Jarus: Good one.

Just a few comments as a Judge in this contest.

NEWACCA
Your arguments are sound and persuasive. I also admire your tenacity. But I deducted 0.5 from your content score because you referred to Ahmadu Bello as a former Sultan of Sokoto. He was neer Sultan of Sokoto, he was Sardauna of Sokoto. The current holder of that position is Alhaji Abubakar Dan Alhaji or Alhaji Sheu Malami(can't recall exactly for now, and no time to consult Google). But altogether, you did a very good job.

COOGER
You raised the intellectual bar in the debate. I admire your command of English. Your versatility is no doubt impeccable. But you were too general. You hardly dwelt on specifics.

BREEZY
A fresh breeze. I like your calmly disposition. You were the dark horse in the race. You also did very well in logical analysis of the topic, but you would have done better if you backed up your arguments with more facts.

Altogether, all the contestants did well.
@ Jarus, u shouldn't fault Coogar for not being too specific. Debate like this ought be from d purview of generalized notions not narrowing to much examples that could sPark controversies and sentiments

newacca: I continue to argue that godfatherism is not the main cause of corruption in Nigeria. My fellow debater is centralizing his argument mainly on Obasanjo and PDP,which I believe it is slightly off the line of argument. While he forgets that individual character is quite different from general phenomenon that affects the society. I want to state categorically that godfatherism is not by anyway a major cause of corruption in Nigeria not when indiscipline is a call of the day. Not when the absence of effective rules, regulations and policies are not featuring in the nation.

What I am driving out of this is that some leaders have ruled this nation and have held political offices without godfathers, yet they mismanaged funds, and promote different kinds of corruption far beyond godfatherism.
Corruption started killing the developmental growth in Nigeria from Shagari administration,Buhari administration,Babangida administration(our case study) These rulers do not have godfathers and godfatherism has not been prominent in the other arms of government in their era,yet corruption practices continue to elevate. If godfatherism does not exist in Nigerian politics, the main causes of corruption in Nigeria will still prevail, unless we change our orientation towards a soceity free of indiscipline and bad culture.

My fellow debater argued that Adams Oshiomole Governor of Edo state has been consistence in his administration because he does not have godfather. Are you telling me that if Adams Oshiomole's ulterior motive is to enrich his pocket with public fund and he actually carry out his motive, will he be able to gain the heart of the people of Edo to vote for him in the second term? If Oshiomole has not been transparent in his system of administration will the Edo people re-elect him?

Fashola against Tinubu

The former Governor of Lagos state,Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who is a godfather to the incumbent Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola. Why did Fashola refused to dance to Tinubu's tune? Why did he got elected again for the second term in office, after the report of numerous disagreement between him and his political godfather and despite the fact that he got to the seat of power with the support of his godfather? Reasons are not far-fetched. When an individual possesses admirable pedigree, high moral standard, leadership skill, good deal of discipline and prioritizing the interest of his people above personal gain;he will be able to run the affairs of the public office without being influenced by the strong forces of his godfather. Even if the incumbent governor has agreed to the conspiracy of looting and embezzling before he won the election, his high standard of moral and discipline has made him to disagree to Tinubu's political manipulation. Truly, wolves lose their teeth but not their nature. Now tell me,if Fashola has selfishly embraced corruption emanating from the ungodly act of greed, moral decadence and selfcentredness. will you blame it on godfatherism or individualism?

Missing funds in Obasanjo's administration

There were wide spread allegation of various public fund embezzlement in the administration of Gen.Obansanjo Rtd. both in the military regime(1976-1979) and democratic ruling (1999-2003/2003-2007) Prominent of the missing funds are listed below:

*2.8 billion naira petroleum fund- 1976-1979
*200 billion naira ecological fund- 1999-2007
*19.5 billion Aviation fund- 2007-2011
These funds got missing during the administration of Gen.Obasanjo Rtd. without giving transparent account of how the funds were mismanaged. was Gen.Obasanjo Rtd. been elected in the 1999 election with the support of godfather? Can you tell me Gen.Obansanjo's administration was transparent?

