PoliticsAbacha Never Stole? - By Ochereome Nnanna Editoral Commentator From Vanguard by ehissi(op): 11:26pm On May 24, 2016

“Nigeria is awaiting receipt from Swiss Govt. of $320 million, identified as illegally taken from Nigeria under Abacha” – Buhari @NGR President, 5:09 PM – 27 APR 2016

WHEN Twitter-addicted Nigerians stumbled on this posting on President Muhammadu Buhari’s Twitter handle last week, the whole Internet went abuzz, with most people expressing their dismay at Buhari’s refusal to call a spade by its correct name. Before we go on, let us try to reason out the meaning of this statement, especially against the backdrop of its nexus to our history where Abacha and Buhari’s paths crossed.

It is obvious why the President or the operator of his Twitter handle chose to describe this amount (which is over N100 billion, a third of what the Federal, State Local governments shared in February 2016) as money “identified as illegally taken from Nigeria under Abacha”, rather than the usual “Abacha loot”. The answer is simple.

Buhari, long before he was elected president, stubbornly insisted that Abacha “never stole”, and that he was not corrupt. “Illegally taken from Nigeria” is a ploy to sidestep the word: “stolen”. “Under Abacha” portrays it as if other people, not Abacha himself, committed the “illegality” without Abacha’s knowledge.

Some unknown individuals were taking money from Nigeria and lodging it in Abacha’s Swiss bank accounts? For what purpose? Perhaps, they knew that our economy would be in trouble in the future and decided to “save” for this rainy day for us? If that is what President Buhari wants to say, let him say so openly, so that we all will join him in congratulating the Abacha family for the sacrifices their patriarch made for Nigeria.

In the past sixteen years, series of sums of money in foreign currency have been brought back from Western countries, especially Switzerland, where former military Head of State, the late General Sani Abacha stashed funds which he looted from the Nigerian treasury. These monies have always been called “Abacha loot”. Abacha is the only former ruler boldly ascribed, even in official circles, to have “stolen” or “looted” our public funds. He certainly was not the only one who did so. And most of us believe that he was probably not the biggest looter. Then, how come it is only his loots that are being “identified” and repatriated? Is it because he is dead?

If he were still alive like most of his fellow former rulers, would there be any such thing as “Abacha loot”? I doubt it, since his predecessors and successors who probably took more have never even been officially accused or made to return their own “loots”. In fact, one of them majestically struts over the landscape calling other people corrupt without justifying his own obvious affluence after his long stint in the Presidency. Are we a nation of cowards and dastards, mobbing Abacha and his estate simply because he is dead?

More questions: if Abacha had not arrested, tried and jailed General Olusegun Obasanjo for his part in the 1995 coup attempt to unseat him, would Obasanjo have launched the campaign to recover Abacha loot? If Abacha had not died and he played a role in the election of Obasanjo as President in 1999 as Generals Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Theophilus Danjuma and their civilian Northern cohorts had done, would Obasanjo have started the campaign to retrieve the Abacha loot?

Still more questions: if Buhari had been the one elected as the civilian president of Nigeria in 1999, would he even be talking about receiving money from Swiss Government “illegally taken away” under his regime since he maintains, against all concrete evidence, that Abacha never stole our money? So, is it only when a person deals with us and dies that he becomes corrupt, but when he treats us nicely (as Abacha did to Buhari) he becomes a “saint”? If Abacha had not rehabilitated Buhari after being jailed by Babangida; If Abacha had not appointed him as the Executive Chairman of the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), where he was given unlimited powers to spend billions of Naira between 1996 and 1998, would Buhari have stuck out his neck for him and say he was not corrupt?

Is this the mentality we take with us in fighting corruption, making sure that those who helped us are regarded as clean, while those who wronged us are pursued with a single-minded quest to retrieve their loot and sent to jail? Is this our national standard for integrity? How are we sure that retired Col. Ja’afaru Isa, a close Buhari acolyte who was reluctantly arrested, briefly detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC, and released after a couple of days for allegedly returning part of his share of Col. Sambo Dasuki’s bonanza, actually returned anything?

Everybody calls President Buhari a “man of integrity”, in spite of certain things we read and hear which do not add up to conclusively justify that branding. Buhari made his declared assets public. But he never disclosed their financial worth, nor did he let us know where they could be found as late President Umaru Yar’Adua voluntarily did. He never followed Yar’ Adua’s exemplary footsteps of including the assets of his wife. And from the look of things, ever-smiling Madam Aisha Buhari is very well-to-do, what with her reported donation of N135 million to displaced persons in Adamawa during the campaigns last year, which has not been denied.

