mrvitalis:Lol, is electricity, petrol, internet or streaming free in Canada? In the hot summer my brother electricity bill in Houston hit $400 a month, Insurance for car $100 a month, insurance for home owner, $200 a month, Gardner $60a month, water $70 a month, gas $40 a month. Phone bill $30 amonth, rent $2k a month. Point is if you keep $500 out of that $5k consider yourself lucky. To each his own sha. Yes things will work abroad, environment is pristine and all that. And those things do matter, so I can see why people will want to go. |
mrvitalis:Haba!!! Which N7k food are you eating? And no you don't need N2mln to N5mln in Nigeria. If you earn N1mln a month net in Nigeria (all other things equal) you are probably better off in the short to medium term than someone who earns $5k net in America where rent for a 3 bed alone could take 40% of that. However if you get a N4mln 3 bed in Lekki, you have spent 33% on housing. And with fewer bills to pay. To put it another way, someone earning $5k a month may struggle to buy ticket to come to Nigeria (credit card aside) more than you can afford a ticket to fly to America with your N1mln. In the long term though because of devaluation, that's where the challenge will be. |
Seefinish:I agree. Unfortunately that idiot Buhari set the precedence!! |
juman:The objective is not to reduce gas emissions. Its to reduce time spent in traffic and improve productivity which enhances GDP. And it only makes sense when it is financially viable. Oyo state is a relatively poor state. I was in Ibadan just this last weekend. From Challenge to UI didn't take me 30mins. Ibadan does not have much traffic. Especially now that high petrol price has severely limited cars on the roads. And what city is that. Ibadan is just about 2.5mln people. I'd like to know the city of 600k that has a train system. I am not talking of tram or street car in just the city center o! I mean a proper train system like what Lagos has. A lot of American cities of more than Ibadans population don't have subway or any form of train mass transportation at all. Neither does any city in West Africa if Im not mistaken. And that is capitals of countries like Accra and Abidjan that harbor more wealth and you are talking Ibadan that has almost no industry. If you aren't working in UCH , UI or Civil service in Ibadan (and maybe some of the few banks) you have no sensible job in Ibadan. This is Ibadan traffic at 12pm on a Monday! green everywhere. Why would I then spend N200bln on train. I'd rather spend N10bln on CNG buses. Its about getting value for money, based on our own economic and social realities, not wanting to be like London for the sake of it.

Believeintruth:He said 80k in ONE MONTH!! |
juman:Not every city needs it or can afford it. In Nigeria maybe only Kano and Onitsha comes to mind. Ibadan certainly doesn't need it. It's a sleepy, poor town without much traffic. |
Siberia01:That's not really the point. We are happy we have it now. Simple! The fact that Lagos should have had this many years ago is topic for another day. |
soccerlite:What did I say in that post that equated to fish brain? Because I don't agree with you. Lol I can bet you that on no level can your brain match up to mine in socio-political and economic discourse. Do you know the multinational organisation's I've worked for and that I belong to? I beg go and sit down. You and I aren't on the same level. I know that for a fact!! |
SafetyFirst:Na real rogue nation. The Level of impunity in Nigeria is scary!! |
soccerlite:Many people collect rent and don't pay a dime on it. I have 3 properties and I don't pay shi shi |
ogododo:The article headline/topic is misleading!! The topic says higher taxes, but the article sys more revenues. They are not the same thing. More revenue can be raised by increasing the collection efficiency and bringing people into the tax net, while taxes rates are exactly the same!! |
mfm04622:Combination of both actually |
WhisperedNoise:Abi young people are becoming a nuisance to themselves!! |
Afobaba33:Are you minding them. Nigerians type before they look and think!! |
Omooba77:NURTW as a whole should be banned across Nigeria as a whole. What value do they add exactly? I do not see 1 positive thing they add to citizens or government. Yet I can see like 5 negatives!! So why are they even in existence? |
DREAMHOMES6970:So you expect there to be pictures of every single body on the floor abi?? Na wa o!! |
Philipmoon2:The report says NAF (Nigerian Airforce) dropped bombs on them, you are asking why the military burned the bodies?? Na wa o!! |
obiekunie01:The very first picture on the left, no be gun be that? With explosive that powerful to dismember bodies that way, it would do the same to machine guns. Besides the military folks could very easily have picked up any weapons still deemed usable before the pictures were taken. You must be one of those who always claim that while military always go after bunkerers and IPOB/ESN, they never attack herdsmen and militants in the north. Hope you have seen now? |