If the collective wish of the masses supersedes the selfish resolve of some powerful individuals(godfathers) who believe they can dictate the affairs of millions of people from the confines of their bedrooms and the masses you speak for, abolish the corrupt practice of worshipping people in high places because of their wealth,do you think godfatherism will be the threat to our democracy? Hell no! We will only get things right in our society when we instigate high standard of moral value in the heart of our people;both young and old. When we frown at public display of wealth in occasion i.e spraying of money in public functions, parties and burial ceremonies;when you stop to collect bags and envelope from politicians before voting them.

James Ibori, the "flamboyant" former governor of Delta state was convicted for money laundering and embezzlement of the fund of people of Oil rich Delta state. The "common thief" as tagged by a British prosecutor,Sasha Weils was able to defraud his own people for his personal enrichment. Tell me,did he act on the manipulation, threat or blackmail of godfathers?

Let me not bore you all with long list of major problems that promotes corruption in our beloved country. Rather I will like implore us to look beyond godfatherism as the major cause of our problem (CORRUPTION) in Nigeria and change our characters and view towards proffering lasting solution to the causes, and stamp out corruption.
I pray u carry d night.. It's far more herculean to sail against the tide but so far your arguments are mind blowing. Braovo!

coogar: of course.....I lack the nonsense basics of acknowledging co-debaters, time keeper and the panel of judges like people used to do in the 70s. when was the last time you saw a proper debate of international standard? if you compare what you think is the normal standard to the way it's done in saner climes, then you'd be embarrassed!

i have given you your 3 mins of fame now, kindly jog along......nicely!

LiteratureRe: Nairaland's Literary & Debating Day ! by Elueme: 6:33pm On Jul 22, 2012
shymmex: Good evening the panel of judges, co-debaters, and the audience.

I'm shymmex the voice of the masses – and my argument is in support of the motion that, godfatherism/ prebendalism/ clientelism in Nigeria Politics as being the main cause of corruption and developmental crises.

My Scholarship/Argument:
Great thinkers such as Pareto, Mosca, Michels, and Marx too devoted their political analysis to how power is used and misused by the elite class in different contexts. The domination of power by the hegemonic class in many parts of the contemporary world can thus be said to be nothing new but has a robust pedigree. The main lesson from all these works is that the study of political elites and leadership is very important for understanding the trajectories of development in any society. An important issue raised by Pareto and Marx in their works is that political elites insulate and isolate themselves from their society and try as much as possible to reproduce themselves from within. They do all possible within their reach to ensure that non-elites do not join their membership. To ensure this, the political elites maintain a safe, functional distance from the rest of the society. They reproduce themselves on an individual and selective basis in a process which Pareto specifically referred to as the 'circulation of elites'. The criteria for such elite recruitment are often parochial and the process is usually done in a manner that does not in any way compromise the traditional integrity of the dominant elite class.

The 'political godfathers' in Nigeria build an array of loyalists around them and use their influence, which is often tied to monetary considerations, to manipulate the rest of the society. Political godfathers use their influence to block the participation of others in Nigerian politics. They are political gatekeepers: they dictate who participates in politics and under what conditions. The role of such people is highly injurious to the advancement of popular, participatory democracy in Nigeria. Political godfathers are responsible for most of the pre- and post-election violence that we have seen in Nigeria.

The phenomenon of godfathers, are strictly instrumental relationship with their clients. Their main goal is to use their client to attain selfish goals; the latter too do the same. The relationship between the two of them thus has little or nothing with the larger society the two of them claim to lead.

Richard Joseph in his book; “Democracy and prebendal politics in Nigeria: The rise and fall of the second republic” asserted that the phenomena of 'prebendalism (a system of political patronage/godfatherism’ employment)' and 'clientelism (a social order which depends on relations of patronage/godfatherism)' as the two phenomena that led to the collapse of the second republic in Nigeria. The same problem led to the demise of the third republic. And if care is not taken, it is going to lead to the collapse of the present democratisation process in Nigeria.

PS: Richard Joseph described ‘godfatherism’ in the Nigerian context as ‘prebendalism’ and 'clientelism’.

The difference between these godsons and their godfathers is that the godfathers have 'a piece of the state' in their pockets. The power of the godfather lies in his position in government, the number of privileged people he has or has successfully planted in government, and hence his ability to directly or indirectly manipulate bureaucratic regulations. The godfathers in Nigerian politics are a set of oppressive elites whose stock in trade is the 'installation' of unpopular persons to fill vacant or un-vacant political offices using very crude means and blackmail.