I still cannot reconcile the fact that Buhari, as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had to borrow N25 million from banks to pay for his form in October, 2014 when his wife could so easily have given it to him from her own resources. There were even some reports that Buhari was once ejected from his “rented” mansion, No 11, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Asokoro, Abuja in 2012. That report was never debunked. Elaborate efforts have always been made to brand Buhari as a retired general who lived on his military pension before he became elected President. Yet, when he became President and the foreign exchange crunch set in, he told parents who have their children in foreign schools that they should look for forex wherever they could find it as the Federal Government could no longer afford to provide it. When reminded that he had his own children in foreign schools, he simply retorted:

“I can afford it”.

These conflicting signals about our President and his true mindset on corruption as well as his real standing financially, is being noticed, and nobody is a dummy. Even the younger generation of Nigerians are watching, reading and taking note of this confusion and wondering what “integrity” actually means here in Nigeria. It is not only the youth that are confused. I am certainly no longer a youth, but I am confused!

All details correct inputed. I'm so sorry about the error. @King 406 i understand there are lots of people like you on nairaland that are just here to criticize others and make them look bad so I'd just ignore you for now. No apologies needed, I need something tangible instead.
It's obvious to even the most simple minded of Mercedes Benz fans that you know nothing about Mercedes Benz.

If you took offense at King406's comment, then let me apologize in advance before I give mine.

AMG cars - which are a special series of Sporty version of classic cars made by Mercedes - have one thing in common; their model numbers are double digits as opposed to their regular models which are usually Tripple digits. This is the standard format of issuing model numbers that Mercedes Benz uses to distinguish AMG cars from regular cars.

For example, an AMG version of a G wagon Mercedes Benz would be the G86 or G63. It would sound dumb to a Mercedes Benz fan to bring a G wagon labeled AMG and the model is G550 and you say it's an AMG model??

It's either the model number or year is wrong or the Metal badge displaying the model number at the rear end of the car is wrong.

Thats why King406 can boldly tell you without even inspecting the car that Your car isn't an AMG model. AMG C65 or C55 from Mercedes sounds more like it and not C230 AMG.

The steering wheel and even the dashboard suggests to me - depending on where the car was made - that attempts were made to p!mp the car.

It has the dashboard of a regular 05/06 C class but the steering wheel of a C class coupe - I stand to be corrected on this - but yet you called it an 05!! Quite interesting.........

Once again, as for the C230 AMG; that is wrong labelling.

Hope you understand now...................no pun intended!!

The biggest fraud in Nigeria's history was the shoeless, clueless, corrupt Ineffectual Buffoon under whose watch BH seized not only territories but also thousands of innocent citizens while his NSA and Service Chiefs made themselves billionaires from Security funds.

And the worst set of Nigerians are those who call the BH atrocious kidnapping of the Chibok Girls a scam despite incontrovertible evidences of the abduction. One has to wonder whether the white matter in their skull is not Akamu instead of brain.

People with functioning brains must understand that as the Sambisa forest gets cleared by the Army, many more hostages will be freed and some of them might turn out to be part of the Chibok Girls. Why were the previously rescued women from Sambisa not called the Chibok Girls?

Common sense has departed many people just because their useless candidate lost election.

PoliticsRe: How Chibokgirl, Serah Luka, Was Rescued — Nigerian Army by ehissi(m): 11:27am On May 20, 2016
kahal29:
Hours after Amina Ali, one of the Chibok girls rescued on Wednesday from the insurgents, met with President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Nigerian Army announced the rescue of another of the girls on Thursday evening.

Army spokesperson, Usman Sani, a colonel, who confirmed the rescue, gave the name of the rescued girl as Serah Luka, said to be number 157 on the list of abducted school girls.

Mr. Usman later narrated how the abducted girl was rescued.

He said in a statement, “At about 11.00am today, Thursday, 19th May 2016, troops of 231 Battalion, 331 Artillery Regiment (AR), Detachment of Armed Forces Special Forces (AFSF) 2, Explosive Ordinance (EOD) Team and Civilian Vigilante group of Buratai, conducted clearance operations at Shettima Aboh, Hong and Biladdili general area in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

“During the operations, the troops killed 35 Boko Haram terrorists and recovered several arms and ammunitions and other items. In addition, they rescued 97 women and children held captives by the Boko Haram terrorists.

