Midwest is a collection of various unique groups with the Urhobos being majority. There is no direct answer to your question, but I will make a little contribution just for the sake of those who aren't farmiliar with the region. Midwest is made up of Anioma (Igbo), Bini, Esan, Urhobo/Isoko, Itsekiri and Ijaw. Some of these ethnic groups have alliances to either East or West, while some are neutral. URHOBO/ISOKO: Urhobo being the major group in the region and a major power bloc shares similar culture with Bini, and speak an Edoid Language. Before the amalgamation of Nigeria, the Urhobos had less contact with those across the Niger and it was only during the Palm oil boom did they migrated West-ward, that was in the 1900-1980's. Because of the little or less contact with either region, the Urhobos have always maintained a neutral position. Bini/Esan: Bini is an ancient kingdom that greatly influenced some Eastern subgroups and some parts of western region, because of their ancient glory, they have maintained a neutral ground and have resisted several attempt to lump them with either East or West, as we can see with their battles with Awolowo in the then Western region. Anioma: Being an Igbo speaking people, they have maintained a good relationship with their blood relations across the Niger, during the Civil War, they were the only Midwestern group that showed support to the Eastern region. Ijaw: They have always shown interest in uniting all Ijaw territory, while working with other groups in the region to fight for a common goal, so like the Urhobos and Binis, the Ijaws are neutral. Itsekiri: They are a minority group whose language is more related to Eastern Yoruboid dialects like Ikale, Ilaje and Ijebu, they have good relationship with western Nigeria, during the creation of Midwest, notable Itsekiris like O.N. Rewane and the then Olu were against it. Well, they were greatly favored by Awolowo, whose Ijebu tribe founded several Itsekiri communities. |
CSTRR:We are not ready to fix the economy, at this rate, let's just continue to pray Oil remains relevant, because if oil goes down, Nigeria will crumble. No state, I repeat, no state in Nigeria can survive the pending doom, not even Lagos. It breaks my heart to see foreign nations dominating the West African market when there is NIGERIA. How can Ghana import fuel from Europe when we have crude in abundance here in Nigeria? We could have supplied the entire region with our refined produce, think of the jobs that we would have created by this singular act. Incompetent leaders everywhere. |
EzeNri:From the data released by WTO, we can see they balanced their import and exports. EU, China and Germany are among the top 5 exporters and importers. But same can't be said about Nigeria, we are among the top importers but no where close to top exporters. When you export, you get value and money to maintain and substain your import, but in our case, over 90% of our export is oil being pumped from the ground, so how do we substain the import if for example oil price goes below $10/bar or when it becomes worthless? I never said importation is bad, I only said we are heading to doom if we don't industrialize and balance our import and export. What have you learnt from the economic crisis in Venezuela? Isreal imports as much as it exports and the former is growing more than the former. IMF projects by next year Israeli import would grow by 5.3 percent while export by 4.2 percent.Even if Israel's import slightly exceeds Export, it won't matter much, because everything is balanced. I'm only crying because the gap between our import and export is just too wide. The only thing wrong with us is believing we will grow this economy by killing importation. We closed border against rice import, what is the price of locally produced rice in the market today? Not totally ban importation, but limit impor on what can be sourced and produce locally, for example, it doesn't make any sense that Ghana with its abundance cocoa, imports chocolates from Europe. As for the rice, with the right policies and investments, we can comfortably produce quality grains that can feed the nation. Kill every weak local industry and redirect the resources into producing those things we can with absolute cost advantage and then import those we can't.What cost advantage does Indian have for having a refinery despite them not having crude, when they can import cheaper refined products from the Middle East? Nigeria is not dumping ground.NIGERIA IS A DUMPING GROUND. Dumping ground is when foreigners ship in their refined products into the country while refusing to buy anything from you because you have absolutely nothing to offer except crude being pumped from the ground. Shame!!!! |
This isn't new, we have been crying about this for years, unfortunately, we have some trained economists like EzeNri who justifies our economic waywardness by throwing big grammars. Israel with a population of a few millions export more goods and is more productive than Nigeria with a population of 200 million, we have no single shame, what's the total landmass of Israel again? Heck, what natural resources do they even have? There is something wrong with us as a people. TMKsouth:I notice the Asians are flooding the South African market with their goods, you all shouldn't go the Nigerian way, protect all local industries at all cost! Africa must not be a dumping ground. |
gregyboy:This is a section where we are allowed to discuss about local culture and recent happenings, I don't need to be from any part or take permission from you before I can make a comment, so I don't see why you should be angry or paranoid. Ologbo is an Edoid word which means cat, this I'm not disputing because it has same meaning in my language (Onogbo), going by your logic, Eko is also a Bini word, can we have Enojies in Eko? Even if there should be an Enojie, wouldn't it be fair that he comes from the community? |
samuk:The Ologbo crisis thou. I've some questions to ask, if you don't mind. ![]() Who owns Ologbo? what language do they speak there? Can any Bini man trace his origin to the village? If no, why will an Enogie be forced on the people because the territory is being occupied by a tiny minority? If the Iyase commits a crime, he should pay, but does that guarantee the installation of a leader who isn't from the community? |
