Bevista: That's fine by me, as long as prepaid meters are available. Scrapping the fixed charges is also a welcome development.
As long as people only pay for what they actually consume, Nigerians should learn to pay the right price for a service. That is the only incentive for investors to commit their funds for long term improvement of the sector.
The telecoms model is a good example of how appropriate pricing stimulates service, competition, jobs - and ultimately - lower prices. That model won't work in power because there is no competition there just monopoly and price fixing |

omonnakoda: The question is not whether it is a good idea or not .This is not an ideological issue but a practical one. Nigeria is not China and Nigeria does not have the resources or capacity to police its borders. We cannot stop guns and drugs coming in so what are we talking about? Let us focus on what will work in practice not in theory. Even under a military government it will not work how much less a civilian one. There are far too many problems to police in Nigeria,Armed robbery Boko Haram,Illegal refineries, kidnapping and the vast majority f our police are corrupt.
You cannot stop rich people spending their money because of ideological hang ups what is important is to focus on the big picture. If rich people have FOREX of their own and want to import garri that is fine just Tax it . I would have no problem with a 1000 naira cup of German garri if 900 naira of it goes to government. Even today a litre of petrol in the EU is well over 300 Naira and much of that is TAX!! while we are fighting for subsidy so effective tax is a smarter curb on demand than banning.
The idea that China closed their border totally is a bit exaggerated anyway China has always been more advanced than Nigeria. Our workforce needs major overhauling and upgrading. Nigeria has signed up to WTO rules and has some obligations ther too so we cannot just use bans for everything some of the people we are trying to export to will react so we must think carefully about consequences before acting. But yest the objective should be to increase our productivity and without electricity power some bans will not make sense so we need to act in national interest but do so taking everything into consideration and acting wisely You have a point but if the rich man is so need of the bread they should bake that here ...importation kills the economy Now national interest is more important than business interest and that is why USA will always support apple than smasung We have to be frank here ...policing the borders isn't the case .if we can't police the borders then we don't have any business been a country then let's split this nation ..we must develop a political will to make things work Is Nigeria bigger than Brazil, China, India and Russia yet these countries have great economy It's simple ..you have to make the interior department work and if any shop has any of the banned goods it should be traced and the business closed and also the owner would be treated as economic sabotage This is it..we have to suffer ourselves a bit to enjoy We can't continue living like this The Blackman hates to sacrifice |

mykl01: Nigeria sounds Strategic enough don't you think Please let's not wish others war. Liberalise the economy, allow Naira to find its value, decentralise government, allow southern ports to function, reduce the price of maintaining the Senate, House of Reps and Presidency, sell off Presidential fleet and encourage Bubu to stay at home, make agriculture more interesting, tractors, harvesters, fertilisers, remove fuel Subsidy and government regulation on fuel and fuel issues..... We will never do any of these things, just cosmetic nonsense by Emefiele who is teleguided by the body language master... Ndi ara!! Gbam You have also said my point .it seems that Igbo have a different economic approach .this ypubsaod is what I have been saying all these while . why should dangote be importing rice instaef of investing in rice paddy across Why won't they allow others to compete ..why won't they close dome borders and slow the guys in aba to sell their bags and allow hero beer to sell in Lagos But the Nigerian government will always run to west to beg them of money and aid. For heaven sake we have the market and we can produce most of these things ..even cars ...we have to stop this wanton importation Dont try fixing naira let it find its bearing If we are a producing nature .....then lower value of naira will make our product cheaper but this is it |

omonnakoda: I don't think closing the borders can work rather there should be a smarter approach of effective duty collection and effective market surveillance .If rich people want to eat bread from London fine just make sure government taxes it and collects the tax e.g $1 per loaf. For those items that are not negotiable government should carry out extensive public enlightenment and give an amnesty perion e.g 6 months and warn people in the markets about which products are prohibited and give them time to adjust . After that start seizing. Even that will not eliminate it 100% but will me more effective. No one takes cocaine to the market to sell and it should be the same for anything government wants to prohibit. Right now the thinking is if you can bring it in then it is OK but when it is impossible to sell frozen turkey anywhere in the open that would be a game changer.
Right now the body language of government on banned items is ambivalent Do you know China closed it border with the policy that what they can't produce they don't need . this was in 80s . I strongly believe in protectionism than this fathom globalisation If the rich man wants to eat bread from London ..he and his friends should tell the London bakers to come to Nigeria and bake that bread here in Nigeria We can't open our borders ..we can't compete ..those dudes have comparative advantage This is the only way Businesses would be given 1 year notice to adjust . we have to make sure that other local firms must compete |

