Aile: The headquarters shouldn't have been relocated to Abuja in the first place. Lagos is the economic center of the nation
Quite correct. The mere fact that Abuja is the capital does not mean that every single HQ has to be there whether it makes sense or not. That's how they even carried the HQs of NPA and NIMASA there at a point. I have no doubt that if there is a Department of Oceanography in this country the HQ will be in Abuja. How nonsensical is that.
The Banks are all powered from Lagos and thus there is nothing wrong with the whole of the CBN HQ being domiciled in Lagos.
We do things for strange political reasons in this country. Thats how we went and built a refinery in Kaduna. Who does that when you will first have to transport crude there by land with all the attendant costs.
Nato008: Common how can u use bin laden as a case study when u know the were going to seve him justice hot
Aside from the fact that -
1. They didnt go to arrest him (not that they had a right to do so on foreign soil) - they went to kill him
2. If not for the power of the USA in the world, that was a breach of sovereignty and a breach of international law, and in fact murder on foreign soil.
3. Its just a bad example generally. That was a case that had risen to the level of warfare for all practical purposes, and thats why no one will look at the fine points of legality or illegality.
Bluntemperor: You may be right, bro! The man in the Studio is yet to tell us , even his name, what he does for a living, his address because the Police says ' he has been dodging arrest! So, those defending him, should tell us more!
Surely, you are smoking something. A person who is a guest on a live radio show is unidentified? Are you having a laugh?
DREAMHOMES6970: If you actually listened well you would hear the guy telling them the right thing for the police to do is to invite him to their office if they had anything against him. And what criminal runs to a radio station to hide?
pcagbaji: For obvious reason the police may not tell you the reason for your arrest immediately maybe escape is feared or to prevent putting the life of the suspect in danger definitely they will tell him he's offense when he get to the station is like that
This is nothing but standard Naija BS. And its against the law.
Fiscus105: Were you at the scene for u not to know that police didn't tell him his offence?
You think police would enter a corporate organization and arrested suspect in studio without informing the suspect, infact they would informed TV station authority that present.
Oga stop relying on half information on social to judge
One can make a fair assessment because the man shouted repeatedly asking for his offense. They did not answer. They had many opportunities to do so but only responded with - "there is a petition against you" and "you are a criminal" (which is perfect nonsense).
You are talking as if you dont know the way Nigerian Police men operate.
Fiscus105: Have you tried to ask urself, the kind offence the guy committed?
Anybody can be arrested in anywhere, the respect police would grant u, for them not to arrest u in certain places, would base on level of offences u committed.
Meanwhile, as for Rufai, he has never committed offence that warrant him to be arrested. The offence he normally committed is to fine the TV station and which they are doing periodically.
@ The bold: I am tired of repeating that it was the duty of the police men to state that offense. That is the law, and that is also the right of the citizen.
verybadmouth: Then he should stand up from his seat to meet them. Is that difficult or I don't understand
Ol boy stop saying all these things. The space between those people was less than one metre. I didnt see anything stopping them from walking up to him. Its simply the camera they were afraid of.
verybadmouth: That's not a newsroom, it's a studio. And who told you a newsroom is immuned from police invasion?
There is little difference between a TV and Radio Studio. Secondly, the argument is not that the studio is immune no. The point is that there is a process for an arrest.
And yes, all that drama was lousy, needless and unprofessional. Based on a "petition." Lol.
verybadmouth: Then he should go close to them instead of running back. He's acting like a criminal. They will tell him why they arrested him when he gets to them.
If this in the below video was hiding, how will he had known his offense
Go close and stop hiding? Are you for real? Where did you see that man hiding? The man who kept shouting to know his offense was hiding? You just have local police mentality. You need to school up even for your own sake, because anyone - including you - could be the subject of police harassment tomorrow.
I dont know if you watched the full video because he showed his face well.
alizma: When a petition is written against you and submitted to the police, you have the duty to answer some questions at the police station where the details will be read to you and you explain your own part, the detail is not always read to you at the point of invitation or arrest, you heard the police man saying you think you can continue to hide or so. To educate you more, not all criminals have their charges read to their hearing before they are taking away, even in the USA, UK etc
I am sorry sir. I am a lawyer of twenty years standing. I can tell you you are most wrong. If there is a petition they wish you to respond to, a polite invitation is sufficient. At any point of a proper arrest, there is a legal duty to inform you of the offense you are being arrested for. No one is arrested for an offense he is not informed of. No one. This is capitally wrong.
Please dont even go as far as mentioning the US and UK if you dont know what you are saying.
And please try for once to stand on the side of basic rights. We have this "by order" and "command" mentality here which is still backward. It could be you tomorrow.
verybadmouth: Baba let them kill your loved one and wait for him to finish a radio program before they arrest him. You will know how far. Una too like crime for this Naija sef, that's why you support and celebrate criminals.
This is highly nonsensical. The officers have failed to mention the offense - which they are required to by law and you have jumped to murder and also the conclusion that we are celebrating a criminal.
verybadmouth: Even if the guy is in a plane, in the bathroom, eating, banging his wife, in the office, farm, driving, the police officers have every single right to arrest him. He doesn't look like a top government official that has immunity, Soo why is he evading arrest and making stupid videos. He should follow them and answer any question he is asked.
