PoliticsRe: El-Rufai Sparks Reactions With New Photo Days After Withdrawing Ministerial by cucumbar: 10:32am On Aug 16, 2023
amoreobansu:
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has sparked reactions with a new photo confirming his current location.

This comes barely a week after the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain reportedly withdrew his ministerial appointment, named a placement and travelled out of the country.

Recall that El-Rufai’s ministerial confirmation was suspended following a security report by the Department of State Security (DSS) and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.

Naija News reports that the former Governor took to his social media page to share a new photo and revealed his location.

However, former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, took to his Twitter page to share the photo, and it generated mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Foreign AffairsRe: Why Argentina Devalued Its Currency, Jacked Up Interest Rates To 118% by cucumbar: 9:06am On Aug 15, 2023
grandstar:
The issue has never been about those abusing the subsidy. The issue is the subsidy itself.

As at May 28 this year, a litre of crude oil used to process it into petrol cost 47cents per litre. Multiply that the unrealistic exchange rate at the time of 440 to a dollar and that brings the price to N208 per litre of crude oil. The petrol price then was 195 per litre

That means it was cheaper to buy petrol in Nigeria than the crude oil it is made from. It was even the unrealistic rate of 440 used. If the more realistic 770 rate is used, the figure will be more frightening. We are yet to add refining cost and all minor costs? The subsidy would have been at least 250 per litre. Multiply that by 50m litres a day (this is very conservative) and you have 12.5bn daily. Multiply that by 365 and you have around 4.65bn in a year. The government estimated that the fuel subsidy would cost about $10bn this year alone. This is about 2.2% of GDP.

Already, debt servicing was to consume 96% of government revenue this year. Where then is the more to subsidize petrol? The money no longer exists. The government is not borrowing for an investment that would yield interest to pay off the loan but something that would only add on to the country's unsustainable debt burden.

Is the subsidy removal biting my butt? Yes. I have only bought petrol once since the subsidy was removed. Do I support the removal? Yes. It was the right thing to do.

Even if the sub
sidy would cost the government nothing, it caused a lot of damage. It discouraged investment in the refining of crude oil. No one would build a refinery in a country where the government subsidizes the price of main products. Subsidy basically means selling it below the market price. Dangote and Bua could proceed because they could use their very profitable cement businesses as collateral.

Had the subsidy been done away with in the 1990s, by now, the country would be refining at least 2million barrels of crude oil daily. It would have a ripple effect on the oil industry and the economy. Nigeria would definitely be the no.1 petrochemical giant in Africa, same with fertilizer, second largest gas exporter in Africa, Africa's largest oil logistic hub and so on. The subsidy cost the country a lot of things. I won't be surprised if GDP would not be at least 3 times what it is today.
pally, it’s about the abuse…not the subsidy itself.
First of all, they haven’t told us how much fuel we consume or they have been subsidizing. That means certain persons have been inflating the figures at will.

Why have they been calling subsidy a scam?

They talk about smugglers taking subsidized fuel to sell outside Nigeria. Are these smugglers ghosts?

Why must you throwaway the baby with the bath water? Why not go after persons abusing the subsidy ?
Please be truthful for once.

Argentina is a perennial basket case. It should be an economic powerhouse but bad fiscal and monetary policies are the bane of its economy.

It always spends above its revenue and lacks the backbone to cut spending. Cutting spending would mean slashing the bloated civil service, eliminating transportation and energy subsidies. These are untouchables, so things just go from bad to worse.

On January 1 1992, the Argentine Peso was fixed at $1-1peso. Today, it is $1-350 peso

Those who want the petrol subsidy to continue want the above to play out, This should be a warning.

Alagba, they are not even talking about subsidy here in the report. What the report is about is forex. Did you read it at all?

You are still talking about subsidy that has been removed? They have removed it for you as you have advocated.

Your 10-20 years projected suffering is foolish. You don't even have any idea what suffering entails. You don't even know what destabilization that would occur before next year or two and you are making foolish 10 - 20 year projections.

Try and reason like a human being who has higher capacity than lower animals. What exactly are the projections based on? Nothing but wishful thinking.

Have you factored in sudden international or even national occurrences that might happen along the line? War in the Balkan; Tension or possible war between US and China? NATO-Russo war? Massive global economic and financial turmoil? Another pandemic?

Did you know if there would be coup in Niger by this time last year, for instance? Have you considered that Nigeria might be spending so much money out of the socalled subsidy savings in prosecuting a needless war in the coming months?
Don’t mind that Mumu. Anywhere he hears or sees the word subsidy he just jumps in and starts talking rubbish.

