Dangote became rich through various dubious means. During Abacha regime, he enjoyed monopolyin arms and ammunition importation that made him rich than the Dantata's family. It was through the importation of guns during Abacha that made him standout as a rich man and before Abacha's death, he was already made. Obasanjo granted him monopoly in cement importation when he banned Ibeto group from importing cement. All in all, he was made by the government through dubious means at the expense of the masses. 1 Like |

Properties / Re: How Is Your Landlord Treating You by Engineer96(m): 9:43am On Jun 02, 2012 |
My landlord is the best of all the landlords. I was already in the house when he bought it but I was staying in one of the BQs, though that was meant to temporary. There were three duplexes in the compound. There was no water then. He demolished two of the three duplexes leaving one for me.. He dug a borehole for me. He has never collected house rent from me since september 2010 till date. He stays in Lagos while I stay in Onitsha. He is from Anambra state while I am from Enugu state. He calls once in a while to ask if I am spending too much in electricicty bill because of water pump. Is there any landlord that is like mine let alone being better? |

Education / Jonathan Inaugurates Committee On Best Brain by Engineer96(m): 7:03pm On May 24, 2012 |
Jonathan inaugurates committee on scholarship for best brains President Goodluck Jonathan has inaugurated a committee to scout the nation’s tertiary institutions for the best 100 first-class students that will be given scholarships to further study abroad. Inaugurating the Special Committee on Scholarship for Best Brains in Abuja, on Thursday, the president instructed the ten-man committee to completely eschew the quota system in the selection process and go for the best brains. The committee is expected to select the best 100 first-class students in some specialized courses such as the sciences, engineering and economics from universities in the country and expose them to the best facilities in the world. In a bid to encourage and enhance knowledge transfer, beneficiaries of the scholarship after their graduation, are expected to lecture for the first five years, in the nation’s institutions, after which they can go on to be on their own. The President, who is a doctorate degree holder, condemned the dearth of academics in the nation’s tertiary institutions, where only 60 percent of lecturers are doctorate degree holders. President Jonathan noted that such a situation must change if Nigeria is be transformed. He charged the committee headed by the executive secretary of the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, to shun quota system and work only on merit in the selection of the brains for the scholarship programme. According to the President, for Nigeria to maintain its status as a leading African country, and for the transformation agenda of the government to succeed, the government must pay more attention to the development of human capacity. To this end, he pledged a total commitment to changing the educational system, across all levels from primary to tertiary. |
TV/Movies / Dstv And Their New Showings by Engineer96(m): 12:26pm On May 13, 2012 |
For some days now, DSTV has been showing about three (3) movies everyday. Cross and Tinapa, Maza and some ther movies everyday on both channels 114 and 115. Channel 145 is now for DSTV compact and that means we have to pay #4800 every month to watch different and new movies instead of the former #2800. In other words, you pay same as before and enjoy less programming. This too bad. They know that most Nigerians pay #2800 to enjoy their programming and so to compel Nigerians to pay more so as to enjoy what the have been having before, they removed the usual movies we watch on 114. It is now boring to whatch same movies everyday unless you want to watch music channels like Channel O and others. And watch this, very soon, they will remove those channels so that we pay #6800 to watch any channel. This is dis service and complete absurd. This south Africans are taking us for granted. This was done without taking customers' reactions into consideration and since it was done on April 21st, nobody has complained against it. Nigerians, let's rise up against this injustice and enslaveement in our own country. |

