lol--- See how you "attacked" me like we've had a discussion/argument prior this thread. Well, there is something like faking an accent. If an accent is not yours (if it's not innate), you talking in it (either wrongly or rightly) means you're faking it. You can fake it convincingly-- it's still faking. Plus, the phrase "faking an accent" is not a Nigerian thing; it's a common expression everywhere.
I didnt attack u. If u look at my comment, I was neither rude nor offensive in anyway. If u believe strongly in "faking accent" thing I would convince u further that u are wrong. If u are learning a language, there are 4 main elements u master about that language. 1) Reading 2) Speaking 3) Writing 4) Listening. Let me go to number 2 because its what we are discussing now. If u are taking a speaking test in English (the language in question) U would be tested on fluency, (how very well can u speak without pressure) Intonations, (how are u stressing words in relation with their context in a sentence and the impression of such sentence) and lastly, pronunciation. (How do u pronounce each words, are u placing right stresses on the right syllables?) Now my sister, if u are one who have mastered these elements correctly, There is no way you would sound like a typical Nigerian when u speak. My question to you, would you say such person is faking an accent? Such person have probably taken a step further than u in learning a language. Another thing, many can pick up accent perfectly even if they are living in a place for a short term (1 yr or 2) are they fakes? I don't know if u are based in Naija or anywhere else but I hope u'd undstand this thing and re-jig ur opinion "faking accent" If u disagree still, in that case, u must agree that the fact that u learn how to express urself in another grammatical structure (english language) totally different from ur native grammatical structure (ur local language) also implies that u are faking each time u express urself in english and not ur mother tongue. Regards. |
aribisala0:Ur argument is intelligent, I agree with ur point but I wish to state this. We can not completely wave off standards in English by saying there is no standard because mode of speaking (accents) varies from UK-Canada-America. I believe that u must be aware that even though your point is right, there are still effective means of measuring standards in English. There has been many situation whereby in international situations, many applicants would be asked to do English tests except if they are native English speakers. In this cases, they would list applicants from America, Britain English-speaking-Canada and Australia as exempt. Therefore, the standard to measuring one's spoken English is when it is compared with how it is spoken by the known native speakers. On Cyril Stober, dont u think we should ask ourself that why is his own type pf Nigerian accent could be intelligible internationally? It is because Nigerians like him have mastered not only the grammar in English but the oral principles of it. So u wont hear ppl like that misplacing stresses on syllables. So in all, if u listen to him and compare it with common Nigerian accents here and there, we can not still agree that Cyril's accent is typical Nigerian accent. For Wole Shoyinka, I dont even agree that the guy speaks the typical Nigerian accent, at all. I advise u to listen o that guy again, there is a large influence of american accent in his spoken English even though he doesnt speak in the American accent. Language is an art, we need to understand the art in languages before we begin to pass judgement on the language and or the speaker. The truth is that our accent does not respect the principles of diction. It could sound beautiful that is true but it doesnt mean that it is easily understandable. Let me tell u, I also like to hear spanish and Italian speak English, they sound very cool and rythmical but it doesnt mean that they speak good accent because sometimes u really need to ask and ask again b4 u actually understand the word he or she is trying to pronounce. Therefore, I am not arguing here that Nigerian accent is ugly or bad or condemning it but condemning any known Nigerian who speaks in Known native English speaking accent is also bad. And for you and you who speaks horrible accents, I am not arguing to defend you, you better get it right or speak your Naija accent. Cheers. |
Babe, this is what I want to make clear. It is wrong to say someone is faking accent. When u are trying to speak in an accent, u have only two options. U either know how to speak in such accent or not. If someone can speak in a given accent very well then he is not faking it, he is speaking it. If u are not able to speak in the accent u are trying to claim very well and thereby speaking rubbish instead, u are not faking it, rather u dont know how to speak it. What you can tell me is that someone is faking being American/British (whereas he is not) because he is able to speak in American/British accent. I can understand that. But faking accent its a common expression in Naija but its counter-logic.