nku5:Ejoor remains one of the finest young general in the 60's - 70's. He is the only general the escaped several assassination attempts, his pro-activeness couldn't be matched by anyone. Pay homage to the legend! |
UGBE634:Ughoton in Delta State, a town before Omadino |
https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/04/breaking-itsekiri-nation-unveils-new-olu-of-warri-designate-announces-passage-of-ikenwoli/amp/ Seems OP is right with his claims. Tsola is now Itsekiri's Olu-elect Cc: mynd44 |
Ogungbemi01:I sincerely do not want to get too involved in your internal battle but I thought king selection is in the final hands of your Ife who appoints the Omoba? Also it looks you are pro-Yoruba, what about other Pro-bini in your midst? You are throwing some allegations here, how is Bini annexing your land in Edo state? Is there any issues indigenous Itsekiris are facing in Edo we aren't aware of? Cc: scholes0 see where the issue is coming from. |
scholes0:Atuwatse has three sons, Prince Tsola and Prince Toju's mom is from OGUN, Prince Omatsola's mom is from Lagos. From all indications, the ruling house wants to end the anti-yoruba rules. |
ThumbzTNA: DubaiLandLord:Was able to read something similar from a verified source: https://www.independent.ng/olu-of-warri-stool-why-prince-tsola-emiko-was-disqualified/ It looks like the ruling house isn't comfortable with the Edict that excluded their parent tribe and they claim it was implemented without proper consultation of the people. According to the above source, the Prime Minister has been suspended for initially disqualifying Prince Tsola. Also, it looks like the mothers of the three contesting princes are from Yoruba. Quite complex. |
Ogungbemi01:I never thought this would be an issue, by the little I know of the Itsekiri kingship, A prince mother must either be from Edo, Itsekiri or Yoruba. So why was the Prince Tsola rejected? Are you an Itsekiri? Can you throw more light on this? |
dignity33:I understand your points but you just need to understand that South Africa is light years ahead of us, they have a higher tax ratio, they are also far richer and their unemployment rate is lower compared to a Nigeria. We can't substain a welfare system with the current state of the nation. What we need to do presently is to look for ways to reduce unemployment. How do we do that? Encourage local production, limit importation, fix security challenges and proper re-orientation of the masses. As we speak, we aren't productive as a people, until we tackle the root problem, we aren't going anywhere. |
RichMediaSpace:Don't get me wrong bro, I'm not hyping anyone, they all contributed to the mess we are facing. Also, before anything, I would need to carry out a massive campaign in the state, our youths are so frustrating, this "DEVE" mentality gat to stop, we are killing and driving interested companies with our thuggery attitudes. So many things wrong with the average Deltan, we need reorientation, as someone who is rooted in the state happenings, we mustn't ignore this. Kwale is a gas and oil hub, having a modular refinery is long overdue, as for the glass industry, I think we already have one in Ughelli. Also, there's need to revive our sea port, if Lagos state government can manage a massive project like that, then we should also start one... Create a thread let's engage properly |
RichMediaSpace:You can create a separate thread where you can outline your plans for the state or we can simply discuss privately, yes you can shoot me a mail. What Delta State needs now is massive industrialization and am just happy about the Modular refinery coming up in Kwale, which more can spring in various locations, we can also benefit massively from the oil sector. Also, I'm making attempts to reach out to Omo-agege to pass my suggestion regarding the Aladja steel company, I don't know how silly this move is, but I'm just tired of crying and making suggestions online, we gat to make real moves. A prosperious Delta is best for us all! |
RichMediaSpace:Baba, I'm just avoiding tribal threads like this, the OP has an interior motive for starting this, probably to stir up tribal/ethnic sentiment. You noticed how she/he is trying to provoke tribal battle, glad most of you never fell for that. He/She even said Urhobos supported Ibori, when Majority of Urhobos from the early 2000's rooted massively for Ogboru, I understand the cry of injustice, but things aren't what they seem they are, Warri isn't paradise and no where in Delta South or Central is heaven, I've been to several oil rich communities in South & Central and there's nothing to write home about. infact the reason warri is expanding and still standing, Is because of the oil, once oil goes, the city might collapse because it has no solid structure. Should I talk about the high level of unemployment? Bros! |
EzeNri:So what exactly are we producing? You kill the economy by trying to produce 90% of what you consume. Where will you even get the money. It is unrealistic for a nation to produce 90% of what they consume, what we are saying is that should at least produce 30% of locally consumed goods I always tell people. You create jobs by building companies. The service, manufacturing and knowledge sector are all needed to create a stable economy, one shouldn't be substituted for the other. China, US, India, Canada are applying these and they are fairing okay |
EzeNri:The NITEL analogy doesn't suit our discussion, I'm not against private companies taking over incompetent government owned companies, I'm only against us importing more than 90% of the goods consumed by Nigerians. Every developed nation in this world practices one form of protectionism or the other, years back, the Canadian government applied quotas and a 25% tariff on steel imports from China and other countries to avoid becoming a dumping ground, the almighty US has tightening tariffs for Sugar and some other commodities so as to protect local farmers/manufacturers etc. You talked about comparative advantage, please as a Nigerian, can you tell me what comparative advantage we have over India or China? Even in the petroleum sector, we are no match. EzeNri:Are you really asking why dollar kept soaring high? For a trained economists, you ought to know the price of crude almost crashed our economy... That was possible because of bad leadership that depended solely on crude export to fund the economy without improving on other sectors. |
