kandiikane: There isn't anything wrong with this, if that's how you choose to bring up your child but why do you have to teach her how to keep a husband?

At a tender age, you are manipulating her mind. To keep a husband that's not even there and not sure whether that husband will be there.

This is the reason why many women feel suicidal when they approach their late 20s and 30s without a husband. Parents have been teaching them, it's a must to have husband and especially at so, so and so age. You are putting pressure on a child from a very early age. If you are going to teach a small child how to keep her husband, teach her how to keep herself first if the husband doesn't come.
I agree with you. I heard of a lady who's been taught from childhood how to keep her man. At marriage, her husband wouldnt eat her food because he preferred eating out. She went into depression. I doubt she thought there was more to her beyond the marriage

Kobojunkie: use your left hand in the loo? Who does that? I don't. I am not left handed so why would I use my left hand in the loo?
that makes you appear dirty to a Nigerian who does. Mind you, I wasnt justifying any of these things. Only showing the fallacy in your posts that the things we term Nigerian arent peculiar to it.

So, bending over to greet is Nigerian Value? Let's go with that for a second here. How does bending over contribute to morality our community? Does it mean those who don't generate backache from that exercise by the time they are in their 40's are good people? grin grin grin grin
that should make a different discourse. It doesnt at all fall into my reason for stating it.

Kobojunkie: Yes, I know. With some of you, you believe a child is at fault for being born left-handed. . . grin

Look, when you say there are Nigerian ideals . .. at least be able to point them out and differentiate them from all those we know of that are out there.
oh, you never knew it existed and I am telling it to you. Must be that you'r finding it hard to accept that some ideals are very peculiar to Nigeria.

No need feeling ashamed of learning a new thing. It only shows you'r better than you were yesterday

maclatunji: LWKMD!

Eeeeerrrrmmm. My dear sisters, my last set of posts are not meant in any manner to demean, belittle or humiliate you. They are just a comic expression of some of the random thoughts of a young man who has not met(?) his future wife. If it will make you feel any better, you too can share your random thoughts on how you think you will find/ be found by your "ideal man" as husband.

I had to type that before I am subjected to the hurricane of feminism
and yh! I wasnt done. I just find it hard to fathom that you keep embarrassing yourself all over the forum and it doesn't help that your being a mod here makes pple add the tag Islam to your posts. So my outburst is a need that I had to fulfill. At some point I thought, if every1 kept telling you the same thing, maybe u'd change and since you havent I might just help rub it in a little more.

So, Why would you say something you thought could be seen as demeaning, belittling and humiliating with the thought that you could get away with it when you put your ridiculous grins and make everyone have a thought that 'it was a joke'?

and then it actually was a thought in your very simple mind. I cant possibly find such thoughts wrong. They probably are a result of the day to day happenings around you. Cant be too far from what obtains in your 'area' but it becomes wrong when you bring it into a public forum. Many of the people I know who are here and the ones I have known from here are self respecting, career driven, intelligent Muslim women and your 'under the roof' mentality just doesnt apply to them.

So when next you want to talk your mind, think again for I would be here to address you. have it in mind that I am being polite NOW.

and again, like How much were you talking about??

any shy man doesnt deserve d lady grin I cant stand shy men. on a personal level sha o.

cola: Hi deols,

The intention is key. Even a couple of hours in the masjid with no going about, with the intention to devote those hours in worship to Allah would be good. The key things are: 1. You must be in the masjid; Allah ta'ala sayssad Laa tubaashiru unna wa antum 'aakifuna fili masaajid. 2. You must have in the intention to devote those hours to Allah.

W'Allahu a'alam.
Why is this wrong?

I know it is a big deal in Nigeria but never really understood what exactly is wrong with the left hand. If you don't mind. . .please explain why this is bad, it can't be "Human Being Value"
I didn't say it is bad. Just making it clear that all of these things cannot be generalised as human values. You never can tell what happens elsewhere.

It may be bad only because it is seen as bad or because you eat with your right and is expected to use your left at the loo.

ANother Nigerian value is at least bending to greet your elders. I dont think that can be generalised as human either

coogar: but has this strict discipline worked in nigeria?
our country still ships the highest number of prostitutes to europe. the male youths are 419/yahoo-boys/armed robbers.
premarital sex is rife in the country - even worse than any of the developed countries you can mention.
so it begs the question - what is the essence of the naija value when it has not produced any positive impact amongst the youths?
I disagree that it hasnt produced any positive impact. The impact are just not as they used to be. could it be that people got caught up in other aspects of life that they totally forgot about these ideals or they at some point just got lost, losing some sense of identity and just living while 'anything goes'.

It happens in certain societies that concerned citizens sit down and have a review of their values and then look out for ways of instilling them. The media could make a powerful tool. An end to poverty might also make a difference since poverty has been identified as a factor.

parental control might go a long way. If people would marry earlier too grin

to get the answer to this question, you need to consider the fail(s) in parenting. How many parents still instil these values. How many of those who instil them fail. I have heard of a girl whose mother gave a female condom immediately after her SSCE. the mother told her she could do anything but must not get pregnant. I know of another girl whose father is keeping from relationships at her first year in the University.