Business / Akintola Williams And Co To Be Prosecuted by Engineer96(m): 6:52am On Apr 26, 2012 |
The House of Representatives yesterday ended debate of its Ad-hoc Committee on fuel subsidy report, ordering the prosecution of Akintola Williams Deloitte and Olusola Adekanye audit firms. The two companies were indicted for their alleged complicity in the auditing of fuel subsidy regime. The House formally adopted the panel’s recommendations which include refund of over N1trillion and sanctions for indicted companies and individuals. The committee led by Hon. Farouk Lawan submitted its report last Wednesday. Kicking off debate on the report which started on Tuesday, the House asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute the formost accounting firms for their alleged professional negligence. The two companies sacked last week by the Federal Government were in charge of inspection of vessels of imported petroleum products which subsidy was paid on. Reprieve, however, came the way of former Accountant-General of the Federation and incumbent Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, as the lawmakers exonerated his office of blame in the controversial payment of N999million 128 times within 24 hours in 2009. They urged the EFCC to investigate the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency(PPPRA)over the payments. The commencement of yesterday’s debate was preceded by a drama. Hon Robertson Uwak (Oron PDP) had soon after the Deputy Speaker, Hon Emeka Ihedioha who presided over the session announced the business of the day, said that his constituents had been bombarding him with calls demanding that the Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Deziani Alison-Madueke should resign. The comment attracted mixed reactions from the lawmakers. Deputy Leader Leo Ogor tried to calm the situation by saying that Uwak did not follow due process in the calls for the minister’s resignation. He had barely finished making his observation when shouts from the lawmakers rent the air. The Deputy Speaker moved to restore order in the House, but there were shouts of no, no. Uwak later told newsmen that there was no justification for not recommending the resignation of the minister after the revelations that showed the stench in her ministry. Back to the main issue .Hon Betty Apiafi said that it was not enough to just relieve the accounting firms of their services as was done by the government. She insisted that they should be prosecuted. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila supported that the recommendation for the blacklisting of the two firms in handling assignments for the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.Hons Emmanuel Jime and Fort Dike also backed the call. On the payment of N999million, the legislators urged the EFCC to carry out further investigation of PPPRA and other agencies involved. On the extra-budgetary expenditure by the Executive, the lawmakers voted for the enactment of an Act criminalising such expenditure. They argued that it violates the law of the land. Speaking on the report, Chairman of the committee, Hon. Lawan, restated that the panel was fair to all the parties involved. He said that those indicted in the report would take up the gauntlet against it and members of the House. He appealed to Nigerians to fight for the protection of truth and sanity. On claims that Mrs. Alison-Madueke was being shielded by the House, Committee Chairman on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Zakari Mohammed, dismissed it as untrue. He said the recommendation that the management of NNPC should be overhauled had addressed the issue. According to him the minister is the chairman of the board of NNPC and therefore, it was wrong to insinuate that she was exenorated. He said the objective of the report was not to witch-hunt anybody, but to state facts as they are. He denied that the House is playing anybody’s script |
Politics / Ahmadu Ali, You Are On Your Own-pdp by Engineer96(m): 6:18am On Apr 26, 2012 |
AS the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee that investigated the implementation of subsidy regime in Nigeria indicts former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, the National Leadership of the Party yesterday threw its weight behind the House. Rising from its National Working Committee, NWC yesterday, the Alhaji Bamanga Tukur-led NWC vowed that the party will continue to encourage the National Assembly in its move to take necessary measures that will help stamp out corruption. “In this vein, the National Working Committee identifies with the various probes by the National Assembly in exercise of its legislative oversight functions,” the party said. In a statement signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh at the end of the meeting, the party said, “the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) met today,(yesterday). The meeting reviewed crucial national issues and resolved thus: “That in line with the resolve of the Dr. Bamanga Turkur-led National Working Committee that the new leadership of our great Party, PDP shall be in the fore front of the battle against corruption and in view of the principled stand and deep commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan on the matter, the National Working Committee (NWC) hereby restates unflinching support for every step so far taken by government to stamp out corruption. “Specifically, the National Working Committee welcomes the probe by the House of Representatives into the management of the petroleum subsidy. While the NWC awaits the consummation of all due processes in line with fair hearing to ensure that only the guilty suffers, the PDP will continue to encourage the National Assembly to take necessary measures that will help stamp out corruption.” |
Jobs/Vacancies / Nigerian Police And Bribe Taking by Engineer96(m): 8:36pm On Apr 24, 2012 |
I went to relief market, Onitsha, to buy sourvenir for my wedding. After the purchases, I loadede it in an open roof tricycle. I sat beside the rider. We passed through Upper Iweka, Oguta road and on getting to Central Police Station CPS, Onitsha, we were stopped by some policemen who demanded for the invoice which I gave them. They requested for the driver's licence which the driver gave to them. When they saw that there was no way to get money, which they wanted, from us, they said it was an offence for me to have joined the tricycle. That I should have hired a taxi to convey me home while the open-roofed tricycle carries the goods that I bought. I quarrelled with them and I called an officer there who told them to let me go. Two days later, after my wedding, I went to the same CPS, Onitsha to see a family friend around 7.30pm. Lo and behold, a man who has been made naked, in search of money in his pocket, by the police and after being beaten. His offence was that they demanded for some money which the okada rider could not provide. He told them that he has been at the mechanic since morning and he just came out to get money for his children's dinner. My wife started shedding tears after witnessing the whole incident. One of the policemen told the man before me that if he(the okada rider) touches his motorcycle again, he(the policeman) will kill him and nothing would happen. When will the bribe taking by Nigerian police stop? Are nigerian police not paid? Are to protecting us or exploiting us? Are not aware of what their duties and responsibilities are? |
Education / Neco Boss' Integrity Is Questionable by Engineer96(m): 6:03am On Apr 13, 2012 |
The National Union of Non Academic Staff of Universities and Allied Institution (NASU), National Examinations Council (NECO) chapter on Thursday threatened to forcefully eject the Registrar of the council, Promise Okpala from his office next Monday if the ministry of education does not announce his re- appointment. In a statement made available to Channel Television in Minna, Niger state, the Chairman of the union in the Council, Lawal Rabana said since the expiration of the tenure of the Registrar on April 9, there had not been any official pronouncement from the ministry of education, a situation that is creating tension in the institution. The statement added that since no pronouncement had been made regarding his re-appointment and the fact that the registrar had not added any value to the council in the last five years, he should please stay out of office because he had loss the confidence of the workers. “Professor Promise Okpala has not added any value to NECO and Nigerian children need someone without credibility question to shape their future, we urge the honourable minister of education to get more involved in NECO’s affairs in order to re-channel it towards the aspirations of its founding fathers’’ the statement concluded. There has been a lingering dispute between the staff at NECO and the Registrar over the rights of the workers to join a trade union. Mr Okpala has rejected the unionisation move of the NECO staff. The disagreement had lingered since 2005 in the matter of trade dispute Number IAP/HB/3744 between Non- Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU) and three other examination bodies – Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), National Examinations Council (NECO) and National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB). The dispute was referred to the Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP) by Hassan Muhammed Lawal the then Minister of Labour and Productivity on 15 August, 2005. In the ruling signed by three arbitrators – Rufus O. Orugho, Aureol D. Vianana and Lawal Yusuf – the panel said: “One of the main purposes of a trade union is to defend the rights of its members wherever it appears to it that the rights of such members are being transgressed upon.” It then declared, “The tribunal, having carefully considered all the evidences before it and the applicable laws and having regard to the principles of equity, make the following awards: An order compelling NECO, JAMB and NABTEB to allow NASU unfettered right to unionize the workers of their establishments throughout the federation and an order of perpetual injunction restraining NECO, JAMB and NABTEB from intimidating, threatening or victimizing any of their workers in any manner whatsoever on the grounds that such workers(s) decide to participate or actually participated in trade union activities with NASU”. While JAMB has actually unionized its staff, NECO is not only adamant but also said to be intimidating its staff on the matter. Within the past three months when the case was reopened by the NECO staff, 24 members of staff, seen to be championing unionization in the body, have been transferred. |

