FamilyRe: false reasons why some people believe feminists hate men by damiso(f):
bukatyne: @Damiso,

Hi

I believe all that was possible because consciously or unconsciously, they all believed men and women are equal and acted as such

Infact, it was when I got to the university that I really saw women treated as beneath men etc. In my secondary school, boys & girls served the same punishment, washed plates together, darkened the board together, received the same beatings, etc.

It is more of a mind thing. Treating kids equally will do the trick
Hi bukatyne

I agree that treating kids equally helps because as I said it was not until later university I think that I perceived this women are oppressed thing.

I actually dont think all African women suddenly embracing feminism is the solution to the problem as the movement (whether we call them fringe or not ) have had the radical ones being a the more vocal parties especially in the west.Even Alice walker coined another term "womanism" just to distance themselves from the rhetoric of the more radical elements. They just whine and moan about silly things now like I have the right to be naked or why is beyonce calling herself Mrs Carter cos she sang independent women ages ago cheesy

I know its not a popular opinion but women themselves in a way have actually perpuatated this subjugation by being their own worst enemies.Alot of Naija women (not all) really really do not mind the patriarchal construct.I have had so many women say they prefer a male lecturer or boss to a female one even when its obvious that the male one might not necessarily be the better more qualified candidate.I had a female boss that alot of people hated.Gosh people hated v soo much "see her carry work ontop head' " dont go and marry' " no wonder she is not married' and most of these were by women.I wont lie I thought she was overly harsh when I worked with her from afar but when i was seconded to head office and worked more closely with her I just realised she was a stickler for excellent work ethic no time for excuses. But those girls prefered the male managers who they would just be laughing with, taking extended lunches while they flicked their weaves and laughed sheepishly because they knew those feminine wiles wont work on V.

Some naija women actually like the idea of them using their feminity to get what they want so I think we are on a long thing if we think embracing feminism will solve the problem.Take a typical naija gal out (me included back in the day grin) and ask her to go dutch shocked na automatic loser dat guy go be.Its a gradual process but believe me I don't think feminism can change the status quo when the percieved opressed like using bottom power wink

Really of my set that graduated like 80% of the girls got jobs before the guys.No jokes and this is first hand experience. Some of the girls deserved to get jobs by merit but another number were aristo chics who got plush jobs through their highly placed sugar daddies.

coogar: i am now born-again, no more trouble!

wait until they face a big south american team. the humidity & the dew point are a big disadvantage to the european teams. they get worn-out easily.

i didn't feel anything for neymar - his team mates made the game physical. they nearly killed the james rodriguez (the player of the tournament in my opinion) with their physical football. they bullied him off the park & the ref gave no protection to the creative players.
My hubby's sentiments. He kept saying is this rugby or football? grin grin I agree that the ref killed the game and Brazils patter on play was just confusing.Based on Argentina performance today I think I prefer them but like pickabeau said my heart just feels Brazil will win you know to make it cliché Brazil wins the world cup in Brazil like rio ferdinard hashtag on twitter #rioinrio grin grin grin trust people they haf yabbed his life out grin grin
FamilyRe: Boys Night Out Discussions by damiso(f): 7:35pm On Jul 05, 2014
coogar: tell hubby a south american country would win it. the environmental factor suits them more than the european teams. there's a reason no european team have won it on their continent. it's tailor-made for them. germany would get destroyed by brazil easily.......
Cooooogarrr we missed your trouble making welcome back grin grin

I agree with you I think a south american country will win it.But he thinks Germany (and maybe Holland with brother Oscar nominee arjen robben grin) have shown some great spirit because at the end of the day he thinks the world cup is worn by that team that is able to dig in deep and go all the way.

Yesterday God forgive me embarassed I thought Neymar was exaggerating the pain. The boy(in short the whole brazilian team and their river niger tears) just like melodrama.Feel so sorry for him.Must be such a horrible feeling having to miss the last (or maybe 2) games of such a wonderful and iconic world cup.

Who do you think owns this World Cup?

Hubby thinks Germany I think Brazil( he thinks Brazil is crap and they have lost neymar) but I just think they will fumble and wobble to to the final. But this Argentina team that is playing now is giving me second thoughts.
FamilyRe: false reasons why some people believe feminists hate men by damiso(f): 12:18pm On Jul 05, 2014
Abeg make una go open another thread for una eyecandy tongue Mr pickabeau and co were you not supposed to be watching the beautiful game tongue

Hi lorretta I just thought to comment to add my two cents.I read the article and even if did not read I think I have shared on these boards that I studied Femininsm from the academic view point(my final year degree project was on feminism in Islam) and I wrote and researched my project myself(too stingy to pay 50k to get someone to write it for me lol grin) so i studied it and know the reasons for the advent of the movement. So yeah your article makes valid points but I just want to digress a bit.

