We've had several waves of Japa over the years, what I've seen is them making money in the West, coming back home with bright ideas, only to fall under the wings of the career politicians that were in charge of the country during their sojourn.
CareerRe: Understanding The Japa Syndrome And What It Portends For Nigeria by bigtt76(f): 2:08pm On Jun 22, 2023
Good stuff.

I believe someday, those who japa would provide the much needed re-orientation the country needs to succeed.

Dogalmighty17:
THERE has been a rather marked loosening of immigration controls by most Western governments in the last decade. A great number of our intellectuals, skilled peoples and professionals in Nigeria have moved out or are planning to do so for a promise of a better life. That's fair.

As much as it appears as if the West has opened its doors, the underlying truth is shocking.

Anyone who has undergone a rudimentary economics class will of course have fair knowledge of what is called a tax base. You need a vibrant working population that can be taxed to run an economy. Most Western economies however, are running into a demographic time bomb. They are facing an aging population and a lesser number of young people in the workforce. The greater number of the aged puts pressure on the social welfare blanket. With fewer young people paying into these social welfare programs, with fewer young people carrying out economic activities, the social safety net gets depleted faster.

When an economy grows to a certain size, it needs a certain population figure that must be sustained otherwise everything crumbles. The death rate in the West is greater than its birth rate. Japan is already panicking. China recently reversed its 1 child policy. The damage however may appear to have been done. They won't wait for their population to grow because it is impossible at this point. It is faster to import immigrants.

Furthermore, an aging Western population needs healthcare professionals. They do not have enough young people going into these fields. Even worse, the performance of young people in STEM courses across the West, has been dropping. Recent US test scores is an example.

So what does the West do? They resort to 'siphoning' professionals all across Africa and Nigeria is a major focal point.

The West is drawing the best out of Nigeria. Indeed they are hollowing us out. It is slavery 2.0. It will get worse. The West will keep incentivising our best to come over and Nigeria will keep suffering as a result.

In effect, Nigeria has no hope of advancement. Not when the West is ready to absorb the best we produce. It is not their fault however. Our government and their incompetence are the cause.

This capital market investments ....my thoughts is only throw in what you can afford to lose when the markets come crashing or if you are open to long term investments cheesy

ukay2:
I just think of putting my little thoughts on this discussion.....

If you're good in the capital market, invest the funds in equity market in Nigeria via you are stockbroker.

You will achieve both capital appreciation and dividend payments until some selected listed companies.

Some of us invested in Access Bank shares when it was trading at N6 to N8 with dividend payments of 50kobo to 80kobo per share few years ago.

An investor with 1m units of Access bank at N8 and 800k dividend payment 2 years ago is now getting N1.5m dividend in 2022 dividend payment and capital appreciation to N14 per share currently.

If you're not interested in the capital market, make effort to invest the fund in the FGN bonds (not FGN savings bond) through your stockbroker or through your bank ( l use stanbic ibtc bank).

Some investors with 10m invested in FGN bonds 2050 at 18% yield in 2018 are getting 1.8m bonds coupon payments (900k every 6months) till maturity (2050) and get your 10m back.

There's possibility of increase dividend payments and price appreciations in good profitable companies in stock market ( remember to monitor the quarterly performance of the company) while your capital fund and coupon payments in FGN bonds are static till maturity ( remember inflation and naira devaluations..but this may not affect you much since your giving the funds as your naira charity obligations)

You can decide to be paying your naira obligations with either the dividend payments or coupon payments in the above two scenarios.

For me, l go for the stock market since l know how the stock market works (17+ years in the market).

If you feel like investing in NYSE, some good dividend paying stocks with upto 6-10% dividend yield in the NYSE market exit. You can be using the quarterly dividend payments in dollars, convert it to naira and settle the naira charity obligations.

Many ways to play the card....
TravelRe: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by bigtt76(f): 9:05am On Jun 21, 2023
Its a good option and was my life-saver during the pandemic lockdown ...it happened that the period coincided with the maturity and I was just getting alert for the principal sum every month until fully paid.

What I did was every month from my salary, I subscribed to the bond and got like 5 different subscriptions with different rates and the interests were paid almost at the same time so I could compound them and use for something else. Those were the days when agro-investments was a thing. Not now any more.