chamboy:We have few thinkers, forget about the degrees and whatever title we may have acquired in life, if we can't think properly, these certificates are useless. Free trade will be beneficial to Africans only after we have fixed some sectors of the economy and we can compete fairly with others, believe me, once the Asians starts flooding our market with cheap goods, every local manufacturers will be pushed out of business, this will lead to more people out of job, which indirectly creates more poor homes. Does it even make sense that Nigeria, an oil producing state imports fuel from non oil producing states? When we say policies should be made to fix these issues, these trained individuals will come out, saying how importing cheap fuel is beneficial to Nigerians. I'm yet to see a nation that imports 90% of what they consume and still manages to progress. |
Chanchit:So they now grow crude oil? Cocoa doesn't grow in every terrain, Cement raw materials aren't found everywhere, so how can a nation get all these at once? Importing everything we consume will impoverish us, Let's take the oil industry for example, we had to opportunity to generate billions of dollars from the sector by fixing our refineries and expanding on inbuilt capacity, we could also have flooded the West African market with our refined produce, but instead, Asians and Europeans are dominating despite us being rich in oil and gas. Think of the millions of jobs that would have been created should we have 5 functional refineries (We already have the west African market to dominate), think of the improved standards of living etc. With importation, only few benefits at the detriment of millions of people. Reason this out. |
EzeNri:So a trained Economist is okay with Nigeria's import dependent nature? Don't you know how many industries have died due to importation and the fact that we can't compete with the Chinese and Indians? You all should stop throwing grammar and face reality, there is no nation in this world that imports 90% of what they consume and still progresses, if I'm lying, list two. We must learn to balance import and export, not advising us to continue with massive importation. THINK!!!!!!!!!! |
Switchman:Oga you went too far with these whole stuff, the lady is reasonable as far as I'm concerned. There was no job forthcoming, why didn't you use your car for Uber ? instead you stayed at home, and still expected the young lady to serve you, because you are a man I guess. She is even cheerful not to deny you sex. |
Chuxx84:Lol.. So you believe your mom is selfish, because a woman you just married said so? hahahahahaha Bro, your mom wont be alive forever, the few years she have got here on earth, make it count, provide for her basic needs, you don't need to tell your wife since she doesn't like your mom, judging by her utterances. Speak to your siblings and see how they can assist mama in any little way, few thousands from them once a while won't be bad. |
alfredilly:You are correct, what happened then was that, the locals never had the skills nor the interest in harvesting palms. Also, in some eastern Yoruba territories, some of their Palms were too wild which was a big problem for the locals until the Urhobos came in and started massive palm oil trade. This changed the economic situation of some Ikale territories like Okitipupa. you can read more on (https://www.nairaland.com/5916221/look-urhobo-migration-okitipupa-other). Even Edo state has similar story, the Urhobos dominated and ran the palm oil business. |
Salatavor:Do we look serious to you? |
pozehnani:There you got it wrong, it was probably your first time and so you definitely wouldn't have got the perfect taste. Did you use native or agric Banga? what species did you use? (Ubeletientien, Utiako etc?) Made use of cat fish and other assorted? Until you eat the one prepared by a typical Urhobo lady, you shouldn't talk down the meal. Banga soup no get mate. |
martineverest:Bini is an ancient civilization and Deltans wouldn't have existed if they weren't there, so I'm not here for comparisons. Just stating that, The Urhobos were known for their Palm oil exploits that they dominated several states in the 30's. Also, that the Bini's exported palm oil to Europe before the Urhobos existed doesn't mean that Palm Trees weren't found in territories the Urhobos migrated to when they left Bini. No tribe in modern Nigeria process palm oil like the Urhobos, this has been their way of life and even ethnic groups like the Ikale's will testify to this fact. |
Mikecold:You are very correct, my forebears explored those territories in the 30's/40's and they told us how rich Edo is in Palm trees. |
Midas01:Ignore most of their rants, they are simply pained as you can see from response. I've seen how these guys, behave, how they degrade an entire group. An independent researcher came to Nigeria, most likely to have tastes every local meal before coming to the conclusion that Banga soup is special, but according to Nigerians, if the soup isn't popular or accepted all over the nation, then the report is false or bias. Just another of their superiority BS. |
Mikecold:I know Edo state has lots of palm trees, but Delta state is also blessed with it, the Urhobos grew up in the art of harvesting and processing palm oil because of its abundance in their locality, this led them into exploring other states like Edo and Ondo in the early 30's (During the palm oil boom). |
jimyjames:The only common thing between Ofe Akwu and banga soup is just the palm nut extract, if they taste differently, then they aren't thesame. The word or name "banga" isn't very common in the East, most Easterners would find it difficult to explain what banga is unless you call the native name. |