I think I read somewhere you said one of the things that made you embrace the feminist ideology was that you were denied a position you were more qualified for simply because you were a girl. That is not on but I will share my own experiences which is similar to that of a lot of girls I know and as such why I don't think not nececesarily wanting to be called a feminist in any way means you believe women should be shackled.

I grew up around very very strong women in positions of authority. My paternal grandmother was not western educated Infact she sold pepper in her local market(you know those big time pepper traders that had to go the north) and gradually became the iyaloja(I think its called head of market in English) of her neck of the woods and male local government chairmen had to defer to her.My mum is from ijebu and I am not lying when I say ALOT of the women from her side of the family are extremely strong women(there is even an unfair stereotype that ijebu women jazz their husbands grin) women who were never treated inferior both at home and in the workplace. My mum rose to management level of a govt parastatal and at the time of her leaving the MD was female, they had female executive directors and a lot of women around me were just doing as well as the men.My primary school proprietress was female and was in a position of authority over the headmaster who was male.My secondary school principal was female with a male vice so I had examples of females in authority around me and as such was not even an issue of women always being beneath men.

As I have shared on here I was also lucky to have a father who helped myself and my sister believe in ourselves,My brother is the only boy and he was never treated like he was better than us, my mum would send him to go grind pepper and my dad would tell me to go put on the generator so it was never a gender issue in our household but who was available at the time.My brother used to grumble though that none of his friends were sent to grind pepper when there girls or house help in the house(was apparently picking it up in their houses grin) but that was his business cos my parents never listened grin. My grandmother was the first child of her father and had equal inheritance as her brothers. My mum even though from a polygamous background had as much say in what happened as her brothers and in short decisions were not made without her input. My grandmother resisted being married off to my grandfathers brother after his death and nobody did anything to her.

I was head of literary and debating society in primary /secondary school,my deputy was a boy.I was also part of the quiz team and sometimes led us to quiz competitions. We had head boy and head girl and they were both as influential as the other(went to mixed secondary school).Male and female prefects were the same.I led teams (as long as I was the more capable person) and so maybe I was lucky and shielded a bit from that patriarchal construct of males being ahead of females growing up but it truly was never an issue for me. I was just taught to be the best I could be,run my own race, not let anybody try to bruise my self esteem, believe in myself and not feel entitled.I believe those ideals are what is best we teach our children(both genders)and not try to teach the girl child that you might to have always fight for respect and the boy child you are inherently better.I have one of each gender and I hope We are able to impart those values into them.

Bigsteveg: What a wonderful story, u see..money is not everything, dat is y in africa (nigeria especially) the kids are more closer to the mother who spends much time with them even with the fact dat the dad might be the one paying their school fees @ harvard. Parenting isn't easy. May the lord help us all not to fail in dat aspect.
A
Amen. Its a big task being a parent.May He help us to balance it out effectively because we all want to give them the best which costs money and making money is not easy.We also don't want to chase the money and forget to create the memories as my fondest memories of my dad is the time spent with him, talks I had with him and not just that he paid my school fees
FamilyRe: Successful Career Women Can't Have It All - Pepsi CEO, Indra Nooyi by damiso(f): 5:12pm On Jul 03, 2014
Seun: She's right. No pain, no gain. Even men can't have it all: most of my male role-models were abysmal fathers; they had no time for their children.
That's why its not necessarily gender specific.Mandela's children might not think he was a hands on dad but he had had to sacrifice family life for a cause greater than him being a father.

That said though I kinda think its selfish to keep having kids when you know for a fact that neither yourself, your spouse or no great support network will be at least there for the childrem from time to time. Not necessarily all the time (missing school plays will not kill a child esp african children grin) but to a certain level children need to feel they matter and are worth their parents time.
FamilyRe: Successful Career Women Can't Have It All - Pepsi CEO, Indra Nooyi by damiso(f): 10:35pm On Jul 02, 2014
When it comes heading big business it is not even a gender specific thing. You just have to sometimes sacrifice that recital, that parent teacher meeting, that school play and one way or the other let down your children. That is not necessarily black and white good or bad because every good thing or anything of value tends to come with sacrifices..

Its easier when you have a great support network like she did in her mum (and my mum had her in her own mum before she passed on as my dad was also on the move alot) but she does have a point that it's sometimes hard to manage a work life balance when you get to the peak of certain proffessions. Its the same for men too but it just tends to be women who feel a bit more guilty about it.

I know a family where the kids have travelled to most of the countries in the world with their mum on vacation but were sooo thrilled when their Dad was finally able to join them on a family holiday to Gambia. But the truth is Daddy has to sacrifice that time with them to pay for a very expensive education and lifestyle.