Well I can't tell you the way to raise your kids. So if your daughter came home with 4th position you'd beat her ? My daughter has been begging me to buy her a bike ..I promised her I will do that . I love her so much and my only girl..but we had an agreement ...I told her if she takes first position I will buy her the bike . we agreed in it . Guess what , she came 3rd and she was so ashamed to even say she came third and she knows I love her so much and she loves me more than mum ..but we had an agreement ...I told her she didn't come first so she can't have the bike this Xmas .she understood and quietly went to her room to commence reading . but took her to shoprite bought her clothes and others but the bike isn't on the list You have to train your kids that nothing is gotten on a platter . they have to work for it and that is what I am introducing . that's the way my dad trained me and it worked I also flog her or get her grounded . God forbid if she comes fourth in class...hmmmmmm that holidays she would not play with her mates , she will not watch cartoon network .he will bury her self in her books . that's another effective way I punish her ..sometimes she beg me to spank her instead of grounding her. It musnt be floging |

omonnakoda: There is no strategy that will work in the short term. Nigerians need to tell themselves the truth: In terms of aggregate world production we are not productive but we like to consume and do so with an incomprehensible sense of entitlement. The only thing that will push up the Naira is external demand for Nigerian products and reduced consumption of imports in Nigeria. Nigeria economy was not strong enough to allow people spend money abroad on VISA cards that was a mistake. That should only happen with PREPAID CARDS i.e you buy the card and load the dollars NOT spend from your account. We cannot continue to blame government for everything. Indians come into Nigeria to make orange juice while we sit on our lazy butts. Even those who steal government funds take it abroad to buy houses. South Africans come to open TV stations and Supermarkets. Ibos pride themselves as businessmen but the core of Ibo business does not bring dollars in rather it helps us consume and spend even more dollars. We need to stop blaming government and look at ourselves. Imagine all the money airlines take out of Nigeria yearly The number one strategy is simple . REDUCE OUR APPETITE longthroat for imported goods. There is no right to consume what productive people in other countries produce. How I wish that people can think like you...we tend to celebrate foreign things ...some idiots where celebrating shop rite , palms and pep malls ..they will go for dstv and allow hitv to die . I just keep asking what the hell is wrong with Blackman When the Igbo produces something they call it Igbo made now they are crying The bottom line is to close the borders do not allow anything we can produce to be imported . anything edible , cosmetics and clothes ...we can't allow importation of furniture not even tooth pick . no provision or groceries should be imported . cars should be brought in in completely knocked down parts and re assembled here ..most electronics should also be in knocked down parts But the Nigerian man will want to enjoy where he didn't suffer always dancing and drinking then sex without doing anything . we are just consumers Without this we can't have string currency We don't even refine common oil The naira wont be strong if we don't do this Take it pls |

yudee233: It is a pity that the gurus in economic matters are sleeping. Just take a closer look at the developed countries you will see one denominator "focusing on finished goods". Everyone is crying that the Oil price has fallen so low we can still mitigate this by revamping the refineries and encouraging investors to build more refineries. This alone will reduce 40% pressure on dollars request in Nigeria How can they focus on finish goods where they call any Nigerian good Igbo made ...so we keep importing and naira keeps crashing This is a good development... We should start producing but the average Nigerian hates locally made product and everybody thinks oil. Mark my word...oil will never rise again. Because we have alternative energy sources and cars are not consuming much fuel these days especially Japanese cars .now who wants to buy your oil with shale gas that USA have and other countries that doesn't give a damn about OPEC isn't laughing neither So who will bail us |

YourMain: Beating your kids is lazy parenting. Your child will have learnt nothing. And one day you'll reach a stage where you can't beat them. Then they are free to do all the things you used to beat them for. If you have your child pls don't beat him but my mum beat me and I am useful today and I have a daughter I beat her if she misbehaves She hasn't taken 4th position in her life before and she is in primary 6 So I beat and flog I can't spare the rod |

If the child is still under 17 ...The best way to tame the child is to flog the delinquency out of him but
If the child is adult ...stop giving him money or food. If he persist..disown and dis inherit him

coolscott: You can't take these people seriously. These are the same people that said Lagos is no man's land in a bid to further go on to claim it saying they built it.
Have you not noticed that Efiks, Ibibios, Ijaws, Igalas, Tivs, Kanuris all live in Lagos state? Not one of them ventured that kind of disrespectful error (of declaring that Lagos is "no man's land" ).
When the rest of Nigeria sees the Igbo man doing that, they form an opinion of him naturally.
The Calabar man will know naturally that if the capital of Nigeria had remained calabar the Igbos would probably be calling Calabar "no man's land" by now.
Igbos cannot misbehave again and again and when resented on account of that, complain in self glorifying self pity that they are hated because everyone else is envious of them.
Most of these misdemeanours actually amount to diplomatic self-amputation on the part of Igbos because it takes away from their collective diplomatic equity. Point this out to them and they turn on you. Proverbs 9:7
Their fathers made a grievous mistake by not talking to the ancient dynasties of the south-south before assuming their sons and daughters would go and die for them in a war they knew nothing about. At a time when they should be repairing these old errors it was surprising to hear Igbos further complete the diplomatic self-harm by declaring:
1) That Ijaws were Igbos
2) That our ancient dynasties to whom the white man paid taxes on arriving our shores are a part of Ojukwus 1965 attempted contraption, Biafra.
How can a people's political fortunes improve, when they engage in a permanent process of eroding all diplomatic goodwill? Lagos is still no man's land.....the only egun people owns badagry and they are not Yoruba ...awori are migrants and they still not Yoruba So why die on Lagos matta |
