Travel › Re: Why Don't Africans Spend Their Holidays More In Africa by DisGuy(mod): 12:28am On Feb 17, 2010
This is a very interesting one!

The very first question should be why don't Africans go on holiday- they go mainly for shopping, and family visit in other countries.

Another thing is tourism is not developed in most African countries, quick access to information is very important; you can book a European holiday from your room- flight, insurance, hotel even Cabs and other things online, whilst in some parts of Africa you struggle to get information or even routes to destinations, if you notice on this board many travelling agent offering visas/tickets for European or Asian countries but ask anyone of them the price of hotels in Calabar and tickets you don't get a response.

Some Africans are mistreated even by other africans at airports, e.g Kenya and south Africa, you really don't want to get that hassle

12. The latest assessment shows that while the overall health of the Nigerian banking system could be described as generally satisfactory, the state of some banks is less cheering. Specifically, as at end-March, 2004, the CBN’s ratings of all the banks, classified 62 as sound/satisfactory, 14 as marginal and 11 as unsound, while 2 of the banks did not render any returns during the period. The weaknesses of some of the ailing banks are manifested by their overdrawn positions with the CBN, high incidence of non-performing loans, capital deficiencies, weak management and poor corporate governance. These shortcomings have, in recent years, led to the revocation of the licenses of two banks and the suspension of three others from clearing house activities, prior to the commencement of the new settlement system.
13. A further analysis of the returns of the marginal and unsound banks reveals that they account for 19.2 percent of total assets of the banking system, 17.2 percent of total deposit liabilities while the industry non performing assets account for 19.5 percent. Although these ratios, except that for deposits, were below the trigger points for declaring the system as distressed, they are nevertheless of major supervisory concern.

14. The fundamental problems of the banks, particularly those classified as unsound, have been identified to include: persistent illiquidity, poor assets quality and unprofitable operations.

For clarity, we can summarize the major problems of many Nigerian banks as follows:
a) weak corporate governance, evidenced by high turnover in the Board and management staff, inaccurate reporting and non-compliance with regulatory requirements, falling ethics and de-marketing of other banks in the industry;
b) late or non-publication of annual accounts that obviates the impact of market discipline in ensuring banking soundness;
c) gross insider abuses, resulting in huge non-performing insider related credits;

d) insolvency, as evidenced by negative capital adequacy ratios and shareholders’ funds that had been completely eroded by operating losses;
God bles you Binna!!

And several years later we are still grappling with the same issue only on a bigger scale!!

Onlyy in naija!!
you compare someone that is there for 6months with someone that was there for 4years*
people are here asking what sanusi has achieved since he got there?? like duhhh its only some few months
When soludo got there no one even bothered asking for his achievement within a year na crime make person
come from north? abi na crime make person no go normal western universities?

read some people saying sanusi should have done all this quietly?!?! how do you remove 5-6 CEO quietly in Nigeria
the thing is Nigerians only follow instructions when there is a cane in hand! that's what these corporate agberos understand!!
compare OBJ you must obey government to yaraduas 'rule of law' government- you get things done quicker with one and the other na court you go sleep
everyday! this is what we need now let everything be done now and fast! instead of all this paddy paddy style
i understand where u are coming from. . me like u too am taking a siddon look approach. . .

if it were up to me i would choose chukwuma soludo over sanusi
but its not up to me,at least not now. . .

Soludos achievements cannot be rubbished or washed away no matter what sanusi does

also something that bothers me about sanusi is his recent hint at lowering capital requirements for new banks

and raising it for others

i think the cap requirement should be left at N25billion and if anything should be raised to N150bln ($1bln dollars)
Nigerian banks should have the ability to fund big ticket items like power and infrastructure
I think you should read the news report properly, i know nigerian journalists can be half baked sometimes,
but i read some where about different capital base for different categories instead of having one flat rate for banks
like a mortgage bank should have a different capital base to an investment bank or agricultural bank, they are all doing the same thing at the moment

"The question we are asking ourselves is must every bank compete in the same space, must every bank be an international bank. Can we not have regional banks, can we not have specialised banks," Sanusi told a banking conference in Lagos.

"What we are doing now is categorising banks and we will come out with different capital requirements for the banks."
234next

Bradford and bigley should have a different capital base and focus to say halifax

MrCrackles, watch as it unfolds.
First, Waziri goes.
Second,
the courts would be allowed to judge fairly on the suits brought by the shareholders, CEO's etc against the CBN and vice versa.
Third, the shareholders/CEOs win their cases and CBN has to comply with the court decision. The CEO's however won't be allowed to return 2 the banks, which I think is fair.
Fourth, Sanusi is angry and frustrated because he can't go further with his plans.All his plans are questioned by the new executive.
Fifth,
He is fed up and resigns.
Watch as the next two quarters play themselves out.
Check out the profile of the new AGF and you will get the message.

No Wee:
My people, I want to visit Nigeria in some month’s time and I have applied for the new Nigerian ePassport because my current one has expired. I also paid $65 online for the ePassport and my interview is on 23 February 2010. This means that I will travel from Glasgow to London. As a student, I don’t want to spend money and time to go that far and return without achieving my aim. Therefore, I implore anybody who has recently obtained the ePassport over there to let me know the items I need to bring along with me. At present, I only know that I must come with my expired passport and a £20 processing fee in postal order. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Another issue is that I can't find my way around London. Please which airport is closer to the embassy and what is the best way to get to the embassy from the airport?
Just read the requirements online and bring extra cash and documents just in case and dont bother arguing with them, just tick off as much as possible from the required list, go early

From Gatwick you can get easybus (book online) to central then get a train to Charing Cross
From Heathrow get the piccadilly line to Piccadily Circus then a Bakerloo line to Charing Cross
