On a purely historical basis, the story appears to be of Sumerian origins.

If you read the "Enuma Elish" the Epic written on seven tablets during the Sumerian period, the similarities are clear to see.

We have to ask, what was considered scripture at the time the author wrote that verse (either during Paul's lifetime, or as more widely believed after his death) ? we do not have far to look 1 Timothy 5:18:

The author of 1 Timothy has quoted Deuteronomy 25:4 " Thou shalt not muzzle the ox...." And;
The yet to be compiled saying of Jesus now found in Luke 10:7 "The labourer is worthy of his reward"
At the time the author of 2 Timothy wrote that verse, NONE of the Pauline Epistles would have been considered "Scripture" not even the gospels.

Justin Martyr writing in the mid -second century (around the time of Marcion) informs us :
On the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits; then, when the reader has ceased, the president verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things . . . We have to wait till the middle of the second century for the first Christian Marcion to compile the first NT canon.

The implications are clear, "scripture" at the time of writing that verse consisted of the Deuteronomical canons, the writings of the prophets and selected sayings of Jesus.

Lastly, problems do exist with the "original" manuscripts (there aren't any originals)

They are only as good as the intermediary, there are huge contradictions for instance, the Gospel of Mark does not agree with the Gospel of John about the time or day and events leading up to Jesus' death, both cannot be right.

If one of them got it wrong, it does tend to make you wonder....what else they got wrong ?
