Today's feast day of All Souls gives us an answer to some questions we have inside of us. Why pray for the dead? Why offer mass intentions for them? Why visit graveyards? These make sense if we believe the foundational truth of Christianity: "Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too, might live in newness of life." Because Jesus is raised into newness of life, there is hope for us to enter into fullness of life. John's gospel echoes that truth: "It is the will of my Father that everyone who sees the son and believes in him may have eternal life." Primarily that raising up is God's action in our lives. It is the raising up of our hopes and dreams and sadness and tears. It is that end time summation of all we are and hope to be. Like a reunion with a long lost family member or friend, the will of the Father is to have us with Him. But there is a second raising up that we celebrate today. It is the raising up of our prayers for the deceased. Because we love them, because they have been so much a part of our lives, we raise them up in prayer to God, hopeful that just as our love made a difference in their living, just as our care raised them up to "all that they could be" on this earth, so our love will raise them up to union with God. It becomes not just Jesus' desire that he should lose nothing of what God gave him, but our desire that God should lose nothing of what we surrender back to Him. So we visit cemeteries, we offer masses, we pray the rosary. We 'raise up to God' the gift of our family members, friends, and neighbors. So today and during this month of November that is dedicated to remembering and praying for the dead, spend some time in prayer lifting up those who have gone before you. Spend time being lifted up by their lives and love. Let their continued care for you while they were alive, lift you up to all that you can be. May the souls of all the faithful departed through the Mercy of God rest in perfect Peace. Amen |
Ubenedictus: @babestell, on a side note i hope you know that submisivenes in married life is mutual, d bible didnt just say 'wife be submisive to ur husbands', it also says 'be submisive to each other.Bros I totally agree, but let's be realistic how many people preach this 2 way submisivness. How many people who use submisivness as a reason for women to behave in a certain way actually think about the the vice versa. |
I think one of the reasons why the practice of women covering their hair is losing ground and probably fade very soon is because it is being enforced for the wrong reasons. Most people talk about submission, authorithy or power. In this age and time when females are accomplishing as much as their male peers, those words are a big turn off. At least it is for me. Is it the hanky some ladies use or flimsy scarf that is now the covering of hair, the only reason I cover my hair in church is as an act of humility before God, just a little way I show him that I depend totally on him and I only do that in front of the blessed sacrament. Just my own take Also considering the verses below, is there any other way we can choose to intepret the context. Perhaps to mean that the issue is subject to the prevailing culture of the enviroment 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. |
Nwuyag I hope you still practice what you learnt from Opus Dei. The society has been very instrumental in my growth as a catholic. Now I do my day to day activities with the belief that the Lord is blessing me through my actions. In my few years on earth, I have learnt that we may not always agree with what we hear but sometime we have to just obey, that is the virtue of humility and meekness. Everytime I hear wives be submissive to your husbands, I wanna scream and shout but when that time comes I will obey. There are many things about faith that require us to just believe even when it seems too incredible. I pray whatever crisis of faith caused you to turn you back on the truth be resolved soon. On the issue of preaching, I hope you know that the lenght of time used to preach does not determine the quality of the message. I have gone for masses where the preiest preached for hours and I didn't learn a thing, I have also gone for masses where homily was just for 5mins and it made serious sense. |
Ukuts gp: catholics are rather hilariousI hope you are aware that you are fighting a losing battle. There is no version of this conversation/thread that you will come out tops. The fact that you just seek a rope to hang the Holy Church from is glaring to all, such hate can never result in good/success Peace |
See my Kano people here o! I served in Kano and my parish was St Loius Bomoai. I think it was in Kano that I finally locked into the charismatic portion of my faith. I thank God everyday that I served in Kano. Infact I have to call Fr Monday now |
This OP is hilarious ![]() |
onetrack: The original Bible is not in Latin, but rather Hebrew and Koine Greek. However, those languages were not accessible to the Christians of the Western Roman Empire, and previous translations into Latin had been done in a piecemeal, haphazard fashion, and so once Christianity reached a critical mass in the west in the late 300s, a priest named (St.)Jerome was commissioned to create a single, comprehensive translation of the Bible into Latin so that people would understand it in Italy, Spain, France, etc. This version (the Vulgate) is the one that has been used by the Catholic Church ever since.Thank you very much |
Logicboy03: You said the catholic church uses latin. And you were talking about translationsYou saw translations and you automatically assumed Bible, actually you are not wrong for that thought process. The sacred liturgy and a lot of our prayers and music were originally in latin, also a lot of the early Church fathers wrote in latin. I was referring to this when I made the comments. Translating these into english or other languages resulted in different meanings. Also see Onetrack's comment above for more clarification |
