Etinosa1234: If u are really from Epe, yeah... Benin never ruled over Epe.. it mainly had influence over old Lagos... The First reports that supports Benin influence over old Lagos was the report by Josua Ulsheimer whom someone is trying to deny by saying he was lied to by the Benins who were there as at then.. But if Josua Ulsheimer happened to be lied to as a report being written 200 years later said, then can someone explain how Benin got to have influence over the ruling dynasty of Lagos...
The First sign of influence over Lagos was the letter written by Oba Akitoye to the British where he clearly stated that the Benin had the undisputed authority to choose the next Oba...
Secondly, when his letter was not granted and finally deposed, Oba kosoko who became the next Oba was approached on abolishing the slave trade, Oba kosoko replied that Lagos was under the Oba of Benin and it was only the Oba that was able to deal with foreign issues
Thirdly, when kosoko successfully repulsed a British attack, consul Beecroft wrote to the Benin that kosoko had to surrender .. which talks abt the Benin influence
Lastly, when In 1860, Kosoko persuaded the Oba of Benin to send messages to Dosunmu pressing him to allow Kosoko's return to Lagos. Dosunmu, now under British authority, refused this request and noted that things were "not as in former times when Lagos was under the King of Benin to whom annually a tribute was paid
Don't allow ur self be deceived by people that only know how to write
AreaFada2 Samuk Gregyboy Edeyoung Your history of Lagos is spot on. Epe was of no use to Benin.. Benin was not looking for Lebensraum to grow. We needed trade corridor and access to sea or Lagos to allow two pronged military movement. Especially under the sailor King Orhogbua. He had learned at the Royal Military Academy in Lisbon how the Portuguese used navigation to excel both militarily and commercially. |

I don't think she expended this kind of energy on Yoruba- Igbo, Yoruba -Nupe, Yoruba -Fulani... The only way she'll do so is if they had contact with Benin
Most Benin people and foreigners already know how great Benin kingdom was ... The foreigners who saw our works marvelled,
Al-Jazeera compared our Benin to London as at then and said it was better than london , BBC did reports on our culture, the first foreigners (Ruy de Sequeira)known in Southern Nigeria came to Benin in 1472 during Ewuare, The Dutch came and were impressed
R.E. Bradbury researched our culture, Bondarenko spends time on our culture
We even had an embassy in Lisbon as at 15th century... It's only normal to have people jealous abt it. People are only jealous abt what they don't have.. so they'll either find away to trash it or associate with it...
Engaging with her was good tho... It made me know more abt my culture ... Prior to that , all I knew was the invasion and our works being stolen... After ,then I found out that Benin had influence over present day Edo-delta states up to parts of Ondo, Lagos, Anambra, Kogi... It's normal to have people dedicate their entire life to trash it... Imagine, a whole minority tribe with such great history... Its enough to create jealousy Na..
The funny part is that due to the fact that she can access more info abt our culture due to where she stay, she will only tell us abt the part of our culture that favors her or deny vehemently abt the part that exalts Benin culture..... If we should get hold of the books she quotes at times, we'll see many things that praise the Benin culture
Having seen how great my culture is, I'm planning to visit the library in my area so that I can learn more abt my history...
Benin is so broad that it isn't covered by one historian......
Oba gha t'okpere Dude I have been educating her predecessors since 2011. With PhysicsQED who stopped coming on Nairaland many years ago. Degema and many Rivers people are Edo. The Amayanabor clearly said it when Oba Ewuare II Rivers. The video is here on Nairaland. Edoid languages are 22. A 23rd one is still debated. Igede people of Benue State are Edo people. They even left Benin fairly late, in 1515. |

samuk: Agbor people of Delta state bears Obaze.
Since Yoruba centered their relationship with Benin around Ife, most part of our debate should be centred around Benin/Ife relationship because most other parts of Yoruba were under Benin colonial rule.
Let's the true Ife people come out to defend the Benin/Ife relationship, not descendants of former Benin colonial subjects or descendants of slaves that were returned back to Nigeria by the white man.
You will hardly find an Ife indigine on these thread because the Ife they are defending here was created on paper and have nothing to do with reality. Modakeke people next door to Ife will tell you even better. It is among distant Yoruba desperately seeking connecting with ur-people of the area that created Ife as Yoruba home. Slave returnees largely. Proper Oyo people won't even buy into that nonsense. It is the biggest coc,k and bull story so far. |

Aboks: The ways of abokis are different from other nigerians Until the French Normans conquered England in 1066, the English did not use surnames. It would be John from York or Peter from Winchester, etc. Among Africans use of surname is relatively new too. It came with colonialism properly. With Islam Africans began using X ibn Y, Y bint Z for a daughter or A Dan B, M bin N, etc. So I guess up North affiliation to city or town of origin was perhaps for some still important. Remember too that aristocrats or founders do historically bear names of their domains or even founded towns and gave their name to the villages or towns in the beginning. Their descendants can still be bearing such names. Some at least. |