Obasanjo as a case study:
Wole Soyinka asserted in 2004 that, the greatest disservice President Obasanjo has done to the nation was to have promoted the cult of godfatherism, its illegalities, its naked violence, and its corruption.

Obasanjo and PDP’s political coup in the SW against the incumbent AD (progressives) in 2003 showed why godfatherism isn’t ideal for Nigeria. PDP rule in the SW birthed political assassinations, underdevelopment, and extreme corruption.

Tony Anenih as a case study:
The case of Tony Anenih vs Adams Oshiomole in Edo State weakened the argument for the inevitability of godfathers in politics, with the latter being a progressive without a godfather. The tenure of Lucky Igbinedion (Annenih’s godson) was the darkest period in the history of Edo state. Igbinedion’s tenure was ridden with political assassinations, underdevelopment, and extreme corruption.
Guy, u had a good insight into d subject of discuss and you researched well which gave u a good preamble but argument of this nature had better been left empirical without specificity @ individuals or personalities which could cause biased judgement. For the sake of educating this house from misinformation, Lucky Igbinedion was no time a godson 2 Anenih(mayb @ d onset). He was a consensus of the pdP prior to 1999 election because of his outstanding performance as a local govt chairman in Oredo in the 3rd rePublic and also to compensate him 4 d loss he suffered with NRC in d 1992 gubernatorial election wch people proscribed to the Oba's disapproval due to d difference btw d Igbinedion senr and HRH.. D problem d pledged Edo PDP was becos of d crisis btw Lucky nd Anenih when d party had 2 functional secretariats jst b4 Osunbor came in 2007.. Fact: Lucky was neva a stooge of Anenih, tho I agree they were both insensitive to d masses

PoliticsRe: What Are The Projects Commissioned By Gej? by Elueme: 11:32am On Jul 22, 2012
edicolove: While I think scoring GEJ now will be too early, I can jumpstart that with the following:

In roads, Zaria-Funtua-Gusau roads, Oshodi-Apapa with expansion and drainage works, dedicated bridge frm liverpool roundabout to Tin can ports, trailer park, Dualisation of Ibadan -Ilorin, ENUGU-Onitsha, completion of OWERRI -Onitsha, 9th mile, ongoing reconstruction of Benin-Ore-Sagamu highway measuring over 265 km, Kano-Maidugri Dualisation. Keffi -Akwanga-Lafia, award of Afikpo-Okigwe, Auchi-Okene being handled by Setraco. Loko-Eweta-Karishi bridge, Kolo-Nembe -Brass to mention but a few.

In Transport, massive reforms at the ports. Sanitisation and reduction of operating agencies to 7. Introduction of 24 hrs ports operation. Ongoing Construction of light gauge train railways across t4 cardinal point of the federation

In Aviation, massive reconstruction of major airports in the land, Enugu airport is undergoing total rehabilitation. The domestic wing of Abuja airport is also being reconstructed with expansion of roads and car parks. Same fr the international wing and the kano airports

In Education, establishment of 9 new federal universities in less than 1 year. Constructed 2 new campuses of the Nigerian law schools in Yenagoa and Yola respectively. Launched the Almajiri schools for education of itenerant Islamic pupils in the north wFhich Buhari and other northern leaders abandoned. Increased funding to almost 400 billion to education thereby setting an all time highest record. Reinvigorated the inspectorate oversight of schools leading to the revocation of some licenses from universities. Executed the landmark upgrade of university lecturers retirement age from 65 to 70.

In agriculture, for the first time in our history, we have a clearly defined agricultural policy which is targeted towards maximum utilisation of cassava for growth thru the launch of the cassava bread campaign. The policy is intended to reduce our reliance on imported wheat so as to encourage local production of cassava and it's conversion to flour for bakery. The FG has in less than one year eliminated the middlemen cartel that fed fat on fertiliser distribution at the expense of local farmers. Now through deregulation reforms, fertiliser is now accessible in the open market. he has also embarked on massive construction of silos and has increased import duties on the importation of rice in order to encourage local farmers. The efforts of the minister has been so appreciable that the world bank assisted with over 50 billion Naira for fertiliser redistribution scheme/ silos. The CBN has also set up a 500 billion loan scheme which is to assist farmers. Farmers database is being compiled nationwide and improved seedlings are being distributed to them.

