I have a very close beautiful female friend and it never crossed my mind to sleep with her.

The idea about men's performance is the concept behind the phrase "women are born, while men are made".
A woman, simply by being born with a pair of boobs, a vagina, and a womb, already posseses most of what is required of her to survive and even thrive on earth.
Required by who? men.
Man is instinctively wired to provide, cater and protect any woman, if she can simply be available to satisfy his sexual cravings.
A female, simply by existing, already posseses an intrinsic sexual value.
All females posses sexual value; not to every man, but can be to any man. After puberty, a woman tries to package her self (make-up, push-up bra, plastic surgery etc.) to increase her sexual value. the higher her sexual value, the higher the resources she commands.
A man has to pay a certain price if he desires this sexual value. There's no free sex anywhere. you pay one way or the other, directly or indirectly.
A female easily transitions from being a child taken care of by her mother to a lady being taken care of by any man, simply because her existence commands it.
This is not so for a man.
A man has little, to no sexual value. he Posseses no intrinsic value.
He has to do something of value to someone or himself to be rewarded with resources to survive, because his value is extrinsic. He has to be useful to someone or at least, himself.
A man has to earn to survive. He gets little or nothing free. if he can't do anything valuable, he gets nothing.
A man's value is a function of what he can do, and the resources his skills commands.
A man who cannot do anything for himself to survive is a useless man. He has no value to anyone, including himself.
A male transitions from a boy to a man based on his capacity to do. A female transitions from a girl to a woman based on her sexual capacity, which comes at puberty.
A female has to be something to get something, but a male has to do something to get something.
A man having to do something to get something is what is meant by performance.
now, why and how a man performs to get the sexual value of a woman is what distinguishes an alpha from the beta.
An alpha performs solely for his best interest. He has to perform to well enough to afford what he wants and the freedom to do as he pleases. Women are not his goal for performance, they are side benefits as reward for his performance. women are attracted to a man's performance. The beta performs to get women. women are the reason for his performance, hence he has to exchange his resources gotten from his performance to get a woman's sexual value.

This topic has for a while now been of keen interest to me, as I wish to learn more about this in order to be able to handle my interpersonal relationships with the female folks appropriately.

For example, there is this course mate of mine that is quite nerdy. I do not find her attractive, but I kinda try maintaining a platonic relationship with her mainly because of her academic ability (comes in handy especially during exam period).
There is another that isn't nerdy, but I'm just keeping things simple with her. And there's a reason I'm kinda friends with her as well, and it's nothing sexual.

One girl annoyed me this evening I swear, I just saw her as I was coming back and I decided to approach her. Her appearance was just simple, she wasn't even wearing make up.