Zandena:"Whose primary objective is to cripple public institutions"! Really!!! This statement alone exposes the quality of your critical thinking and reasoning ability! |
jimmyolasun:Very good point! I had almost forgot about the time China was also offering big bucks. They have calmed down now! |
flexyrule:I agree that it will be a challenge, but don’t be too negative. Main One has data center in Lagos. So also Galaxy backbone I think, which is government owned. Like I said, if the will is there it could be done. |
The Uber app is expensive because as a public company they are constantly pressured by Wall Street for bigger and bigger profits. If we make ours non profit oriented. Just focused on break even and a bit more for upgrade in new tech etc, it could be done. I want to believe ride hailing drivers across the country should number like 200k. If 200k people pay N20k a month in a year as service charges to the app, thats N48billion annually. |
flexyrule:Where there is a will, there is a way. We have data centers here in Nigeria don’t we? We can use another data center somewhere else say Ghana or SA for redundancy. Theses technologies are known, we don’t have to depend on Oyinbo for everything. After all the Netflix server for west Africa is in Ghana or is it Ivory Coast. |
SoNature:I hope not. Listened to the guy speak before. Not a lot of real understanding of issues in my view. Motivational speakers tend to say a lot without saying anything. I rate Donald Duke over him. |
braine:Funny enough, this is where FG could help people. How about if the Ministry of Technology commissioned some tech guys to develop a Nigerian version of Uber that is owned by the government for which drivers pay 5%. The technology is already available. This is how the FG could help Nigerian youth. Besides it helps keep the money in country. Why would Uber take 35%of our local money for what? |
Oyindamolah:Just give him the advice! You don't have to insult him by saying he isn't smart!!! |
OmoOgunOriginal:Did Abeokuta people come out to protest for Mohbad!? If so you folks should call on those same folks to come out to protest against your governor. |
metodman:There are reasons for that. Hydro power generation is better during that period Weather is much cooler and electricity conducts better in cool weather, so transmission losses are less Due to cool weather people don't use AC as much, so demand is much lower, so there is more electricity to go round. In June, July, August and September I could sleep with just fan, but in the last few weeks, its been getting quite hot so I am now using AC more. The grid is more stable due to all the reasons above |
wunmi590:Has nothing to do with the governor actually. It's all about the capacity of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). You can see that most areas under their network Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara are struggling with availability of electricity. The problem is that asides IKEDC, EKEDC, Abuja DISCO and maybe PH Disco, others are serving pretty poor states, so they are struggling with their revenue profile, so no money to invest. |
Terrible in my family house in Ashi-Bodija in Ibadan. If you see light once in 4 days, apparently that's a good outcome ![]() Hoping that the progress we are seeing in Lagos will soon spread out to other parts of the country!! |
stepaside1:Even if a Power Act is passed by a State, it doesn't magically mean anything will improve anytime soon. Is it these our bankrupt states? There is still plenty of work to be done before we see improvements. In the case of Lagos, the following still need to happen: Lagos Electricity Regulatory Agency will need to be set up LERA will need to engage with NERC and DISCO's on its planned regulations Except LASG plans to lay new parallel cables to everybody's house, it will need to engage EKEDC and IKEDC on how best to achieve this improved supply. To improve supply, more electricity will need to come from somewhere. This will need to be sorted out. This costs money and takes time. Even if Lagos plans to take electricity from an existing plant somewhere that has excess capacity, a transmission line will need to be built to deliver it to Lagos. Before its built, it will need to be tendered, contract awarded before a contractor even starts work. These state laws will take minimum of 3 years before we begin to see any impact. |
wunmi590:Capacity and Generation are two different things. Besides the headline is also wrong. Its not National grid capacity that has grown to 14,000MW. Its actually installed generation capacity. However, electricity is much better in Lekki, Lagos. In Ologolo area of Lekki in the past 3months, we've been averaging 20hrs a day. Lagos will naturally benefit more from the improvement because Lagos has more people with capacity to pay. |
