Thank you o...Aunty Canny was making seem like I was lying. While I do not want to do the whole breakdown, I feel it's only fair that people are aware of how bad it could get especially for single folks. Besides, I know that newbies start with survival jobs and so it will get better. The goal is to get rooted and move towards the better.

I said let me add this....how will one add that one bought a winter coat for almost 400CAD? Isn't that from the same little income? That's like crazy!
I didn't say you were lying. I said the fact that that is your reality doesn't make it the reality of significantly more persons. If you are only saving $200 a month, then you are doing something very wrong. For example, buying winter jackets for 400CAD. Really? 400CAD? If you are only imagining saving $200 a month and you are in the same breath thinking of buying winter jackets of $400, then I have no further words for you.

By the way, when I dey naija, a lot of my circle were earning way more than $1400 per month....don't use your limited experience to judge others. Na survival make crayfish bend biko.

Your points are not valid. If that's your reality, it's not the reality of thousands of other Nigerians. You are just one of the few struggling to eke out a living.

Travel / True Cost Of Living In Canada by CountVersailles(f): 2:34pm On Sep 16, 2022
Some recent threads coming up here have just been plain, unadultrated lies about cost of living in Canada or some other advanced countries. But I'm choosing Canada because it's the one I know best about that it's just outright lies. Many of them will post and will start claiming that you can't save $200 per month or that bills will kill you and you won't be able to save more than $100 after all bills. Nothing is farther from the truth. Don't let all these dreamkillers and wretched Nigerians who are looking for company in their naija hellholes lie to you about the realities in Canada. Things are much better than they claim.

Typical cost of living in Canada if you have your head screwed on right and are not one of those crazies looking for social media approval or tryin g to show that you have finally arrived after living in extreme poverty in Nigeria.

Accommodation --- $1500 (this is the average you pay for a good, clean place to stay). Obviously not in downtown areas of any city, but why would you want to stay downtown anyways? Who are you seeking to impress? You were not staying in Victoria Island or Ikoyi before you left Nigeria. Instead you were staying in Egbeda, Iyana Ipaja or some other Lagos shithole, but suddenly you are in Canada and you must stay in central Toronto. Hunger wey you reach you dey do press-up. Except you are living in Alberta or Manitoba where $1500 will get you something super high-end, in places like Toronto this gets you something relatively comfortable and YOU WILL BE FINE.

Internet - $85 (this is high-end, super-fast, rarely disappointing internet). Not mtn that only works in the night, or spectranet that doesn't work that well in the Egbeda you were staying back in Lagos.

Hydro - $50 (except you are cooking every single day, you shouldn't pay more than this) And why should you be cooking everyday anyways? Don't you have something better to do with your time?

Car insurance - $200 (most people will pay only $200 for car insurance). But if you are working minimum wage, you are already pushing it. If you don't have absolute need for a car, there's no reason you should be buying one. Not everybody drives. Parking is expensive. You don't automatically translate your life from nigeria to canada and think because you were driving in Nigeria you should be driving in Canada. But let's even say you are stubborn and want to buy a car. Okay, I have included it. Bus pass of $50 per month should do you. There are incentives to buy bus passes for cheap if you are a low-income earner. Low-income earner go still earn 18m naira net per annum o! Wait until I get to the earnings. But let's sha add you car, since you are stubborn anyway.

Parking - $85 per month. Extreme case. Most times it's less.

Groceries - $300. You shouldn't spend more than this in a month. Except you are one of those stupid Nigerians who think they must be going to African store every time and buying Naija indomie when significantly cheaper walmart indomie of various flavours yapa anyhow.

We are already at $2220. If this is your monthly spending, you have a problem already. But let's sha say this is what it is.

Now, how much do you earn? Let's say you are doing one of the lowliest possible jobs working in walmart and telling people 'thank you for coming to walmart" everyday, and helping them checkout and putting on a forceful smile. Let's just assume. And you combine that with car wash cash jobs no weekends. There's no reason you should not be making at least $3000 net in a month. This is the least. Possible to make more.

