Well, now I'll give you a very good reason why you should

He Will never attempt to use you for ritual

Hahaha! We commented on the topic yesterday.

A good person will make a good Christian As well as a good atheist.

An inherently not-so-good person will most likely continue as he is, be he of any religion or no religion. Not everybody experiences an "on the way to Damascus" moment.

God bless you for the enlightenment sir. that brings me to another question is the ogiso lineage different from other era of Obas or it was just some break? Besides who was Queen Idia and how important was she to Benin history? thank you so much
The break between Ogiso era & post Ogiso era is where the famous Benin-Ife/Yoruba controversy stems from. It boils over from time to time.

Over the years, I have commented on them. They are still here to be seen.

To begin with, I am a Benin-Yoruba hybrid & clarity & truth in the matter is most important to me than one side striving to claim superiority.

Ogiso Owodo was the last Ogiso. The break came because there was no heir. This is called the interregnum period.

Prince Ekaladerhan was the heir to Owodo. But the Prince's step-mother called Esagho schemed to get him killed. Faking a message from an oracle priest, and claiming that only his death would avert disaster in Benin. Sadly & reluctantly Owodo accepted it, for the welfare of his Kingdom.

But the Isiewmenro (Royal Executioners) who took the prince to the forest to sacrifice could not bear to kill him. They made him swear an Oath never to return to Benin but run for his dear life. He did. He travelled towards Owo (70 miles due North-West of Benin). Then he moved towards a village now called Ife. Ife is also roughly 70 miles West of Owo. So he entered Ife from the East. A prediction Ife people had been given about a ruler coming from the East.

With time back in Benin, Esagho could not produce an heir as she had hoped. Owodo later got suspicious and sent other emissaries to the oraclist. That was when the scam was revealed. But it had become known that Ekaladerhan through divinity was in fact alive but he could not be traced in Owodo's life time. So the crown remained vacant. So Evian (now Ogiamien family) became ruler as the most powerful local chieftain of Igodomigodo (as Benin was called then) but NOT a King.

In the meantime, Ekaladerhan has found fortune in Ife & made king. He exclaimed that "Izoduwa" meaning I have been favoured/achieved my destiny. This became Ododuwa. A similar corruption of name would happen to Ododuwa's grandson in Benin two generations later. The exclamation "Owomika" in Youruba became Eweka I of Benin.

In fact my relative is the duke/chief of the ancient village (actually now part of Benin metropolis) where Eweka made that exclamation in About 1170 AD. In just over a week from now, The Crown Prince will be making a similar exclamation (at exactly same spot as 800 years ago) near my relative's ducal palace. That exclamation is what his Title & name will become for life.

And all his children and descendants will henceforth bear that name as surname. Except his first son who will chose his own regnal name when crowned in the future.

Ekaladerhan was known to be alive already so the search continued for decades. Until he was traced to Ife. He refused to return, having sworn an oath not to. But he sent his son "Omonoyan", basically meaning beloved child. What was called Oranmiyan by Ife people.

Oranmiyan was accompanied by yoruba courtiers including Oloton. Chief Oloton today remains in charge of Royal ancestral shrine. Oranmiyan's son Eweka I restored the monarchy in Ogiso line. Benin people were ready to keep the stool vacant for decades then, just like they did while Ovonramwen was in exile in Calabar for 17 years.

So Ife people came to be very welcome in Benin & seen as our relatives. Even after Oranmiyan left.

Now we all know Yoruba versions of Ododuwa: from coming from the Sky to coming from Mecca. Judge for yourself what is scientifically possible.

Idia was the mother of Oba Esigie. Esigie ruled from 1504 to 1550. Idia was the wife of Oba Ozolua. Both her husband and son go down in history as successful warrior Kings/emperors.

She was a warrior Queen Mother with her own Royal Regiment personally commanded by her at war front. She played a major role in helping Esigie expand the empire. Europeans even accompanied Esigie to wars in Eastern Yorubaland & extolled Benin war tactics including Ifianyako (encirclement) of enemy soldiers.