But wait oo, una Nigerians funny ooo. What has the police officers done wrong for you to be insulting them in this manner? You don't even know what the guy has done wrong yet and you're blaming the officers. Imagine the guy was involved in the kidnap of your sister, will you be saying all these rubbish. Nigerians make una start to dey get sense oo. If you see how and where oyinbo dey arrest people ehhh, una go call Naija police holy.
Here again. Look at the bold. That is exactly what the officers have done wrong - not stating the offence. Stating the offence is the number one rule and the first thing to be done in any arrest. That is a matter of law and also fundamental right.
SmartyPants: Yeah but that's not the subject of discussion, is it?
Well thats my own angle sha. As a lawyer, thats what concerns me. But as we have both agreed, it was also unprofessional. The drama was needless.
Nigerian Police will often arrest someone for a mere misdemeanor or even civil matter with the aggression that one would use for a terrorist strapped with a bomb.
verybadmouth: Nawa ooo. Finish, that's how they'll wait for the criminal that will kill your family member to finish before they arrest him
With statements like this, many of you just show that you are still not ripe to dwell in a constitutional democracy and you still dont deserve fundamental human rights.
SmartyPants: The question is what is illegal about arresting someone while he or she is on air? Maybe it is not nice - maybe unprofessional, but I saw someone say it is illegal and I wondered. How?
Per the law - that strictly is not illegal in itself. But what would be illegal is not informing him of his specific offence (and that is not simply saying "there is a petition against you" ) and not reading him his rights.
alizma: So they should have come with the petition and read it for him. Disclosing to him that a petition has been written against him is enough disclosure already.
My dear it is absolutely not enough. Anyone can write anything meaningless against anyone else as happens in this country all the time. The proper thing, not just under local laws, but also under global standard practice, is to state the offence, and read him his rights. E.g: You have the right to remain silent, etc.
If what you are advocating flies, you should simply go and live in a totalitarian state, not a constitutional democracy.
verybadmouth: Finish wetin? Security agencies don't act like that ooo. Are you playing? So they should be waiting for a criminal to finish his thing because of what. Don't worry, when armed robber kills one of your loved one, on the day of his arrest, police will wait for him to finish whatever he is doing until he finds an escape route or disguises. Rubbish
The first step in an arrest is to state the offence the person is being arrested for. E.g: "You are under arrest for armed robbery"
alizma: The illiterate here is you. Have you asked to know his offense, is it illegal to arrest someone at a radio station. This is why many of you keep getting killed in foreign land when you carry your madness there. A team of law enforcement agency came to arrest him, he asked for the ID card which was shown to him yet he had the gots to say on live show that he was not going anywhere and you guys are clapping for him. Is this how the country will get better?
How can you write the bold and still fail to note that that is the very first thing the officers ought to have stated? Rather they were saying - "there is a petition against you" and "you are a criminal". . . . . what nonsense is that?
You went further to link it to the possibility of arresting Oseni - is Oseni a wanted person or a suspect due for arrest? Why can't you situate events in their proper context?
If you listen, the policeman simply kept saying someone had written a petition against him. Is that sufficient for this unnecessary drama?
Please note something: THE FIRST THING in arresting ANYONE ANYWHERE is to INFORM him of the REASON for his arrest - e.g: "You are hereby under arrest for the offense of murder of Mr. X."
Rather what did you see here - "You are a criminal." What is that?
The next thing is to read him his rights.
Besides there is a general place for civility and ethics in executing such things. I doubt that man was about to announce a coup on air please.
madridguy: Sai Baba & Jagaban, strong men doing wonders. I sincerely wish to stand between them both for a photograph and hang it somewhere in my family compound.
You want a photo op with Beelzebub and Ashtoreth? Who are you, the antichrist?
Why would you want to hang as the rotten testicles between two legs, one of which is an ifrit and the other a vile jinn?
tremilatre: Again my friend, you have to read between the lines which was my opening phrase in the quoted text. US all but left NATO in Trump's first tenure, he was even quoted as saying to NATO leaders, "US will not come to your aide". Have you listened to John Bolton when he discussed the mad decisions Trump made including pulling the carpet under NATO? Do you also know about the "Trump-proof" NATO bill passed in Congress Oct 2023 which makes it near impossible for any president to unilaterally withdraw from NATO? Global politics is just an iceberg, what we see on the surface is just a fraction of reality.
tremilatre: Read between the lines people, the German Ministry of Defence leaked this to the media, guess why? They want more funding. In Trump's first tenure, he kept pushing for NATO to increase defence spending up to the 2% GDP as per NATO agreement. They didn't. He took the US out of NATO. With his landslide win in IOWA, he is a shoehorn for the Rep ticket, if he wins and takes US out of NATO again, guess what? The prospect of Russ vs NATO wouldn't be a mismatch anymore.
Trump took the US out of NATO right? What school did you go to please?