LOL-- Hilarious thread! Everyone should calm down jo ----Kini big deal? I don't have problem with people faking accents. As long as you sound normal, and people can hear you clearly.I have a problem with people trying way too hard ("to be cool" , and at the end of the day, end up sounding Ridiculous! In fact, I don't have a problem with them, rather, they make me laugh.Random thought: how come in Nollywood movies, when Jim Iyke comes back to Nigeria from England(after living there all his life), he ends up getting an American accent? ? ? ![]()
|
I agree with the poster on this issue because presenters in Nigeria dont know what they are doing. It is irritating when u hear these horrible accents, its very shameful. But I beg to differ a bit with others here on this issue. Please when we criticize, we must know how to separate the wheat from th chaffs. Some are just criticizing but they themselves dont even know what a good accent should sound like. Many Nigerians go ahead and run a fellow Nigerian down because he speaks in british or American accents. Where as, a lot of factors could be responsible for this and so dont be quick to call someone fake when u observe this. As long as any one speaks an accent well, puts the right stress on the right syllable, sounds clear and sharp enough, I dont think there is any justification for running such person down by calling him fake. The point is that the person has mastered a language beyond the grammar and vocabulary by speaking it in the accent of the native speaker. So why would u call such person fake? We must bear it in mind that in International Language Tests, U are tested for reading, writing, listening and Speaking (and this is the where the accent issue comes in) a Nigerian who took a speaking test with a perfect (not horrible) British or american accent would score a significantly higher mark than another Nigerian who of course also speaks good english but with a typical Nigerian accent. If you would observe, a Nigerian who is being interviewed on eg CNN or BBC speaking the typical Nigerian accent would have his comments re subtitled in English (most especially in special documentaries) because they think the quality of his accent is not clear enough to be understood by all English listeners around the world. Whereas, another Nigerian whose spoken English is may be not completely American or British but that has a relative influence of any of those accents on the way he speaks would not be re-subtitled because it is assumed that his spoken english is clear enough to be understood by all english listeners across the globe. I am only trying to give a reason why we can not just be castigating from a blanket view. The Poster raised th issue of horrible accented presenters, we shouldnt take it over to other Nigerians who have refined their spoken English even up to the accents. For your information, White ppl also do these and they dont call themselves fake. Its a common thing to see a German or Swedish for example speaking not only good english but in the british accent and when you wonder if he was birtish, he would tell you that "no I have never lived in britain for any long time but I simply picked up the accent because I have a british girlfriend" in cases like this, they xpect a complement from the enquirer like "wow u must be a genius to have mastered the accent this much just because of your girlfriend" the enquirer wont say "haaa u are fake, why not speak in German accent?" So we need to understand these things. Castigate only those who are mocking english by speaking horrible accents and do not include those who have mastered it perfectly well. Thanks. |
SHABZ:That Adromida is just not normal in her thinking. I think she is an Aristo or something. I always say that the reason Nigerian ladies will forever be ruled by men is because the ladies have this mentality that their pu.ss.ies are for sale. U think a guy must pay once he is having sexual relationships with a lady. No!!! very dull mentality. In physiological and psychological ramifications, they are both enjoying themselves and infact the guy is the one exhausting the most energy so I don't know where this stupid thinking comes from. If a guy would spend on a lady, it should be based on emotion and respect he has for the lady and not sex. If sex is the issue, then she is a prostitute. I want to ask Adromida if that is the kind of lesson she would teach her daughter? If her answer is yes then she is about to give birth to another prostitute |
@OP! Think about it very well. U have gotten advice from 2 different angles in this thread. Some are saying pay and God will reward u and some are saying u should not be her dad. Both sides are making sense, it is now left to you to re examine the relationship between you and that lady. How much you trust her and how much she is worth it and then make your decision. If u were my brother, I would advise you to solve your own problem 1st before solving others. If the amount is nothing to you then u can pay and forget about it but if it is alot of money to u as at now, why not use such to solve your own problem? I can understand that u are likely stuck in the middle with that lady. On 1 side u are very emotionally attached to her and willing to help her while on the other side, u are wondering if you would nt regret it in case the lady turns out later unappreciative. The only way to be on safer side is to step back and wish her goodluck but if u wanna risk it, yes u can but expect nothing back otherwise, your heart may break. |