I so much admire the Benin tradition especially after watching invasion 1897 though I am a Yoruba boy. my question is that is it every first born of the king that automatically succeeds the predecessor and secondly who succeeded oba ovoramwen nnogbaisi I hope the lineage was not broken?
Oba Gha to kpere Ise!
Thanks sir.

Since the imperial time of 1440, it has again been by male premogeniture. First male automatically. The line was not broken in that even when a first son did not have an heir, his brother succeeded him. Oba Ovonramwen remained Oba even in exile from 1897 to 1914, though the British tried to install a stooge while Oba was in Calabar exile. Just the idea alone was roundly condemned by Benin people as a sacrilege. In fact nobody was even silly enough to dare come forward. The British quickly and quietly shelved it.
Upon his demise in 1914, his first son became Oba Eweka I I. He rebuilt the ancient palace destroyed by the British in 1897, though only now about one-quarter the of the size of the one destroyed.

That Eweka I I title was poignant because he came to rebuild the monarchy akin to how Eweka I rebuilt the monarchy after end of Ogiso era. Eweka II began the 4th phase of Benin monarchy called the Post Imperial era.

First was the Ogiso, Oramiyan/post Ogiso and the Imperial eras.

Upon coronation, the current crown prince will be the 70th monarch beginning from Ogiso, spanning about 2000 years of history.

I'm proud of u bro...you know ur history

The day the brits will release official documents people will know just hw sophisticated the benin city were THAT Of all the places in Africa explorers visited only benin was christened a CITY, only benin had STREETLIGHTS, Only benin had well planned and wide roads etc

The brits decimated our forces in the punitive expedition and ensured our history was muddled.

Imagine people do not know it's country name: BENIN KINGDOM, capital: EDO location of the palace area within the captial: BENIN CITY

Imagine in this current dispensation we are regarded as a landlocked country... which landlocked country can a "bight' be named after? Bight of benin proves benin WAS NOT LANDLOCKED & we had not even acquired lagos then o.
Very apt sir. Well before Benin took hold of Lagos Island under Oba Orhogbua,, Oba Olua sent his son Prince Iginuwa (Ginuwa) to proceed and become the "Ogiame (Lord/Duke of the seas) in a place now called Warri. Today, Ogiame remains the title of Olu of Warri. Effort by the last Ogiame to ditch the title only five years ago that he had become a born again Christian, led to the Royal family asking him to abdicate for another member of the family to take over. He quickly realised it was a bad idea.
So the idea of landlocked is a recent stuff. Sadly. History is deliberately twisted or omitted in Nigeria. Luckily on museums in London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and many cities across Europe and America, Benin history is given a special place. I never miss visiting those museums when in any of those cities.

hopefulLandlord:
you've lost track of my Posts

my point is that you may never know whom an atheist is in real life especially in an ultra religious country like ours

have you ever wondered why there are so many atheists on Nairaland and you rarely meet them in real life? because they are in your churches, they might be sitting beside you during services, they might be the ones to hold your hands and pray when the pastor says so, that pastor might be a closet atheist too

those examples of preachers just details some who were regarded as "born again" by their fellow Christians, not one Christian knew they were atheists until they came out

its you who needs to comprehend my posts better
This is a very valid point. We have a country where keeping up with the Jones's is a normal thing. Trying to blend in & go with flow. If you cannot beat them, join them mentality.
As of today, looking at how rotten our society is, and yet everyone is a pastor, deacon/ness, Haji/a, mallam, one can conclude that only very few practice what their religion instructs.

Surprisingly, the one who does not fool himself or fool others by saying he's an atheist might actually personally subscribe to far superior humanitarian ethos & morality. But being different from the mainstream of zeitgeist is enough to earn you the tag of evil.
Yes, you can say it is not just by deeds, it is by holy spirit, grace & salvation. But who knows who will actually make heaven/paradise until the very end?