Most churches in the east don't do lottery. At least I haven't seen any. |
Logicboy03: Who told you that the bible was written in latin? lmao......misinformationPlease kindly highlight where I said the Bible was written in latin. Or where I even said Bible |
maureensylvia: as for me, i cant remember the last time i went for confession. it was like maybe 2009 although am a staunch catholic but people said that its not good some said that its good. what is your opinion?Am sorry but if you have not been to confession for 4 years then how can u confidently call yourself a staunch Catholic. Regular confession (once a year) is a commandment of the church. You freely of your own will choose not to partake in the grace Christ has made available to us thru his holy Church.Your first mortal sin. The 7 deadly sins are anger, envy, gluttony, greed, pride, sloth, lust.......can you confidently tell me that you are not guilty of any of these sins no matter how small?. What of the sins of your past life, especially those which make you despair? Every sin against purity (chastity)is a mortal sin eg impure talk, careless use of bad words, watching porn or acts of indecency, listening to indecent music, dancing suggestively, dressing to distract or to get attention, suggestive walking etc fornication and adultery are not the only sins against chastity. In Opus Dei we are told to go for confession at least once a week!!! 4 years is too long. Do you know how many indulgences you are missing out on just because you have not gone for confession, please schedule an appointment with a priest for counselling then you can attend confession or try and go to any opus dei center close by, you will meet people who can help you there. |
Bazaar is an opportunity to sell plaintain and co to parishoners, I grew up in St Dominics looking forward to harvest every year because I was sure of going home with one gift or the other. I heard someone tried to start the spinning wheel game here and some peeps said it was gambling . On a lighter note, it seems that plaintain has over taken yam as the symbol of harvest and bazaar ![]() |
usermane: tbaba has a point, yeah but it is not that i haven't been doing my homework. It is true that some arabic words are difficult to translate into English but then again, how many of such words are we talking of? And how much does it affect the message or meaning of the verses? The message of GOD is not in the language. It is reasoning and sincerity. I have seen muslims who don't understand arabic, yet they understand the Qur'an better than some who understand arabic. Qur'an 56:79.Actually I think you are a muslim who has decided to question the traditions on ground, my post was for those who support vigorously the tenets you have dared to challenge, they need to give you and other muslims a reason to continue to practice your faith in a certain manner. The homework assigment is for those who wanna break your head for daring to say what is in your mind. |
Yes na....I went to the Chaiplancy at CIWA and they did their fruit harvest today but everything was within the normal 2 hours for mass and the father still gave a wonderful homily on sacrifice and thanksgiving. |
Am catholic and I know what it means for my faith to be mis-understood and our actions mis-intpreted. Most times people do it out of ignorance and just pure prejudice. It falls on us as adherents of the faith to correct them and place them on the right part. Most of what we practice in our religions are a result of culture in our locality. The OP has highlighted some key issues which am sure a lot of young muslims are asking themselves, these questions need answers and reasonable answers at that not threats of beating up or what ave you. Tbaba has responded to that of the use of Arabic as the language of Islam, I totally agree with him cos the Catholic Church uses latin a lot( a dead language) and that is because most english translations do not carry the full weight and meaning of the same word in Latin. Lemme not hear anybody threatened anybody else on this thread again. Go and do your research and come and educate the OP, and others who may be reading this. |
The parish here in PH usually has 6 masses on sunday, but for bazaar and harevest they have one mass that starts at 8am and closes at 2pm or later. Imagine a parish like St Dominic's Yaba doing that of course people will port, there are more efficent ways to do harvest and still raise funds. |
![]() Sal C, you know our Church respects traditions and the tradition in PH is that on the day your parish has harvest, port to another one. Becos the mass will drag and drag and drag. As a well trained catholic babe. I have to comply ![]() |
People like me who are planning to go to another parish because 2moro is harvest in theirs ![]() |
^^^thanks |
Nice topic. Am guessing those who contributed work with the civil service. What of those of us who don't contribute, can we still access the loan and how much is the interest? |
@ OP, well written article. - hope you are ready for the forthcoming onslaught ie if the mods don't hide this thread. Mosy of the comments you made also apply to other religions in their own context. |
vanhelsing: @ OP please let your family know what you are going through..don't bear this burden alone. ![]() |
They should make him take vows of poverty and serve with the nuns in impoverished countries. |
Sal C dear, it is well. God that gave doctors the knowledge to do surgeries shall direct their hands. Speedy recovery! Rich4God if I flash u, will u send me credit too. ![]() |
Better ask questions like what are the theological virtues, catechism class type jor. ![]() On another note, a thread asked us to write our favourite bible verse, mine is Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1 vs 9. Whenever I read this verse, I feel empowered to go about my day's activities. I can do what I want to do, go where I want to go, take over the world if I so desire. My Father has commanded me to! |