HOUSING 56. Conversion of the Parliamentarian quarters to Concord Hotel Annex 57. Conversion of Banquet Hall to Government House Chapel 58. Design and construction of Heroes Square 59. Design and construction of Ikemba Ojukwu Convention Center, Owerri 60. Renovation of Commissioners’ Quarters 61. Reconstruction of Multi-Purpose Hall and V.I.P Lounge, Government House 62. Reconstruction of Imo State House of Assembly 63. Reconstruction of the Exco Chambers Building 64. Renovation of the Imo Concorde Hotel 65. Reconstruction of the Abuja Laison Office of the Imo State Government 66. Reconstruction of the Brigade Commander’s Guest House 67. Renovation of the Imo State Police Commissioner’s Guest House 68. Renovation of the abandoned Governor’s Lounge, near Concorde Hotel 69. Design and construction of Multi-purpose Hall at Oguta Motel 70. Reconstruction of the Customary Court, Owerri Of course he would have a very long list if these are the achievements they are talking about. Renovation of this and that guest houses, and they labelled this under HOUSING? Housing for themselves or the masses are we joking? Well I dont have anything against Rochas any way but he should discourage this kind of propaganda and do real work or may be mention only the "mentionable" there for example project number 58, 59 and maybe also 64&69 cos the hotel can generate revenue for the state while the multipurpose hall could be used by the citizen (if it is affordable enough). I think the rest is garbage, it shouldnt be on the list |
It depends on many things. 500k is not so much to ask your wife to stay home or for your wife to want to stay home but that is in a situation whereby she also earn a relatively good salary such as 150/200k or more. If she earns say 100k or less and that is the reason why she is not always at home to take care of the kids, it will make sense for u and your wife to agree that she stops that work and face the kids since she doesnt earn a salary that makes significant addition to what u earn. So it does not really worth it for her to continue with such job at the expense of the kids. So the big question is what if the situation is the other way around, would the guy agree with his wife to stay home and take care of the kids ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ?while the wife is out there busy with her 500k salary job? |
Gbawe my brother I understand what u mean but is VERY WELL advicable for us nigerians to first be happy if there is any presecution against any former government offical because there is no smoke without fire for them to have charges against him, then there are some element of truth in it. That you should know after so many years of corruption from military to civilian (PDP) I no long trust any government again and more so Tinubu and you and not blame me and others like me. Lets say tiunbu made his money when he was not yet elected etc there is no way he could have generated that much money to be conducting elections, building houses, buying lands etc but let even say all i mentioned are all lies by PDP against him (ACN) at least you have to accept he is guilt until proven innocent which i doubt i think u should be happy that one of the corrupt government offical is going down unless proven otherwise
Furthermore, I am surprised that Gbawe is so bothered about this issue because this is a Tinubu he believes in so much and all the allegation they leveled against him can not be true, so why is he (Gbawe) crying from the roof? At least, it can not be that he is afraid that his mentor is about to be jailed since he is sure that his mentor is not corrupt and not a liar. If Gbawe sincerely stand for accountability and not corruption, you should accept the case against Tinubu as a welcome development. From what i see in the case, there is no way they would manipulate Tinubu to jail if none of those allegations were true. So if u agree with that, why are u bothered? U are shouting that the case is politically motivated but can u tell me any case of corruption in Nigeria that was not politically motivated? Political motivation of corruption cases has become a norm in Nigeria so such point can not be a premise upon which you would base your argument to exonerate him. We cant move forward if we employ a thief as a watchdog against other thieves. That is not the kind of development we are craving for. I can feel your pain Gbawe, you dont want to look like a loser because u have spent ur precious time defending the ACN here over a long span of time but sometimes u have to shun sentiment and face reality if you want to be reasonable. My advice to you! |