Fact is, the discipline is not as it used to be and that is responsible for the decline in our values.

It must have started from the need 'to belong', to appear as knowing how things are in the world, or to feel westernised, erroneously or otherwise.

btw at Kobojunkie, that they are western ideals doesnt make them less NIgerian. I have seen a place where giving things to elders with your left hand is no big deal. Would you still call that a 'human being value?'

what I see as wrong is this condescending attitude. This letter is wrong in all ramifications.

You wouldn't attend church services or you would when they suit you?

I just don't like it when Religion is the excuse people give for their actions.

It would be more appropriate to hear of his fear of such a gathering or of his busy schedule or that attending funerals isn't part of his job.
Family › Re: by deols(f): 9:12pm On Aug 14, 2012
That many people fail to keep to our values doesnt mean we dont have them. Somewhere deep in every1 or majority of the people, they exist.

Nigerian values include that you respect your elders, that you dont eye them nor look down on them, stamp your feet while speaking with them, not to raise your voice over theirs.that you respect your parents, hold their views in high esteem and seek to please them always. It also involves being chaste(pregnancy before marriage was at least a thing of shame until very recently and is still it in some places). Neatness and cleanliness as being next to Godliness. To also hold things termed holy in high esteem, keeping to the rules and regulations guiding them.

A lot may have been responsible for the decline in our value system. It doesnt make them non existent nor less valuable.
Wanting a different city for women shows how despicable the men in that country are. It is a desperate subliminal plea for freedom. You mean after all the inhumane laws, (beheading, flogging, amputating) women are still not safe? You mean with the black head to toe masquerade attires, they still get harassed. by who?

Will they be wearing mini skirts and bikinis in this new city since its all women? And these laws are suppose to help muslims/Saudis make heaven? Isn't that what 'religious' law are meant to do. not to control and dictate to people.
Stop playing Holy, islamic laws don't and will never make any society better. the vices experienced in Las vegas are also experienced in Jeddah. You might get a second chance in vegas but we all know the story with Saudi.
sorry. I do not have your time.

Well, I wouldn't be a true follower of the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) by pretending all is well with Muslim Nations as regards the rights of women. Thank God though that there is a distinction between Islam and Arab. Even Muslims and Islam. Only the people who have decided to be ignorant and are satisfied with swimming in the pool of their self deceit would claim otherwise.

Islam gives women several rights
. The right to life, to own property, to marry the man of their choice, to seek divorce, to be treated as individuals, etc. But these rights are denied them in many places, including the Muslim world. the good thing would be to condemn the people, government or acclaimed shaikhs denying them these rather than Islam.

The said industrial town is a good move towards women empowerment. When you are empowered with education, with a career, etc, asking for your rights become easy. I hope those rights would be sought with the principles of Islam in mind.

Injustice to women is haram and every man, woman, Muslim or otherwise should seek to end it.

Trust me, for extremist nations, change can only come gradually. Evn the women av bn led to bliv dat they av no rights. If u giv dem absolute frrdom now, a good number of dem wil not grab it. drzed: So what do you now classify as an Islamic name? Just because her name sounds Farsi-ish (Iranian) or Pashtoonish (Afghanistan) - that makes it 'unislamic' in your view?

The first criteria of a Muslim name is that it has a beautiful, sensible meaning.

An Arab name is NOT directly proportional to being a Muslim name. For example, Tariq Aziz (Saddam's right hand man) was a Christian. The name 'Tariq' and 'Aziz' are not exclusive rights of Muslims, unless for example, the prefix 'Abdul' is used with 'Aziz' to make Abdul-Aziz. Similarly Boutrous Ghali was a coptic Egyptian Christian, sharing his surname with Muslims like our (infamous) Ghali Na Abba.

This is not to say that there arent names which are exclusively Muslim within the Arab language. It just happens that majority of Arabs are Muslims. Similarly ...(hang on to your hat now) ...not every thing written in Arabic script is Islamic in content. (surprise, surprise!!!! eh?). Even though again, Arabic is the 'official' language of Islam.

It is amazing the amount of ignorance about Islam, Arabs and Arabic exists out there. But only because people elect to assume, when they could inquire or KNOW for sure. Stereotyping 101. I guess some people may have a heart attack if I inform them that there ARE Christian bibles written in the Arabic language and an Arabic bible has existed since the early days of Christianity. Google it.

By the way, it is only in places like Nigeria that Muslims usually seem to ALWAYS have an 'Arab' name. In other parts of the world, Muslims keep their traditional/tribal names. There is no law or requirement that a Muslim's name should be 'Arabic', even though there are some beautiful attributes and examples of recommended names found in the Arabic language.

You are welcome.
thank u so much. You are so so right.

there's a big difference between arabic and islamic.