I remember preaching on the streets as a kid. Back then, some people were still openly pagan. Those pagans often proudly & openly explain the logic & origins of their worship. Even though we disagreed, most just wanted to pray for protection, favour & progress using the gods as messengers to the almighty. Yet they were roundly dismissed as evil. Atheists face same issue.

Most atheists acknowledge and even like the moral teachings of the religions. They just do not believe that such basic instructions on love/morality/humanitarianism needed to come from a higher heavenly Being for humans to espouse them. Since many atheists in classical antiquity already put forward more or less similar values for mankind & society.
For us Christians to understand ourselves better, we need to listen to the views of others: pagans, atheists, other faiths, etc.

Because if you really want them to see your point & maybe even become Christians, a high horse, holier-than-thou & dismissive attitude is hardly helpful.

Some of the most blessed saints were previously non-believers. Apostle Paul comes to mind.

Why do you bother to argue with tribal bigots?

Benin people know their history. No modern political arrangement or influence in the current Nigerian cacophonous entity can even make a dent on it.

Benin won wars upon wars in imperial times. Having lost to the British in 1897 Benin accepted defeat like gallant warriors.
That the previously vanquished & colonized people would want to wipe out nagging feelings of inferiority & try to rewrite history was expected by Benin. But Benin people are not bothered. Empire was given up in 1914 in order to restore the monarchy, as the British demanded.
In line with that agreement, Benin is committed to refraining from claims to those previous territories, vassal lands & colonies.

But any official provocative comments or announcements by senior figures from any tribe will be confidently dissected with clarity and confined to the dustbin by Benin people & historians.

I don't understand why the face-off between Tinubu and members of his political party has been reduced to an ethnic war. Tinunu took the biggest gamble of his political career by aligning with Buhari to win the 2015 Presidential election but sadly he is getting the short end of the stick

He was a beautiful bride prior to the election but he is slowly being made a pariah by those he helped secure victory. Such is the vicissitude of politics.

Tinubu's motives for teaming up with Buhari's CPC were never about the advancement of the Yorubas. If it were so, he would have insisted that the devolution of power and true federalism be made a cardinal part of the APC's campaign manifesto. Two agendas the Yorubas have always pushed for.

It is heart warming that his political foes have thrown their weight behind him since the political onslaught on him began. I only hope he is learning some salutary lessons and will build on this open show of support by his hitherto political adversaries.
You don't? Really? Is there anyone who did not see this coming? After APC was formed and even more before presidential election, many of us predicted this would happen. When APC people attacked us and labelled us Tanoids, I thought they were just being partisan and pretending not to know. What a surprise!
We predicted that by the time Tinubu is outsmarted by the politically savvy North it will all turn tribally ugly. We cited examples from history. Akintola/Awo feud fuelled by the North, IBB/Abacha/Abiola issue. Etc. Then the SW controlled media would go into tribal overdrive.

Sadly, SW only threaten and shout before they are pacified. To be used and humiliated again next time by the North. They never take a decisive and permanent action to control their own affairs.

How long can this cycle of servitude, rebellion/threat and appeasement continue?

I think SW, despite all the braggadocio when pushed against the wall, still inwardly underestimate themselves. They seem not to realise that an independent Odua Republic led by Awo from the 1960s would by now be by far the most developed country in Africa or even in the Southern hemisphere.

A country that would have carved out lucrative niches in financial services, education, IT, medicine, legal services, the services & entertainment sectors, tourism, transportation, real estate, culture & agriculture. This would have more than made up for low petroleum resources.

Surprisingly they chose to be an appendage of backward, conservative, power hungry feudalists. shocked

Lol

Buhari has disappointed his zombie followers.

Buhari, El Rufai, Amaechi, Amosun, Fayemi, Fashola and the SGF wants to use Saraki to checkmate Tinubu loyalists in the senate.

They want to cut Tinubu to size and render him politically irrelevant.

But Tinubu will not back down

Tinubu is going back to realign with PDP

Even Saraki does not trust Buhari and his cabal, he knows they want to use him and dump him, Saraki will keep his alignment with PDP intact and strong.