I have read conflicting articles about this Tinubu trial. In some, the names that predominate the list are Bola Tinubu, Bola Remi Tinubu etc. In another it is predominantly filled with names of his children so this case is hopeless. I would not waste my time on this case if they are charging him o\becaus his children has foreign accounts except it is affirmed that Tinubu is the signatory to all the accounts otherwise they cant nab him. If however there are still one or two accounts directly traced to him, he might still be charged of perjury provided that it is true that he did not declare it in the asset declaration form as appropriate and that he still keeps these account active (money in and or money out) during the time he was the governor. I see a case in that but for thinking that he could be nabbed because his children has foreign accts is absolute nonsense. |
jaydenbash:As you might be right that professional master is terminal, such conclusion can however not be definite. If after some time a professional degree holder is willing to switch back to academics and research, you may go for an advanced master and get back on track from there. It may interest you to know that even an academic bachelor degree could be (in some cases) a sufficient prerequisite for a phd research. May be never possible in Nigeria because our edu system is very archaic and stiff. @OP just like Jaydenbash has put it. If u are considering Phd somewhere in the corner of your mind, better do academic master, its a means to fast-tracking your way there but if not, U may go for professional master as it is also a means to fast-tracking your way your dream job. Good luck. |
Hey man, before you put ur money on that business, try to make a market survey of the product you want to try out. Never generalise products in ur survey. If u make an A-Z survey of tomatoes for example, dont think all conditions will be the same if it was also onions or groundnuts. You must bear it in mind that demand rate of those products will differ in relation with varying factors. As much as you are determined to g ahead, it is also important to identify all bottlenecks just like someone has tried to listed here: accidents, unneccessary delay BAD TIMING (How do u ensure proper timing in the face of Nigerian factor?) U must answer those questions b4 u go ahead dont just think if u pray, everything will fall in place |
Ok, goodluck with caning your kids guys!!! I will train my own kids more on working on their psychology and very less on cane and they will better trained. So once more, good luck guys! |
Too bad I can imagine how u felt, I feel ur pain. why do they have that much beef for us and we dont? It clearly shows we are more civilized and brilliant than them. |
I like this topic and even peoples argument but from my own opinion, I think I see problem. So it means many still see sense in heavily beating a child before u can instill a certain discipline? wow, what a revelation. Look it is an unfortunate situation for both the parent and the child to beat a child wickedly because u want to mold such child. U must be a lazy parent or just doing something wrong for u to go that extent to mold ur child. Children are not difficult to train provided u create sufficient time to interact with them, they are very innocent but I dont see Nigerian parents doing that, they think once they pay the child's school fees and buy them foods and clothes is what we call interaction. No u must be ur child's friend, talk to them as regularly as possible, bring urself down to their level, by this, u will see undesirable propensities early enough to curb either by mere ear squeezing, smacking and may be some spanking if the kid is a bit stubborn. In order not to spank the kid another time u must do a close follow up to help the child to stay on track. The point is I see many parents not raising their kids from the psycho logical angle rather they think the cane is the key which could be at times counter productive. My dad gave me alot of beating as a kid but my 2 younger siblings were raised entirely differently because he was already getting old and relaxing and I can tell u they were more psychologically balanced than me. It took me some time to get over it and build confidence. So for me, u can achieve stopping ur child from bad habits without tieing them on the table and beating them with electric cables, c'mon that is unthinkable. |
It pains me to see people associating disciplining a child with child abuse, Thats so far of it. When a child is spanked, grounded or given coporal punishment that might seem extreme, I do not think it is fair to misconstrue that as child abuse. My mum never flogged me with a cane, she said I had grown resistant to it, so she opted for 30mm coated electric wires. She would tie me to the table and flog the bejesus outta me. If someone where watching from the outside, its tantamount to child abuse, but was it like she did it everytime for no reason? NO!! I knew that the consequences for certain actions was always gonna be the cane. So if you see me being flogged mercilessly, i more than likely brought it on myself. Thats TRAINING A CHILD not child abuse. Child abuse is when a child is being sexually molested by a parent, not being catered for, is always beaten up for no reason by either a lunatic parent with a short fuse or an alcohlic parent, when a child is exposed to dangers/environments not suitable for a child, when the parents neglect a child, when the basics like food, shelter and school cannot be provided for a child, when a child has to work to support the family, e.t.c, Please flogging no be abuse o!! Na training, Na when flogging don turn fight na there abuse start,
