Guy you for post the full article Nigerian to build Iraqi railway By Nicholas Ibekwe September 30, 2009 07:58AMT print email A Nigerian engineer, Jude Igwemezie, has won a $500 million contract to build a monorail network in Iraq. Mr. Igwemezie trained and lives in Canada; he also heads TransGlobim International, the engineering company that won the bid. The contract is to construct what is described as “a viable rail transportation network” for the city of Najaf. The network will connect three Islamic holy and historic mosques in Imam Ali, Kufa and Sahle. Frustration of selling good ideas in Nigeria An elated Mr. Igwemezie told NEXT in a telephone interview that the project is billed to be completed in three years, and will be built in two phases. The first phase, he said, will cover the design, construction and operation of the system while the second phase will involve the expansion of the system and its extension to the Najaf airport and the final phase. Mr. Igwemezie, who said he has been involved in negotiation with Nigerian officials in the last 18 months to construct several rail lines in the country, disclosed that it took “only two months to get the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) executed with Iraqi officials”. Hinting at his frustration to offer his services to Nigeria, Mr. Igwemezie said, “as a Diaspora person, I kept coming back, knocking, to help Nigeria. On the other hand I can’t knock forever.” Problem of railway in Nigeria Mr. Igwemezie, who wants to build a standard guage railway system from Lagos to Calabar, believes that Nigeria is a place where railway service is going to be “profitable and successful because of its size and population and because we have a demography similar to that in Europe”. However, he said, the bane of railway in Nigeria is that “we have brought the wrong people to help us”. Gains of railway Mr. Igwemezie, who lost his father in a road accident, believes that the railway line will take pressure off the roads and rid them of the unnecessary delays and loss of lives associated with road travel. He described the Benin-Ore road as “a killing field”, and said with the construction of the East-West corridor, there is no reason why someone who lives in Benin cannot work in Lagos since it will only take two hours on an express line to get to Lagos from Benin. |

I am not sure what would have happened but i still maintain what i said earlier here asha 80:However you also know Awo had a chance to remove the west from nigeria but did not seem to do so ala 1967.The excuse i keep getting for that action was that Hausa military personel where much in lagos. Hoewever i keep asking what if Awo decided to break the west from nigeria(whether there was agreement with Ojukwu is immaterial to me) would the north have faced the east and the west at the same time?Your guess is as good as mine. |
FBS if african teams do not play well they will be eliminated simple. Paraguay beat hosts Egypt with ten men. Cameroun wasted chances and got hammered 4-1 by USA. |
More reason why you see quite a number of igbos who view Azikiwe as a hopeless nationalist. However your article says Azikiwe was still peeved at what happened to him in 1954 when Awo came with the coalition proposal. I guess it was a case of once bitten twice shy. |
Because area boys are not interested in making a living the hard way. Some of them are married to these women but will never lift a hoe in their lives. They arrest these women mentally and turn them into a beast of burden. I believe that illiteracy is one inch away from retardation but their husbands are largely illiterates too but were able to maneuver their wive's psyche into absolute subservience. Both their employers and their owners are to be blamed here and Nigeria will never progress if we continue taking advantage of women. This warning also goes to other sectors that hold women down just to protect their territories.
I totally disagree with you.The women that do that are they doing so at gun point? |

themano:I often ask apart from building roads what else where Ngige's achievements? KnowAll:Exactly. |
Azikiwe was a hopeless nationalist.I guess being an igbo born in the north(zungeru) and growing in lagos gave him a false sense of nationalism. |
Funny thread. The alhaji should talk like a matured man. |
koolchicco:He meant venezuela will beat tahiti which will make it impossible for nigeria to qualify as one of the four third best placed teams. |

Non-indigenes Raise Alarm Over Hisbah Activities In Kano By Oigbochie Clifford , Special Correspondent, Kano LEADERS of ethnic communities resident in Kano State have again frowned at the activities of members of Hisbah guards, the state Sharia enforcement agency, accusing them of brutalising non-muslims and non-natives resident in the state. This was contained in a press statement issued by the ethnic leaders and signed by Chief Michael Idika and Prince Femi Adegoroya, chairman and secretary, respectively. In the statement, the leaders claimed that "it is obvious to all, including governor Shekarau of Kano State and his government that the Hisbah guards have concentrated their activities on the non -natives in Kano." According to the leaders, Hisbah activities have become a source of terror, nightmare and intimidation to non-Muslims in Kano, adding that they have continue to frustrate the business community in the state, especially the business of alcoholic drinks. "These Hisbah men storm the federal high way on daily basis attacking and impounding trucks suspected to be carrying alcoholic drinks as well as cause body harm on any one associated with the seized items by brutalizing them." The group also said that there are sufficient evidence to back their claims and describe such attitude as "violation of the fundamental human rights of non-indigenes in Kano." They also accused the state of discrimination against the non-natives whose rights "are daily trampled upon by the militia men called Hisbah." The ethnic leaders stated that they were surprised that, a group of Ndigbo in the state who called themselves leaders of non-indigenes hired a group of people to pay solidarity visit to the governor during which they denied knowledge of any form of maltreatment of Southerners in Kano by either state apparatus or the Hisbah guards "just because they are seeking favour from the government." The statement faulted the remarks credited to the leaders of the non-indigenes association, stating that "Let it be on record that Chief Boniface Ibekwe and Dr. Jimpat Ayelangbe are not representing non-indigenes but themselves and their families in this regard. "For the record, they took that decisive step of writing to the authorities on the activities of Hisbah in Kano because they saw, they touched, they smelt and they felt real pains inflicted by Kano State Hisbah on people and their lawful businesses, which collapsed like a pack of cards under their very nose. Even now it is worse; Hisbah has now resulted to real brutality. Their presence and operation around Sabon-Gari have increased. They traced trucks of drinks inside Sabon-Gari and hijacked such trucks. These they do in a very provocative manner that may lead to the breach of the peace because they injure and maim the drivers and conductors in the process. "On August 8, 2009 a team of policemen arrested a truck conveying Don Simon table wine at Igbo/Frances road junction, Sabon-Gari, Kano and took it to Police Headquarters, Kano. And up-till now the truck is still with the police, who have refused to release it. They are not aware of any law empowering the Police to arrest drinks on the road; they feel that there is a conspiracy to oppress them (non-indigenes in Kano State) and destroy the means of their livelihood in Kano.