The battle for 2019 has begun

The only surprise is that it took so long to quash the charges against SP & SVP. It wasn't about guilt or innocence. It was Tinubu's personal project to show Saraki who's the boss. Saraki's coup scuppered Tinubu's move to control the senate, since he cannot control Buhari.

Left to Buhari, he would leave NASS alone. If they fool themselves fighting over positions, it even strengthens the executive. Because NASS would have less credibility.

Now, with Tinubu's recent moves towards PDP, CPC wing of APC now see an open fall-out with Tinubu inevitable.

CPC wants to regroup, align with PDM/PDP faction of APC & appease ANPP. Now they believe they have fractured the Lagos boys/SW ACN.
They want to have all of the North pulling together again. Freeing SP & SVP is very expedient at this point.

Do not be surprised to see Nnamdi Kanu freed next. cheesy grin grin

I guess Tinubu quickly saw things will happen this way. Buhari showed his hand early enough. Running a one-man show for months. Then he refused all ministerial candidates put forward by Tinubu. With Amosun even having more say in cabinet selection. grin cheesy

We were here warning ACN wing/Tinubu before election in March 2015 but they would not listen. When you help the North win power, to them, you have only just given back their birthright. Nothing more. cool

Let's enjoy the unfolding drama.

Well Coventry University gets a lot of funds from Nigerian students so it is understandable why they opted to use your sister's picture. On the contrary I still wonder why a first class material will choose coventry uni over the russell group universities or more elite universities in the U.S. I remember this guy who spent 8 years failing and struggling to earn his bachelors. Fast forward with no work experience I later heard he was undertaking master at coventry uni. You even find people with no work experience getting accepted to the school's MBA program. People with lower than third class grades also being offered positions at coventry uni. Personally, I wont advise Nigerians to enroll at coventry uni. Just my opinion though
God bless you.

Such a combo of brain & beauty should be in a Russel group school. There are many in London. Since she's probably not in actual Coventry town but in the London satellite campus. I know the place well. London School of Economics (LSE) would be more like it. Or London Business School.

We Africans should aspire more when it comes to choosing schools abroad. I sincerely want the mentality of thinking that "elite schools will not admit you" to stop.

In my time leaving 9ja, we aspired to go the very best schools in the world. That was how we were brought up and taught at school. That with top grades finishing secondary school, we were just as good as the best students Europe, America, Japan or any country had to offer. It remains the same today, just that now, our self-confidence has plummeted seriously.

However, fees in the elite schools cost a lot more. So I can understand if that is an object.

What about a tenant that's leaving in say 2 months time? What contribution is the landlord making for the community? But he can increase rent whenever he likes
My dear, by the time you have built your house, maintained it & rent it out, you will understand it better. There are all manners of costs: roof defect, gate broken, tenants' kids smear walls, borehole pump defective, vigilante fee, etc.
A tenant left with over six months unpaid rent. He was allowed to pay 6 monthly instead of yearly because his family were same church members with relatives. He had to be evicted with a lawyer that cost nearly as much as the rent he did not pay. Double loss. Now how can such a person succeeded in building his own house? I don't even have to swear for him. That is reality out there. Many bad troublesome tenants. They'd rather engage in a legal battle instead of using the money to pay rent.

If he's leaving in two months & the road is graded next week, he will still have 1 month & 3 weeks to enjoy it. He can reasonably negotiate it with with his landlord. Landlord can then get part of it from the next tenant codedly.

Roads and electricity are not temporary. The tenant can pack out tomorrow.
Road grading is basically an annual thing. Done once the rains subside.
Transformer wahala is almost a monthly thing in many areas too. So they are hardly permanent in 9ja setting. Since the tenant's rent contract is not running out today or tomorrow, he has to pay. Remember the landlord is not govt either and has probably provided a borehole at his own cost.

But I for one will split the bill with the tenant. Because if I need to evict him he cannot be able to say he paid Road grading cost alone.