Your mum abused you bitterly, How would you be tied in the 1st place and next, got beaten with an electric cable ?? You shouldn t be proud of this homie. Your mum got it wrong. And unfortunately you got it more wrong to think it was right that you were that tortured. No no no please, we have to train our kids of course but not this way. |
As well as i do not also support provocative manner of dressing as it proliferates uncontrollably these days, I think there is not much ppl can do about it in the general picture. All you need do is concentrate on your own nuclear family. There is excessive import of culture form the western world to Nigeria both in actual and virtual sense. Many Nigerians travelling abroad, the DSTV packed with foreign packages, even Nigerian entertainment is maintaining a current pace with the contemporary fashion, which is evil, like many of you might not know yet but plan is underway by a Nigerian businessman (with whom I have close business connections) to bring in Lady gaga to Nigeria soon. Lets think of it, Lady Gaga is a very bad influence but can you stop this guy from doing his business by bringing Gaga? if No, then these are the root causes of the problem you are discussing here. If you can not reverse all these developments, mere discussing and lamenting can not really solve the problem. Look at sagging, it is very irresponsible way to dress, you must really be a tough Dad or Mum to stop your kid from doing it, so I think what we should be discussing here is how do we protect our kids from this influences, forget about the society, thinking that you can stop the society at large is waste of time, devise strategy to stop your own kid and that is very very achievable. |
Good creativity form these guys, I feel the Ibime's composure more than others. When u want to rate such periphrasis with superimposition of vocabularies. You have to look very well how much are they adhering to grammar rules and how much sense it makes after all. Ibime put more message aross with concise expression while Aribisala concentrated more on superfluous use of vocabulary than being concise. (thats my own observation) To ppl who were saying grammar, this can not be tagged as a display of grammar skill but a display of their rich vocabulary boxes. there is a difference between both. U could be good with vocabularies and bad with grammar an vice versa. |
Why did many not see what I saw back then? The entire game is playing out just exactly as I knew it would. I am not surprised seeing the unfolding scenario with the ACN. Up to about 2 months ago hardly would u see anyone arguing negative of the ACN on NL except myself and few other guys who were real enough to try to see things from the other angle. U think ACN is the messiah party Nigeria is waiting for? Are they messiahs because they are actually messiahs or they called themselves Messiahs. Anyone can claim to be anything, it is left for ppl to believe in a false claim or discard it. Now look at this very long thread, more than 80% is bashing Tinubu and ACN, a sharp reverse of what was obtainable on NL some 100 days back. Even when the source of the news is not reliable. I didnt ses such news of his illness in Punch or Vanguard etc. What is talk of Naija? However, whether true or false, Tinubu would of course get treatment abroad if he was ill so the rumour is not about what Tinubu can not or would not do. I thought ppl claimed that the Dynamic Fashola have accentuated LUTH to world class, why wont Tinubu go there and get treatment? Cheers! |
Teslim must be so local to his hood. U think flimsy things like accents really matter in life? Okay for your information, the very very typical lagos accent sounds so gutter to me just like the gutter american accent from the projects but if Lagosians are proud of the same accent so why should they look down on an Ogbomosho or Ibadan accent. Someone like you must be an uncivilized local Lagos champion |
hollandis gave a fake link. How can Eguavoen be the coach and the match already on utube? c'mon ppl be serious around here. |
if u are considering Abeokuta for no cogent reason than to just pick a city in the s/west, I would advise u to pick Ibadan instead. Ibadan is relatively cheaper to live in compared with Abeokuta. U have more choices for nice neighborhood (estates) than there are in Abeokuta. A school of the same quality would surely be priced higher in Abeokuta It is possible for you to have everything you want in Ibadan, from school for ur kid, to your own Job, to shopping, to clubbing e.t.c without having any business in the very notorious areas that scares many who knows nothing about Ibadan apart from what thy read on newspaper or forums like this. U need to look for a house and a nearby school in areas in the axis of Agodi-G.R.A/Ikolaba, Old/New Bodija, Other axis- Akobo (be careful, the far end of Akobo might be a far proximity to the metro area therefore, look close to the general gas area) Bashorun is also very good with a lively mixture of the rich and the middle class. U may check in other places like Oluyole estate/extension, Moor plantation G.R.A others are (Iyaganku, Alalubosa/Aleshinloye etc) If u are