The cons I have with the bond thing is inflation. By the time you get back your principal sum, would it still be worth what it was before (interests inclusive), so if you just have loose funds you don't mind tying down, its worth trying else, waka pass ...my thoughts though - I am not a financial advisor, always do your due diligence.

TouchOfSpice:
Hello Sir.

Thank you so much for your response.

The FGN bond option sounds cool and secured to me. I will give it a thought.

Since it's a lump sum investment, perhaps I would save up like 2-3 months equivalent and close my eyes to try it out.

Thank you.

People have gotten jobs based on these certifications though. But I hear you, a PRINCE2 or PMP certification would carry more weight but it all boils down to what you know and can bring to the table with your employer. You may have the PMP or PRINCE 2 certificates and not be able to deliver while someone with a Coursera certificate would do better.

FamilyRe: I Stood Up To My Father by bigtt76(f): 3:18pm On Jun 16, 2023
You allowed your ego to belittle your dad, not good. What I would have done will be to assure him that I'm not into any illegal act and that people would always talk which is fine and that he should not worry you are trying your best to not let it happen again... Calm him down.

Don't you ever try to make your dad feel little about himself or not being able to provide for the family and stop feeling woke. He meant well for you.

DamianDd:
My dad is a really good guy, I love him so much and he's gentle most times. Though he gets angry sometimes but he's reasonable about everything he does.

I came home 11:30 which is very late and I knew that and I even hated it too that I came home this late so I was trying to avoid him even when he asked to come to his room because I had a gut feeling that things won't gi right.

But I ended up going to get my charger that was with him, then for the first 5 minutes in he was making sense about why I came home late and I was agreeing to it that it's true

Then all of a sudden he starts saying "what will people think?" "Neighbors are watching" "they'll start saying god forbid, like father like son" "I nor fit let my pikin be like this boy" "which kind family be this, see when their son dey come house?" "People are watching, people are judging" and even more words and it started getting annoying to me, then he said they will say "see when this small pikin dey come house"

It was at that moment that I shut it down, I've never been that way to him but it was so infuriating, I told him I'm not a child I'm 18 which is legal age, I work for my money, I make 50k to 300k a month on my own; no neighbors give me food when I'm hungry, the landlord doesn't clean my eyes when they hurt from viewing my phone too much so I don't give a Bleep what they think of me. I told him to not put all those orientations in my head because it affected me alot when I was younger and it made me timid and shy and scared of being myself or having different opinions and that's what I'm trying to fix in myself and my mindset now.

What I do feel bad about is last year I paid for the house rent and packing when I had alot of money, I brought it up when I was talking to him and said "I paid for this house with my own money so who is landlord or the neighbors for me to be sacred to come in and out of my own home, I know what I did is wrong and I'm sorry but don't put those bad thoughts in my head" I shouldn't have said that though by bringing up what I did for family. He only called me back and said "don't worry I won't talk to you anymore until I use my own money to pay for the house next time" I didn't say anything because i know I was wrong and nothing good would come out of talking back, I just left his room.

What's your thoughts on the matter?

Na scope ...they too want a cut cheesy

OldBeer:
These are certainly exciting times in Nigeria with the massive upheavals happening in all sectors. And Nigeria's premier station has not been left behind.

Any observer of the polity will notice that NTA has been having a major resurgence in the past couple of weeks.

For some time now, NTA has been at the forefront of breaking news in the country. They were the first to break the news of the sack of EFCC boss on Twitter, garnering surprises from people who weren't even aware that NTA is on social media.

During the inauguration of the National Assembly, NTA even offered its viewers dual view to ensure they catch both ceremonies as they were happening simultaneously, a feat that has never been done before in Nigeria.

This has led Nigerians to wonder what is happening at the hitherto moribund broadcasting giant.

Is this a case of a new NTA or the resultant effect of BAT's body language?
Only time will tell. But for now, everyone seems happy at NTA's resurgence.

We end this report with what @TheoAbuAgada, a known PDP supporter, said back in 2021, "Any president that can revamp NTA can change Nigeria."