So, now we have arrived at someone doing one of the poorest jobs and living one of the most comfortable lives, and he's still looking at saving at least $700 every month. So, where are those $200 or $100 ideas coming from? Or those who are claiming you will even be in debt? It's just preposterous to suggest that you can't save.

Now, at $3000 monthly, you are earning $36000 net in a year, which is just ridiculous if you are a professional. If you look well enough, educate yourself well and market yourself too, you will get a professional job (even if na customer service or something else), and you will earn net above $40,000. There are plenty Nigerians, and I mean plenty, who are earning net above $40000. Now, think about how much more you can save since this comes down to $3300 monthly. You will be saving at least $1000 every month!

Obviously, these calculations are for a single person. If you are married just multiply it by two as long as the woman is not the lazy type who just wants to sit at home and not work.

Additionally, there's no reason you should be incuring too many costs if you are earning little. Some of the things you are chasing in Canada you did not have in Nigeria. But suddenly you have arrived and things must change? Cut yourself some slack.

In conclusion, don't let anyone lie to you. You can save a lot of money working in Canada. This is truer if you are a working professional. Most working professionals earn north of $80000 gross. Think about how much more they can save even with those expenses above. And that's just for one person. If it's double income with a couple, you are looking at $160,000 gross. Honestly, by the end of the month, you guys will think you won a jackpot. Little wonder you see Nigerian couples here buying 4, 5 houses on mortgage and paying without hassles. Do your research cheesy

There is really no place like home but they have made Nigeria grossly insecure and unlivable. In naija, a single girl earning 600k can easily save 500k without hassle, in Canada, 600k is about 1200CAD which is like 1/3 of your monthly earning. Yet, you can not save beyond 200 CAD per month because of bills! There is really no place like home....may God rid Nigerian of evil politicians and people ruining the country. Let there be a new Nigeria!
Hello auntie, can you please explain this your mathematics? Somebody is earning 3600$ per month and can’t save $200? Did you even go to school at all?

I have lived in Canada and can explain to you in case you don’t know and are relying on typical rumours to form an opinion.

$3600 monthly. Let's say you live in Alberta. You pay rent of $1400 which is a super comfortable one bed already. Power/hydro - $50, internet - $75, groceries every month - $300, car insurance-$200, gas- $100. You'd still have $1400 left which many can't even smell in Nigeria in a month. You can change it to naira and hold it in a Nigerian account if you so desperately want to hold valueless naira. And who wants to anyways?

And even then, all these spendings are even extreme.

Make una dey calm down when una dey make these claims just to justify una naija wretchedness

Whatever you do, you want to diversify and not put everything into one investment vehicle. Commit around 30-40% in something safe like Mutual Funds. Mutual Funds are essentially risk-free investment because it's mostly invested in T-bills and other AAA-rated companies. So try a mutual Fund provider like SFSFund.ng who offer up to 10% returns and allow you remove your money anytime without any charge. Plus you still earn your interest.

Next you can commit another 30% investing in Nigeria's technology ecosystem. There are a lot of upsides if you can get in early investing in good tech startups. Figma has just been acquired by Adobe in a $40bn deal at $40 per share. Investors who got in early at $0.088 per share have earned a staggering 454%. If they had invested as little as $5000 then, their money would be worth over $270k. So investing in technology companies is a good plan.

Lastly, invest in something that can give you access to cash. Think about a small distributorship or retail outlet. That way, you have safe investments, investment in good companies and an investment that you liquidity.

Early investing in technology companies is a game of chance. Some never take off and you lose it all. That Figma became successful is no guarantee it works all the time, and finding that technology company is like fishing in the dark. I've been there, so I know. I'm better off buying crypto right now than buying into early start-ups.

Amalekki:
There is something called "mind your own business'. People naturally do what works best for them. There is no single reason.