“We are glad to state that among those rescued is a girl believed to be one of the Chibok Government Secondary School girls that were abducted on 14th April 2014 by the Boko Haram terrorists.

Second rescued Chibok schoolgirl, Serah Luka
“Her name is Miss Serah Luka, who is number 157 on the list of the abducted school girls. She is believed to be the daughter of Pastor Luka. During debriefing, the girl revealed that she was a JSS1 student of the school at the time they were abducted.

She further added that she hails from Madagali, Adamawa State. She averred that she reported at the school barely two months and one week before her unfortunate abduction along with other girls over two years ago.

“She added that there other three girls who fled from Shettima Aboh when the troops invaded the area earlier today which led to their rescue. She is presently receiving medical attention at the medical facility of Abogo Largema Cantonment, Biu, Borno State.”

The first rescued girl, Amina Nkeki, was reportedly rescued Wednesday and was received by President Muhammadu Buhari in a State House ceremony Thursday afternoon, with a four-month-old child she reportedly gave birth to while in captivity.

Amina was rescued by the civilian JTF close to the notorious Sambisa forest, over two years after her abduction by militants.

More than 200 girls are still believed to be held by the insurgents.

http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/203746-updated-how-second-chibok-schoolgirl-serah-luka-was-rescued-nigerian-army.html
While I am happy that Pastor Luka's daughter AkA Number 157 has returned, I doubt that she is one of over 200 chibok school girls that were taken.

We were told initially, that all the abducted girls were SSS3 students that only came for their physics exam. The school - like other schools in the area - had been close down due to security reasons but the chibok girls were recalled to come and write their exams - against the initial advise of the Nigerian military that suggested to Governor Shetimma that the girls be transferred to schools outside the area to write their exams.

Nobody questioned shetimma for his decision because the first thing he said after he left a closed meeting with Jonathan at the state house was that "The Nigerian military couldn't defeat Boko Haram because it was much stronger than the military and better equipped". This put Jonathan, the Nigerian military between a rock and a hard place.

This was what the Media and the APC focused on.

Everybody forgot to ask why shetimma chose to ignore the advise of the military, it was only after this abduction, that schools were closed.

What is a JSS1 girl doing in school when school isn't open?

Also they were not taken when the exams were on going, they were taken a day to the physics exams from their hostels.

Why did Pastor Luka - if truly she was among the kidnapped Chibok girls - give permission for his daughter (who obviously just got into school - when you consider the time-frame when WAEC is usually written and the fact that they said she was in JSS1) to be in school at a time when school was officially closed??

It is most unfortunate that the Military and the ministry of Information will allow themselves to be used as instruments of political malingering over the Chibok girls in such a shameless manner. God is watching their children

I believe that this story is manufactured to give Buhari something to talk about on May 29, the same way the "elimination of 23,000 Ghost workers" was given to Buhari to use to address David Cameron - British PM - when he called Nigeria Fantastically corrupt.

How is "ghost workers elimination" done without proper audit of staff. And even at that, 23,000 ghost workers for that matter. A high number of that magnitude would have been achieved through vigorous audit of the entire civil service which considering it size would have taken months.

But then again, Nigerians and the rest of the world were more focused on getting cameron to apologize than even considering whether Buhari's comments were true. The last time such a serious audit was undertaken, it was during the Jonathan administration and the exercise is long over, where did they get their figures from??

As far as I am concerned, this story is just that.........a story.

It is false, it is political fabrication of the most corrupt and shameless order. It is nothing but Pencil in the Hands of Lai Mohammed!! angry

You seem to be analysing the immediate effects of the subsidy removal.

The long term effect of the subsidy removal is an advantage to the country as the money would be invested in some other sector and developments.

It seems you haven't queued for fuel in the past couple of weeks. The marketers we pay subsidy to are not delivering and the rate of fuel at filling stations run as high as 300 naira per litre if not more.

The suffering in this country is surplus but one can obviously know what the outcome of the strike could be which is either the government ignores the NLC or reduce the fuel rate to 100 naira + which was their initial target.

I never said I'm comfortable with the increase, but I won't tolerate marketers taking free money from the government while the citizens are suffering.

