrative that it is very difficult to find an article online talking about the risks involved in the production of plantains. This article is dedicated to analyzing the likely risk in plantain farming and tips in managing such risks. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Services (ERS) categorize Agricultural risks into: - production risk -price if market risk - financial risk - institutional risk - human or personal risk Our focus will be mainly on Production and Price market risks and how to manage them.
PRODUCTION RISK This originates from the deviation of the normal growth of the crop during cultivation. It can be due to diseases, weather, pests, substandard inputs- which includes infested suckers, poor irrigation and unacceptable agronomic practices. The mitigation of Production risks are the most difficult as most are unexpected and, or natural. Examples are pest diseases and weather; although, they can be anticipated or forecasted. The other problem are however man-made. That is, relating to agronomic practices. Use of infested suckers, poor irrigation, substandard inputs, inadequate inputs and technical know-how are the few examples.
PRICE OF MARKET RISKS The Price of market risk is the most irritating risk in plantain business, or probably Agricultural business generally. This occurs when a farmer has duly cultivated his Plantain farm, have good yield and have followed the best agronomic practices; BUT CANNOT SELL his produce. Inability to sell produce can be due to glut in the market. A situation where there is excess supply of a produce and low demand for it. Producers will refuse to drop their price and consumers would refuse to purchase from the producers. This forces the two parties to force equilibrium of Demand and Supply. In other times, the inability to sell can be as a result of a group of people dictating the price the producers must sell by inciting the marketers. Take the nation Nigeria as a case study. There are Unions in almost every trade (Trade Unions). There are the Fish Sellers Union, Pepper Sellers Association, Market Women Association, to.mention a few. These trade Unions dictate the market pricce to both the producers and marketers. Leaving the producers to decide whether to sell or not.
MANAGING RISKS IN PLANTAIN FARMING Here are some of the best ways to manage risks in plantain farming. Note that the best tip ever is to get the best agronomist. 1. Best Agronomic Practice: anyone not ready for the financial implications involved in setting up a plantain plantation/farming should not venture ab initio. It is time, finance, energy and knowledge consuming. Avoid agronomists who make noise on social media and stake claims on theory and speculations. Try checking out their farms substantially (not pictures) and hear from few of their clients as well. On the other hand, investors/clients should not encourages agronomist to manage fund at the detriment of the planting program or operation.
2. Quality inputs: it is no longer story that fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, planting materials and other farm inputs are sub-standard in this country (Nigeria). However, there are still certified input producers or suppliers within the country. Some good agro organizations can link you up if you approach them.
3. Price of Market the most successful men in the agric industry control their market and determine their product price. They make use of what is called Market contract of Forward contract. It is also popularly known as off-takers in this part of the world. Perhaps, dealing with Off-takers comes with its own challenges. We shall be looking at some of those challenges in our next edition. Market or Forward contract is identifying your market before production, have a formal agreement with your Market (this must be done before planting of production). The prices are agreed and the quantities estimated- all documented in the Forward contract. This helps to control the price in the market from the files.
4. Insurance: there are several insurance packages that suit farmers. It is true that most insurance companies avoid the Agriculturist or they vary their policies depending on the type of farm or farm risks involved. Insurance is still the best way (after Agronomic practices) whatsoever to manage risks. Not only in plantain farming, but in Agriculture at large. Plantain farming however is easier insured than other crop farming.
CONCLUSION There are so many other risks not mentioned in this article as there are other management tips not mentioned. For more enquiries on PLANTAIN FARMING, investments and it's agronomy; you can contact ARMI at you leisure.
