Good going, mate!

Can kind of work out your age bracket though!

Do you also remember Sylva Oforgu, Lekan Ogunbanwo (Radio Lagos), Ola Nathan-Marsh (NTA2 channel 5)?

@ Dre_lu

First of all check the F-connectors at each end of the cable and that they are properly done and that the braided wires are not touching the single copper that goes into each connector; check also that the F-connectors to both the LNB and the receiver are correctly connected. If problem persists, then perhaps replace LNB.

LIDER will not be fta for the match; they will cut the signal and there will be no picture on the satellite version of the channel till after the match.

Again re Nilesat

Yep, AB4A has replaced AB4. The sad news is that the footprint of AB4A seems to be less generous than the erstwhile AB4 --- especially for people like us (UK certainly and maybe Nigeria/West Africa as well) in fringe reception areas.

@ all Re Nilesat

A new satellite has deployed at the 7w orbital position; in the UK it means even poorer (in fact no) signal on some frequencies that had been difficult in the first place; I don't know its effect on what is receivable in West Africa; time will tell.

Heartfelt condolences; may his soul and that of others departed (I also lost an aged uncle while in Nigeria recently) rest in peace. Just trust that he has gone to a better place and left this troubled world. Almighty God will grant you and all his loved ones the fortitude to deal with this loss and positively too.

A lot of this insanity started in the US and is spreading round the world, unfortunately!  (I have to say though that the Nigerian fraudsters in the pulpits are devising their own new gimmicks!)  sad

In fact a lot of things/practices that you see in modern churches, especially the 'funky' ones, stem from deceptive but glamorous and nice sounding (flesh pleasing tactics) of many con men who claim to be pastors, apostles, bishops etc. Worse, because these practices are so prevalent many Christians who do not know the bible well do not even realise that these practices are unbiblical and contrary to the teachings of Christ and the apostles.

If you have a previous patch that worked well (or use original Strong firmware) for your particular receiver, then try doing a "forced" download using a null modem cable RS 232.

What you do: switch off the receiver, connect receiver to computer by the cable; still leave the receiver switched off, start the loader programme and send the correct software to your receiver, when it asks (or after sending software), then switch on your receiver. With a bit of luck it should accept the software.

@ all

A part of me thinks that what is happening is that wrong software/patches are being loaded; it is important to ensure that the software/patch that you want to load is correct for the particular model of receiver.

Daarsat is definitely on intelsat 907 KU. I've seen their setup. I first saw their gear (not yet installed) at NBC (Nigeria Broadcasting Commision) and again as installed in a private residence. Their dishes are 90cm and positioned exactly as was done for TrendTV before they switched to Eutelsat W4. Like someone earlier noted, their signals are HD (High Definition), so you will need an HD STB to detect the signals. Don Pedro Obaseki, the channel manager for Daar Movistar told me their smartcard won't work on any other decoder but theirs. I don't know how true that may be but it appears they might be FTA for a while, (if you have a HD receiver try and see if you can enjoy it now), because patronage is not very high and Daarsat are tryng to do all in their power to find a sales/marketing magic to turn things around. Personally, I would've expected them to go on SD (Standard Definition) and later, gradually cut over fully to HD. In short, they no do their home-work well.
I am flabbergasted by this too!!! Generally providers, even here in Europe, do not come out with an exclusively HD package; usually, they will have one or two HD channels in a package that may be up to 20 channels or more. In even Europe, most people do not as yet have an HD TV or HD receiver for that matter, let alone Nigeria. I think those who advised Daarsat's decision  (and those who approved it) to go exclusively HD, in Nigeria in 2009, have a lot to answer for. This is a recipe for Daarsat to go the way of GTV; the only difference, perhaps, is that Daarsat has probabbly not spent so much on programme content yet unlike GTV who shelled out for football. If Daarsat continues along current lines they will for long remain an irrelevance for most Nigerians.

Instead of further editing the above post, I have gone back to source the coordinates for Port Harcourt as below:

Latitude = 4.7915, Longitude = 6.9991
Lat = 4 degrees, 47.5 minutes North
Long = 6 degrees, 59.9 minutes East

Thus lat/long should be entered in the receiver as Lat 4.8 and Long 7.0E while the motor latitude scale should be set to 4.8.