The power roadmap is on as you know and PHCN has been unbundled. The PIB has been sent to the NASS and is expected to be passed into law as soon as it scales the NASS.

Like I said, we hope he succeeds for the benefit of Nigeria but I will prefer to start accessing him at least, after 2 to 3 years.
They are very much aware of these achievements but are rather too blind to acknowledge the truth.. They are on a mission to assist their paymasters on the much talked about"pull him dowm syndrome" soon they ll be enveloped in shame

All you have to do is make compelling arguments for your subject.

If they are not being biased at all, they will see that Lagos may have commissioned more projects than the FG in the last one year.
these projs being commissioned were initiated since his first term.. Or your brain's memory is so short 2 knw he is serving a second tenure

PoliticsRe: Who Are The Top 5 Performing Governors In Nigeria? by Elueme: 3:31pm On Jul 21, 2012
The above governors are unarguably the best the country has at the moment but for time, resources and trust I will pick Akpabio over Fashola and Rochas. Reason: Some have argued that Rochas is performing to earn himself the presidency. U can't rule it off, just 2 days ago he confirmed this suspicion. Fashola has too much money to perform after all no administrator has failed in Lagos even from the military era.. Akpabio has been tested and trusted, all he's doing is out of a genuine love and interest of his kinsmen... Even before the state became this wealthy, Akpabio has set mercenary in place to make the Akwaibom dream a reality.. He is not dreaming of presidency or anything, he is serving his second term and still blazing
AKPABIO GODSWILL
ROCHAS OKOROCHA

It means Key performance Index and it is used to track the performance of individuals and corporate entities (including public and private). This approach which seems to be new with Nigerian ministries is a welcome approach, because you will vividly see which ministry is performing based on their outlined objectives and those that are not performing. It can also be used to track budget implementation and work-done so far.

PoliticsRe: GEJ - Boko Haram Disorganised My Plans For Govt by Elueme: 8:36am On Jul 18, 2012
The issue here is not 2015..rather performance... Boko haram was never an agenda prior to 2011.. Candidates contested and campaigned based on the prevailing circumstances in the country then.. The biggest challenge was fairer electoral system, unemployment, wealth creation, diversification of economy, security( kidnapping and armed robbery).. GEJ in one year has not failed Nigerians.. Our economy is at over 6% growth, we are achieving transparency in the oil sector with the numerous economic benefits, agriculture is booming again after over 40 yrs of neglect, our parents and relatives in the country sides can start smiling, many unemployed youths in urban drift for a white collar job can now take advantage of this new opportunities, Nigeria is set to start making large export of agric produce, power has generally improved all over the country even when the sector has not been fully deregulated.. From barely 1500 nwts in 2010 to 4000mwts in dec 2011 and more power plants are under construction and PHCN has now adopted cost reflective tariff to encourage foreign interest and participation, NERC has challenged every Nigerian who suspects over billing in tariff to petition it( open door policy), from a report I read weeks ago several thousands of foreign interest have registered or are registering to do business in Nigeria at the moment all because of the economic policies of this admin., U-WIN Promo; beneficiaries are currently receiving their benefits with the resultant ripple effects in the e onomy vis a vis employment creation in few years from now... In the area of roads construction, Nigeria has never had it this great in just one year, every zone in Nigeria has one or two or more road rehabilitation or construction some of which are already completed.. Is our electoral system? Infact this alone is enough reason to mk GEJ A live president... For the first time even the opposition was disappointed because their popularity comes from going to court with unnecessary publicity.. Even oshobaba, my own state gov paid a thank u visit to GEJ... Kidnapping and other vices are on the decline .In federal appointed, no region is crying of marginalization . We can go on and on... ALL THESE ACHIEVEMENTS IN ONE YEAR.... Hasn't this man tried? However, we are restrategising on tackling the BH insurgence which was Neva in GEJ blueprint for Nigeria. Soon it will Passover us.. Say amen!