I asked myself sincerely, if obi had won and become president, would I because of that wish my country bad and hoping it fails? Of course no. There are times when you should know when to draw the line. Politics is one thing, hating your country is another.

Many Nigerians who celebrate foreign media insulting their president demonstrate a shameless lack of understanding of neocolonialism. This is why they shamelessly jump at any train criticizing their president.

Some of them want him to fail to prove the point that if their candidate had won, he'd have done better.

Folks, irrespective of who you voted for, Bola Tinubu GCFR is our president and the face of our nation. If you refuse to read racism, imperialism and an attempt to undermine your country as the drive for these insults, then you demonstrate severe myopic vision.

Here we were when one of our best exports decided to run down our country to Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak. Even if they succeeded in disrespecting our president and our institutions, how will they respect our country?

For a moment, forget about Bola Tinubu or who you voted for. Why are these foreign imperialists interested in undermining Nigeria?

Sometimes, let us unite and defend our country. We can insult Bola Tinubu or Atiku Abubakar or Peter Obi, but as soon as a foreign element tries it, let us unite and run them out of town. That is how we create respect for ourselves.
You are just here talking rubbish. Why have you lots decided not to have sense? Where is the lie in what they are saying?
You can’t have someone with a questionable character at the helm of affairs of a nation and expect no repercussions.

Weather you like it or not, you can’t have the respect you so crave for when someone with serious flaws is your president.

When I left university I was very lucky to get a job that sponsored me to Europe on a platter of gold. I went to Europe for the first time in my life without even visiting the embassy in Nigeria. My visa was done while I was there. I left the job and came back to Nigeria to do business. Omho the kind suffering wey choke me eh, in a years time I was super broke. Covid came and I managed to pick up a new skill and God so faithful I was able to get something going with it. I planned my japa immediately I got my job in 2020.

If you have no experience in business, just avoid it. Business is extremely difficult and in Nigeria it's ten times more difficult. Everyone is out to cheat you. Customers, your fellow colleagues, your suppliers. The list is endless and there's zero rule of law. You can be scammed and theres no police to go to. The thing with business in Nigeria is that if it fails, Nigeria has no safety net. You can fall into severe poverty and never ever return. Thankfully I have very wonderful parents and a strong support base at home but not everyone has this. Abroad if your business or startup fails, you can always live on government benefits and then find a new job and gradually rebuild yourself. In Nigeria it's not even easy to get back into paid employment if you didn't succeed doing business and even if you did, it's very difficult to get any sort of job In Nigeria
How did you travel to Europe without a visa ? Abeg me I’m interested.

You are the tribal person here! You see things in a tribal light and perceive everyone else will.

So, Nigerians were not tribal when they voted for Jonathan? He won all states of the Southwest except Osun state (Aregbesola was still very popular then) and they did not vote for the ACN candidate Ribadu. You start shouting tribalism when it suits you

Did OBJ not try severally just to increase the price and met great opposition? Is OBJ Ijaw? Was he from a minority tribe like the Chibok? Most Yorubas applauded Oshiomole's frustrations of OBJ's oil price increases.

Jonathan failed to carry the nation along that he would remove the subsidy and deregulate the price. The nation just woke up on January 1st, 2012, with the announcement that the subsidy was gone and price fully deregulated.

Who does that? Where's the wisdom? He should have started sensitizing with stakeholders that he would remove the price after he won the 2011 elections. Heavy consultations with the state governors and stakeholders should have been had on how to end it. Oshiomole who was now a governor realizing his mistake could have reached an agreement with the NLC. I fully supported the deregulation then and now.

OBJ did a very poor job of enlightening the population of the need to end the subsidy and fully deregulate the price. That military man in him preferred to impose things on the citizenry rather than work through consultation. The same Oshiomole who fought him hard upon becoming governor realized that the subsidy was costing the nation dearly and short-changing all 3 tiers of government.

This is 2023. Times are different. It is glaring that the petrol subsidy is adversely affecting the country. Buhari's wasted 8 years has exposed the unaffordability of the subsidy, costing about a quarter to a third of the budget to finance.

Also, Tinubu, Obi and Atiku all stated they would remove it. So, what's the problem here? Is it because it was a Yoruba man that eventually removed it? If it needed to be removed, it should irrespective of who actually did so.
this one think say he done make sense. Mumu.