In fact W3A 7e is actually due south of Port Harcourt effectively and ideally should be the satellite to align to initially; but, as I said before, if 5e is easier to track that can be used too.
Pitodenz, using DishPointer.com click on "Motorized Systems" and choose Moteck SG2100 H-H motor as an example, and type your location, Port Harcourt.  It will give you the following: Your Latitude: is 4.7915° and Longitude: is 6.9991°. Your Motor Latitude: is 4.8° (this is your latitude rounded) and Your Dish Elevation:  29° (This is the elevation that you will set on your dish. (Note this is different from the motor elevation which your current latitude of 4.8°) The LNB skew should be zero, this is because the motor controls the skewing as the dish moves acoss the arc. I have attached a link to Tutorials on how to insall various H-H motors. Don't forget to factor in your Azimuth. Remember, your true south is your longitude (6.9991°), and your True south Satellite in this case is Eutelsat @ 7.0°E. On dishpointer.com pay particular attention to "Dish Setup Data" section, all the figures that you need are located there. I hope this helps. smiley

How to install H-H Motors and Your True South Calculations using DISHPOINTER.com
To add to the above post

1. You can also find latitude and longitude for your location at this link: http://www.satsig.net/maps/lat-long-finder.htm

2. Note Latitude/longitude are usually given in two formats (a) degrees and minutes and (b) decimal format; for diseqc motor settings, use the decimal format; in other words enter latitude and longitude in the receiver in decimal format and when setting latitude on the motor also use the decimal format. For example satsig gives the following figures for (near) Port harcourt (I was not very accurate with the map): (edited)

Latitude = 4.4779, Longitude = 6.5918
Lat    = 4 degrees,   28.7 minutes   North
Long = 6 degrees,   35.5 minutes   East

The figures to use are those in the first line: rounding them up, you will enter lat 4.5 and long 6.6 in the receiver and you will set the motor latitude scale to 4.5.

3. Note When setting up a diseqc motor, the pole must be totally straight/vertical; you can use a spirit level or other tool to check that it is perfectly straight.

4. Because the longitude of Port Harcourt is 6.6, the two nearest satellites to due south in Nigeria are either Sirius 5e or W3 7e; one of these should be the satellite to track first.

5. Before tracking it, first enter lat/long in the receiver; second, set the receiver motor setting to USALS; third tell the receiver to go to either 5e or 7e (depending on which you think has higher signal); fourth, then go outside and try to track the satellite.

Further Notes

6. Once you have set the latitude scale on the motor correctly, do not touch it again.

7. When trying to find the satellite, you have to rotate both the dish and the motor to find the azimuth; for the dish elevation (somewhat confusingly called declination, actually), you make adjustments only on the dish.

Hope this helps.

GlobeCast launches new African DTH platform on Astra 4A

3rd March 2009

GlobeCast has today announced that its African DTH platform has successfully started transmissions on SES ASTRA’s Astra 4A (Sirius 4) satellite. African broadcaster VoxAfrica is one of the first channels to sign up for the new platform which provides sub-Saharan Africa’s widest and most powerful coverage.

VoxAfrica called on GlobeCast to provide capacity and distribution its programming to Africa. The new platform on Astra 4A, located at 5° East is the first Ku-band DTH platform with coverage over sub-Saharan Africa, providing broadcasters with the opportunity to reach households across the continent.

GlobeCast has contracted one transponder on the satellite that facilitates uplink from Europe and is compliant to distribute services to IPTV or terrestrial network headends. The new platform, which is an alternative to the pay TV bouquets in sub-Saharan Africa, responds to a strong demand for free-to-air Ku-band coverage of this crucial region. Several African broadcasters are already in contact with GlobeCast to secure positions in this coveted space to secure positions in this coveted space and extend their audience to 56 African countries.

If you look in the picture in the link that I posted earlier, you will see that the dish goes on the diseqc motor; looking at the size of that motor you can see why it can never carry a 2.4m dish; even a 1.2 dish is pushing it to be honest (though it is claimed that one particular motor can do 1.4m). So, it is not merely a question of electrical power but also one of ability to support the weight of the dish.
if any of us in the house hav done the USUAL stuff plz i need pictures of it. ie 4rm where
it is connected behind the decoder to the point of the external positioner.
I have explained how the USALS motor works a number of times before. Use the search tool at the bottom of the thread; you can enter for example "enigma diseqc motor". In the meantime here is a link to a picture I once posted: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-7715.832.html#msg2176624

To simplify/add to what maddoxj said: the diseqc/USALS motor is more readily usable with a dish up to 1.2m using specifically a receiver that is USALS capable (most modern receivers are). When motorising bigger dishes, the motor is not a USALS motor but a jack/actuator combined with a positioner. The jack/actuator does not ordinarily work with USALS which is why you have to locate each satellite manually.

With regard to the usefulness of the diseqc/USALS motor in Nigeria, I personally think that they can be useful for some people with 90cm dishes in that you can use just the one dish for the satellites that can be received on 90cm e.g. the one motorised 90cm dish will get 27w, 5e, 7e, 36e, 68e etc. In particular if Daarsat starts operating and if they are on 27w as is rumoured, people will have to consider whether they really would like three dishes to get Daarsat, HiTV/DSTV and MyTV or one motorised dish.

PS the diseqc/USALS motor has become very cheap now and can be bought here in the UK for the equivalent of 10,000 naira.