By blaming the present administration for the issues you listed and saying the government should have have handled the issues this or that way means we are facing issues that we shouldn't be facing, but we are because 16 years of PDP did not possition the country properly to deal with the challenges we are dealing with.

Did 16 years of PDP and looting and stealing $20 billion plus power money get us out of darkness? No

Did 16 years of PDP and wholesale and institutionalized corruption and incompetence deliver infrastructures to better our existence ? No.

Did 16 years of PDP and wholesale and wholesale and institutionalized corruption and incompetence improve our federal accounts with the funds they looted and shared? No.

Did 16 years of PDP and wholesale and institutionalized corruption and incompetence deliver1 single refinery to help us out of the ever present fuel shortages? No.

Did 16 years of PDP and wholesale and institutionalized corruption and incompetence maintain and keep running our 4 refineries to prevent shortages. No.

What did GEJ and his administration to his service chiefs who looted $15 billion while our men and women in uniform die on the battlefield? He promoted and gave them National awards.

We are still gwtting bombarded daily with new revelations about this and that billions looted and diverted here and their so what's your.point exactly.? That that rotten and decayed looting and stealing government did a great job and we are in this mess because of this less than a year administration.?

Nigerians did the right thing by getting rid of Jona and his looting and stealing gang because it stopped the national bleading, it stopped the daylight looting and stealing.

The office of the NSA is no longer looting and sharing our money.

Our funds is no longer funding dubious spiritual prayers or paying for Metuh style presidential assingments.

Our meager foreign reserve is ni longer for corrupt, pointless and silly activities like importing toothpicks and other rubhish.

Stealing is now coruption.

Looters for the 1st time are on trial and set to go to jail.

The 2nd Niger bridge is finally getting built with direct FG money on the table to fund it with after 16 years of PDP lies, gimmicks, deceptions, incompetence and bogus tolling arrangements.

Lagos Ibadan express is now getting full and final attention.

Lagos Abuja rail is on track.

Lagos calabar rail sytem and the largest public works project in Africa is set to commence with money and federal will on the table.

Our looted funds stashed abroad is heading back to Nigeria to serve put needs.

Boko Haram is no longer invisible to our galant troops.

Our image on the global stage is shining again.

Petrol shortages is about to be over forever because we consume 33.6m liters per day, but ordinary Dangote refinery will pump out 55.2 million liters per day with left over to export.

Of course we have challenges, but we've gained so much in less than a year and better days are ahead.

We know the problem with many of you, but fact remains that GEJ is gone for good, stealing is now corruption and we have major job creating projects, pooicies and programs coming up, our economy is geting repositioned to serve us better.
I vividly remember that when President Buhari was sworn into office in far less than 2 months, our refineries were all on stream.
Lai Mohammed attributed this development to Mr President. When Mr President was asked in an exclusive interview how he got the refineries to work; he humbly admitted that he did nothing, that he was still operating within the confines of the last budget.

It was at this point the Lai Muhammed attributed the state of the refineries to the "Body Language" of Mr President. So don't even bring that up. All of our refineries as at now aren't in order; except you want to call Kaichukwu a liar. By his own assertion we are facing the worst scarcity of fuel in over a decade, only 3 refineries are working and even at that below full capacity.

Kareto is sound proof that government lied about Boko-Haram's military capacity. For 10 full hours, Boko-haram leveled 113Battallion in kareto and kept a combined team of the army, Air Force, navy, counter terrorism units of the police and special forces of the Nigerian immigration in the theatre of war.

A militant group that has been crushed and has capacity to hit only "soft targets" doesn't do that.

As for the cases in court, if truly their trials are not gross ineptitude and corruption, why is Dasuki on trial for the diversion of #25billion - a mere $80million when Buhari told the whole world that his arch nemesis stole $2.1billion, a whooping #413.7billion at official rate.?? What of the remaining $2.02Billion.??

Also why has DSS refused to produce Dasuki to face charges for a case prosecuted by EFCC but investigated by DSS?

Why did Rotimi Jacobs -EFCC lead prosecutor handling Buhari's trial - file for a secret trial when Buhari was called to present his defense in court and when the judge refused, decided to really busy prosecuting other cases??

Has it even occurred to you that CCT doesn't even have the power to send Saraki to jail??

Corruption has been dealt with, and looters are out of the system, leakages have been plugged but there is hardship in the land? Explain if you can??