Besides, are u even a taxpayer? If not then don't borrow the term so losely. Search yourself, you'll find u are not really providing any noteworthy service to anyone. Incase you wish to know. I serve the public and my tax is deducted at the source. This is a fact. I give people the best service that I can. As for arresting of Okada men, it shows joblessness of the men in uniform. I still maintain that the arrest was indiscrinate. It was made around 2pm. No question was asked before the arrest was made. I sincerely believe that the intention of the arrest was to extort money from them since they no longer get #20 on the roads. As for the soldier working day and night, I am aware that they change them every six hours for those on day and twelve hours for those on night duty. He could not have worked throughtout the night and was still left to work during the day. Let's not be sentimental but let's be object in our comments. |
Nairaland / General / Nigerian Police And Nigerian Army Are Becoming Useless by Engineer96(m): 4:22pm On Mar 24, 2012 |
Hello NLs, I think that The Nigerian Police and Nigerian army are becoming increasingly useless. I was on my way to Enugu and on getting to Awka, I saw a soldier on uniform sleeping, just after Aroma junction. Though, there was a sign of military check point there but they were somewhere sleeping. On getting to Enugu, just in front of Holy Ghost Catheral, I saw a team of soldiers and police arresting okada riders indiscriminately. And so I started to wonder, what are these people really paid for? To sleep on duty? To arrest okada men, who are legitimately looking for their daily bread? Again, in the north, where they are needed, they have failed woefully. They are attacked and killed, even in their stations. Do these people still worth their pay with taxpayers' money including mine? What are they doing in the south and what have they achieved in the north? Your contributions. |

The allegation levelled against the DG were false. I listened to her submissions today. She was not given a fair hearing. Going by the contents of her letter of appointment which she submitted today, she did not collect all that was meant for her. Rather, she collected what she actually spent. The DG shocked me and indeed all listening Nigerians when she made us understand that the documents being paraded by the house members were falsified just to rubish her but I thank God for her courage. The said chairman collected money for a trip in 2009 and did not eventually travel and he pocketed the money. Uneducated, unelected self serving fools calling themselves 'honorables'. |

Health / Blunder At ESUT Teaching Hospital: What's Your Advice? by Engineer96(m): 8:36pm On Oct 18, 2011 |
My wife was ill and so she went to ESUT teaching hospital at Parlane, Enugu to see a doctor. The doctor referred her to the hospital's lab where she paid and obtained a receipt and blood was taken for the said test. Two days later, she went to the lab for the result. Lo and behold, it could not be found at the laboratory department of the hospital. After searching for the result without seeing it, she was told to go to the bank, make another payment and have the test repeated but I have lost confidence in the result. How reliable will the result be? Should the new result be reliable at all? Can the doctor draw a reliable inference from the result and arrive at a valid conclusion? Do I sue the hospital for negligence? Should I allow my wife to pay again for their error? Shouldn't parklane be sanctioned for this silly mistake that borders on human life?? Your kind advise will be appreciated. Thank you. |