Flights coming to Nigeria are almost always fully booked and most of the passengers are Nigerians abroad. Some don't even go to their parent's 'homes' outside of cities with airports and this is often with their parent's consent to avoid evil village people and plain users. I know someone that comes to Nigeria at least twice a year without stepping out of Lagos to his home state, not even for any family burial. Safety first.

Also, many Nigerians abroad don't make noise or do social media flaunting. It's the struggling ones that tend to do that to mask their reality. There is hardly a weekend you don't have multiple Nigerian destination wedding filled with Nigerians flying into the Carribean Islands especially Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Costa Rica etc.

Yes, some don't have papers. Some are struggling. There is no single bucket to fit all into. We have the rich, the okay, and the struggling as we have everywhere, being abroad does not change that.
I wish everyone can listen to this beautiful piece you typed. But knowing Nigerians, they'll all just ignore it and go ahead with their constant bleating about how abroadians don't have money and don't visit the country.

lavylilly:
Let's remember that a company where an accountant could be fired on the spot is a one-man company, therefore all these verify stuff may not work. If the accountant had delayed the payment, leading to loss of a major customer, he would still have lost his job. In such an organization, the one-man is the ultimate decider in every transaction, therefore the only real control that works there is confirm from him in all situations, even if by telephone call.

I have worked in one such company before in which the CEO expected instant adherence to his oral instructions, though he would authorise the transaction post-implementation. If the accountant insists on a written or verifiable authorisation before implementation, he would be fired on the spot
This is true until the one man tells you he didn't give you the same instruction he called ten minutes earlier about. Doing anything as serious as sending huge sums of money to vendors or clients without express written instructions (which should also be backed up with a phone call) is unacceptable in any organization, whether one man or not. In fact, that one man will respect you more as an accountant if you insist on documentary evidence each time before carrying out any instructions. Working without instructions will lead to diasaster soon enough for that one man to fire you regardless. Lesson: always request documentary evidence EVERY SINGLE TIME!

What exactly is part 3 necessary for? Has this thread suddenly run out of space that it can’t go on anymore? I’m still clueless why your guys do this, opening multiple parts to these threads and not allow it go on for as long as possible. Have things changed so much for landed immigrants that there’s suddenly a need for part 3? I’m yet to get a sane explanation.
Nairaland has multiple threads that have run into hundreds and even thousands of pages without the need to open a new “part”. When i see or hear Nigerians complaining about the canadian system, I wonder if they are just typical ingrates who can't grow out of their Nigerian mentality.

a) You pay taxes and you complain every single time. Yet you aren't generating your own power, nor are you paying your kids' school fees. Power comes to you at a fraction of what you would naturally spend in Nigeria running generator, inhaling generator fumes and cutting your lives short. Private school education in Nigeria is super expensive. Yet you are getting the same free in Canada.

b) You complain about loneliness. Don't you have a life? Or can't you create a life for yourself? These are the same people who run from every Nigerian they encounter because they are suspicious of them. Everyone is out to get them as far as they are concerned. Yet they complain about loneliness.

c) The country is cold. Oh really? But Nigeria is not hot? The heat in Lagos alone can fry akara. We are not even talking about Kano yet. If Alberta is cold for you, go to BC. You have options. At least when you were in Nigeria, you couldn't just leave Lagos and go to Aba. Now, you have options. Instead you hear them complain every single time.

d) Can't build wealth. Were you even trying to build wealth in Nigeria? Were you just not trying to survive and praying that a reckless container does not collapse on your car while you were driving? But now, it's suddenly time to build wealth?

I have figured Nigerians complain too much when they can't have their way. At other times, I think it's just the novelty of Canada wearing off or their expectations not getting fulfiled as they live in a society very different from whence they came.

But how do I expect a toxic bully like you to understand? My bad! You are really insufferable and your friends must be going through a lot by just knowing you.