the type that likes to relate with ur neighbours, u may not like any of these places as ppl are mostly locked within their compounds, You know naija stuff now? Felele layout is another good end, very lively area where gate or no gate, neighbours relate with neighbours. It is generally a middle class neighbourhood, it might be possible for u to find a nice flat with not so exorbitant price but u have to watch ur kid very closely because there is a relative mix of bad influences in Felele. For example from my own opinion, Felele is the headquarter of Yahoo boys in Ibadan (Don't know if the situation has changed but in the early 2000s, u will be scared at the pace of yahoo boys and wild girls in Felele but there also good girls there pls dont misunderstand me. If u however would like to stick to Abeokuta, goodluck, if u are able to find a nice place, it might not be very bad decision also. |
I just dont like the nose
So what's it with her nose? Oh oh so tell us about ur own nose. |
she not bad at 40. c'mon ppl! |
I think its about time the ACN worshipers begin to realize that they have allowed themselves to be fooled and u must be a fool to have allowed someone to fool you. I am not surprised with all this cos I know that the fact that ACN is capitalizing on PDP's failure can not automatically make them the better one unless they prove it. The question is, can this be how they want to prove it? There is still time ahead for many things to unfold. |
Would their parents claim that they are putting them thru internship to gain practical experience? learning how to be better entrepeneurs when they are grown? I am trying to imagine what excuse they would pop up to justify sending those kids out. |
Nayah:Never mind, the marks are completely ignorable so it aint a thing at all. |
Nayah:U are right but for me, a woman's attractive outside has to raise my curiosity to wanna know the inside. U ve gt good attitude on NL ur comments are always calm and never outrageous, isnt that a reflection of your inside? I blv u r not faking it are u? |
Nayah:Look Nayah, I have discovered ur picture long before now. 1st it was this one and then another and back to this one again. Baby u fineee, I am a fan. |
If you are based in Nigeria, learning languages might not really be the joker u want. If u want to mobilize ur career up ward through learning languages, U really need to expose urself more to the international environment by studying abroad. U can not have the kind of job u are dreaming by just learning language at an institute somewhere in Nigeria. U have to get a degree from it. For example a degree in french language in a University in France. I am saying this because I have experience with learning languages. Believe me u have to be at the very high level of any language both in writing speaking (with good accent) and listening before u can stand a chance. Let me tell you about this, It is a common thing that Europeans are multi lingual, for example most Dutch also speak German and that means u can expect that an average Dutch would speak 3 languages English German and of course Dutch. Not including many who even speaks 5 including Spanish and French because there are instances where the father could be German, Mother French but they have lived many years in the Netherlands and she studied in Spain. This is a common scenario to most Europeans and they speak this languages with good accent and without struggling for words so u have to keep in mind that you would compete with people like this since u are looking for a job at international level. Look at it that you don't only want to learn languages but you want to study languages. For those who think that you can be studying masters in something else and learning language at the same time. Thats a good advice but try it only in countries like Spanish in Spain, French in France German in Austria/Germany. Never think that you may do masters in UK or USA and learn another language, it would not be very easy. U learn language faster and better in an environment where u must use the language which u are learning only. I wish you goodluck. |
Aregbeshola has spent several months explaining how it is practically impossible and economically infeasible for him to pay 18000 min wage. For him to suddenly come out of the blue and say he is not only going to pay 18k but 19k at this moment is a blatant shame. This implies that he was probably lying about his inability to pay then or that he is being mischievous about his present offer or that they dont even know what they are doing. Having observed such a high level of inconsistence, I really can not be convinced that the govt is being honest with this all of a sudden abracadabra ability to even pay more than demanded. 19k is not across board. so is that what the workers are asking for? Why not implement 18k and make it across board and stop misinforming ppl with insidious headlines on newspaper? To those who are already rolling on the floor for Aregbeshola, are u that cheap? Well good luck to you. We would see how it turns out and in fact, very soon. |
its a common expression in Naija but its counter-logic.
, and at the end of the day, end up sounding Ridiculous! In fact, I don't have a problem with them, rather, they make me laugh.
